Oracle Database: productivity increase

Hi all,
in our company we use the three-tier architecture base on Oracle products:
client(web browser) - application server (Oracle AS 10g) - database server (Oracle database 10g).
and we plan to appreciably increase number of clients. And it is necessary for me to define how much it will be necessary to increase hardware units productivity (CPU speed in MHz and RAM capacity in MB) to support new clients on Oracle AS 10g and Oracle Database 10g side.
I've found AS Discoverer Sizing Calculator on oracle.com, but I can't find similar calculator for Database 10g.
Could anybody please advise how to calculate hardware sizing for Oracle Database 10g server?
Thanks a lot

Again - as the question you asked about the bandwidth - this cannot be answered without knowing the application, number of users, amount of data, etc.
I suggest you build an environment for a POC/Benchmark.
In this environment you can install your application and tweak the settings (various initialization parameters, etc) to see the impact on your system. Be sure to include enough data as most systems work well with 1 MB of test data but not with 5 GB of test data.

    Hi Dude;
Unless Oracle confirms that their product is supported on ext4, I would stay away from it. Perhaps an interesting link regarding performance: http://www.ora600.be/news/oracle-ext4-warning

  • Oracle database product feature matrix

    Hi,
1)I just went through the doc http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/039449.pdf. But it does not  mention which feature requires additional license and which one comes by deafault. Can anyone give me link of a doc which mentions whether additional license required or not for a particular feature at a particular edition?
2)*Is there any such separate doc for RAC database features?*

  • Best OS for Oracle Database Server Redhat Ent. Linux AS4 or MS Windows 2003

    hi,
if i have to choose operating system for our oracle database production server, what should i choose Linux as 4 or windows 2003. we have professional for both.
any other OS could be consider ???
    Prabhaker Kumar

    Hi Paul,
As I said above, Windows/Unix is not only the tech team choice.
Also, by estimation, nearly 60-70% of our clients have databases under Windows. I have to say that are not big databases (less than 100Gb), and traffic is not very high (till 1000 connections per days). But when the work become more intensive, and more data and security required, the databases are under Unix/Linux.
But in small business company, Unix/Linux afraid again, maybe due to the higher cost (install/maintenance server).
If my preference go for Unix/Linux, I use Oracle under Windows at my home (because I share my Pc with my wife and my daughter) and on my laptop for test, and that works well ;-)

  • Difference between Oracle Database XE and APEX?

I searched, but couldn't seem to find if this question had already been answered.
I just picked up beginning oracle application express by wrox.
I came to oracle and downloaded Oracle Database XE then went to search for apex.
Installed Oracle Database XE ..signing is as system your options appear to be administration, object browser, sql, and utilities.
unlocked the HR sample user account and logged in..it has the same options above, but also application builder.
So, I guess my question is..
    1. why does HR have application builder, but system does not?
    2. do you need to download and install Apex or is apex already preinstalled using Oracle Database XE?
    3. is Apex the same thing as application builder or are they completely different.
    Thank you for you answers
    Thomas

Oracle 11g XE is the FREE version of the Oracle database product.. APEX is the development product that LIVES in the Oracle database. So if you download the database, you get a copy of APEX to use...
System is NOT a usual user in the database, and in fact you should NOT be using it unless you need to change some settings in the database..

  • Oracle Database 11gR1 32-bit upgrade to 11gr2 64-bit

    Hello All,
My current server is having following configuration:
    OS               : RHEL 4.6 32 bit
    Product         : Oracle EBS 11i
    DB               : 11gR1
    Target machine:
    OS               : RHEL 5.8 64 bit
I want to convert my current single node EBS 11i to multi-node (two node) architecture. We have to migrate our 11gR1 over 64 bit machine.
I was trying to create create a 32 bit instance over new target server through rapid clone. But it is not supported to install 32 bit 11g over 64 bit OS, so I am now taking new path to do the same, trying to upgrade 11gR1 32 bit database directly to 11gr2 64 bit. Please suggest me appropriate procedure to perform it. Any Oracle Document over the same would be wonderful. I tried to search over Metalink but with no success.
Kindly share your experience if anyone here performed the same or similar.
    Regards
    RanjanS

You can get 11gR1 64-bit download this way:
    Previous Database Release Software
Oracle Database 10.2 and 11.1 are no longer available for download. The software is available as a media or FTP request for those customers who own a valid Oracle Database product license for any edition.
To request access to these releases, follow the instructions in Oracle Support Document 1071023.1 (Requesting Physical Shipment or Download URL for Software Media) from My Oracle Support.
NOTE: for Oracle Database 10.2, you should request 10.2.0.1 even if you want to install a later patch set. Once you install 10.2.0.1 you can then apply any 10.2 patch set. Similarly, for 11.1 request 11.1.0.6 which must be applied before installing 11.1.0.7. Patch sets can be downloaded from the Patches and Updates tab on My Oracle Support.
And about direct upgrade I have done that successfully for minor versions for example 11.1.0.6 to 11.1.0.7 so that might be possible also for 11.1. to 11.2 .

  • Oracle database and Windows Vista

When trying to install Oracle database products (9i as well as 10g), I'm politely told that there were known compatibility problems prohibiting installation of Oracle on Vista. Any known way around this? Any schedule for a Vista compatible version of Oracle?

I've sucessfully installed 10gR2 on Vista Bussines
setting the Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode on the
setup.exe file and completly disabling DEP.
Hope this helps ...great, of course this helps. My hat is off to you - I mean, setting compatibility mode for setup.exe is a essentially a no-brainer but how on earth did you manage to find out about DEP having impact on the setup. .
Can we assume that the installation works,i.e. instance up, mounted and anxiously awaits being provided with data? Listener(s) listen and talk as expected?

  • Oracle database-level permission controll

I have a Oracle 10g database user, and I want to use database-level permission controll.
Database has a User table, and i want to grouping to 3 grups. Of course, business level has the permission controll also, but I don't want this.
    Please give me advice!
    Is it a good solution?
    Thanks!

  • How should I try out Oracle Grid and Oracle database?

I want to try out Oracle Grid and Oracle database in a virtualized test environment. I have already downloaded the Oracle VM VirtualBox for Windows platform. The OS for the production environment is RHEL. So, do I just need to download Oracle Linux? How about the VM Manager, VM Server, and Oracle programs?

You can use the standard distribution media from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/downloads/index.html and https://edelivery.oracle.com/linux to install Oracle Linux and Oracle 11g in Virtualbox. Virtualbox can use real disk media as well as .iso disk image files. Oracle Linux 6 is not certified for any Oracle database product yet. Your best option will be to install Oracle Linux 5.7 and then install the Oracle-Validated software package to prepare Oracle Linux for the Oracle database installation.
Virtualbox and Oracle VM are different products. Oracle VM, including OVM server and manager installs its own operating system and is designed for installations on bare metal machines. Virtualbox is an application that requires a primary host OS, e.g. Windows, MacOSX, Linux, to install one or more virtual machines with Windows or Linux guest systems.

SQL> Disconnected from Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
    Thank you in advance

Your Database has started. It only disconnected the session that started the database. For instance, if you are using a startuo script or dbstart.
Why do you think it is not started?

  • Production environment with   Oracle Database XE.

Hello, let me know which group members using Oracle Database XE in a production environment:
    - Description of the business.
    - Type environment: (Web, intranet or desktop).
    - Programming language used.
    - Performance.
    Roberto.

We are using Oracle XE as point of sale backends.
    Overall architecture:
    - Cashier interacts with HTML GUI running in web browser in kiosk mode.
    - GUI written in PHP served locally by Apache on point of sale unit.
    - point of sale core logic is written in PL/SQL as packages in Oracle XE DB.
    - currently, DBMS_JOB runs every 5 minutes to synchronize (push sales, pull data) with inventory server. (want to change to AQs so complete transactions are pushed in real time)
    - sales reports, etc run from main Oracle Standard One Edition inventory DB.
Since each point of sale needs to run IE, Apache and Oracle XE we've found that 1GB of RAM is minimum that we can get away with and still have the system running well (cashier should never have to wait for anything; pressing any button on the GUI should react instantly even though it is IE making a local page request, Apache running a PHP module to serve the request, and calling PL/SQL to do the actual data change in the DB).
We've had XE go corrupt (strange errors, bad indexes, etc.) on us several times over the past 2 years. Fortunately in our case, we've never lost any data since sales are pushed to the main server which is backed up. Then, anything in the local XE database is expendable as we can rebuild it and pull back all information from the server. I've tried rebuilding indexes and such rather than completely rebuilding the database but have had no success (fixes for a few hours or a day but ultimately, the database continues to experience problems until the computer is rebuilt).
