Oracle 9i unstable on Windows 2003 EE with OUT /3gb switch

I am currently running 9.2.0.6 in OLTP confiig with replication using streams on Windows 2003 Standard. We needed more memory for the database, so we purchased a Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition license to break the 3gb limit. I was already using the /3gb switch. We built a new box with 32gb of ram and just put in the /pae switch as I didn't think the /3gb was needed. Our SGA was only 500mg. The docs actually said the /3gb switch would limit us the 16gb. Well, upon migrating the database, I get all these 4030 errors and "skgpspawn failed:category = 27143, depinfo = 9261, op = spdcr, loc = skgpspawn" errors, 12500, 12560s ... like nothing I have ever seen before and the db would crash. We also got errors in Windows Event Viewer: "Unable to begin another thread". I had NOT even given the DB more memory, this was using the original settings. Anyway, we reverted back to old server, thinking we had bad RAM. We tested box new box and it looks fine, so swapped out RAM. We tried again, but same thing happened, errors left and right and the database crashed. So we rebuilt the new EE box like the old Standard with /3gb switch in addition to the /pae and it stabilized.
Can't find much on metalink. Why would I need the /3gb switch? One of my systems guys says the /3gb changes some of the behaviors of Windows and it affects threads.
NOTE: We only pay for oracle upgrades, we don't have support so I can't open a TAR. It's a money issue. This is the first place I have worked that I couldn't open a TAR. It's a bummer.

Not sure if I got this correctly but...
with standard edition of Windows 2003 and with /3GB switch in place, you made the kernel use 1GB of the 32 bit address space.
With Enterprise edition of Windows 2003 and without /3GB switch in place, kernel will use 2GB which is default.
Thus if you have configured the new server without /3GB and your SGA is > 2GB then you will face these issues.
Again, one cannot combine the /PAE and /3GB switches as it would restrict the addressable memory to 16GB only.
Or do I need more coffee?
My choice for > 4GB is always 64 bit system with 64 bit OS and Oracle binaries.
Just my two cents...

  • After installing Crystal Reports XI on Windows 2003 server with one error..

After installing Crystal Reports XI on Windows 2003 server with one error... REGSVR sapldap.dll error.  I had to regsvr it manually.  Crystal still didn't run.  Found out that Crystal Reports XI will not run until you change DEP to protect only windows program and services.  Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your finding. Very much appreciated.
The DEP is a known issue and it is documented in [this|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_erq/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes.do] note.
Crystal Reports XI was not compiled with the nx flag as it released before Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows 2003 Service Pack 1.
As for the sapldap.dll. I'm not sure where this is coming from. I do not see this dll on my install, however it does come with the SAP portal integration kit. So I'm not sure if that is flying around somewhere on that server(?)

  • Is there any way how i can download and run Window based games, with out installing Windows-thus Bootcamp? and if so, is it free?

is there any way how i can download and run Window based games, with out installing Windows-thus Bootcamp? and if so, is it free?

No, you must install Windows to run Windows software. You do not need to use Boot Camp (yes, it's free because it comes with OS X.)
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Oracle 9i Installation on Windows 2003 Server 64bit - URGENT

    Hi ,
I am installing oracle 9i on win 2003 server (64 bit) enterprise edition. After the installation whenever I try to run Database Configuration Assistant or Net configuration assistant nothing happens.
If i run DBCA on command line then it runs but not from the Start menu. Can anyone suggest the solution ? I tested it with oracle 9i (32 bit) and (64bit) versoins for win2003 server platform. But same results. Also tried the oracle 32 bit for XP on windows 2003 server but in vain.
It seems like there is PATH problem but i checked all the paths and they seem preety okay. I wonder why it runs from the command line when I recall dbca.bat file and not from the Oracle menu.
I would appreciate any remedy to this problem

I hate to be a wet blanket, but this forum is for feedback about the OTN site. The best place for your current thread is in the Database Installation:

  • Problem in installing Oracle 9i R2 on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise

We are having problem installing the Oracle 9i R2 Server on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition. During installation, it generates error saying "The IP Address of the machine not found". When clicking the "Continue" button, it tries to install other things but few minutes later it asks to stop complete installation or installation of that feature.
But when we installed it on Windows XP it works fine and we have no problem in configuring it. What's the problem with Windows 2003 Server?
If we drop the idea of installing it on Windows 2003 Server, can we make Windows XP maching as a Server?

ORACLE asumes that the first network device you have on your server has a fixed IP address.
    Is this the case?
If not so you should install a loopback adapter as network device with a fixed IP.
    Does this help?

  • Oracle 10g problems on Windows 2003 32bit

After much struggle I got 10g installed on my w2k3 server.
    It is very unreliable, however.
    1. The OracleDBConsoles<server name> will fail from time to time.
    2. my floppy disk drive is being accessed from time to time for no reason after the install (no, no virus - it stops when I stop all oracle services)
Is 10g really windows 2003 ready?
I mean, from the painful install, to it not behaving properly...
I used to have 9i r2 working flowlessly on the same machine. I may just go back to it.
I did a proper uninstall with a registry cleanup before trying to install 10g.
Anyone using 10g on w2k3 willing to share some insights?
    Thanks!

I know for sure that this will not be released until Feb 2005 as I cannot get a backport for a different bug and have been informed from Oracle Support.

  • Requeriments OS for installation Oracle 11g RAC  in Windows 2003

I plan to install Oracle 11g Standard with RAC in Windows 2003 Server.
I will use 2 nodes with the same OS.
I will use a SAN with fibre channel, to store the DB.
It is possible to install Oracle RAC in W2003 Standard ?
    I need obligatory W2003 Enterprise?
The cluster of the 2 nodes is made by OS or by Oracle Clusterware?
    Thanks in advance.

You can install on Windows 2003 Standard, it works with this OS. On the other hand the cluster is configured by the oracle clusterware. You need to make absolutely sure you are able to write from both nodes to the shared storage. Specific details on the regedit parameters you have to configure and specific OS issues are detailed at the above reference Werner posted.

  • Oracle 10g install on Windows 2003 Server 32-bit

As far as I can tell there doesn't appear to be an Oracle10g download for 10.2.0.4 for Windows 2003 Server. It looks like you have to download 10.2.0.1 for Windows then apply the patch to bring it up to 10.2.0.4. Am I seeing this correctly or am I missing something?

Indeed you are; your eyes are definitely not lying to you. 10.2.0.4 is a patchset which can only be applied to an already existing Oracle Home.
You might want to try and understand a little bit more about what the 10.2.0.4 means by accessing the links below.
