Oracle 9iR2 db and Hardware movement

Friends
We are moving our servers (OS AIX 5.3) and installed softwares from harware IBM p670 to 570. We will move Oracle installations also. We plan to move disk images (no new Oracle server installation) and network controls.
Is there any things that is required to be done by a DBA on Oracle database server side other than relinking it. I hope I will just need to do just relinking of the exectables.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Vishal

Yes, first you can try a relink. If that doesn't work well, you can always do a reinstall and patch up to the same level.
If the location of all files (control files, datafiles and logfiles etc) are not changed, then it should be alright.
Make sure user and group information is correct and ownership (permission) of the files are right.
If the network IP address changes, you may need to change your listener.ora and tnsnames.ora to reflect the change.

  • What is the best set up (hardware and/or software) to store and access movies and music purchased through apple tv without using the computers storage space

I have run out of space on my imac desktop, which only has 500GB of storage, due to the movies, music, etc. that have been purchased through iTunes and Apple TV.  I do not want to delete the purchases but need to free up space on my computer.  I am looking for the best scenario for moving the media to another source and still have access the media from Apple TV and possibly from ipads, macbooks, ps3, etc. within my house.  I have been looking at upgrading the Time Capsule to a larger capicity one and/or having a backup hard drive to the time capsule.  I would like to know what other people are doing to have these features without filling up their computer's hard drive.  Please advise.  If a media server other than the computer is needed please explain.  Thanks for your help.

Can the time capsule be set up to back up both the computer and the external hard drive, therefore creating a second copy of both?
Can the external hard drive be set up to store all the media which can then be accessed by apple tv and other devises as if the media was on the computer OR will the media have to moved back to the computer's hard drive in order to be viewed on other devises?  Another way to look at this is can you set up iTunes to find the media stored on the external hard drive and access it without moving the media back to the computer?
I realize this must be a problem for many people utilizing iTunes and Apple TV to purchase and view movies and listen to music but the solution does not appear to be easily determined.  I'm sure the first solution would be to just buy a computer with a larger hard drive but that is not the most economical.

  • Source different O/S and hardware from destination

What are the limitations on using Streams to move data between Oracle instances, when those instances differ by O/S and hardware platform?
We're working with a vendor to replicate from an Oracle instance 10gR2 running on an IBM server running AIX, and we're hoping to perform one-way replication into another 10gR2 instance running on an HP server with a Linux Red Hat O/S (both are 64-bit).
I came across this document yesterday, which mentions that it's a bad idea, although I haven't seen the same restrictions in the documentation:
    http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~nimar/papers/vldb05.pdf
Namely, it mentions that in the 3rd & 4th point
    Operational Requirements for Downstream Capture
-The source database must be running at least Oracle Database 10g and the downstream capture database must be running the same release of Oracle as the source database or later.
-The downstream database must be running Oracle Database 10g Release 2 to configure real-time downstream capture. In this case, the source database must be running Oracle Database 10g Release 1 or later.
-The operating system on the source and downstream capture sites must be the same, but the operating system release does not need to be the same. In addition, the downstream sites can use a different directory structure from the source site.
-The hardware architecture on the source and downstream capture sites must be the same. For example, a downstream capture configuration with a source database on a 32-bit Sun system must have a downstream database that is configured on a 32-bit Sun system. Other hardware elements, such as the number of CPUs, memory size, and storage configuration, can be different between the source and downstream sites.
The reason why I'm concerned is that Oracle came to us about 8 months ago and sold us on Streams over DataGuard for a read-only direct copy of data. DataGuard was sold as being tied to having the recovery instance be as identical as possible to the source. They led use to believe that there were no such restrictions for Streams. So, we didn't add any provisions for purchasing a Replication tool. Now I'm thinking we might need to spring for ODI or something ...
Has anyone found differences in hardware and O/S to be a problem when using Streams?
    Thanks

    Sorry, wrong link initially.

I have no experience with downstream capture, which ships archives from one platform to another.
If you are not using downstreams, then heterognenous platform work fine over SQL*NET (dblink).
I have already operated in production Windows to Solaris multimaster Streams and would have gladly
exchanged the win box for your AIX.

  • Capacity planning and hardware sizing

    Hi,
I would like to know in detail about capacity planning and hardware sizing while deploying oracle database products. I need to know about properly planning the infrastructure and configuring and deploying the products. Moreover, when should we use RAC,how many nodes, exadata, DR etc. How to size hardwares RAM,Disk for this kind of implemetations.
I know it depends on budget and environment. Still if anyone kindly give some links/docs I will be able to have a decent start in this domain.
    Regards,
    Saikat

See , they all depend on your company policy and the database size that they are going to have.
    1. Size : i have worked on databases sizing from 80G to 2000G , all depending on the client or the industry you are catering to.
    2. hardware and Ram : Server Team should know this better , you can have a simple small server if the DB and application are small and the usage would be less. If it a full fledged system with high load then you need to get in touch with your server team and raise an oracle SR for exact specifications for that database and also plan for some future growth.
    3. RAC : depends on the project if it requires such a setup.
    4. DR : is for disaster management. Also all companies implement this by adopting data guard ( physical standby).
    5. For having a good start , start reading the books and refer to oracle documentation. More you refer , more knowledge you will get .
Start with the basics.... make your basics strong.. and then move ahead with complex setups.

  • Migrate oracle 9iR2 database from Suse to Red Hat???

    Hi Everyone,
We're going to move an oracle 9iR2 database from Suse to Red Hat. At this moment I don't know the detail about the platforms yet. I still like to ask a question if DB backup on Suse is compatible on RedHat? Physical restoring may be our prefer instead of exp/imp.
    Any advices?
    Thanks,

I'm pretty sure (never did it myself) that there will be not problem when moving the database. The Oracle software is the same (at least when you use the x86 version) so
the format of the datafiles and controlfiles should be identical.
However some configuration files (network settings) might differ so try before you die :-)

  • Subject:  DBConnection fails from 64Bit OS to 32Bit OS using Oracle 9iR2.

    Message:
Hi, I have a problem connecting to Oracle Database in the following scenario. Anybody's help is very much appreciated.
    Scenario:
    1. I have two servers [Say A - with Windows server 2003 (x64 bit edition) and Say B - with Windows server 2003 (32 bit edition)]
    2. Oracle 9iR2 (32bit) Database is installed on B.
    3. Oracle 9iR2 (32bit) Client is installed on A.
    4. I have an application (running as service) developed using C++ on A.
    5. I use the oraOLEDB to connect to the database (9.2.0.1.0)
    6. When the application is running in debug/release mode the connection gets established.
    7. When the application is running in the service mode I always get the following error "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name"
    8. I have verified the TNSNAMES.ORA file and the contents are valid.
    9. Listerner is running fine on both the systems.
NOTE; I have to use only OLEDB. Please do not suggest me to use any other connection mechanism.
    Do I miss something here?
    Thanks.

Basically ORA-12154 means, service name can't be found in tnsnames.ora or this file can't be located at all. Are there multiple ORACLE_HOMEs on the machine ? Is the application based on OLEDB running in a different home , NOT in the client's ORACLE_HOME? You may set TNS_ADMIN, pointing to your tnsnames.ora, as global environment variable. So each application on the machine will know this location.
I'm sure this is not a problem 64bit versus 32bit.

  • Oracle ADF Model and BC4J api reference in JDev 10.1.3.03

    Hi
Where I can find Oracle ADF Model and Business Components API Reference in JDev 10.1.3.03? Maybe it's not ready yet?

I don't know how up-to-date they are, but the javadoc files are all archived into jar files in the JDeveloper installation at: <jdev-install-dir>\jdev\doc\ohj. Most of the business component interfaces and classes are covered in the bc4jjavadoc.jar. You can either open the index.html file of the jar in JDeveloper and move through the links in the preview pane, or use the jar utility (or other unzipping util) to extract the jar file into your directory structure and then access the html files directly.

  • Oracle 9i Lite and Satellite Forms on the Palm

I would like to use Oracle 9i Lite 5.0.1with Satellite Forms EE 4.1 on the Palm
The docmentation from each company refers to the other company's documentation and no instructions seem to
exist. I am begining to suspect that to abilty to use Satellite Forms and Oracle Lite on the Palm does not actually
exist and that one must develop applications in C using Code Warrior or other tools.
I would like to use a Satellite Forms application on the Palm running with the RDK to access and store tables
stored in an Oracle Lite database on the Palm. I would then use the MSYNC to move data from the palm to
    my Oracle 8.1.7 database server
Satellite Forms appears to store each of its tables as a separate pdb but oracle uses a single pdb for a database
containing multiple tables. There is a check box for Oracle compatible tables but not method to associate
satellite forms tables with an Oracle Lite database except for a link to an ODBC database. The Oracle ODBC drivers
point either to the Oracle database server or to an Oracle Lite database on a PC but not on a Palm.
I can move Satelittle Forms tables from the Palm to Oracle 8.1.7 using ODBC on the PC when I do a Palm Hot Sync
    using the Satellite Form conduit
I can move Oracle tables from the Palm to 8.1.7 using MSYNC, the Oracle Mobile Server, and the Oracle Lite
    http conduit
I do not know how to move Satellite Forms tables on the Palm to Oracle Lite tables on the Palm.
The only way to use Satellite Forms appears to be to move Satellite Forms tables on the Palm to Oracle Lite tables
on the PC and then use Oracle Lite Msync on the PC to move the data to the Oracle server. This seems to have no
advantage over going from Satellite Forms directly to the Oracle Server via ODBC
Does anyone have any additional information about current or future capabilities. There may have been something that
worked with older versions of Oracle 8iLite 4.0 and Satellite Forms 3.5, but I do not see anything that works now

According to Metalink Note:207303.1 - Client / Server / Interoperability Support Between Different Oracle Versions you shouldn't have problems, as long as your 9i Clients are at least 9.2.0.4.

  • Migration Oracle 9iR2 - Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, please, help

    Good day!
Now I study examples from tutorial book "Oracle 9iR2 Data Warehousing"
(translated to Russian) written by Lilian Hobbs, Susan Hilson, Shilpa Lawande. However my Oracle is "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition" and ( as I thought ) for this reason I can't perform these examples.
Please, help me, if it no hard.
First example founded on using "Oracle Database Configuration Assistant"
and "Oracle Enterprise Manager Console". However, I not found them at
    "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition".
Now I use only "Oracle Application Express" ( and SQL ). Please, tell me,
if "Application Express" has enough functionality with comparision to
"Oracle Database Configuration Assistant" and "Oracle Enterprise Manager Console"
and how I need to do ? (It must, because 10 > 9)
Second example founded on using SQL. First 80% SQL-commanfs of this executed succesfully. But command "CREATE TABLE easydw.purchases" has error message
"PARTITIONing is not available." Really, in "2 Day Developer Guide"
(SQL Reserved Words ) PARTITION is not exist.
Can I CREATE TABLE easydw.purchases by "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition"
(with PARTITIONing by other means of SQL )?
There is full text of this SQL-Command:
    CREATE TABLE easydw.purchases
    (product_id varchar2(8)
    constraint not_null_product_id NOT NULL
    constraint fk_product_id

    shipping_charge number (5,2),
    today_special_offer varchar2(1)

    PARTITION by RANGE (time_key )

    pctfree 0 pctused 99
    storage (initial 64k next 16k pctincrease 0)
    tablespace purchases_jan2002,
    partition purchases_feb2002
    values less than (TO_DATE('01-03-2002', 'DD-MM-YYYY'))

    partition purchases_mar2002

    pctfree 0 pctused 99
    storage (initial 64k next 16k pctincrease 0)
    tablespace purchasee_mar2002 );
Naturally, I also shall continue try find solution.
    Winni.

    Winni,
Partitioning is only available with Oracle Enterprise Edition.
Here is a list of features by edition:
    http://www.oracle.com/database/product_editions.html
DBCA is not needed with Express edition because you can only have one XE database per server, and all options are pre-configured.
Enterprise Manager Console is not included with XE - only with the other editions.
You can get most of the functionality through SQL, Application Express and SQL Developer.

  • Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle DB for ERP System

    All,
I have a few questions about using Oracle Linux 6 and the Oracle Database for our ERP Server. We are using a System that run off of Appache httpd and Tomcat and connects to an Oracle Database. We currently are running as a hardware installed server, with Oracle Linux 5 and 10gR2. We are looking to migrate to a Virtual environment as we run VMWare for all our other Servers and services. I have started the install of a development/test system. I wanted to install Oracle Enterprise Linux 6 x86_64 along with either 10gR2 or 11gR2. I noticed that 10gR2 was not certified on OEL6 hence why the thought of moving to 11gR2. The one issue I have is the ERP system is not a x86_64 system is there any way of running 32 bit apps on a 64bit OEL install? I would need to compile a few small 32bit C code programs so would need 32bit libs to compile against. Any support would be greatly appreciated. I know that OEL has an i386 install but I also know that the x86_64 has more support for Oracle DB.
    P.S.
Our ERP System is programmed via a small company that does not certify anything. They have taken the approach if it works it works (not happy with this but it is what it is). So the main issue is I need to get Appache Httpd, Tomcat running along with ability to compile a few small 32bit apps.
    Edited by: Rever75 on May 7, 2012 1:45 PM

x86-64 is an extension of the x86 32-bit CISC instruction set. The 64-bit extension provides support for long mode to address larger virtual and physical address spaces.
You can generally run 32-bit applications on a x86_64 bit CPU and a x86_64 kernel, provided you have the appropriate i386 libraries installed. When you install Oracle 11gR2 11.2.0.1 for x86_64, appropriate i386 libraries are a prerequisite.
Since x86 on a x86_64 CPU is still hardware, there will be no performance penalty to run 32-bit application. Btw, you cannot run 64-bit applications using a i386 kernel. The only exception I know is Mac OS X.

  • Need help recreating this in Oracle (Temporary Table and a Cursor)

    Hey all,
My client has asked me to see if it's possible to move his SQL Queries into Oracle, and then move EVERYTHING off of MSSQL into this new oracle environment. The problem is, I wrote the entire MSSQL system, and i know nothing about Oracle.
Basically, I need some examples. I have been stumbling around Oracle for about a year now, so i'm 'somewhat' familiar with it.
Basically, i'm going to create a script/stored procedure that will first:
Create and define a temporary table that is used when the script/proc is called.
Then, thru cursors, i'm going to add a bunch of lines to it.
Finally, i'm going to Run a select statement against the temporary table we created.
Now, I can't create a table on the server, as the production environment will not allow it, so i need to be able to create this virtually inside the script, and then it automatically self destructs at the end of the script.
If anyone knows if this is possible, please post me a few links to examples, or just lay down the code to get the temprary table made.
We're using TOAD as the interface.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Thank you for the warm welcome.
The SQL looks something like this:
(Before you get lost in the code, this is an abreviation of the code, but every function is represented. This will also work in TOAD Script? I'm most worried about the use of how a Table is declared in Oracle, as i've seen many different versions of how to do this. Thanks)
