Oracle and Sparc license calculation

Hi, i'm wondering if there's any neat formula for calculating maximum number of strands per license?
What I mean is that say for example I have 2 Oracle Enterprise Database licenses on a Sparc T5440 system. How many strands can I use on the system for my Oracle license?

What's a strand?

  • Oracle License Calculation

    Dear All,
We are doing broadcasting business. I have a server which will retreive data from Oracle database. And with the It will then broadcast the information retireved to all the Settop box.
Under this case. If using named user license calculation, the number of license is the number of connections to from the server to the Oracle DB ? Or the number of Settop box using ? total number of audience ?
    Thx for your help.
    Best Regards,
    Hei

Oracle spells this out very carefully in one of the specialty documents available at http://www.oracle.com >> About Oracle >> Pricing and Licensing (or directly at http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/index.html)
In a nutshell: count 1 human who uses the data in electronic form directly or indirectly (via multiplex, web server, application, or other) as a user in Named-User-Plus. Count an autonomous device (transciever) that has no human interface but still interacts with the database as user as well.
ANy time you hit a few dozen users on a database, you should automatically start considering the per-CPU calculation as it does not care how many users are connected - and there is no client access license (CAL) as with some non-Oracle products.
As for the actual price, this is n opportunity to exercise your negotiation skills ... build a business case that shows your optimium fair price and discuss that business case with the Oracle sales rep.
Don't expect discount, and don't lose your cool. Just negotiate with the objective that both sides should and up comfortably satisfied. Your side should get licences at a price that meets your business case requirements; Oracle gets sales, revenue and profit.
However, if you don't have a business case to discuss, Oracle's sales people can legitimately think you are simply trying to get huge discounts. And that is not 'fair'.

  • About Oracle Enterprice edition license...

    Hello,
I downloaded Oracle enterprise Edition 11g (11.2.0.1.0) 's two zip files of about 2 GB. But still i didn't install them.
People are saying Oracle Enterprise Edition costs much. But after logged in to Oracle's account, i simply downloaded the zip files freely.
Shall i install it or not?
Do i need to pay money for Oracle? or Oracle ask money later?
(I am a student and already i am using Oracle 11g Express Edition, which is free, so please don't tell me to use Express edition)
My question is can i use Enterprise Edition or not?
Or has i downloaded any beta version?
Why Oracle Enterprise Edition is available to download freely?
    Thanks in advance.

It's pretty simple. In order to download, you entered into a legally binding contract with Oracle and need to follow the rules of the contract to which you agreed. Most likely you agreed to the contract at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/licenses/standard-license-152015.html
You gave Oracle permission to check on you to ensure that you are following the rules of the contract. If you stay in the rules, you probably don;t need to pay (additional) money.
If you downloaded form OTN, and not from eDelivery.oracle.com, than the license you agree to use basicaly says "You will not give anyone else a copy of the program, and you will not use it in production. You can use it to learn, to study, and to create a prototype." There are other things, but that is the basic idea.
That said, you may the agreement. You should take the time to read and understand it. Anything we say on the internet is useless to you, if you violate the actual agreement and Oracle takes you to court for money.

  • Install Oracle for SPARC on intel machine?

can i install oracle for SPARC on a Solaris x86 box?
As I am not able to find right version for it.

Not, you can not do it because a version made up for Sparc is adjusted to the assembler for that processor. The assembler language of Sparc and Intel are different.

    Hi,
we are trying to search for information about Oracle VM Server Licensing and evaluate the possibility of purchasing licenses.
    We found information in http://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=87615&beginIndex=0&sitex=14405:1435532:US&navTotals=34&navPageSize=25&navBeginIndex=26&navEndIndex=34
Actually we got 10 machines with 8 cores & 32GB RAM. We guess with this hardware we should buy the Premier Non-Limited license, is it right? Or is possible to have a Premier Limited licenses with this hardware?
Licensing, is including future updates for Oracle VM Server 3? In the same way, is the Manager support included?
In the other hand, we would like to know if the Oracle Database included with the Manager has a free license for production environments or is strictly needed to purchase a license.

  • CUCME and CUCM Licensing

I would like to know how to register the licenses ordered for IP Phones to be registered and uploaded
    in to CUCME and CUCM.
I searched a lot of documents but cant find out a proper answer. Could someone help me out on this issue, as I am having 2 projects, 1 with CUCME and 1 with CUCM. The customer have ordered for Licenses, but i dont know how to register it.
    Please help

No, the whole process really is what I've written above. The license file is purchasesd from Cisco, but once you have that file there is no further involvement with Cisco, it's all done on the CUCM.
You license the CUCM to accept a certain number of devices, and then as  you add phones to the CUCM the license totals will go down.
The licenses are in units. So say you apply a license file that contains 1000 units. If you look in the License Calculator, it will tell you how many units each type of phone would use up.
Every time you add a phone (or sometimes a feature such as Mobility) it will use up a certain number of units as shown in the Calculator, and if you ever remove that phone later (say because it needs replaced because of a fault or for a newer model), the units are returned. So for example, a Cisco 7945 IP phone takes up 4 units each, whereas a 7975 uses up 5 units each.
Once you run out of units it won't let you add any more phones until you either remove some devices to get the units back, or you apply more units.

  • Clusterware Pricing and/or Licensing Information for 3rd Party Applications

    Hi,
Can anyone please direct me to Oracle Clusterware 11g pricing and/or licensing information in the scenario where the Clusterware solution is intended for use with a 3rd party application and not with Oracle Database?
Also, in the case where Clusterware is used with Oracle Database 11g Enterprise, does it require a separate license?
I appreciate if anyone can provide me with a link to this type of information.
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,
    Johan

OK - So if there is no RAC installed and you all you need to do is provide Cold failover for an Oracle database instance then yes the Clusterware license is at no charge in this scenario.
    briefly :
you install a Clusterware home - as if you were goin gto create a RAC database
then you install a database software home on each node.
    then you create the instance.
there is a good paper here : http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware
See : Using Oracle Clusterware to Protect A Single Instance Oracle Database 11g (PDF) February 2008
If the software you are wanting to protect 'talks' to an Oracle database
You can either install on the RAC nodes - using the clusterware that is already there
    OR
install Oracle clusterware onto 2 or 3 or more new nodes to build an new application cluster and then install your application.
Either way both meet the terms of the license doc.

  • Will MaxDB beat Oracle and SQLserver in the market?

Somebody tells me that eventually MaxDB will dominate the market.
I do not believe.   Do you agree?   Thanks!

    Hi Lars;
and at first, thanks a bunch for the well-put reply.
    >
    > But to be serious - putting MaxDB into the solution stack and not as a product is a business decision.
    > It's not about technical ability, feature set or something like that.
Yes. I am fully aware of this. It seems the case in most of these situations, and, as I stated, eventually business decisions and strategic decisions are just to be taken as granted.
    > Depends on what "beneficial" really means.
    > SAP does have agreements and partnerships with all the important DBMS vendors.
    > These companies have whole LOBs just for the database product.
    > They make money from it.
    > And they may be annoyed to have another competitor on the scene.
That, for sure, sounds reasonable. But, from that point of view, of course (not wanting to be provocative): If not wanting to be into the database market after all, having partnerships with all major database vendors, and eventually having a load of open source databases out there to build upon for those who don't want Oracle, why bother maintaining "another" custom DBM system after all? This seems somewhat ambivalent.
    > SAP does not do this. SAP does not sell programs. SAP sells business solutions.
    > That's where our money comes from - providing solutions to every customers business so that the customer can make better business.
Yes... Yesss. That's what I see, and that's what we want. We don't really care about buying a piece of DBMS software. Our business is to offer services based upon software, some being third-party code (be that open source or proprietary), some being developed or at least customized in-house. DBMS is something we see as a basic service which just "should be there" without having to bother that much. In most cases (Oracle, DB2, or also mySQL) it is not like this - one has to deal with buying licenses, with education to dig deep into the guts of these systems, and then the "real work" just starts. MaxDB does rather good here leaving this "getting-started" hurdle rather low. And for the rest, at least from our point of view, MaxDB service (support, on-demand custom training, help in performance tuning, ...) on top of this indeed seems a "business solution", thus no contradiction to what SAP business is all about...
I think you are basically right about database market being saturated relating to DBMS as "boxed products". However, the "other" market (free or open source "product" along with enterprise strength support on top for those who want / need it) so far mainly seems dominated by mySQL and, to some degree, postgreSQL. Not sure whether this is (yet?) an actual market, though. Maybe the acquisition of Sun by Oracle and, subsequently, the fact of mySQL being at stake to some degree could be an option for MaxDB to attract more users...
    > One example: remote access to the database systems and the analysis tools of the SAP NetWeaver CCMS.
    > Both of them are crucial for the day to day support for MaxDB/liveCache work we do for SAP customers.
    > Without them, support becomes slow, cost intensive (for us) and difficult.
    > Since SAP customers do have all this infrastructure it's easy to offer them support for a MaxDB that is used for something else.
I see... I also can imagine that supporting MaxDB used for something, well, eventually "unfamiliar" (unknown application / table structure, unknown user infrastructure, ...) is rather more difficult than, say, supporting it for a bunch of well-known applications and environments. From this point, the most straightforward (and eventually only?) way seems a "rent-an-engineer" kind of support approach - have someone visit your site for a couple of days to look around things, to look at what's there and try evaluating what could be wrong / improved / ... . But indeed maybe this is beyond the scope of SAP business approach...
    > Personally I do of course see that there is some interest from the "Open Source" users for such an offering.
    > I also see that there are constraints to the development of MaxDB that maybe wouldn't be so tight if this would be a product on its own (there are really only a few people developing it, compared with other DBMS vendors...)
Or, another way 'round, if people would have paid more attention... Remembering the "dual licensing experiment" of MaxDB < 7.6 beind distributed by mySQL AB, I kinda hoped MaxDB attracting a couple of open source developers to participate in development and, eventually, "adopt" the source code and help driving forth MaxDB as something like a "corporate backed open source" project. Obviously, it didn't seem to work out this way, if it was intended to be like this at all...

  • Oracle WebLogic Developer License (Confusion)

    Hi,
Simply, WL server allows developers to use freely for development purposes. There is a little confusion over "fine-print" on "comercial" purposes are prohibited, so outsourced vendors developing software for say ISV consider commercial purpose (they paid for software development) and need production license to 'develop' application on WL.
Can you pelase clarify this statement? simply, can outsourced software vendor develop applications for a client using developer license?
    Regards,
    TK.

actually, just reading the license text of the free 11g R2 enterprise download:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/licenses/standard-license-152015.html
    LICENSE RIGHTS
We grant you a nonexclusive, nontransferable limited license to use the programs only for the purpose of developing, testing, prototyping and demonstrating your application, and not for any other purpose. If you use the application you develop under this license for any internal data processing or for any commercial or production purposes, or you want to use the programs for any purpose other than as permitted under this agreement, you must obtain a production release version of the program by contacting us or an Oracle reseller to obtain the appropriate license. You acknowledge that we may not produce a production release version of the program and any development efforts undertaken by you are at your own risk.
so it's not quite all that straightforward.... so I suggest that you contact Oracle to clarify your needs.

    Hi,

    Hi
We have done a similar reports. One showing opening stock/Closing stock and another one showing all the transactions for a particular day. What we did was we developed a program to fetch data from MARD table for unrestricted, blocked & Qulaity stock(Our requirement talks only about these 3 stocks). And we scheduled the program exactly at system time 00.00 hrs with A class job.(today's closing day stock is nothing but tomorrow's opening stock)
And for the second report which needs to pick all the transaction for a particular day, we picked it from MB51 entries. It is nothing but query between MKPF and MSEG.
    I hope this helps.

  • 8.0 to 8.2 upgrade: ¿would it affect configuration and/or licensing?

    Hello team:
I am planning the upgrade of an ASA 5550 Active/Passive cluster from 8.0 to 8.2 according to the "zero downtime upgrade" documentation available in the web.
I do not have another cluster for comprehensive testing, but I executed a simple migration procedure on a tiny 5505 and neither licensing features nor the configuration (the command sintax) were affected by this process. I know this is something to care about if you go to 8.3, but this is not my case.
I browsed the release notes of 8.2(5) and no special disclaimer was found by me with respect to this release. So everything should work just fine, but I would like to double check for input with respect to these two subjects:
    1.  ¿Will the licensed features (vpn, concurrent connections, etc) be preserved?
    2. ¿ Will the configuration be preserved ?
Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Rogelio Alvez

An ASA 8.0 to 8.2 upgrade should not affect configuration or licensing. I have done it many times without any problem. Just follow the published procedure carefully and you will be fine.
While you are working on the boxes, I recommend putting ASDM 6.4(7) on them (if it is not already in use) as it is the recommended version for all 8.x releases.

What's so hard about finding a "best linux distro for installing Oracle11g"? The supported distros are listed in the fine Installation Guide for Linux. At the top of the list is Oracle's own Oracle Linux, which is in the same family as Red Hat.

  • Oracle and empty strings

    Hi All,
i'm porting my application to Oracle and i'm experiencing (big) issues since empty strings are treated as null by Oracle.
This is a big issue for me since my application uses empty and null values as two different things (indeed they are different !!), ie, i'm not having null pointer exception, but wrong behavior.
I'm thinking what's the best approach to follow since my appl. must work also on mysql and postgres.
    Three options at the moment:
    1. implement a jdbc wrapper that converts any empty string in something like '~'.
    2. using aspectj, add some aspects to setString/getString converting any empty string in something like '~'.
    3. buy a commercial driver that makes difference between empty and null (using aforementioned approaches ?).
I think that this difference in Oracle is really an impediment in doing applications db neutral and I'd like to ask your opinion about the best solution (if someone already resolved it as i guess).
Does anyone know if there are commercial jdbc driver that can help me ?
Does anyone know how ORM frameworks (like hibernate) handle this case ?
    Thanks in advance

You should already have a database layer. You change the database layer. If you don't have a database layer then that means you have another design flaw. And in that case I would really not be the one that needs to maintain that code base.I thought a bit about the value of your answer...but i didn't find it ....sorry but i don't like who replies on forum just to say bad design/bad choice etc...if you have any kind of suggestion you are welcome, otherwise you can spend your time in doing something else instead of reply to this thread.
