    "with learning of sql and shell scripting"
    Ah, very good move, so you must pick my tool, it is all about managing Oracle DB through Korn shell http://www.smenu.org.
    As of your question, the answer is in your mood and preference.
    Oracle DBA: Definitely more money, less opportunity. the job is dwindling somehow due to Grid automation and budget restriction.
    It is not that you don't need DBA, but manager thinks they can do without and don't (try) replace them. Pressure on DBA is a myth: more work = more money = happy DBA until wife run away.
    Developer : Definitely less money, not necessary more opportunity unless you have java EE. no shift but more pressure: Projects are always in late, usually in the development area, not in the infrastructure.
    One funny thing I noticed during these last 15 years, is that DBA have usually more children than others people (unix sys admin or Dev). Probably related to better earning.
    DBA can be boring or passionate depending on your own knowledge, most of others DBA I know are still in the job, only one is now JAVA EE guy.

    What real problem are you trying to solve?  No, view a table using shell scripting is not a problem to be solved, it is a technique, and probably not the best technique for your unknown problem.

    I am an Oracle dba with more than 4 years or experience. I am interested in moving towards being Oracle application dba. can anyone sugest books/course/tranning/web site that will help me.

    There's not a whole lot out there book/web wise that I have ever
    found. I'm preparing to enter the same roll as well. There are
    11i admin classes that you can take, along with things like
    flexfields, workflow, etc that would also help. Good luck.

  • Advantages of using Oracle with Unix over Windows server

    Hi there,
    I want some article/document which depicts the advantages of using Oracle with Unix (say HP-UX or Solaris backend). Actually the plan is to use some Data Warehousing applications using Cognos Poweplay, ReportNet and either Decision Stream of Cognos or Oracle Warehouse builder may be used as ETL tool. For Data mining applications we are planning to use SPSS Clementine. The Data volume will be substantial one. At present we are developing some prototype in Windows 2003 advanced environment. We are plaiing to use Risc server and RAID-5. Pl. advice some ideal architecture for us, as you know, it's typically a Govt. level application data (mostly archival data). The reports will be published using Report Net, Adhoc query etc, OLAP analysis will be done using Powerplay.

  • Can a dotnet application talk with unix os using Oracle SOA Suit?

    how can a dotnet application talk with unix operating system using Oracle SOA Suite? I have to automate a process on unix server like create user through dotnet application.. is it possible?
    My dotnet application is used for creating users, granting access on the servers. Some servers are 21C servers and some are legacy servers. In this dotnet application a user make certain request for the rights on those servers e.g. create user, give access rights, change password. This application is treated as user interface and maintaining tool of all this information and later on the basis of that request it generates the job-sheet. This job sheet is forwarded to responsible engineer who further provisions the request manually by going to that specific server in the request. So I want to automate this process that when user put any access or create user request then the moment he puts the request, that request should be provisioned without any human intervention i.e. automatically users must be created or password must be changed. I believe you will get an enough idea about my problem from all above information. So please help me.

  • How to trace which user shutdown oracle database in unix OS?

    our organization is having 10 DBA with sysdba priviladge. We are using UNIX operating system. At morning say for example if some one (SYSDBA user) shutdown the oracle database how other sysdba user trace the user who shutdown the database? the information i need is terminal from where oracle got shutdown and the username? Please help...

    Hello,
    You are right Sybrand, SYSDBA connections are always audited.
    My answer was about enabling auditing to any connections, which may give informations about who access to the Database in general. And, this is true, it was not the scope of the OP question.
    However, so as to enlarge audit of SYS/SYSDBA/SYSOPER operations, setting the parameter audit_sys_operations=TRUE may be interesting:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e16543/auditing.htm#DBSEG0611
    To the OP:
    Where the audit tracefile get genareted for sys user?You may execute this:
    show parameter audit_file_destThank again Sybrand for correcting me.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

  • Change the SYS & SYSTEM Oracle passwords with BRTOOLS, any concerns ?

    Hello, I would like to change both the SYS and SYSTEM Oracle passwords with BRTOOLS :
    (1) Can I use BRTOOLS to change them, or, I have to change them through SQLPlus ?
    (2) Any concerns, will this password change affect my SAP normal operations ?
    (3) Do I need to re-start the whole SAP UNIX system when I complete the password changing ?
    (4) Or changing these 2 passwords is totally an Oracle RDBMS issue, it will not have any effect on SAP ?

    But I failed. I was going to change the password of SYSTEM, but why SAP asked me to enter the password of SAPDEV ?
    Why ? OK, then I entered the SAPDEV password (it is the same as SYSTEM's old password).
    Then, I called SQLPlus and entered login name : SYSTEM, but why its correct password was still the old one, the new one failed. Why ?
    I just wanted to change the password of SYSTEM, why it was related to SAPDEV ?

  • Problem when trying to refresh oracle screens with latest data

    hello experts,
    i have one problem,i want to refresh the oracle screen with the latest data from the data
    base.
    It is a two stage process.At first step one user will select a row from the screen and then he will press a button .
    now the second screen will appear and the detail of the employee will be displayed.
    First step has been completed and the data is coming in the second form via parameters and i can see the full information of the employee.
    Now i want to refresh the oracle form i.e. suppose if my dba has made any changes in the oracle table( EMP table) i want that after pressing the refresh button user can see the
    latest data from the database.
    in WHEN_BUTTON_PRESSED trigger i have written this codes.
    enter_query;
    execute_query;
    but they are not giving the expected result.
    And one more thing please suggest whether in the second form i should use database item
    or non database item.
    When i am using database item when i am trying to close second from one pop up is appearing
    and asking that whether i want to save the changes.
    please suggest how can i remove this message from my application.
    Regards
    Anutosh

    Hi,
    what data did you transfer via parameters to the second form ?
    how did you populate the datablock in the second form ?
    Typical solution would be:
    (For my example the block is both forms is named EMP, and is based on the table SCOTT.EMP)
    In Form 1, transfer the primary key-value of the current record to a global or parameter (will use global in my example):
    e.g. you have a WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED-Trigger with the following code:
    <pre>
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=:EMP.EMPNO;
    CALL_FORM('FORM2');
    </pre>
    In Form 2, you have a WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE-Trigger with code:
    <pre>
    DEFAULT_VALUE('GLOBAL.EMPNO', NULL);
    IF :GLOBAL.EMPNO IS NOT NULL THEN
    GO_BLOCK('EMP');
    EXECUTE_QUERY;
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=NULL;
    END IF;
    </pre>
    On block EMP in Form 2 there is a PRE-QUERY-Trigger with following code:
    <pre>
    IF :GLOBAL.EMPNO IS NOT NULL THEN
    :EMP.EMPNO:=:GLOBAL.EMPNO;
    END IF;
    </pre>
    And at last, in your refresh-button would be the following code:
    <pre>
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=:EMP.EMPNO;
    GO_BLOCK('EMP');
    EXECUTE_QUERY;
    :GLOBAL.EMPNO:=NULL;
    </pre>
    Hope this helps

  • Can not insert a row to a table from Oracle DBA Studio

    Hi,
    I try to use the Oracle DBA Studio to create a table and put some test data in it. Here is what I found:
    I start Oracle DBA Studio on the client machine by connecting to an Oracle server 8i (8.1.7). I create a simple table called Test with two columns: one is USER, VARCHAR2, 10; and the other is USER2, CHAR, 2. After that, I right click on the table name and select "Table Data Editor" from the popup menu. The table editor window shows up. I type in the value 'AA' and 'BB' in the grid of two columns. Then I click the Apply button. An error message box popped up:
    ORA-00928 missing SELECT keyword.
    I click Show SQL button. The SQL statement is as following:
    INSERT INTO "TASYS"."TEST" (USER ,USER2 ) VALUES ('AA' ,'BB').
    I copy the statement to SQL Plus and run it. The same error is generated. But if I remove (USER, USER2) from the statement, it inserts a row without complaint. In other word, the database will not allow to insert if individual columns are list. I realize something must wrong with the new server and client installed and could not figure out what happening. Hope someone can help.
    Thanks.
    null

    I am not sure, but could it be that USER is a keyword or predefine word. Check Oracle'slist of predefine/keyword
