Oracle backup to networked disk (Windows)
I'm trying to back up my database to a Windows share. Currently, Oracle is running under the SYSTEM account, in a two node cluster that uses Fail Safe. I know it should be running as Administrator, but when I set the service to run as Administrator, it only starts the service, not the database. At that point, I can log in through sqlplus to start the database manually, but when I tried that it was down a couple of hours later, which was probably the next time someone tried to use it.
I've done some checking on permissions. I know Administrator has full control over all the datafiles and everything I checked in the ORACLE_BASE folder (c:\oracle). I've started a service request, but was hoping someone here might have some insight for a faster answer. I have had a few less than stellar experiences with service requests recently.
Our database is currently a little above 1TB. We are currently moving from 147GB 10k disks to 300GB 15k disks. We will probably make another improvement to our storage before the end of the year, and still use up most of everything. There is even talk of implementing a system that would take ~35TB of disk space. Unfortunately, I'm just a developer who got stuck with the DBA work.
Did it occur to you it is much cheaper to
BUY EXTRA DISKSCheaper than what? Writing software correctly so you can do a backup directly to another machine, in case the power supply blows or some other disaster fries all the drives? That doesn't sound cheaper. Adding another clustered RAID array isn't my idea of cheap.
I consider requiring a customer to buy extra disk space to write a file so it can be moved elsewhere a stupid design, especially at the insane price of Oracle software. If I can get this working, impress everyone with the volume of data being thrown around, and show a speed issue with using the Windows share, then I'm sure buying more disk is an option.
However, telling someone that because of software issues, they need to spend another several thousand just so they can use their current, valid backup solution that cost a few thousand will make them less than happy. Me basing this on, "I can't get this to work," also sounds like a bad idea. It took them 6 months to get a backup solution better than sticking a USB hard drive on one node.
I'm aware that running an export isn't a good way to backup data, but it beats not having any other copy of your data at all. At least, it would if it would run without getting an "error in writing to export file."

Backup my network disks/file storage so it can be reverted later.
Hey, i've got a file server running, every user got it's own storage. Is it possible to make a backup of this disk to different location without VSS?
It's just needed because what if an user deletes a very important file accidently... then he needs the IT group to be able to recover it. Not himself. that's what i had in mind.
Thanks.Hi,
We could not use Windows Server Backup without VSS. Windows Server Backup uses VSS and block-level backup technology to back up and recover your operating system, files and folders, and volumes.
You could restrict uses’ permissions to restore files from a backup. Members of administrators group and backup operators group have the right to restore files and folders on a computer by default. Members of the Server Operators group on domain controllers
also have this right. Other user accounts or groups must have the Restore up files and directories user right specifically assigned to be able to use Windows Server Backup to restore content to a computer.

Restoring iTunes media from backup on network disk.
I backed up my iTunes media from my Powerbook G4 to a hard disk on a PC over my home network. Recently, my Powerbook was stolen and I've now replaced it with a MacBook Pro. How do I restore my iTunes media to the MacBook? iTunes wants me to insert a disc prior to restoring from backup.
Thanks!I figured this one out myself! I copied the backup to my MacBook, then found the right folder in the backup to drag into my new iTunes folder. It just took a couple of minutes and I was up and running.

Time machine unable to access network disk
I have a USB disk attached to my Airport Extreme, and use it as the target of my time machine backups from my mac book pro (connected via WiFi). For the most part things work fine. But if my macbook goes to sleep, after it wakes up it often (not always) gets the next time machine backup to fail with a message saying that it cannot access the disk. At first I found a brutal method of correcting it: I would disconnect from WiFi, go to my AE and power cycle it. After it came back the macbook never had any problem with the disk. A little more exploration indicated that Lion wasn't unmounting the disk properly. The following works (but sometimes requires a few iterations): I'll go to finder, eject the disk, and disconnect from Airport Extreme, and then go to the terminal and do
sudo diskutil unmountdisk disk1
(I first do a diskutil list to find out the right disk)
and then ask time machine to backup again. Many times I have to repeat this a few more times before it "takes". Has anyone else run into this? It clearly looks like a bug in Lion, since it never happened until I upgraded.
Victor
PS. I understand that Apple says that they don't support time machine backup to network disks. But they do to a time capsule! It isn't really different.I'm replying because, while I don't have a solution for you, I was experiencing the same issue at home not long ago. My solution has been to backup at the office (), but I'm about to switch back to running Time Machine at home. I think we'll be going through this together.
The difference in my situation is that my backup volume lives in a PowerMac G5, but I'm sure it's the same error. -

RMAN backup to remote disk in Windows
Hi,
I'm running Oracle 9.2.0.1 with Windows Server 2003 in both Server A and Server B. My prime DB is stored in Server A meanwhile my RMAN Catalog is in Server B. I’m running RMAN to do backup of the DB in Server A which is running out of space. So, I have decided to store my backupsets to Server B since I do have few hundred Gs there. Overall, I will push the backup script from RMAN Catalog in Server B and will store the backupsets back to Server B.
My problem is whenever I run the script, no matter either from Server A or Server B, I’m getting the following error. Attached together is the RMAN configuration parameters.
Error:

My Login ID exists in Administrator and ORA_DBA group in both Server A and Server B. I can manually run the path '\\ServerB\f$\drdb\backupset\’ from Server A and able to create/modify/delete a file inside this folder. But I don’t understand why getting the ‘Access denied’ error? Anyway, is this a correct way to do backup into remote disk? I’m quite new to Oracle and just attended RMAN course with OU. I have Google-ed this problem but none can assist me. Please do help me or share your knowledge to resolve this problem.
Thanks & regards,
NesanHi Andre,
Yes you're correct, it's because of the Oracle service which run under Local System Account. I have went to it's properties and changed the logon details to my own Login ID which is Administrator for both Server A and B. Now my remote backup is working great...
But does this changes will affect other apps/jobs/results in Oracle?
Guys,
If you have any better idea to solve this issue please drop into this thread or let me know if you find anything wrong on my solution.
Thanks a lot for Andre.... You have solved my 2 weeks problem.
Regards,

Hi,
I am trying to run an online backup of oracle through db13 to disk on netweaver 710, however, there is no option to set the backup to disk that I can see. Is there any parameters that needs to be set in order for this to run, or am I missing something obvious?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jayas we are having problems with an external backup implementation Backup exec 11d will not run an online oracle backup fully we have been told that there is a problem in the software and we are waiting for a hot fix to come out to resolve this, I would like to set up schedules in db13 to backup to disk whilst this problem we have is not resolved. is there a way or is brtools the best option?
Thanks again for your help.

Making rman-backup-to-shared-disk fix-up work how i want it to
Greetings Oracle Network!!
(Oracle 10g enterprise edition on windows server 2003 platform)
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_os_error_os5_access_denied.htm
is a link where a fix to locating rman backups is suggested. it asks me to change the oracleservicesid logon. my database is what runs a website. when i change the oracleservicesid logon the website no longer functions.this is undesirable.
how do i fix this??
Even on my test-server which houses databases, changing the oracleservicesid logon to administrator, disables all connections made to the database from the LAN using SQL developer. how to not let this happen??
Please help
Thanks in advance

Your issue is you backup to a network drive.
The solution provided to you by Donald Burleson is correct.
Why the website no longer functions is unclear as you provide no error messages or whatsoever.
An easy solution would be of course to buy an extra disk to connect it directly to the server.
From your post it is unclear why you didn't consider implementing that.
Also your assertion about the test server is way too vague. You again didn't provide any error message.

Oracle Personal Edition installation on Windows ME
I have just installed oracle personal edition 8.1.7 on my windows ME desktop. I have configured a LISTENER and DATABASE.
On trying to get into the Database (through DBA studion or SQLPLUS) I get the error 'ORA-12541:TNS:no Listener'.
I have tried to restart the LISTENER but I can't find tnslnsr or lnsrctl in my /BIN directory.
Can anyone please help.
Find below my listener.ora and tnsname.ora files -

)I had this same problem with this same installation on ME. After a smooth installation with PO 8, I suspected spaces in path names, since the 8i install appears to be java based. If you go into windows regedit (Win ME does not read from autoexec.bat), and search for oracle home, and all 'home' paths you have tried specifying in the initial 8i install interface, upon editing your oracle home path, you may find a space character discreetly tucked at the end of that path name. What's more, just correcting your paths through regedit may only temporarily solve your problem. Also search/correct your prompt. A quick verification of this is if, from a dos window, your prompt looks like:
C:\> _
(notice the space between the > and _ characters) I think this is either a MS bug, or an image disk install bug, and suspect, after reading of your same problem, it comes from MS.
Hope this helps,

Hi,
I am assuming that Oracle 8i Personal Edition for Windows 98 will work on Windows Me too. First of all, is this assumption valid ? If yes, then I am facing a problem right at the start of the installation. After specifying the File location path (For source path, the default is 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\STAGE\products.jar'. I have not changed this. For destination path,(oracle home path), I am specifying it as 'C:\Program Files\Oracle'. After this I get an error as follows - 'There was a problem in accessing the staging area. Please make sure the specified values for 'Source' and 'Destination' are valid.'
I am stuck up at this point. Please let me know what could be the problem.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Oracle Backup End to End Automation with BRBACKUP and RMAN
Hi,
We are about to implement a Oracle on mySAP 2004 or 2004 i.e. either NW2004 or NW2004s. Currently we are on DB2 UDB.
We are going to use legato for backup.
legato networker module (I guess this is module built for BACKINT) for SAP is too costly, so we are looking at alternatives for backup using legato without using networker module.
We have virtual tape library (disk that emulates as tape library). we plan to keep 30 days/versions of backup there.
Can we use BRBACKUP and RMAN to achieve end to end backup automation without using networker module by using the BRBACKUP delivered options and integrating to RMAN.
I do see BRBACKUP options like tape_box and pipe_box. Are these will be useful to achieve this.
Other question is do we really need to integrate with RMAN. What are the advantages.
So far I see the advantages with RMAN are 1. incremental backups. 2. Online backups are handled more consistently than normal.
Appreciate your information.
Thank you,
Ravi Gandavarapu.Hi Jason,
Yes, we have SAN storage. Also thinking to use split-mirror for production.
Do this need legato networker module. Or we can put a script without out the module also?
>>There is one little complexity to this but if you're interested I'll explain it. <<
Would you please explain what it is ?
Again for my dev and qa systems we are not planning split-mirror.
My plan is to back them up straight to VTL (disk based). Do you think using RMAN here helps (because of incremental) ?
I was recently going through 10g features. Looks like 10g has a feature that you can merge incremental with level0. Does brbackup supports this?
Appreciate your info.

Is it possible to restore TSM/ADSM RMAN backup pieces to disk manually?
Is it possible to restore TSM/ADSM RMAN backup pieces to disk manually, and re-catlog as disk backups?
Oracle 10.2.0.3
TSM client 5.5.1.1
SUN Solaris 10 64-bit
We are gearing up to switch from IBM's Tivoli (TSM/adsm) to EMC's Networker (Legatto), and the old TSM software drivers are going to be uninstalled.
In a worse case scenario, we would therefore not be able to easily restore using RMAN and TSM just after the switch, and before new backups are made on Networker.
To be comfortable with the backup methodology change, we need to explore restoring the RMAN backup pieces of a given tag using TSM commands (dsmc ?) to a filesystem, re-catalog the backup pieces now on disk, and then perform test restore/recoveries using RMAN with disk channels.
Does anyone know of the TSM command (dsmc ?) to perform the restores of RMAN backup pieces?
Thanks! This is a set of guesses and thoughts.
1: When you say you are removing the Tivoli software drive, is this just the driver from the oracle home, or is it more substantive. In fact could you have a different oracle home to access tivoli, possible with a rman catalog copy.
2: I dont believe the backup tag is part of the filename, however is it possilbe to query the rman catalog to get the filenames mapped to a tag?
3: Providing you know the filenames you wish to restore then it is possible to browse the tivoli catalog. Its ages since I've done this but doesn't samc have at interactive mode
Apologies if these suggestions are rubbish and hopefully someone gives a better answer.

Does Logic 8 have an autosave option?
Oh please say yes! When I worked with the far inferior Cubase VST, with OS 9, I could tell it to autosave once every minute. It didn't save over the main song. A special, autosave copy of the song was saved. This prevented so much work from being los
