  • Apache Tomcat vs IBM Websphere

    Hi,
In our current deployment, I am using Apache Tomcat as the Java Application Server that comes bundled with Hyperion Planning 9.3.1 suite of applications. The documentation also suggests Oracle Application Server, IBM Websphere and BEA WebLogic. Currently the application stack is Hyperion Planning only, with Financial Reporting for the reporting needs.
For our current situation, we have shortlisted between using the bundled Apache Tomcat or IBM Websphere. For comparison I wanted to know how stable Apache Tomcat is in general compared to websphere? How many concurrent users can it handle? Are there any specific limitations of Apache Tomcat that I should consider? Can someone list the major pros and cons of each?
    Thanks in advance
    Shehzad

I agree with Jake.. Tomcat can handle much more than a few users. Whether it can handle the load for your environment may depend on your usage pattern, size of forms, etc.
We typically use Tomcat for our Dodeca product that uses the Java API to talk to Essbase. It doesn't product 'forms' but rather just transfers data via XML between the client and server. With that product, we do have one customer that is serving appx 7,000 users on a single Tomcat server. In that case, however, the usage pattern is that field users log in daily (or sometimes weekly) and run a few reports (that retrieve data via XML).
Note that Tomcat has a configuration parameter in the server.xml file to set the max number of threads that can be spawned by the process. You may want to tune that parameter if you decide to run Tomcat in production (and absolutely be sure to give it more heapsize in the java options).

  • J2EE APPLICATION ON OAS10G AND J2EE APPLICATION ON IBM Websphere

    Hi All,
As you all know that there are many application servers in the market for deploying the application so I just want to know why we all choose Oracle Application Server 10g for deploying J2ee application and why some choose IBM Websphere for deploying J2ee application. Is there any doc which specifies that Deployng J2ee application on Websphere is better than OAS 10g.
    Regards
    Kumar

If you have to choose an architecture now, I would advice not to choose Oracle Application Server, but BEA WebLogic. On Oracle Open World I learned that Oracle will stop developing on OC4J, so WebLogic seems the smarter choise.
To either choose weblogic or websphere has to do with a lot more then just the J2EE specs. It also has to do with knowledge of your collegues (who have to support either of these products), company strategy, etc. Therefore this question cannot be answered that easy.
Personally I think an all Oracle stack is just fine, WebLogic has a richer featureset then WebSphere (AFAIK). WebSphere is not a bad product though.

IBM Websphere Vs Oracle's Weblogic server
Can ODI run on IBM Websphere?
How feasible is it to shift ODI from Oracle Web logic to IBM Websphere?
What challenges , efforts required in ODI code to do so?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Dinesh.

    1. Well for your 1st question I believe you can.
    2. I believe it will go fine because you just need one application server to deploy your ee agent.
    3. I have never tried IBM websphere as an application sewrver in ODI but it shouldnt be that much completed as you are thinking. Better you do R&D in your local system. Also I am not sure about the issues you will face in future. ( for ex maple PermGen errors, issues in clustering etc)
    Thanks

  • JMX monitoring front Coherence cache running on IBM WebSphere

I have a question regarding JMX monitoring a Coherence front cache running in a IBM WebSphere v6.1 JVM (1.5).
My setup is that I have three Coherence nodes (back cache) each running 10 JVMs each. Via JMX all these 30 JVMs are setup to be monitored from one of the 30 JVMs which is configured to be the JmxServer for the other 29 instances. The other 29 JVMs set -Dtangosol.coherence.management.remote=true at startup to indicate that their MBean tree will be managed centrally. This works fine but when I try to extend this to also be able to manage the front cache (running on WebSphere on a separate node in the tier above) by adding the same flag (-Dtangosol.coherence.management.remote=true) it does not appear in the MBean tree as the other 30 Coherence cache (Sun) JVMs do.
Are there other things I have to consider to get this working? There are no firewalls in between the nodes so that is not the problem. How much of IBM WebSpheres (non-standard) JMX-functionality is required to get this to work?
    /Jonas

How is the WebSphere node connected to the cluster? Is it using TCMP? Extend?
Local, Distributed, Replicated, Near, Overflow, External and Optimistic cache statistics appear in the Coherence JMX server. However, near and local caches created on extend nodes do not appear. Therefore the -Dtangosol.coherence.management.remote=true on an Extend client will not register the near or local caches.
    Thanks,
    Everett

  • IBM WebSphere App.Server 3.5 StdEd + Oracle 8i for repository ?

I want to install IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 3.5 Std
but I don't have a DB to hold the repository.
One of the possible DB mentionned in the install doc is ORACLE
8i but I have no experience whatsoever with this line of
    products.
I would like to hear of people running such a config.
    Any tips, do's and don't ?
Is it a stable, recommended configuration to start with ?
    E.G.:
    WAS 3.5 standard on Win2000
    + ORACLE 8i as a repository DB
    + AS400 serving corporate data
    Thanks for your help,
    Frederic.
PS - I know DB2 is another possibility but I would like to skip
    that one for some reasons.

    Matt :
I eventually chose to keep the InstantDB repository because
someone told me it would be fine for a small web application.
One thing I am wondering about though : IBM doc mentions Oracle
8i but on the Oracle site they mention 9i only so
    - where do you find the 8i ?
    - is the 9i fine too ?
    - what edition is acceptable ? the cost for the personal/pro
etc. licences do vary quite a lot so which is the cheapest
    acceptable one ?
I am still looking for that info.
    Any hint ?
    Thanks !

    David,
Thanks for your detailed response. I will try all that you suggested and let you know my observation at the end. To give a back ground of the application I am working on.
    Background
Try to replace home grown cache (very well optimized uses custom serialization using NIO bytebuffer etc.,) my mandate is to replace the legacy cache with coherence (I love coherence product (at least 3.4) from my previous job experience). Since all kind of optimization is done in legacy application I am converting NIO byteBuffer generated by legacy serialization to byteArray and converting ByteArray into POF. Also for various other reasons, I have to send entry processor to do even get and put data from the cluster.
    Raw Data Set Size
My data size is just 500MB (In Production). I put enough cache nodes so that raw data is just 50MB per node. (Since it is compute heavy with entry processor and the number of clients are going to be ~2500)
What was happening when I got the exception?
I was doing stress testing of the cache. Not sure if that put lot of garbage in some of the node hence may be the garbage collection pause triggered the re-distribution of partition set. Since the stress testing was on the way it might had cascading effect on all the nodes.
    Datagram Test result.

Regarding Size (to keep the extend client always connected to the proxy)
I do size request every 5 sec. if there is not other request has gone to the cluster in the past 5 sec.
In one of the oracle presentation it was said that "If you have map listener's and no other request from a long period of time extend client has to do a periodic size request to make sure that connection to proxy is alive"
In this regard my question is "Can the same effect achieved by doing member listener on the extend client and on disconnection do the size request?"
    Proxy Size guide lines
In production number of extend clients are going to be ~2500 connected all the time.
Of which 2000 clients with few map listener + entry processor gets (Each of the clients will have distinct and disjoint set of data on which they work and listener)
And the remaining ~500 clients will do all kinds of request on the entire data set.
In this circumstance is there any recommendation for Number of extend-client : Number of extend-server : Number of threads ratio?

    /Anand

  • Are there specific reasons for choosing Oracle A/S 10g OVER IBM Websphere ?

Our company runs a number of Oracle applications and currently supports both the IBM Websphere and Oracle
10g A/S application servers. We use Oracle A/S to run Oracle Forms/Reports, as
well as to interface from Oracle Advanced Queues (A/Q) to the outside world
(with JMS over A/Q). The idea being floated is to use Oracle A/S only for our
Forms/Reports server and IBM Websphere for everything else. Is there any
    downside to this ?
Is there anything Oracle A/S can do that IBM Websphere cannot ?
Would any features of Oracle A/Q not be accessible when using WebSphere ?
We are also planning to use Oracle Workflow. Would there be any advantages to using Oracle A/S over Websphere ?

'Fraid I'm not experienced in running Oracle products with Websphere but I'd have thought that the most obvious reason to use OAS would be that (theoretically at least!) AQ and Oracle Workflow should be better integrated into OAS and also recieve better support from Oracle if you are using OAS as your apps server rather than another vendor's product. The risk is that you might get into a situation where something doesn't work and Oracle say it's Websphere, phone IBM and IBM say it's AQ - phone Oracle.

  • IBM websphere 8 and Oracle RIB

Hi, somebody have been ibm websphere 8 with oracle retail 13.2 and oracle RIB

  • Deploy on IBM WebSphere 6

I am trying out a small 'HelloWorld' stateless EJB from scratch.
Deployed it on JBoss & Weblogic (used jboss.xml & weblogic-ejb-jar.xml respectively -which gives jndi binding) using ANT and build file.
But same thing when I am trying on IBM Websphere 6 - it seems to be complicated. I tried to edit 'ibm-ejb-jar-bnd.xmi' - but the attributes are bit confusing and when I tried to deploy the application thr admin console, there are too many steps to follow.
1)Can any body provide sample 'ibm-ejb-jar-bnd.xmi' ? The one generated by WSAD seems like using runtime classes bindings. Also, whether this file is sufficient?
2)What is the simplest way to deploy on WebSphere 6?
    regards
    Manisha

    Hi Manisha,
    A few suggestions.
    1. Please build your J2EE application/EJB/Web Module using WSAD 6. So you will get an EAR, EJB Jar or a WAR file. During build WSAD will create the xmi files.
    2. Using WSAD now export your EAR/JAR/WAR files to your disk.
    3. Stop WSAD.
    4. Start your Wensphere App Server 6. Open admin console.
    5. I don't remember the name of menu, should be install applications, import he EAR/JAR/WAR file created by you on server.
    ===================================================
    Another process may be,
    1. Use the xmi file generated by WSAD as your starting point. Then edit it as per your requirements.
    2.Compile your classes.
    3. Create a JAR/EAR/WAR file out of your classes and deployment descriptors and xmi files.
    4. Start WAS 6, open admin console. Go to installation. Provide path of your JAR/EAR/WAR file. Follow the installation steps.
    5. During this process RMIC compilation will also happen and container will generate required classes and compile them.
    6. Finish your deployment.
    ======================================================
If you need any further help do let me know with steps followed by you.

  • WAR deployment to IBM WebSpherer (jnlpdownloadservlet)

I want to deploy a self-created WAR file (created e.g. with Venus Application Publisher) to IBM Websphere (3.5.4). The WAR-import process itself works fine. But the web application does not work.
Clicking/launching a JNLP-File over the download-servlet causes an response (on the browser) "The document contained no data...".
The Websphere log says something like:
    "Basic Protocol lookup"
"Error code returned for request: /TestApp/test.jnlp"
    "Response: com.sun.javaws.servlet.DownloadRequest$NotFoundRequest"
Has anyone suggestions about possible mistakes ? Or running examples ... ??

Have you find a solution ?
I have the same problem but I have com.sun.javaws.servlet.DownloadRequest$NotFoundResponse. For me, WAS don't understand the path. I don't known why.
    I need Help
    Thanks

  • Oracle BAM 10.1.3.4 and IBM WebSphere MQ 6.0, Enterprise Link Plan does not

    Hello All,
    1. I have a BAM 10.1.3.4 installation and a IBM Webspehere MQ client V6.0 installed in the same server
    2. Have configured JmsAdmin appropriately to have a Topic Connection Factory and a Topic Pointing to a Queue in the Server
    3. Have tested the client connectivity using ivtRun and MQIVP.class, they seem to work fine connecting to the channel and the topic.
    4. I have configured an EMS for IBMWebSphereMQ in BAM with the below given parameters

    5. I have a subscribe plan configured in to enterprise Link which has a EMSReceiever and a grid to display the messages
    6. I have the "run forever" flag checked in the Receiver and go a head and post a message in the Queue configured in the server.
    7. The plan does not display any messages in the grid.
All configuration on the MQ Server and Client side are proper but BAM EL Plan is not displaying the data in the grid.
Have also had turned on DEBUG on the servers and restarted BAM, they don't seem to throw any errors.
Kindly advice, what could be wrong in the Plan or EMS configuration which is causing this.
    Thanks & regards,

Is this working for you? What errors do you get in the logs (bam, EL)?

    Best Regard.

I had this issue too. I removed all non-Oracle classes (javax, org.w3c) from the jar file and things then worked as expected. Basically, these javax and w3c files were duplicating versions already existing in the WPS classpath (I presume) and were causing the failure.
    Hope this helps.

  • Oracle Coherence Technical Architecture

    All,
I am currently looking to re-architect a Java based web service project that handles millions of (read-only) transactions a day. We currently return results very quickly (~3 milliseconds per transaction).
We have 12 application servers running IBM Websphere Application Server that hits a 3 node Oracle RAC. Very few database calls are made, however, since important data is held in an in-memory (heap) cache that is currently about 6 GB. The data isn't static, but it is only updated 4 or 5 times a year.
New enhancements are going to push the cache size to around 25 GB. We could get new RAM, but we have run into garbage collection issues with the current heap size.
I am researching new caching implementations, and Oracle Coherence has come up. I have two questions:
    1) Do the coherence servers typically sit on the database tier, or the application tier?
    2) Does anyone have any performance metrics on local, in-memory cache lookups versus using a distributed caching approach like Coherence?
    Thanks,
    Jon

    2) Does anyone have any performance metrics on local, in-memory cache lookups versus using a distributed caching approach like Coherence?
IMHO, you should measure scenarios relevant to you, not use other people's metrics which likely are not applicable to your environment and requirements anyway. You should write your own tests with data retrieval and data storage implemented for your needs and optimized for Coherence's capabilities.
    Best regards,
    Robert
