Oracle ASM installation and raw device options

I am looking to install Oracle ASM on Linux Red Hat AS 4 (ia64) using Oracle 10.2.0.3.
A general question I have regarding prerequisites for ASM using raw devices. It appears there are 2 options for dealing with RAW devices.
1. Use the ASM library driver
or
2. simply bind the devices to raw devices (and then install a new $OH with an ASM instance)
Is there a recommendation from Oracle, industry best practices, expert opinions on which way to go?
If I understand correctly it sounds like option 2 will require an ASM $OH and instance. Is that right or do both option require this?
Can someone provide guidance as to which option I should use, an Oracle whitepaper, a recommendation, instructions or something.
Any help or insight is provided as to which option I should use.
Thank you.

OK. Perhaps I am a little condused then. From what I read Oracle ASM recommends the use of RAW devices for ASM storage devices. What I have is a new LUN presented to my database server from the SAN. I assumed that the LUN needs to be mounted in some fashion on the server, but my SA tells me in order to mount it, would require the use of a filesystem. If we put a filesystem(NTFS, ext, etc) on the LUN prior to mounting it, will ASM be able to use it? If ASM can use a device that has a filesystem on it will this add unneccessary overhead (I/O)?
I guess my question is for ASM should I
1. use a RAW partition or a filesystem? Does it matter?
2. Will RAW have better I/O performance?
3. How do i make the LUN presentation from the SAN a usable RAW device to my database server? Any steps or guidance would be helpful since my SA and I can not seem to bridge this gap.
Thanks.

  • Reinstall DB and ASM using existing RAW devices in RAC

    Hi,
We have two Database servers in Cluster environment DB1 and DB2 using CX300(SAN) as Storage device.Recently we had upgraded the OS kernel on DB1 from RHEL 3 to RHEL 4 and DB2 is still running on RHEL 3. Due to some application problems we wanted the DB1 to be rollbacked to RHEL 3
    DB1-has ASM1 instance and DB2 has ASM2 instance running.Similary SID1 and SID2 on both of them.
Since we want to roll back to RHEL 3 it is a clean install on DB1. So my problem is I had never done this kind of reinstallation of DB and ASM using existing raw devices.
Can Someone sent me out some instructions and steps on how to do the reinstall without disturbing RAC,DB2 and Data on RAW/CX300(SAN) device.
I am basically a system admin not a complete Oracle DBA.I will be grateful for your help.
    Thanks,
    Shiva

It means, before proceeding a proper database backup must be taken, then it has to be started from scratch. RHEL3 is certified with 10gR1 and 10gR2, you should be aware of the patchsets available for the oracle version.

  • How to check space on asm and raw device?

    Hi All,
I want to know how to check the space on asm device.
we are using asm device which is on raw partition.
Our archive gets full.I need to check the space on asm archve partiotion.
how can i check the archive destination space?
we are using raw device partition for crs and voting device.
how can we check the space on raw device and how can we know which device is in use and which are not in use
    Thanks in advance

    4 - 5 raw partitions...
    What oracle version?
Install OCR + VOTE in raw device better than OCFS2. if you use 10g to 11gR1.
If use 11gR2,keep OCR + VOTE in ASM Disk Group.
you can check which raw device OCR:
    $ ocrcheck
    VOTEDISK:
    $ crsctl query css votedisk
On 10g if use raw device for OCR + votedisk: recommend 1 file = 250M
    11g recommend 1 file = 512M

  • ASM support BLOCK raw device?

Does ASM support for BLOCK raw device? or only there is support for CHARACTER raw device?
Or it is specific to UNIX platforms?
    Thanks.

    790066 wrote:
Does ASM support for BLOCK raw device? or only there is support for CHARACTER raw device? As I understand, ASM needs to be able to open a device using the direct I/O call kernel interface. Old style block devices do not have that, thus the need for raw char devices (on top of a block device) to provide the required direct I/O interface.
But raw devices have been depreciated by the Linux kernel and Oracle also has support notes stating the same. The kernel now supports opening a block device with the O_DIRECT flag set.
Offhand though, I do not see a problem using a device in ASM as long as ASM has access to it (permissions okay, discovery string set) and the device can be successfully opened via the I/O calls made by ASM.
You need to select the most appropriate device interface (if a device has multiple) for ASM to use. I'll expect that ASM notes/installation details from Oracle for that specific o/s will have the details needed to make that decision.
Or it is specific to UNIX platforms?Do not use anything else but Linux for many years now, so cannot comment on how this works/looks like on Unix flavours like Solaris and HP-UX and others.

  • I have the new Oracle 8i installer and here is why

I have been trying to get Oracle 8i on Linux and I feel that I
    must share
my thoughts on the new Oracle installer with everybody.
I hate the new installer. I used to run the installer from
    home over my
128Kbps connection while I was connected to the office machines,
    because it
was simple text based. And Oracle 8i has changed all that!
I have nothing against GUI based installers, only when they have
    a little too
many animated images that eat up bandwidth. I had to drive all
    the way to
the office because I did not have sufficient bandwidth to display
    the darn
ringing bell animated image. This is strictly the mentality of
    Windows users
who like to work on the console of servers.
    And check this out:
line 118 in my install log file at :
    /usr/local/oracle/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log
    says :
    platGroup = WINDOWS
And this is on Linux!!! Maybe the Oracle folks are forgetting
    that Linux
users are a little too sensitive to these kind of mistakes. :)
This also supports my theory that the new installer is a gift
    from Windows
programmers. Who are not too familiar with the idea of being
    able to send
their video display to any computer around the world and work
    from there.
A feature every Linux user takes for granted
There are numerous other bugs in the installer and other routines
    of Oracle
8i for Linux. Some of them I will list here:
    2. The installation types screen list 3 options:
    Typical, Minimal and Custom.
Somehow Minimal takes more disk space (642 MB) compared to
    Typical (585 MB).
Well that is what the installation screen says. I have not tried
    to install
    using the minimal install.
    3. The installation cant figure out how much free space is
    available on the /
partition. Is it that hard? Its gives warnings about how I may
    not have
    enough space.
    4. dbassist cant find the cdrom if you try to install the default
    database
from CDROM. It says cannot find CDROM even if you have all your
    stuff under
    /mnt/cdrom
    5. The docs talk about software mount points and data mount
    points /u01 /u02
/u03 and /u04 that I created, but I could not find anywhere to
    specify them
like I was able to, with the last release.
    6. "Oracle Protocol Support" section during the install shows no
    options at
all. What happened to good ole Net8?
And many others. This product is a joke.

My sentiments exactly. There are so many bugs in the
installation of this release that I have just about given up.
And I haven't even started testing the new features yet!
I've tried the install on RedHat 6.0 straight out of the box (no
patches or updates applied) and followed the OIG and release
notes to the letter. Clearly, no one at Oracle did the same,
because there are many problems during install. I finally got a
simple database running, but there are some real gotcha's along
    the way.
Here are just a few of the bugs I've encountered:
    1. Zero length library file $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libnjni8.so.
Netasst doesn't work without it. Someone said they posted the
source code to the comp.databases.oracle.server newsgroup, but I
    can't find it.
    2. Database Creation Assistant thinks dbmssql.sql is called
    dbmssml.sql.
    3. Building the Intelligent Agent with TCL 7.5 causes a cascade
of undefined references when running gmake -f ins_oemagent.mk
    agent
    4. Database Creation Assistant doesn't understand OFA. It wants
to put all of the database files /u01/app/oracle/oradata/<sid> !
    5. Database Creation Assistant will sometimes prevent editing
the data file names to put them in OFA compliant directories.
I am appreciative of the free developer licenses for so many
Oracle products, but this is the worst Oracle install I've had
    in 12 years.

  • ASM spfile on raw device

How do you create a spfile on a raw device, or how do you move one to it?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi all,
maybe I am the only one, but as I understood Alexander's question, he wants to put the ASM spfile on a RAW device, not the database spfile - but I might be wrong. Alexander?
An ASM spfile cannot be kept in a diskgroup. However, if you choose to manage the ASM environment using DBCA, you can specify a shared location for the ASM spfile in course of the initialization of the ASM environment (when you create your ASM instances for the first time using DBCA).
Once the ASM environment has been created, one may use Ned's approach to relocate a spfile of an ASM environment as well. I am not too sure, but I would think that the sqlplus command "create spfile='RAW device' from pfile; would do the trick, too, given that you have a pfile. Now, if you have a spfile only right now, you can create a pfile first using this command and create the spfile in the final destination later. However, in either case, do not forget to change the pfile link after you have performed those steps.
    Just my 2 cents. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Ipod not recognised in itunes or my computer - and no 'devices' option

I am in Windows XP, 'My Computer' doesn't recognise my iPod and neither does itunes. Please can someone help!?!
I have 60Gb colour screen ipod (but not video ipod) and has worked for the last year approx since I had it, always used to update automatically as soon as I plugged iPod into the computer. I had been using an old version of itunes until last night I was finally told that in order to continue to purchase music from itunes I have to download the latest version (itunes 7.02). This downloaded fine but today went to sync my ipod and get the new music/podcasts on my ipod and I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my ipod at all.
I don't have a 'devices' option (just Library, Store, Playlists), no iPod symbol and 'Sync ipod' in 'File' cannot be selected. Can't find ipod in My Computer either. All it does is charge when I plug it in, even though battery is already fully charged!
I have tried restarting computer, plugging in ipod before starting the comp, uninstalling and re-installing itunes, checking in 'run' etcetc
Please help...can't put any of my music on to my ipod
    Thx

Just in case this problem is affecting anyone else - I have since found the following post by 'Thegua' and it has worked so thank you so so so much!!
(I only had to get as far as reinstalling my iPod, didn't have to continue on to doing the 5Rs, and I didn't lose any music) THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!.....
The solution 2 ur problem is the ipod 5R's . u will need 2 reset ur ipod and if possble reinstall de ipod and itunes softwares. but first u will need 2 try reseting ur ipod , it will not delet the songs on ur ipod, it refreshes ur ipod. try that first. move de hold button near de earphone hole. it has a red sign. move that switch back and forth about three times and press de select button (middle ) and the menu button all at de same time , then hold dem both until u see de apple logo appears (apple sign). the release all buttons, ur ipod is reset. if this work then do the 5R's.to know wat de 5R's are go to apple.com and u will see it at de left hand corner of ur screen. it is five steps that will correct any problems u r having with ur ipod. it should correct them. it involve resetting ur ipod, restarting ur computer, reinstalling ur ipod and itunes softwares and runing de updator files, and all that. try it, if that dont work it means u will have 2 send the ipod 4 repairs.

    Hi buddies:
I need to create a Physical standby database for a 2 node RAC cluster on Windows, that is using RAW devices.
Can someone of you suggest me a note to follow in order to achive this, i can not find to much information about how to do this.
I guess that the best option would be to use RMAN to do this, but as i said before i havent found too much information.
I would really appreciate your help.
    Kind regards

In this case the standby should be created as a single instance on regular files.
Do i have to specify something different in the duplicate rman command to specify that the standby database will be a single instance?

  • Oracle report installation and system flow

Please help me to give some inputs for the oracle development. The 12 reports wont integrate with the existing system because it was not built by us and also I want to know how the oracle report installation will be done. Please update my diagram scenario of the proposed solution as below
Problems Faced in the existing system:-
    ================================
    •     12 Critical Finance Reports not generated according to user requirements
    •     Most of basic feature for reporting purposes are not implemented in current system which is in Oracle Apps 11i - E-Business Suite
    •     Takes a lot of time to prepare reports which are needed to be presented for management meetings.
    Proposed System
    ===============
    Expectation
    •     The finance dept plans to redevelop 12 new critical reports for their system
    •     The new implementation must be compatible with the future migration of current Oracle Apps 11i - E-Business Suite to Oracle Apps version 12.
    Solution
The new development will be built using the oracle reports and won’t be integrated with the existing application. Oracle reports do not require any specific installation to be done at client PC.
    Advantages
    •     If it's from a desktop users may find it easier to fire the reports as they may not require to login to Apps.
    •     When the Report is displayed, the user can simply generate the report to several formats like PDF, XLS, HTML, RTF, XML etc.
    •     Oracle Reports is reliable: You can serve thousands of concurrent users in a secure and reliable manner.
    •     Oracle Reports has the ability to apply changes to a report based on a customization file in XML either at runtime or in batch.

Not a great idea to introduce additional s/w layers between the CRS software and its OCR and voting disks. If ocfs2 is for example used as a shared file system for these devices (files), then the ocfs2 cluster s/w needs to be up and running, the shared devices mounted, before CRS can successfully start. Thus any problem with the ocfs2 stack, will impact on CRS. Why? What does ocfs2 buy you in this regard? What are the benefits that justifies the increased complexity and the dependency of CRS on another s/w layer?
Fewer moving parts means less complexity, less stuff that needs to be configured and can go wrong. In fact, some users had perception that " Pay mroe so that Get more".
