Oracle DB : UNDO tablespace filled 99%

Hi,
That's not a problem (I hope) but just a question on Livecycle ES DataBase.
The Undo tablespace set to 4Gb, always filled 99%.
Is it normal ? is there preconized size for it ? Does we have to maintain it ...
The LiveCycle configuration is :
ES (1) version 8.2.1 SP3, Jboss
Oracle 10g
The server is running on Windows Server 2003 Ent OS.

It very much depends on the tool used to determine the usage of the UNDO tablespace. Many tools do not take into account that the UNDO tablespace and the TEMP tablespace may seem to be full (have correctly formatted blocks) while still having a lot of functional space available inside of those blocks.
In other words, if the tool calculates the usage in the same way as data tablespaces, it will be reporting the wrong value. Ideally, the UNDO tablespace will always be close to 100% full using traditional calculation.
Assuming the tool is doing it's calculation correctly, the second thing to note is that UNDO is the core to Oracle Consistent Read mechanism. (Which is, in turn, the core to many of the Flashback techniques.) The UNDO data, which is created at transaction time, must be available after the transaction has committed if a consistent read or flashback is invoked. The more UNDO, the further back in 'time' you can flash back.
So the correct way to tune the UNDO is to specify the amount of time you require UNDO to exist. And you verify that using the DBA_UNDO_EXTENTS view and the STATUS column. Totally free space in the undo occurs when the STATUS is EXPIRED. If you have no EXPIRED extents, they can not be reused (except in a pinch) and the system will allocate more space to the UNDO tablespace if possible.

    Hi,
    From what I have read about undo Tablespaces ,If Undo Management is AUTO,and Retention is se to say 15 min and retention gurantee is disabled ,Unexpired transactions can be overwritten by the database,If such is the case then undo tablespace should never get filled up.
    But I have observed despite these settings,Undo tablespace filling issue still occurs.
    Please help me understand this.

    OR
    2. Oracle is using autotuneundo which causes it to retain Undo for longer than undo_retention period and use the undo tablespace datafile to the fullest.

    Redologs files are filles with COMMITED AND UNCOMMTTED transactions and archived assume archive log
    ORacle uses undo tablespace to rollback the uncommited transactions
    What happens if we loose undo tablespace?
    sunday i took full backup...
    after eactly one menoth i take another full backup meant time somewhere in the middle of the month i database crashes and also undo tablespace lost

    In your sceniario, you have a Big problem here. Without a proper backup of your undo tablespace, you are going to suffer data loss if there're active undo segments.

    Rollback Segment Needs Recovery
    You need to drop all objects to release active undo segments.
    There's a work around floating around like list all corrupted rollback segment in undocumented initial parameter
    *._corrupt_rollback_segments=”_SYSSMU29$” I won't recommended this method , because it didn't fix the problem. It validated uncommited data.

    I am running on 10gr2 oracle database in a Linux 32 bit environment.
    I have a corrupted undo datafile. I've been able to recover the datafile but still the alert logs is still showing that it is corrupted.
    Now what I'm trying to do is to drop the old undo tablespace like the one discussed here Change undo tablespace in Oracle - Switch Oracle's Undo tablespace.
    My problem is I have an Active extent but no active session corresponding to it:

    Yes i was able to recover the datafile but the alert_log kept on prompting that it is still corrupted. The datafile's status is online.
    I want to kill the session/s contributing to the PENDING OFFLINE status of the rollback segment so I can already drop the undotablespace and so
    that the alert log will stop prompting for that corrupted datafile in that UNDOTABLESPACE.
    Can i Just alter the tablespace's datafiles to offline drop then just drop it. Then I drop the tablespace?

  • Is there so call "dedicated" UNDO tablespace in Oracle 9i and higher?

    Since one of our applicaions needs to process large amounts of data, we have been using a dedicated rollback segment in order to avoid the "snapshot too old" problem.
    Recently our DB upgraded to Oracle 9i and DBA asked us to use "undo" tablespace.
    Based the Oracle 9i Doc., it only allows to select ONE undo tablespace at a time.
    If so, DBA has to make the only UNDO as large as our Cash large transactions
    need(adjust the UNDO_RENTION), which inevitably waste lots of space.
    Does Oracle 9i allow to have one dedicated UNDO tablespace for large transactions while another one for regular transactions just like we use the old rollback segments.

    Why have multiple UNDO tablespaces? You can only use one at a time, and when the other one is not being used, it still consumes storage space.
    Spend a little time determining how much undo you need and size undo tablespace and undo retention around those values and you should be able to resolve the problems you are experiencing now.

  • Error Oracle Mobile ORA-30023 Duplicate undo tablespace specification

    Hi,
    I have the following mobile application (Oracle Mobile 10g R3):
    - Win32 (Forms 6i) App.
    - snapshots (12 updateable, 36 read-only)
    I have a successfully compilation of my form connected to the mobile database. However when I put a value over a textitem, my WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM trigger send me an error:
    ORA-30023 Duplicate undo tablespace specification
    How can I solve this???, It seems like there is a parameter that I have to change.
    The WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM trigger only has a basic select over a "readonly" table.
    Please help.

    I think the problem is the following,
    I need to convert a date to julian format, example:
    to_char(sysdate,'j')
    The problem is that it seems like Oracle Mobile connot support this kind format convertion.
    So, How can I get the number of days between 01-jan-4712 BC and other date????
    I found this function TO_DATE('-4712-01-01', 'SYYYY-MM-DD'), but it doesn´t works on Oracle Mobile.
    If someone have any idea about how can I get the number of days between 01-jan-4712 BC and other day without using the format 'SYYYY'......please help

  • UNDO Tablespace is used to fill frequently

    Hi Experts,
    We have an issue with the UNDO tablespace frequently,where we dont see the space occupied for any active transactions and i can see only for "Retained for Use by Queries or Flashback" i.e. more than 2000M.
    Can any one let me know how to purge this space and to free up the undo tablespace.

    OS :SUN OS
    Undo Retention : 30 Mins.

    Hi,
    I think your undo tablespace contains data for inactice transactions and this is mainly because of higher value of undo_retention parameter.
    This space will be overwritten automatically as and when the space will be required by the current transaction.

    one is default undo tablespace, another is created manually
    will it use it when the default one is full?

    You can have two Undo Tablespaces created with the CREATE UNDO TABLESPACE syntax.
    However, the current database instance will use the Undo Tablespace specified by the instance level parameter undo_tablespace.
    When you want to switch the datafiles of an undo tablespace from, say, one mount point to another (or when you want to "resize" an undo tablespace that has grown very large for specific one-off / adhoc jobs), you would create another undo tablespace, reset the instance level parameter to the new undo tablespace and wait for a decent interval (e.g. at least undo_retention or autotuned undo retention) before dropping the old undo tablespace.
    So yours is not a hypothetical question. Having two undo tablespaces is a real-world practice -- but the two are concurrently present for only a short duration, while transactions and queries switch from one to the other.
    (In RAC, each database instance must have it's own Undo tablespace as well).

    I am using 10.2.0.3.0 on Oracle Solaris 5.10.
    I have an undo tablespace 'UNDOTBS1' which has 5 data files of sizes 60GB. Here are my undo parameters:

    undo_tablespace                      string      UNDOTBS1I have a long running batch process, which is inserting billions of records in the table and generating lots of undo. The batch is running for the last two days, and generating lots of undo and developer says that he is committing after 3 million records, though he was told to commit after 10000 records. Now all the data files of undo tablespace have become full except one, which is also getting filled up.
    I see from dba_rollback_segs that there are some 25 segments which are showing status offline.
    does it mean that the oracle will reuse those segments and I dont need to add another data file to the undo tablespace?
    How would I know during this running process, that oracle would reuse space in undo tablespace, or will just throw an error, after exhausting all the data files.

    As the undo segments are used in a curcular fashion, dba_free_space may not give correct picture. use following sql.

    Here ACTIVE - they are being used
    UNEXPIRED - they will not be released until the undo_retention time. But if all other extents are used, then oracle may reallocate unexpired blocks and any session which is trying to read from unexpired block may received "snapshot too old error".
    EXPIRED - here these blocks will be reused, you can consider them as free.

  • Dropping Undo Tablespace

    Hi,
    I am running Oracle 9.2 on Solaris. I have Automatic undo management turned on and have a Undo tablespace by name UNDOTBS. It has a single datafile and has AUTOEXTEND feature turned on. My UNDO_RETENTION was set to 4 hours.
    Presently, the size of UNDOTBS has grown to around 40G and has filled up the file system in which it resides. I need to clean up the file system. In order to do this, I followed the below procedure.
    SQL> create undo tablespace UNDOTBS1 datafile '/u04/oradata/proddb/undo_00.dbf' size 1024M autoextend off;
    SQ> alter system set undo_tablespace=undotbs1 scope=both;
    SQL> alter system set undo_retention=3600 scope=both;
    Now, i checked the alert log and it is offlining all the UNDO segments of the first undo tablespace UNDOTBS. It is taking time and has been more than 1.5 hours. I have a couple of questions here,
    1. As i have issued "alter system undo_tablespace=undotbs1 scope=both", all the new transactions will use the new UNDOTBS1. No new transactions will be using the first undo tablespace UNDOTBS right?
    2. Since, i have issued "alter system undo_retention=3600 scope=both", all the transactions in first undo tablespace UNDOTBS will be rolled back after 2 hours, no matter if it is commited or not. After this period, i am safe to drop the first undo tablespace using "drop tablespace UNDOTBS including contents and datafiles;". Did i get it right?
    Any information will be of a great help.

    Thank you all for the replies. It has been two days since i switched the undo_tablespace to use the new tablespace(undotbs1) but my alert log is still being flooded with " Undo tablespace 1 moved to pending switch out state". I tried the following to see if there are any rows returne from the above query and it did 3 rows, showing some undo segments with the following output

  • Undo tablespace grew 15GB +

    Hi Guys,
    During one of the processes my UNDO tablespace grew to 15GB(reached it's limit) and it keeps growing. I have made the size to 20GB and it going to fill that too. Can someone suggest a way to fix this issue? Can I create a new TS and drop the old one something like this:
    CREATE SMALLFILE UNDO TABLESPACE "UNDOTBS2" DATAFILE 'D:\ORACLE\ORADATA\NGS1\UNDOTBS02.DBF' SIZE 200M REUSE
    alter system set undo_tablespace = undotbs2
    DROP TABLESPACE UNDOTBS1
    If I drop the old UNDO tablespace do I have to follow some prerequisite for example set undo_retention=0 etc. Please let me know.

    Hello,
    Even if the transaction is commited the Undo Tablespace can keep Undo records ( you have the
    parameter undo_retention ).
    When you create a new Undo tablespace then, you have to switch the database to it by
    using the parameter undo_tablespace.
    This is a dynamic parameter but, I use to restart the database so as to be sure that the old
    undo tablespace is not used anymore. So that I can drop it.
    Of course the database should be shutdown cleanly so that there's no transaction to rollback when
    you start it up.

  • Unable to extend segment by 8 in undo tablespace 'UNDOTBS1' error ?

    I have added a new column to one of my tables,and I am migrating data to fill all the existing rows for this newly added column; but while executing the migration script I get the following error -
    Error:ORA-30036: unable to extend segment by 8 in undo tablespace 'UNDOTBS1'
    Of whatever i searched on the net this error points to lack of space for the undo segment of oracle. is it possible to extend this space dynamically?
    Any pointers to help me resolve the problem would be appreciated.

    Actually, that is the case too. I have a one large commit at the end. To avoid this and introduce commits at some decent regular intervals, i will have to modify my script. I am trying to see if there is any other configuration solution possible :)

    Error is because in target database undo tablespace is UNDOTBS_NEW and in auxiliary database undo tablespace name in init file is UNDOTBS. I followed the meatlink doc 433992.1 which suggest following steps to recover from above error:
    1) edit the parameter UNDO_MANAGEMENT to "MANUAL"
    2) start database again
    3) drop the UNDO tablespace
    4) recreate UNDO tablespace which matches to name in init file.
    5) shutdown & start DB again.
    Now, i edited init file and tried to start DB and got following error:

    This is a testing database. And my database is online and open. But i can free the external usb disk that contains my ols undotbs.
    I want to drop old undo tablespace but this is not possible.
    1.- In order to open my database i had my datafile( '/mnt/hdext/back_plelds/undotbs02.dbf') offline drop, and then i can to open my database.
    2.- When i try to delete my old undo tablespace im getting this error:
    SQL> drop tablespace undotbs1 including contents and datafiles;
    drop tablespace undotbs1 including contents and datafiles
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01548: active rollback segment '_SYSSMU1$' found, terminate dropping
    tablespace
    3.- My default undo_tablespace is another that i was created before step 1.
    SQL> sho parameter undo_ta
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    undo_tablespace string UNDOTMP
    SQL>
    Well i search in metalink ORA-01548 code error and in 18947.1 doc whows me that the solution is:
    Action: Shut down instances that use the active rollback segments in the
    tablespace and then drop the tablespace.
    4.- I try to shutdown but im getting:
    SQL> shutdown immediate;
    ORA-00376: file 10 cannot be read at this time
    ORA-01110: data file 10: '/mnt/hdext/back_plelds/undotbs02.dbf'
    SQL>
    This /mnt/hdext is an external USB disk and i have all permissions. I exported tables without any problem and i can read all files.
    i search un metalink again ora codes (ORA-00376 ORA-01110) and the doc id: 427801.1 shows in the solution:
    Drop the old undo tablespace instead of making it offline.
    but when i try to drop the tablespace it shows the error describe in the step 2.
    Facts:
    - my tablespace UNDOTBS1 is ONLINE. I put in offline and this is not the solution.
    - This is the status of my rollback segments:

    - I have the note (Unable to drop und tablespace In this article describe the problem but this is not the same. The difference is that i cannot drop the rollback segment that describe in step 2.
    SQL> drop rollback segment "_SYSSMU1$";

    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-30025: DROP segment '_SYSSMU1$' (in undo tablespace) not allowed
    in metalink the doc id: 173696.1 shows the solution:
    Action:     Check the undo segment name and reissue statement if necessary.
    i cannot drop the rollback_segment
    What can i do ???

    in step 4 did you try with shutdown abort?

  • Cannot drop undo tablespace

    Hello:
    I've created a new undo tablespace undotbs2. I've set it to the default undo tablespace. When I've tried to drop the old one, I get the following error:
    SQL> conn / as sysdba
    Connected.
    SQL> DROP TABLESPACE undotbs1 INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES;
    DROP TABLESPACE undotbs1 INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES
    ERROR at line 1: ORA-01548: active rollback segment '_SYSSMU7$' found, terminate dropping tablespace
    This is a production database. The service is down because the partition with the Oracle tablespaces: system, undo, temp, etc is full.
    After shutting down the database the problem persist: I cannot drop the old undo tablespace because of the same error.
    I've followed the note 1321093.1. Here the query results:

    As you can see, there is no pending transactions. No application is connected to the database (service is down), however the database is appling rollbacks since 2 days.
