Oracle database and Windows Vista

When trying to install Oracle database products (9i as well as 10g), I'm politely told that there were known compatibility problems prohibiting installation of Oracle on Vista. Any known way around this? Any schedule for a Vista compatible version of Oracle?

I've sucessfully installed 10gR2 on Vista Bussines
setting the Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode on the
setup.exe file and completly disabling DEP.
Hope this helps ...great, of course this helps. My hat is off to you - I mean, setting compatibility mode for setup.exe is a essentially a no-brainer but how on earth did you manage to find out about DEP having impact on the setup. .
Can we assume that the installation works,i.e. instance up, mounted and anxiously awaits being provided with data? Listener(s) listen and talk as expected?

    Hi,
I had installed Oracle 10g in my system.
    Operating System is Windows Vista.
When I open sqlplusw and login as Scott User... I get the following errors
    1. SP2 - 1503 : Unable to Initialize Oracle call Interface
    2. SP2 - 0152 : Oracle may not be funtioning Properly
    And the window close immediately.
Can anybody provide a pointer to it... :)

Then how can I install .... Oracle 10g in Vista.. Is there any wayYou can't. Well, you can try but be prepared for a lot of frustration.
Some users got it to install, others have had all kinds of problems.
Either way, it's not supported by Oracle.

  • Oracle database and Windows Active directory authentication

    Hello,
Our developers have created a couple of web apps which look at our oracle database. Presently they use the APPS user and the user/password is hard coded into the config files.
Is it possible to authenticate these using Windows Active Directory instead? Is it possible to use AD authentication for all developer access to the database?
I'm trying to research this on the web but getting very confused. Would a lot of work be involved to get this up and running?
Is anyone able to offer and advise?
    Thank you very much
    Sarah

I don't have experience in joining a Linux system with Windows AD, and it generally does not sound like the best idea to me, but since Oracle Enterprise Linux is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the solution you are looking for could be called Winbind.
Perhaps the following links are useful:

  • Can we install oracle 10g database on Windows Vista Home Edition?

Can we install oracle 10g database on Windows Vista Home Edition?

You didn't specify which Oracle10 Edition.
In the case of SE/SE one/EE, with a paid license Supported has a mean impact on production environments with paid licenses, since you wouldn't run on an unsupported platform facing the risk of being left without technical support from Oracle in case of an emerging issue.
For the XE Edition, this is not a certified combination, since the only certified editions are the Business, Enterprise, and the Ultimate editions, but you can try it, you don't have nothing to loose, supported, certified vs. unsupported in this case makes no difference since this XE is not supported either way (no patchsets, no bug fixes, no technical support from metalink), just an AS IS free software.
On the license agreement terms displayed when you download the XE software it states:
    "No Technical Support
Our technical support organization will not provide technical support, phone support, or updates to you for the programs licensed under this agreement."
    and
"THE PROGRAMS ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. WE FURTHER DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS AND IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE."
In case someone would be able to win a trial against oracle due to damage from the use of this software, the amount paid at maximum is 1,000.00 USD, not enough to even pay the lawyer's lunches.
For the XE users the primary source of 'kind of support' is the oracle forums, either the installation forum, the general database or the specialized XE forum.
Of course if this is for your own personal use for learning and testing and there are no third parties you could damage by doing this and if you don't have a paid license for this installation you may try it, but don't expect the Enterprise Manager to behave as defined by the manual, most of it won't work since the Home Edition doesn't have the privileges required for EM to work.
If this is your personal computer and when you bought it the computer provider installed from factory Home Edition, and if you want something to work there, you can try to install a Virtual Machine and install Oracle 10g on a supported guest OS.

  • Oracle 10g XE and Windows Vista

I bought a laptop with an excitement; and installed oracle 10g XE, now I can't run the oracle on this Windows Vista? Any guidance and suggestion would be much appreciated.
I couldn't dare to install linux fedora on this laptop which has Windows Vista for a dual boot sytem because I read all negative things in google about the dual bootying system of fedora and windows vista. Any suggestion and guidance would be one again would be very much appreciated.

I have a problem with Oracle XE installed on my laptop 1GB RAM with Windows Vista :).
It installed ok, but when I run my program (Visual Foxpro 9) it stays 30 seconds up to a minute to make a few selections.
The same program on my laptop works fine with other databases installed on windows xp or windows 2003 server.
Also, from other computers I can connect to Oracle XE on Windows Vista and make those selections fine.
I uninstalled Oracle XE from my laptop.
I downloaded Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) Enterprise/Standard Edition for Microsoft Windows Vista and I installed it.
    It's the same problem.
On my laptop, my program (VFP9 - connects through ODBC) or PLSQL Developer freeze when I do a select from a table with 72053 rows (the result has 2000 rows).
If I connect from another computer, where I installed Oracle Instant Client from Oracle Database 10g Client Release 2 (10.2.0.3) for Vista, the select runs instantaneously :)
My head hurts very much at this time.
We bought the laptop with Vista OEM for presentations :) - it's unusable at this point :)

  • Install Oracle 9i on Windows Vista Home Premium

I have a problem Installing Oracle 9i on Windows Vista Home Premium, I cant install it because it throws me an error message saying that is incompatible with my version of Windows. It is possible to install it with some patch or something??

The only patch I know of is called Windows XP.
In case you have not done any internet searches on this, even Oracle Database 10g was not compatible with Vista until Oracle applied some heavy patches and re-released it.
And since Oracle9i is officially deprecated (nearest thing to obsolete as to make no difference) I see no reason for Oracle to backport the patches.

  • How to Install Oracle 11g on Windows Vista

Hi Everyone, this is Abhinay here i am a Graduate Student from Electronics and i am planning to shift to CS background the main thing i want to know from you guys is " A structured procedure of Installing Oracle 10g on Windows Vista"- So can any one of you guys help me out??????????

Hi, how are you doing ?
Just one advice about it. If you want to work with Oracle databases, it will be better to install it on certified OS's. Doing so, you will get better experience and more realistic experience on it.
Following the Oracle database documentation, you will get all that you need to successfully install the database in the certified OS.

  • Is Verizon going to acknowlege the problems with FIOS and Windows Vista

For months now, I have been reading the numerous problems Fios internet customers are having with Fios internet/Actiontech Router and Windows Vista and there has been no acknowledgement by Verizon of this current major issue.
I have also experienced the exact same issue for months now since I switched to Verizon FIOS internet. Previously I had Comcast HSI using my Windows Vista laptop.  I had their service for over a year and I NEVER has a problem with the Windows Vista globe icon disappearing and loosing internet connection. The Globe always stayed on and never went away and I never lost connection when I had Comcast
I had Verizon FIOS installed last September with my Windows Vista computer and my wireless internet connection started to drop from day 1 and it has been a daily occurrence for over 5 months now.  It has gotten so bad, I have had to hardwire my laptop to to be able to use the internet uninterrupted.
This is what daily scenario is:
When I turn on my laptop(with Windows Vista, I can initially get full internet access(with the globe on and it says "Local and internet). After about 10 minutes or less, the globe switches to "local only" and I can still get  internet access.  After another 5 or so minutes, a large X covers the globe and I lose internet connection entirely. The actiontech router wireless signal is no longer listed as one of the wireless networks.  The only way for me to regain internet access is either to restart my laptop or reboot the actiontech router.
Numeorus posts here, over by DSL forums(Broadband Reports),Microsoft's website and a few othere websites detail this issue.
I am extremely shocked and surprised that Verizon has not tried to fix this issue by working with both the makers of the Actiontech Router as well as Microsoft to find out what the problem is and how to fix it.
I would just like to reiterate I strongly believe this is primarily a FIOS internet issue since I previously had Comcast HSI for over a year with the same Windows Vista laptop and I NEVER had that problem. Also,  I can connect to my neighbors wireless connection(she uses Comcast HSI) and when I do, the globe stay on all the time on my computer and the internet does not lose connection.
I know that there are a couple of Verizon employees here. Please tell the higher ups who handle FIOS internet that this is a major issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
P.S: Please don't tell me to go by my own router because then, I will have to deal with the issues of setting it up to work with Fios TV and the related VOD, widgets, remote DVR compatability issues to deal with. I don't think I can deal with the additional headaches.

FIOS is short for fiber optics.  fiber optics is different technology than DSL.
With that said, if you search the Microsoft databases for vista issues with fiber optics, (CURRENTLY THERE IS ONLY ONE PROVIDER OF FIBER TO THE HOUSE, that being Verizon, so yes you can also search Vista issues with verizon and\or fios) and you will find that Microsoft already acknowledges this issue with their software.  AND they offer you a fix.

Production release of XE on Vista beta 2 runs fine.
    http://prpi.blogspot.com/2006/06/oracle-xe-on-windows-vista-beta-2.html

    Hi tom,
So what your saying is that if i really need to run
oracle9i on my vista home premium i should just go
ahead and dual boot my laptop with MS windows XP?You must use a certified OS, 9i has never been supported for windows vista, and most probably it won't be supported. If you want to install an RDBMS you should install at least 10.2.0.3.0, as stated on my previous post.
Vista would just be a host opertating system, in case of using Virtual Machine Software, if you are planning to install 9iR2, and use a certified OS as listed in the [https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/certify/certify.istore_welcome]Oracle Certify Matrix

By 11g I am assuming you mean 11.1.0.6 (11gR1). Pl post which Vista version you are using - 11gR1 is certified to be installed only on Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions.

  • Oracle 9i in windows vista

    Dear all,
I am trying to install oracle 9i release 1 into a laptop running windows vista. the installation is very very slow and terminate with an error.
Is Vista not compatible with oracle 9i? What if i install oracle 10g in windows vista?
    Please someone to assist me.
    Thanks in advance

Windows vista doesn't seem to be worried about old software, and oracle doesn't seem to be worried about upgrading old software. Oracle 9iR1 is not supported for Windows Vista, the only supported and certified version is 10gR2 specific for windows vista (10.2..0.3.0). For further references on certification, check the certification matrix here --> https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/certify/certify.istore_welcome

I have just bought new Laptop with Intel Core Solo Processor U1500 (1.33 Ghz) and 1Gb Ram, and Windows Vista Business Edition.
When I ran Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition Setup on my laptop, setup asked for Administrative Password and then Unknown Error Occured, any idea what could be the problem ?
    Regards,

You didn't mention if you have Vista Home Premium or Vista Home Basic. Whether Vista is 32-bit or 64-bit version. Nor did you mention which version of oracle software you downloaded and used to install.
I have installed Oracle 10g Enterprise on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. It does work. However, I downloaded and used the version of Vista 32-bit.
So, did you use the version of Windows Vista 32-bit or not?
    What is the error message?
People can not help you unless you tell use the error message.
