The OLTP databases are oracle 8i DB with Application server 9ir2 and uses form 6i deployed on AS.

1- Oracle 10g Oracle Dataware house and store data
2- Earleir versions of oracle 8i OLAP DBs.

Which shutdown option are you using?
SHUTDOWN NORMAL is a system quiesce that waits for all sessions to log off - this can take a LONG time
SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL will wait for all transactions to complete. If you are doing a large load transaction, this can take a long time
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE will terminate all users sessions, roll back any uncommitted transactions and shutdown. If there is a long running transaction that needs to be rolled back, this can take a long time.
SHUTDOWN ABORT will crash the instance, requiring instance recovery upon startup. This will shut the database quickly.
NORMAL and TRANSACTIONAL are the cleanest options, but may take too long.
If your shutdown is taking too long, you can connect via another session, do a SHUTDOWN ABORT and then let the transactions roll back during the instance recovery on startup.

  • Oracle datawarehouse and ETL

    Hi Friends,
Iam new to Oracle dataware house and ETL,i have some some doubts please advice me.
1.i have installed oracle warehouse builder and stated trying mapping section.
Iam not using any ETL tool, without using ETL tool we can do the ETL process ???
    please advice.
    Vinu

The Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) is an ETL tool. So there's nothing that prevents you from designing ETL processes apart from, maybe, missing knowledge. With OWB and an Oracle database you've got all what you need to create mappings.

  • Incremental RMAN Backup to tape.

    Hi,
We have 2.2 TByte Oracle Dataware House. At weekends, we would like to take inceremental level 0 backup to tape and then incemental level 1 to disk daily.
So that we expect to reduce disk space for backup. We also handle the cover risk of direct path load by mains of incremental level backup.
But, I would like to know that, taking incremental level 0 to tape causes performance problems. Rman try to discover changes between the incemental level 0 on the tape and incemental level 1 on the disk.
Should we take both incremental level 0 and incremental level 1 to disk or tape?
    I need your recomendations.
    Thank you.

Thank you Satish Kandi for your reply,
As far as understand accourding to document that you refer,
if we configure well adjustment for channel of disk and tape io buffers,
and multiplexing, then we can take backup incemental level 0 to tape.
We don't want to use encryption and compression in order not to consume CPU resources.
In fact, we should try and obsorve the performance.
    Thank you.

  • Install Dataware House on SUSE linux 9.3 with Oracle Rel 2 (9.2.0.4)

    Dear All
One of my customer needs dataware house on SUSE linux and i am a core DBA working on Prod and development servers upto now. So i want to know the necessary things i need to keep in mind before going to configure datawarehouse for the customer. Can you guys please suggest me the things i need to take care?
    Any URL's PDF's
    Thanks in Advance
    Ravi

But when i don't give the oracle user all rights, it isn't possible to proceed with theinstallation
But if you give that rights then it's a security hole. According to your words I guess you have similar enviroment settings:
    ORACLE_BASE=/
    ORACLE_HOME=/<directory_name>
Why you not installing on deeper directory such as /opt or some your own directory? For example
    ORACLE_BASE=/myoracledir
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/<directory_name>
    Then chown -R oracle:dba /myoracledir.
Then oracle will be owner just for /myoracle directory and all its subdirectories.
i just could look at the error details, but they didn't described the erroranyway.
That's not so true. Error log you could find in /tmp/OraInstallYYYY-MM-DD_HH_MI_SS..

  • Dataware house with Oracle or distributed computing

    Hi All,
When I talked with some guys in some big companies on the DW (ETL especially), all of them said they love distributing computing with Hadoop or Hive much more than Oracle.
When they have huge data per day for processing (say n TB), Oracle or rational database can't work very well.
I just have one DW project experience, which was implemented with PL/SQL and Shell purely and works well, at least from my point of view.
    What's your opinion on this?
    Thank you very much,
    Leon

    Hi Leon,
look at this page (it contains link to two publications with results of comparison Hadoop against 2 RDBMS)
    http://database.cs.brown.edu/projects/mapreduce-vs-dbms/
It seems Hadoop currently has no any chance against RDBMS (in DWH area)...
In my opnion, Hadoop/Hive is a technology and not a solution, to solve problem with Hadoop/Hive you will need to do a lot of work.
    Regards,
    Oleg

  • Oracle BI Master Detail RPT

    Financials modules
Below is the report format and Example,
    Account GRP1(1-4 BU) GRP(5,4) GRP(6-11) TTL GL_ITL DELTA
    10121 $92 * 2 90 100 10
BU's are Business Units, Here Company i think,
Description: First column is account number, example is GRP1,BU,Account,Dept,Fiscal period
Account number is at master Level. When i click account number 10121, it should drill down to all the details or child which it makes 92 dollers.
Basically master detail report. But the format should be like this
The question is whether our datware house pre built is supported to do this type of report or we need to custom some thing from the dataware house.
What more information, i need to ask if i need more information from the client

The name of this forum is "Database - General"
The first line of your question indicates your question has nothing to do with the Oracle database.

  • Regarding OBIEE Integration With Oracle EBS

    Hi All,
I have installed BIAPPS (7.9.6.1) (components installed are 2 11g DBs (one is OLTP and other is OLAP) on RHEL 4, Oracle Application Server 10g, Informatica Power Center , DAC and OBIEE). After that i need to integrate the OBIEE with Oracle EBS. I have installed 11.5.10.2. I upgraded the database to 10g R2 and applied patch ATG 6 (Pre reqs of Integration).
Steps Which i have done for integration:-
I installed Financial module in Biapps. Made changes to that pre built rpd ie:OracleBIAnalyticsApps.rpd using Administrations tool. I have created datasource for EBS and given in connection pool. Similarly in dataware house connection pool also. When i test from Administration tool means Init Block > EBS Security context > Edit datasource. When i click on test the datasource i am getting error NQ_SESSION.ICX_SESSION_COOKIE* has no value definition.*
I copied that rpd linux box where my OBIEE server resides and changed the rpd name in NQSConfig.INI. I added the oracle_home and tnsadmin etc in user.sh file. I added the dsn names which i created the same in windows in odbc.ini file. But NQServer.log says
*[nQSError: 43059] Init block 'LAST_SYND_DS_YTD_QTD': Dynamic refresh of repository scope variables has failed.*
*[nQSError: 17001] Oracle Error code: 12154, message: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified*
    at OCI call OCIServerAttach.
*[nQSError: 17014] Could not connect to Oracle database.*
Please let me know any solution for this.
    Thanks,
    Manikandan

    hi Manikandan,
Please check the tns entries for the connection pool that u assigned for LAST_SYND_DS_YTD_QTD

  • Oracle 9i Or 10G Certification

    Hi,
I am a Associate Software QA Engineer who is doing QA in
DataWare housing tool. I get the exposure to Oracle8i,9i,10g. But it is not extensive DBA exposure, It is more of testers exposure. But I like to move in to DBA track. Which certification path should I choose. I have already studied for SQL exam paper (Oracle9i). But ,since Oracle 10G is around the corner, I am Confused what to choose ? Please give your advice.
    Yours,
    Rasika Karunathilaka

If you want to save money, there is a work around. The class for example will cost at least $1500 if you are in the United States. You may want to get certified in Oracle 8i (5 exams) and go on an upgrade path to 9i(1 exam) and 10g (1 exam). A total of 7 exams will cost you $875 in the United States. If you want to get certified in 9i and then take the upgrade path to 10g it will cost you $500 + $1500 + $125 = $2125 in the United States. Note that Oracle is retiring 8i exams at the end of this year.

  • Oracle Advance Compression

    Hi All,
I am new to Oracle. I need to implement Oracle Advance compression in my dataware house database.
My DB version is 11.1.0.7.0 I applied the latest patchset updates to include the patches that are needed for Oracle Advance compression.
My doubt is , Is it necessary to shut down the database before enabling the table compression and index rebuilding?
    please clarify me.
    Thanks
    VBK

No you will not need to bounce the database.
However to get the compression on existing data you will need to reload the table and/or table partition.

  • When to choose oracle

    Hi
I don’t know whether I can start this thread in this forum, but nevertheless I think I can get a better clarity from the experts, when I was googling to know the advantages of oracle over teradata and vice versa, I happened to see some articles, but most of them were written by peoples Who are biased with their own technology, I couldn’t get a fair idea , so it would be helpful for me if anyone could share their experience who had seen both the positives and negatives of both these database .
    My questions are.
1.when to choose oracle and when to choose teradata
2.What are the major architectural differences between oracle and teradata, that makes one better than the other

You might find this article interesting,
Teradata and Oracle Partner for Enterprise Analytics
    http://www.dashboardinsight.com/news/teradata-and-oracle-partner-for-enterprise-analytics.aspx
Well since you have read both sides of the story you can make your own judgement based on the articles. I suppose these articles from both sides will lists the pros/cons compare to their competitor and vice versa. You can gather these pros/cons and compose your own list and make smart decision.
Not knowing much about the technology of Teradata, my comments here is again biased. As the name suggested, TeraData has some strength on DataWare house territory, on most other parts I believe Oracle has an edge. Don't forget Oracle has survived fiercy competition from Sybase and Informix and dominate the market for over a decade.
