Oracle BI Discoverer 10.1.2.3

Greetings All,
In order to integrate BI Publisher with Discoverer here are the steps I found:
1.      Have access to or have Installed Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.2. Then download and install the one-off Discoverer Patch. Go to the Oracle MetaLink ( http://metalink.oracle.com/ ) site to download patch # 5648158.
2.      Have access to or have Installed Oracle BI Discoverer 10.1.2.3.
3.      Have access to or have Installed Oracle BI Publisher Enterprise and BI Publisher Desktop, version 10.1.3.3. Note: BI Publisher Desktop requires a current installation of MS Word.
4.      Set up Discoverer Web Services and define its authorized users. Then, establish the BI Publisher Security Configuration by using BI Publisher Enterprise Security Center.
I have question about about step 2. I cannot find any info on downloading and installation of Oracle BI Discoverer 10.1.2.3

"Upgrade to 10.1.2.3
This is not currently a must-have upgrade. and if you have already installed it I urge you to de-install it. This was released as part of Application Server 10g patch set 3 and you are urged not to apply it just yet (click here). When this is ready, which will not be long, it will include all of the bug fixes from 10.1.2.2 CP6 as well as the web services patch 6622352 (see below). Hopefully even the bug fixes from CP7 will be included too."
Is this patch "safe" to install?

Hi Michael,
Looks like I need to do the following:
Install Appserver 10.1.2.0.2, upgrade to 10.1.2.2 by applying patch 4960210, apply CP6 6669033, apply webservices patch 6622352.
The patch 4960210, CP6 (6669033), webservices patch (6622352) should be applied on top of full blown appsserver (which includes among other things web disco) or can they be applied on top of Business Intelligence (the version of appserver that has web disco only)? pls see http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/101202.html

Oracle 10g Discoverer Reports & export to xls fails for large reports

Hi ,
We have following configurations:
1: RHEL 5.4
2: Discoverer :Version 10.1.2.48.18
3: Oracle10g Apps Version : Version 10.1.2.0.2
Issue:
Most of small reports works fine ....but when large discoverer reports are executed the page
keeps on refreshing for 15-20 hours but no output ....same for export to xls ......
But same reports works fine in oracle9i for same data voulme....
Observations:
When on linux with top command the processes are monitored its observed that discoverer process
dis51ws dies for large reports after 1-2 minutes ...& the page keeps on refreshing but no output....
for 1-2 minutes it consumes 50-80% cpu utilisation then process disappears & cpu 80% idle ...
It seems that as 10g Apps is installed on RHEL 5.4 ...non certfified OS causing an issue...
Can any one adds more inputs in this regards......

Hi ,
as per Note: 466697.1 ....its an memory error....& need to increase MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem
But we already have slowly increased MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem to below very high values ...but the issue remains same.......
as per note we are getting Logkeys: exceptions discoiv.servlet_exceptions error but
after that we are not getting below error ............
Unexpected error in state machine: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
Hence I presume that its different issue rather than memmory....
Below are pref.txt values..........

Also we have raised an SR & as per SR .............all below settings are tried as per SR except for applying a recent patch....

Discoverer performance is largely determined by how well the database
has been designed and tuned for queries.
A well-designed database will perform significantly better than a poorly
designed database.
Workbook design can also affect query performance.
1. Apply latest Discoverer patch as documented in <<Note:237607.1>>
'ALERT: Required and Recommended Patch Levels For All Discoverer Version'.
2. Increase the maximum JVM heap memory:
In general, the default values for the minimum heap (-Xms) memory and
maximum heap (-Xmx) memory are sufficient.
However, if your organization consistently runs large Discoverer queries
then you may benefit from increasing the maximum heap memory from the
default values.
This is recomended if your users are typically running large queries via
Discoverer Viewer.
Increasing the JVM memory can help to avoid "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError"
in Discoverer Viewer:

Discoverer Viewer/Portlet 10g Performance And Stability for specific
details.
3. Disable Query Prediction:
Query Prediction provides an estimate of the time required to retrieve
the information in a query.
The Query Prediction appears before the query and consumes time.
Edit the <oracle_home>/discoverer/util/pref.txt on the middle-tier
server and set:
QPPEnable=0
Also set:
QPPObtainCostMethod = 0
4. Uncheck the 'Enable fantrap detection' checkbox.
When the box is checked, every query generated by Discoverer is
interrogated. Discoverer will detect a fan trap and rewrite the query to
ensure that the aggregation is done at the correct level.
Please refer to <<Note:210553.1>>, Oracle BI Discoverer: Fan Trap
Resolution - Correct Results
Everytime for more information on fantraps.
To disable, in Plus go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Fan Trap
settings.
In Viewer go to Preferences and uncheck the box.
5. Disable Materialized Views/Summaries
In pref.txt add parameter:
MaterializedViewRedirectionBehavior = 0
Value equal to 0 ensures that Materialized View (MV) Redirection is
always performed when MVs are available.
6. Improve query performance by optimizing the SQL.
In pref.txt modify/add following parameters:
SQLFlatten = 0
SQLItemTrim = 0
SQLJoinTrim = 0
UseOptimizerHints = 0
If value of SQLFlatten is 1 then Discoverer will merge inline views in
the query SQL where ever possible.
In case of SQLItemTrim, Discoverer will remove unused folder items from
the query SQL where possible and for SQLJoinTrim Discoverer will remove
unnecessary joins from the query where possible.
UseOptimizerHints will add Optimizer hints to SQL if set >
0.Unnecessarily making Discoverer perform these checks consumes
resources and rather than increasing the performance may reduce the same. So unless you feel these checks have to be performed depending on
requirements, assign zero to these parameters.
7. When Discoverer builds a query, Discoverer makes a database security

Discoverer Administrator is a client side tool, you must install it on your machine or even you can install discoverer administrator in your server but you must connect through a connection string which you must enter in your tnsnames

How to skip "Connect to Oracle BI Discoverer" window while redirecting URL

Hi,
When I am redirecting my discoverer plus URL from my UI screen by providing connection details discoverer first open "Connect to Oracle BI Discoverer" window and then it automatically redirecting to reporting window in which report is getting opened.
How can I stop "Connect to Oracle BI Discoverer" window to be opened first. I don't want to open this window because I am directly passing my connection details in URL parameter itself.
While redirecting, only report window should be opened.
How can I do this ?

QUESTION:
When we choose a connection or enter the connection details at the Discoverer 10.1.2 Plus login page, the screen flickers and then the connections page is displayed again. After this the Applet starts but in a different window. Is there a way to make Plus start in the same window?
ANSWER: By default, Discoverer Plus is designed to launch in a separate window from the connection screen. However, to answer your question, yes, you can make Discoverer Plus use the same connection. To do this, you append the following to the end of the URL:
*?_plus_popup=false&framedisplaystyle=embedded*
If your standard URL is http://server.my.com:7778/discoverer/plus
you change this to: http://server.my.com:7778/discoverer/plus?_plus_popup=false&framedisplaystyle=embedded
This time you will see the Discoverer connections page, applet loading, and Plus interface all appear in the same window. You will also see loading messages and an hourglass display as the session starts, loads, and renders.

i have oracle database 11g as warehouse (O/S; windows xp Sp2) .
i am going to use Oracle BI Discoverer 11g as BI tools , i can not find it's software in OTN to download .
i have download "biee_windows_x86_101341.zip" and installed it but discoverer is not in that zip file .

Hi Padideh
You will only see the pubic connection link if you install a full-blown appplication server and attach Discoverer to an infrastructure database. That database would have the OID schema.
You can certainly use Discoverer against a data warehouse. In fact working with star schemas is the best way to get Discoverer working well. You simply launch the Discoverer Administrator tool and create one or more business areas by importing object definitions from your target data warehouse. You do not need a patch for this.
May I give a word of advice? If you don't know how to go about creating good business areas and making database content available to users via Discoverer then you should get some training. Trying to make Discoverer work well against a data warehouse with no knowledge of Discoverer or OWB will give you problems and could cause you to have an unsuccessful implementation. My company does training in the US at good rates (http://ascbi.com/training) if you are interested, or you can go to an Oracle University class (http://education.oracle.com and type discoverer into the serach box at top right) or just look on line where you will find lots of companies offering training courses. If you are outside the US I know of several places in the UK or, as I say, take a look at the Oracle University offerings.
In a previous part of this thread you asked about the metadata repository and repositort assistant. Those both belong to Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) and have nothing to do with Discoverer.

List of custom Discoverer reports?!!! Shows that you do not know anything about Discoverer.
Custom reports are designed as required. You can't get a list of such custom reports. If anyone makes such a list it will be specific to their client/company.

for the administrator and desktop you should find the language settings in the regedit of the windows where they are installed.
the nls_language is in the home you defined for the discoverer to use.

I need some guidance to install Oracle Configuration Manager.
I have just successfully installed Oracle Fusion - following "Fusion Middleware Installation Guide for Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.6.0) (Part Number E10421-07)" without OCM. I have EBS 12.1.3 and rdbms 11.2.0 on the same server.

Oracle EBS Discoverer as a data source for OBIEE 11g

We are a heavy user of Discoverer workbooks with Oracle EBS. We're moving to OBIEE 11g(11.1.1.3) and have an RPD with both 3rd party and custom content.
I wanted to ask the experts here how I can leverage my Discoverer investment with out a lot of re-work in OBIEE. I briefly looked at the MigrateEUL.exe and it says it can move an EUL to an RPD, but talks about some limitations for complex EULs such as an EBS Apps EUL. Even if it created an RPD, I'm not sure how I can merge my current RPD and this newly gen'd RPD.
I also heard from someone that there is a way to setup Discoverer EUL as a standard data source in OBIEE 11g and consume it directly. I'm looking for a document or blog that explains these steps. Any pointers or experiences with the above is appreciated!!

My personal expreriences:
The Metadata Conversion Utility is an accellerator / assistant. It does not provide you with an end product. There is some additional handwork requiered. It could be a risk when you copy an old Oracle Discoverer environment. Shit in is shit out. Last but not least; There is not yet a workbook migration utility.

Joining tables in Oracle BI Discoverer Plus 10g

My company just implemented Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer Plus 10g and I'm a little confused. It looks like this new version of Discoverer was created with the idea of "simplifying" things for the end user. But it seems to be lacking crucial features that our power users need. Like writing their own SQL statements.
Does anyone have any suggestions? What version of Discoverer should our advanced user's use? Can you suggest another tool? We could always give them SQL Developer, but this seems like overkill. It seems like Oracle has ignored a certain market segment. That is the power user segment. There are many users who can write SQL but do not work in IT. SQL Developer is too much but Discoverer is not enough.

These days, Oracle is much more accepting of carrying on and even improving legacy products, so long as there’s customers willing to pay support fees.
You just have to see what happened to JD Edwards. When Peoplesoft purchased this several years ago they hardly made any improvements to it and it was being run into the ground. When Oracle purchased Peoplesoft they acquired JD Edwards too but rather than letting the slide continue they have actually have been actively improving it. So much so, that they have issued a major upgrade, thus prolonging the life of JD Edwards for years to come. Oracle could easily have let it slip into obscurity and told the JD Edwards' customers that they needed to convert to E-Business Suite, but they didn't. This is despite the fact that JD Edwards runs on one of their prime competitor's platforms, the IBM AS400!
So you see, Oracle are not going to cut off their nose to spite their face. I think Oracle has being very professional with regards to the products that it has acquired. They don't seem to be acquiring them with the intention of dropping them. They seem to be genuinely interested in market share and keeping customers happy. At least that's the way recent acquisitions have played out - like Siebel Analytics - aka OBI Enterprise Edition.

Oracle BI Discoverer Dashboard

How I can setup the dashboard in oracle BI discoverer

We are using Discoverer on a stand alone server, however, it is integrated with Single Signon for security. We also use the Discoverer Porlet provider to push content to our Portal environment. This gives us a really good dashboard capability while also providing the Discoverer Plus and Discoverer Viewer tools for those who need the detailed information provided in our datawarehouse. We did not enroll in any type of Early Adopter program. I'm not sure if that would be a requirement for integration with the APPS suite or not. Thanks.
