Oracle advantages over MicroStrategy

Can anyone point me to a good web site (or provide some info) regarding the advantage of using Oracle's BI toolset versus MicroStrategy? I'm having a hard time convincing upper mgmt to go with the right tool. My admitted personal bias (I'd rather quit than work with that particular tool again) is well known, and rather than being a "sky is falling" sort of guy I'd prefer to have some ammunition to justify my preferences.
TIA

Hi,
It's just my opinion....
You need to first plan & chalk out your Hardware / Network / Infrastructure / MiddleWare / Application strategy before investing in a Portal. I have had this argument with a couple of my friends over weekends ( Oracle Portal vs. Microsoft SharePoint ) & after lot of heated debates, we figured out that the picture is much larger than just " Portal ".
If you have your IT Infrastructure built around Microfost Products & Services, I would say that SharePoint is a good investment. If you have your IT Infrastructure built around Oracle, Oracle Portal is the way to go !
Of course, I can go on & on about the advantages of Oracle Portal....personally, I have found it very scalable, robust & it's support for almost all the emerging standards / technologies is really awesome.
Again, it's just my opinion....I too would like to hear other view on this....

Sandeep

First, this is a forum of volunteers.  There is no "urgent" here.
"Urgent" means one of two things -
    1) people are dying, or
    2) you have a customer-facing, revenue-producing production system that is down.
(And to get some perspective on the second case, keep the first in mind.)
For the first, you call whatever civil emergency service seems appropriate.
For the second, you open an SR with Oracle - which requires a paid-up support contract. For *them* to consider your problem "urgent", you will need to demonstrate that your problem falls under item #2. I seriously doubt your problem fits that criteria.
You don't have a support contract?  Now you know the exact dollar figure that your company places on the data.
That said, you need to understand a few things about your specific problem,
First, port 1521 is only used by the listener to accept a connection request.  Once it gets that request (and finds that it is for a service (sid) that it knows about, it will fork a server process and tell the requesting client that it can communicate with that server process over some other port .. a randomly chosen port number in the "high" range.  It could be your vpn is blocking that other port, whereas your internal firewall is not.
But this is just an educated guess since I cannot find "can not connect remote oracle database over VPN" in any error message manual. If you had mentioned the VPN along with an actual oracle error message we could be much more precise in our diagnoses and recommendations.
    ---- edit 22 Sep
It occurred to me that I just assumed you were using the same client machine in both cases ... a laptop that you use both at work (local network) and home (vpn).  If that assumption is false, there are probably problems with your tns setup on the home (vpn) machine.
But again, it would be much easier to help if you gave us an actual error message.

  • W5XX professional users - does win 8 have any advantages over 7?

I expect that many or most W5XX owners use their workstation lappy primarily or entirely for work. I do.  I have 2x 30" monitors, 32 GB ram ( and use it) , and hundreds if not thousands of apps installed, and have probably 20+ open at any given time.
Trying to move to a new HD, I accidentally installed windows 8, and, before going back to 7, decided to try it for a few days.
Like many, i hated it with venom for its unintuativeness (had to google how to close an app, and how to launch an app).   I have used Windows since version 3.1, Unix since SCO, Mac since the Mac 128, and I could not figure how to close an app or launch an app with keyboard and mouse.  I was stunned.
So i did a lot of googling and viewed many tutorials, and got to the point where I could install and run most of the apps I would need.
I quickly realised that ALL metro apps are completely useless for me.  Why would I want skype or IE to take up an entire 30" monitor, not allowing me to work on photoshop or in Eclipse IDE at the same time as chatting?  They are all glorified toy widgets.
I see the value of windows 8 and metro apps on phones and tablets where really simple full screen apps are at home, and most peole spend their time in twitter, FB and looking at their cat pictures, but I cant see any value on the desktop - it just slows me down.  BTW if I want to look at my cat pictures, I fire up lightroom.
So here is the question: metro aside, on the dekstop, are there any features in windows 8 which are an imporevemnt on windows 7?  I.e. is there a reason to stick with 8 which I havent found yet?  Some feature which helps productivity on the desktop, or some W5XX driver which works better on  8?
E.g. I have heard that 8 boots slightly faster than 7. Is this the only adantage?
I rarely use winows search in 7, as I cant stop it from returning hundreds of hits from my hundreds of thousands of emails, instead of the file or contact I was actually looking for.  i assume windows 8 does nothing to help this.

Having used windows 8 for a week, in my oppinion, there are no advantages over windows 7 what so ever, and many disadvantages, including:
need to learn everything from scratch, you even have to google how to close a metro app or how to shutdown.
or you need to spend time turning windows 8 back into windows 7 using various tweaks and start button replacements.
No noticable speed difference in startup or operation (on this machine at least)
If you have a problem, finding help is very difficult - all the solutions posted are for windows 7.  E.g. Its not possible to change the keyboard mapping windows boots with - it always defaults to US keybaord, I want it to default to UK, but no chance to find a solution.
Metro apps suck in every way.  They are noddy, cut down, dummed down apps desiged for the limitations of small, touch screen devices, not desktops with keyboard and mouse.
the windows 8 start screen is an abomoniation for two reasons:
    a) its a huge disctraction or "cognitive burden" to switch from the apps you have open on the desktop, to a complete full screen colour explosion of flasing icons, find what you want, then jump back.  Its a productivity no-no.
    b) I could never find anything using the start screen, I hated it.  e.g. if you want to find an app, you have to look all through every icon - there is no logic or order.  if its not on the first screen, you have to click the mouse on a little apps arrow, which list all apps in a horrible order.  E.g. each MS app is split, os Word is under W, access is under A. I want them all to be grouped together, but you cant.  WIth the old win 7 start menu, when you click on all programs, you get an order list of all the intalled apps which does not change, so is much quicker.
Windows 8 is obvisly designed and optimised for small touch screen devices.  Its a poor experience for desktop.
Lenovo tools have had most of their functionality removed, and put up as metro apps only. No desktop versions.  Much of the functions I actually used is gone, e.g. the abilty to set the battery into lifespan mode, to make it last a lot longer by not charging it to 100% etc.  Now you have to charge it to 100%, and it kills the battery life by comparison.  Windows 8 is deisgned to run off batteries, not mains.
I had to disable the location services service, as it stopps chrome from working (it cant save anything, eg. you cant book mark, you cant install extensions, you cant sync etc).  Once disabled, chrome works again .  it was holding open the file Chrome uses to save its data.  This wasted me half a day - so as self employed, windows 8 has cost me money to get working I would not have had to spend on windows 7.  This is partly due to lenovos shoddy testing - they have a lot of bugs in their SW, bios and drivers which should have been caught at test time, but more so on windows 8 than 7.
In short, I am dissapointed that there are no windows 8 features which are worth moving to windows 8 for, and I deeply regret my decision to try it.  If it hadnnt just taken me 3 days to install and configure all my apps, dev IDEs, VPNs, databases, VMs etc I woud switch back to 7. Those people who say they prefer windows 8, I dont understand why, but good luck to everyone.
I hope this helps other W5xx owners who are considering the same question.
P.s. I installed classic shell, and highly recommend it as a fully featured free windows 7 start menu for windows 8.1.  One person sais they had luck with installing the unsupported windows 7 lenvo apps on widnows 8, but I am rather scared to do this - I am not sure how they will conflict.
Windows 9 is just around the corner, and who knows if this will cripple business users further, or if all the time you spent learning how to use windows 8 will be thrown away if they go back.  One thing is for sure - windows 8 is designed for small touch screen devices, and home users who use social apps and news primarily.  Just look at what apps are availble in the store.

    Hi,
Just check below link..would be helpful..
    http://www.oracle.com/global/ap/openworld/ppt_download/database_manageability%2011g%20overview_230.pdf
    and
Each release of Oracle has many differences, and Oracle 10g is a major re-write of the Oracle kernel from Oracle 9i. While there are several hundred new features and other differences between 9i and 10g, here are the major differences between Oracle9i and Oracle10g:
Major changes to SQL optimizer internals
    Oracle Grid computing
AWR and ASH tables incorporated into Oracle Performance Pack and Diagnostic Pack options
Automated Session History (ASH) materializes the Oracle Wait Interface over time
Data Pump replaces imp utility with impdp
    Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM)
    SQLTuning Advisor
    SQLAccess Advisor
Rolling database upgrades (using Oracle10g RAC)
dbms_scheduler package replaces dbms_job for scheduling
and you need to refer oracle documentation for sql, plsql references where you will know particular enhancements made...

  • Installation of Oracle 10g over Fedora 8??,

    Hi,
I am installing Oracle 10g over Fedora 8 running on VMWare .
Now the problem that I am facing is listed below:-
--> When i try to run ./runInstaller, it gives me some following error
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /tmp/OraInstall2010-01-17_08-46-12AM/jre/1.4.2/lib/i386/libawt.so: libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
--> When i tried to troubleshoot the same, i found out that i should execute the same using command "./runInstaller -jreLoc /usr/lib/jvm/jre". I don't know why, but the same was given on One Website. Please let me know for the same, as this worked once, and now when I am again trying to do the same, the oracle installer windows open, but with abnormal termination and threw this error
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /tmp/OraInstall2010-01-17_09-15-17AM/oui/lib/linux/liboraInstaller.so: /tmp/OraInstall2010-01-17_09-15-17AM/oui/lib/linux/liboraInstaller.so: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied
Please try and provide me solution for the same.
Also, I wanted to ask that the prerequisite packages, which are needed to install. I install them using yum installer, which always downloads and updates the packages,, Isn't there anything which i can download the same well before and install everytime I needed it. Please clear my way for this, as I always wanted to find the solution for the same.
    Thanks..

  • Mpd: Advantages over other players as single user

    Hey everyone,
I installed Archlinux just two weeks ago and I really like it. As amarok2 is not final yet I am at the moment looking for some alternatives (absolutely don't like juk that comes with KDE4) and I've seen in this and other forums that many people are very excited about mpd. So I tried it out myself (but only installed the console client mpc though) and I wonder what the advantages are over other players that you can use, like amarok, without a daemon in the background?
I know that it is a special server-client structure, but since I am the only person using my computer (a laptop) I don't really think that using mpd would be so great for me, but I don't know if I am missing some important point.
For me as the only user of my computer the interface of the actual player and the features of that player count, and with that in mind, amarok is really great for me. Is there anything that I could be excited about, using some mpd-client together with mpd? mpd itself if I understood it correctly is simply supplying the database for the music, but I still need a player with the features I want, which may be inferior to the features I like in amarok.
I hope you understand my point of view, it is not some bashing on mpd, it must be really great if you have some music server running it and you can connect to it with other computers, but does it have any advantages over the normal players on a single user system?

That's the main reason I liked MPD so much while I was using it. I could shut down the computer while it was playing, then when I turn my computer back on, the music starts playing as soon as mpd starts.
The only reason I prefer amarok over mpd is because if I added a song to my filesystem I would have to update the database for mpd to find and play it. I like just browsing files and dragging them into a playlist, which you can't (or couldn't while I was using it) do with mpd.
Sonota has an option to update database on startup
So does ario-svn. In fact, all of the cool features of sonata that aren't typical in mpd clients I asked the developer of ario to implement. He did.

  • Advantage over C++

What is the advantage of java over C++?Is their any?

    jschell wrote:
Java has too many advantages over C++ to mention. The number of new projects that choose to use C++ over Java is diminishing rapidly. In short, Java is modern, sophisticated, secure, scalable, reliable, readable, etc. and C++ inherently is really none of these when compared to Java.Basically nothing more than subjective bias. You're kidding right? You need to get out more. Or perhaps you truly believe it's pure coincidence and brilliant marketing buy Sun that the world chooses to use Java over C++ for the majority of projects every day.
C++ can do anything java can. That's like saying a PC can do everything a Mac can do. I get your point but it's useless garbage you're speaking.
And excluding the emotionally loaded words that have no objective reality at all (like 'modern', 'readable', etc) things like scalable etc are based on the architecture and design and not the language choice.I agree to a point. Realize that Java is a platform (language, api's, runtime, etc.) and not just a language spec alone. So architecture and design are part of the Java platform.
And although creating a J2EE container from scratch in C++ wouldn't be my first choice of implementation it doesn't mean that it couldn't be done.Again, I could walk to work 10 miles but I can get there faster with my Toyota.
The fact that C/C++ usage has declined slightly has at least some basis in the fact that other language usage is going up, and the tiobe site (which you cite) it is quite clear that java usage has an obvious downward trend from when the data collection started
Java is now much faster than native C/C++ in paralleled environments, which is the future. Sure, you could write C++ code to run in parellel and compete in the performance arena, but your project would take twice as long to code.I would like to see the data that supports that.Okay, at first I thought this was just flamebait from some troll. But now I know that you just don't have a clue about Java. First of all, you can see all the data you like. I just did a Google search and found lots. But here's something I read recently that comes to mind: http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/WebServices/javaC_LRWP/
In any case, this is not my theory and it's well documented. I'm certainly not going to argue a well established fact such as this.
But I'll just say that I haven't touched C/C++ code in 8 years and I'm pretty sure there's a reason.I have touched C/C++ in the last 8 years along with C#, SQL (various dialets), perl, java and various scripting languages. And the reasons for those varied but often included because that is what the customer wanted or because it was best for the job or at least in one case C++ was used because java couldn't solve the problem.Oh, so C++ can do anything Java does but Java can't do what C++ can. I think I get you now. Get some help my man. :-)

  • Advantages over Google Gmail

I see that the web interface to Verizon Email has the ability to hide advertising. This is a nice advantage over the Google Gmail web interface. Are there any other advantages to using Verizon.net Email over Google Gmail?
In addition, are there any documents describing the technical details such as supported protocols and features of Verizon Email?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes, there are lots of advantages to using Verizon.net over gmail.  Here are some:
SPAM:  Unlike gmail, Verizon's SPAM filters are much better at letting SPAM reach your inbox.  Your inbox will be graced with lots of useful messages about auto-loans, health insurance, male enhancement products, women who want to  date you and Nigerian attorneys who need your help relocating large sums of money.
ISP lock in: Verizon email service is excellent at helping you decide to stay with Verizon Internet services.  If you were to switch Internet services, Verizon will require you to pay a fee to keep your email.  This fee will cause you to re-consider changing ISPs, thus helping you remain a Verizon customer.  Contrast this with gmail, which is not tied to any ISP and will not remind you to rethink any ISP changes.
POP connection: Verizon email uses the much older "Post Office Protocol" (POP) to connect email clients to the server.  gmail uses "Internet Message Access Protocol" (IMAP) instead.  Unlike the IMAP, POP makes it easy to have multiple devices access the same email server and maintain separate, completely un-synchronized copies of emails.  With POP, users have the advantage that email deleted on one device is still visible on all other devices.  Deletions must be carried out on each device, thus allowing you to confirm multiple times that you want to delete that important email from the Nigerian attorney.  Further. unlike IMAP, POP eliminates the confusion of moving email into folders for categorization and automatically maintaining synchronization of folders across all email clients/devices.  In short, Verizon's choice of POP spares you from the ease of using an advanced email management protocol across multiple devices/clients.
Hopefully this will help you better understand the advantages of Verizon email over gmail.
    Enjoy!

  • Does TM have any real functional advantages over other solutions?

    Hi All
Looking at possible network backup solutions. Does TM have any real functional advantages over something like SuperDuper? I'm not really looking for an "archive" solution, which is I think how a lot of people perhaps incorrectly view TM, but just something that will allow me to easily recover from corrupt/crashed system - TM seems rather overkill and complex for that?
    Any advice/views appreciated...jeremy

Officially, TM does not work over a network, except via Time Capsule or to another Mac running Leopard on the same local network: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
Some of us are able to use a USB drive attached to an Airport Extreme, or a shared drive on a Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the same local network. Some others are using various NAS devices that claim to be TM-compatible, but often with various difficulties.
So if you're set on a network solution, your options with TM are limited.
CarbonCopyCloner does not work to any network destination, and I don't think SD does, either.
Other than that, TM has two main advantages over the "clones:"
Being able to do hourly incremental backups of new and changed items very quickly, it gives you an excellent chance of recovering something that was changed or deleted in error, or that got corrupted. Most other apps, especially CCC and SD, if they're backing-up your entire system, in most cases just aren't practical to run more than once or twice a day.
Second, since every TM backup is, in effect, a full one, you can restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even if it was a previous version of Leopard or Snow Leopard. Many folks have, for example, successfully and easily downgraded from SL back to Leopard when they found they had incompatible apps or other problems.

  • Does Logic on Lion offer any advantages over Snow Leopard?

Does Logic on Lion offer any advantages over Snow Leopard? Which is more stable?

Thanks for your replies. I have a new Mac Pro and are about to make a brand new install of Logic. As this is a serious time commitiment, because of all my 3rd party plug-ins, software instruments, sample libraries and loops, I want to choose the right OS from the start so I don't have to re-do it again. I have 10.6.8 on my old machine and that has been working well.
My original plan was to wait for 10.8 and do it then. But now I've read a lot of posts saying people are having trouble on 10.7. For obvious reasons, I would prefer to be on the newest OS, but not at the expense of bugs and glitches. I'm also worried that some of my 3rd party stuff won't work on 10.8. Is there a compatibility list somewhere?
I've been with Logic for almost 20 years now, and my experience has always been that it's usually wise to stay behind at least one OS version, in order to get stability and full compatibility with 3rd party plug-ins and drivers.
Is there any advatage with 10.7 or 10.8 over 10.6 in the way assigning RAM to sample instruments is handled?
