Sorry I'm a little late coming into the conversation. I came across this thread because of a blog that hit my google news this morning which linked here.
I find it interesting that you feel increasing the cost of the exams will effectively reduce the number of cheaters to the point where the value of the certifications would be increased.
I'm sure it may help minutely, because anytime you increase limitations you're going to decrease participation, but people that have money cheat too. What you're proposing will hinder the ability of anyone that wouldn't be able to afford the cost of the exams, honest people included.
The answer to reducing the number of cheaters is to increase the awareness in the community. Let the industry know that Oracle doesn't mess around when it comes to cheating. Information like what I have listed here (http://www.certguard.com/decertified.asp) is helping to do that in the Microsoft communities.
If anyone from the Oracle Certification Team would like to contact me, please do. My email address is in my profile.

*<p>The results of the Oracle Certification Program's 2009 Salary Survey, which was administered via the Internet earlier this year have been released.</p>*<p align="justify">Responses from Oracle Certification E-Magazine subscribers, Oracle Certified individuals, and visitors to the Oracle Certification Blog are included in the survey results - with participants from every demographic region worldwide.</p>
<p align="justify"> Of the 2,337 individuals who responded to the survey, 95% are employed either full- or part-time and reported that those who are Oracle certified typically earn an average salary that is $10K higher than candidates who are not certified.</p>
<p align="justify"> For full details, visit Oracle Certification 2009 Salary Survey Results.</p>

Am I the only one who doesn't see any figures (tried in FF & IE). Selecting from the LOV makes the page load but selecting an option e.g. regional salary / experience doesn't show anything.
    Edit: Europe doesn't show actually.

A reminder that the Oracle Certification 2009 Salary Survey is still online and we look forward to your input. The survey is being conducted to help us understand the salaries that certified people earn, how they compare globally, and how holding one or more Oracle certifications has benefited your earnings. The survey is open to all Oracle Certified Associates (OCA), Professionals (OCPs), Masters (OCMs) and Experts (OCEs) worldwide as well as those not currently certified.
The survey is open now, and remains available through Tuesday May 12, 2009. This survey is completely anonymous and does not ask for any personal information. We've kept it brief with only 17 questions and takes less than 20 minutes to complete.

  • Preview: Oracle Certification 2009 Salary Survey Results

Thanks to everyone who participated in our salary survey. We are busy working to compile, summarize and publish the results. The information will be available through the Oracle certification website and I&rsquo;ll let you know through the Oracle Certification Blog when it is ready.</p>
<p>In the meantime however, I'd like to share some pre-release details that are interesting:</p>
    <ol>
    <li>Certified professionals earn over 13% more than non-certified counterparts.</li>
<li>Years of experience in a role makes a big difference in overall compensation.</li>
<li>Pay between various job roles (architect, developer, administrator) can be markedly different.</li>
<li>Professionals who have earned more than one Oracle certification earn more than those hold one, and typically - the more certifications that you hold, the more likely you are to earn more.</li>
    </ol>
<p>I&rsquo;ll discuss specific results in more detail when the salary survey results become available, and give my perspective on what it means to certification-holders and those considering certification. </p>
<p>I look forward to your comments and thoughts!

Your statements may be ambiguous, I cannot be sure what you mean by 'fundamentals exams'.
There is a developer track for those interested in PL/SQL developer, is that what you are looking for?

I've now read on your subject what you meant by fundamentals +(if all else fails read the original posters question)+.. ie 9i DBA OCA and 9i DBA OCP .... no for you forget those and and follow the link to the Pl/SQL developer track ....
Edited by: bigdelboy on 09-Aug-2009 16:28
Exam order is not important, but you dont get certificates unless pre-requisites all met. The is an interesting cheap beta exam arround at present if you are up for it ... 1z0-144

  • Which is the best Oracle certification for a programmer

    Hi,
I have been doing web development in java for about 2 years now. I already have a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science but I want to stay competitive and am considering an Oracle Certification. The problem is that I am having trouble deciding which one to pursue. I am trying to keep emerging technologies in mind and I know that cloud computing and mobile devices are taking over. But I still know that there are many other companies out there that aren't ready for all that. I have found certifications such as:
    Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer
Oracle Certified Professional, Java EE 5 Web Component Developer
Oracle Certified Professional, Java EE 5 Business Component Developer
Oracle Certified Professional, Java EE 5 Web Services Developer
Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect
Oracle Certified Expert,Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 JavaServer Pages and
    Servlet Developer
Personally, I think that "Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect" looks the most attractive because it seems to wrap everything into one. But the prep time and costs for this are both pretty high. Does anyone have any good information or experience that can help me make a better decision?
    Thanks a bunch!

But I also doubt whether the question raised was clear enough for the person to be answered! - just my two cents ....Even if my question was not clear enough (which it was), i would expect someone applying for a senior position such as technical architect position to ask clarifying questions. My point from the beginning was, you absolutely are not qualified to become a technical architect with just a certification. Here is how the interview went
Me - How do you find out what your browser is submitting to the server from a purely client perspective?
Candidate - I will put the receiving server in debug mode and print out values.
Me - What if you don't have access to that server?
Candidate - Well, its my server.
Me - Okaay, you open your browser and go to CNN.com and click on a link, how do you find out details about that request?
    Candidate - You can't.
Me - So you are saying you can't inspect what your browser is sending in http requests?
    Candidate - yeah....i guess.
Me - Have you heard of tools such as wireshark, firebug, httpfox, http analyzer, tcpmon etc
Candidate - No, never heard of it.
I ended the interview after that.Hmm. Probably this guy didn't know what he was talking about, but still I wouldn't necessarily demand from someone applying for an architect position to know the gritty details of development; that's too low level for someone who should be focusing on the big picture. I'd rather have someone that knows how to design and guide people to build maintainable systems in stead of someone that knows how to sniff packets.
But then again you'd have to define what the architect role in this case exactly means. For all I know it is actually a senior developer position with a slightly better ring to the title ;)
