ORACLE 9I  VS   SQLSERVER 2003

ORACLE 9I VS SQLSERVER 2000 WHO IS THE BEST DATABASE????????

lol. I always love hearing people bash Microsoft. I
happen to agree in most cases. However, Sql Server IS
a great product. It is very robust for developers,
easy to use, and packed with functionality. But atleast I bash on substantiated grounds ;-)
No, I'm not saying that MsSQL is a bad tool for developers, but then you got to ask yourself what are you working for; your own development relief or your customers.
I would not dare to advice a MsSQL server to a large client with high volume data in the database and requirements for stability, uptime, etc.
For smaller corporations, what ever, they may choose what ever they want (even MsSQL on a Windows 2000 platform ;-).
The question is not what you want, it's what the client needs.
It's more about productivity than it is looking cool.Productivity for the developers, not for the clients I guess?
I am a software developer working for a software firm
that employs over 2000 very talented programmers and
even though our software does run and is
tested/supported on most major RDBMS's, Sql Server is
our development platform for the very reasons I
mentioned above. It really is the best for
developers. Hands down. If anyone would like to
offer any concrete reasons why it is not, I'm open to
hearing them.I think "the best for developers" is different for everyone, I for example like to code using VI, use command line tools for versioning, dbases, etc. but that's just personal. But like you said, you use MsSQL internally but deliver on "all" RDBMS's to your clients, that does have a reason... ;-)
In short, there is a lot more to Sql Server than just
a fancy GUI which is why it is very quickly gaining
market share. Can't say why MsSQL is gaining market share, global disintegration of the human mind? :-P
But as I said earlier, if you are looking for a
production DB then Oracle is the way to go.I couldn't agree more, that's what my previous post is about (thinking from a commercial / client perspective).

  • Oracle 10g on Windows 2003: instance not autostarting

I'm installing Oracle 10g (10.2.0.1) on two new Windows 2003 servers, and I'm facing the same problem, even after some full re-installations, on both of them; so this issue seems to be some kind of bug related to Oracle 10g on Windows 2003 and not just some random error.
When I run the installation it completes fine, and the database instance gets created and started without any trouble; I can connect to it using the console, the Java stand-alone Enterprise Manager, SQL Plus or anything else; it works when connecting from clients, too.
As soon as the server is rebooted, Oracle services start but it just seems the instance isn't actually started: any connection is refused by the listener which complains about not knowing the supplied instance name, and the oracle.exe process only uses about 11 MB of memory, which is a sure sign it isn't doing anything useful. The instance is configured to start, the registry keys are properly set, and everything works correclty after the installation... but stops working after the first server reboot.
I tried manually stopping and starting the services, in various orders; I tried re-installing Oracle various times; I tried deleting and re-creating the database instance, both at setup time or manually after the setup was done without creating an instance, I tried anything I could think of.
The only thing I didn't try was applying patch set 10.2.0.3 to the installation, but I just can't seem to find them, even though my company has an Oracle partnership; I find Metalink just a bit too confusing.
    Can someone please help?
    P.S.
The servers are actually VMWare ESX virtual servers, but I just can't imagine this to be the cause of the problem. The operating system on both servers is Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (not R2), italian language, with service pack 2 and all the latest updates from Windows Update. The servers are not domain members and I'm running the installation using the local Administrator account.

I don't have a physical server available now, but I really can't even imagine how the underlying hardware, be it physical or virtual, could affect this behaviour. I'm talking about the Oracle service starting while the instance isn't, this is very unlikely to have any relationship with device drivers.

  • Install 16 bit Oracle client on Win 2003 server

    Hello,
Is it possible to install Oracle SQL* Net 2.3(16 bit) Client on Windows 2003 server. If it is then could someone give me links from where I could get more information on this (like the steps to install 16 bit Oracle client on Win 2003).
    Thanks.

the 16-bit applications are not supported by Windows 2003 server x64 edition.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=896458&SD=tech
I have never tried to use 16-bit SQLNet client on Windows 2003 x86. I'm pretty sure that this combination will not be supported by Oracle , athough it could work.
As far as I remember the 2.3 client was shipped with the Oracle 7.3.
here is the desupport notice for Oracle 7

  • Oracle 10g on Windows 2003:  Can't start with any account but Local System

Fresh install of Oracle 10g on Windows 2003. I install as a member of the local admin group and everything works great. The various services are starting as Local System, though, and I'd prefer to set them up to start as a specific domain user account.
When I make that change, however, I can't get any of the Oracle related services to start. I've added this domain user to the local ora_dba group on my server, given it the ability to log on as a batch job and log on as a service in the local security policy. Doesn't seem to help.
I saw a thread that implied using a domain user account wasn't supported (didn't seem right to me, but what the hell), so I created a local user account and tried that. Same result.
    Something I'm missing?
    Thanks.

What is missing, I suspect, is reading the installation docs.
    http://docs.oracle.com
If that doesn't work then come back and ask specific requestions referencing the appropriate document and naming the actual version you are trying to install (ps 10g is a marketing name not a version number).

  • Oracle 8 in windows 2003

    Hai All,
Oracle 8 support windows 2003 ? any patches needed?
    please help..
    Shiju

Oracle 8 hit the market when Windows 2003 didn't event exist.
Consequently Oracle 8 is not certified on Windows 2003 (so is not guaranteed to work) and as it is both not certified and desupported Oracle won't help you out.
Consequently you are on your own, when you continue your road to hell.

Windows 2003 is not listed as supported platform:

I would not try to install a desupported database version on an unsupported platform.

  • Install Oracle VM on WIndows 2003 Sevser/XP/Vista

Has any one successfully installed Oracle VM on WIndows 2003 Server or XP or Vista?
Is it possible to migrate an exisitng Oracle Express Edition database to Oracle VM? Or the Oracle Express Edition has to be installed on Oracle VM on one platform before it is portable to another machine/server.
Is there any viewlet on how to use Oracle VM?

To answer your first question: Oracle VM Server can NOT be installed on Windows.
    From the OVM-FAQ:
Does Oracle VM require a host operating system?
No. Oracle VM installs directly on server hardware and does not require a host operating system.
This applies to the VM Server. For the VM Manager:
The Oracle VM Manager works on the operating system Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 Update 5 or later.
FYI - these servers are all Linux-based.
You might check the documentation in the "Virtualization Technology Center": http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/virtualization/index.html to find some more answers.

  • Cant install oracle 8i in windows 2003 server

    hi,
I am a newbie in Oracle. While Im trying to install Oracle 8i in Windows 2003 server , setup is not running. It didn't show anything. When trying to run from auto run, after splash screen nothing came.I formatted hard disk, changed two more hard disks,.changed machine...but cant install it in no way... It is the same case in Windows XP home edition.
But it is running in one of my friend's machine(windows 2003 server)
Please help me with valuable solutions.
    Thanks in advance

Did your friend install on W2003 or upgrade from an older version of the OS?
When trying to run programs on an OS that is not certified for the programs, it is hit-n-miss whether the OS actually has the support files needed for the programs.
Think about this: the Oracle environment needs OS support in the form of DLLs and other files. The contents of the DLLs are made visible as APIs. Each time Microsoft releases patches, it is possible that the APIs that Oracle used are changed. This is extremely true when a new version of the OS is released, and even more true with stripped versions such as XP Home.
If your friend installed and then applied patches, [s]he may have hit the proper API combination. If you appled patches first, you may have skootched your APIs to the point that Oracle can not longer install.
Even if you happen to get it installed, you run the risk of getting clobbered any time you install a new Microsoft patch. The risk is minimized when you use a certified combination of the OS and application.

You can use any of the samples in the official Oracle docs:

There is simply nothing special that has to be done for the different OS.

  • Oracle 10g On Windows 2003

    Hello All,
I have limited knowledge/experience with ORACLE and like your comments/feedback on following:
We plan to install Oracle 10g on Windows 2003.
    Question:
    1) Oracle 10G Standard Edition limitation on Memory/CPU
    2) To setup a Stand-by database server do we need Oracle Enterprise Edition?
    3) We plan to have 8.0 GB memory on Windows 2003 server, is the Oracle SE capable of using up to 8.0 GB of memory
    4) Last but not least any idea/suggestion on best practices for Oracle 10g on Windows 2003
I know some of the questions are not clear but hope to get some answers.
    Much Appreciated!
    Kamal Hassan

    3) We plan to have 8.0 GB memory on Windows 2003
server, is the Oracle SE capable of using up to 8.0 GB of memoryTo start with, does your combination of hardware and operating system provide the ability for Oracle to use the amount of memory? (you need to know what hardware architecture and edition of Windows)
About the Std Edition being capable or no, in matter of license terms... I believe there is no direct memory limitation. However the license constrains the server hardware maximum capacity (number of "processors"), which perhaps could limit the size of RAM indirectly.
I forgot to mention, that, depending on your choice of platform/os and of course your apps, you may need to consider whether to run 32 or 64-bit Oracle.
Is the plan to run one big or many small (memory-wise) Oracle instances?

  • Oracle 8i on Windows 2003

    Hi Guru,
WE have to do some POC on Oracle 8i, can you please me know whether Oracle 8i can install on Windows 2003 server.
    Thanks,
    Tippu

As I remember no 8i version was ever certified on Win Server 2003. Oracle8i is also no longer supported.
So there will be no POC, since the concept is broken to begin with. Fail!
