Oracle Developer in the Marketplace

How do the Oracle internet development tools, especially Forms 6i, rate in the marketplace? We know that the database is rated first, but can you attract high quality developers if you want to use only Oracle development tools. How do they compare to others in the marketplace? What examples are there of companies that have been successful at developing internet applications using Oracle Forms and any of the other Oracle development tools and/or services like Forms Server? If you choose to put all your eggs in the Oracle basket, will you be in a good situation in the years ahead?
Thanks,
Joe

Everyone agrees( except Microsoft) that Oracle RDBMS is the best database but when it comes to developing Internet Applications then Oracle Forms may not be the best.
In my experience Oracle Forms/Reports is the best RAD tool for client/server application development. But when it comes to Internet Applications (E-Commerce - BtoC) then one should look at Java based applications (JDeveloper,JBuilder) as the development tool and technology.
Oracle forms can be used to build Intranet Applciations or BtoB Internet Applciation where u have Controlled Users.
So if u want a commercial application to run within an oraganisation ( Intranet) then u can use Oracle Forms/Reports and deploy it on
the Web Server( Oracle Internet Application Server, Forms Server,Reports Server). This works very well.
So broadly we can say: Java is for E-commerce applications and Oracle Forms is for internal commercial applications(Intranet).
We have invested time and knowlege in Oracle Forms/Reports and can't throw it away.

    System Information:
Oracle XE on windows XP. Everything is running on the same machine, sqlplus, Oracle Developer and the database are all on the same machine.
If you need any more information please let me know, and how to get the information you want. I am not a DBA so I don't know how to do a lot of things with oracle, but I do know that this SQL should be working.

    NLS...read up on them
on the same machine, yeah and...?
    (1) c:\> set NLS_LANG=.....
    (2) c:\> sqlplus
-- sqlplus has the active nls settings set from (1)
    3) you now connect to a database
    - this database has an NLS character settings that where set during using a spfile or pfile
    - or, as in the case of the characterset, was defined and set once, during the creation of the database.
    So...
Your NLS settings in (1) can be different from the ones that are active in the database (3).
Your NLS settings are / can be set on windows on 5 levels
    In the registry under /software/oracle:
    1) on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    2) on HKEY LOCAL USER
In the envionment settings from windows under control panel, system, advanced, environment settings:
    3) on system level
    4) on user level
    5) On command level via explicitly setting the parameter before starting the actual program
So in all, you can have the case where the NLS settings from sqlplus or Oracle Developer or the database are all different.

  • Calling Oracle Developer Report from JDeveloper

I am using Orale JDeveloper 10.1.2. I can't seem to find a way of producing reports. I read that Oracle Reports developer can be integrated with Jdeveloper. How can I do this? I want to be able to generate reports from Jdeveloper.
    Thanks.

If you want the Reports integration inside JDeveloper - you need to install the Oracle Developer Suite - the JDeveloper version that comes there has the reports integration.

  • Oracle Developer

Hi. I have a Oracle Applications Vision Instance. I tried navigating to Configurator Repository/Workbench HTML pages in Configurator Developer/Administrator responsibility and but couldn't find it Where can I find Oracle Configurator Developer HTML homepage?
What is the menu/function setting to access Oracle Developer?

The problem is likely with the responsibility that you are using. In many cases, you will see two responsibilities:
    Configurator Administrator (menu = Configurator)
Oracle Configurator Administrator (menu = CzDevMainMenu)
You want to use "Oracle Configurator Administrator" if you are accessing the HTML Configurator Developer Application.
The "Configurator Administrator" responsibility was used prior to the introduction of the HTML interface (11.5.9 and earlier). This responsibility only provides access to various concurrent programs for setting up the remote servers, importing/refreshing models and publishing models. It will not provide access to the HTML Configurator Developer application.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • How do I use the Oracle Developer Reporting Control in Visual Basic 6.0?

I was wondering how to use the Oracle Developer Reporting Control componant in Visual Basic 6.0 to generate reports in Oracle Reports? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Rohit,
Would like to ask you some questions about the oracle report with Visual Basic.
    1. I have a report built in oracle report. Currently there is a Visual Basic program want to pass some parameter to this report. Can Visual Basic program pass the parameter to this oracel report?
    2. Based on yr answer, do i have to installed the oracle report? or just copy and register the Rwsxa60.ocx (i'm using oracle report 6i) in the PC? So can i use this activeX control.
    3. Is this activeX control similar to Crystal report object which can found in VB?
    4. Is there an example/guide on how the Visual Basic pass the parameter to oracel form?
Your answer will be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Using Oracle Developer Suite 10g with the 10g Express Edition Database

I'm new to Oracle and I'm taking an SQL college level course using a text book entitled "Guide to Oracle 10g". Our text book came with Oracle Developer Suite 10g (9.0.4.0.1) but no database. We adopted the 10g Express Edition (XE) as the database. I have both the database and the Developer Suite loaded on Windows XP Pro. I've been using the database for months now and it runs fine and the Developer Suite installed OK.
However, I would like to use some of the Developer Suite apps (for learning purposes) with the database but I can't seem to log on to the database through the Developer apps when I open them and use my 10g XE database user-name and password. For starters, I would like to see if I could use the edition of SQLPlus (release 9.0.1.4.0) that comes with the Developer Suite because it has configuration options that are not available in the SQLPlus command line version that 10g XE contains (which otherwise works fine).
When I open SQLPlus (Developer Suite Version) and try to log on with my database user name and password (and no host string), I get the error:
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
I did search the discussion forum first and also reviewed some Oracle pdf's including the concepts pdf but came up empty. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to succeed or a determination of the compatibility of 10g XE with the Developer Suite. Thanks kindly.

I think your last idea might be helpful at this point and in case it matters, they are both installed on a sinlge machine (laptop). Thanks in advance:

  • Using Oracle Developer Suite 10g Without the Oracle Database

I have never used Oracle, but have used MS SQL Server 7. I need to learn Forms. An Oracle salesperson suggested I download Oracle Developer Suite 10g (the demo product). It includes the Oracle Developer Suite (with Forms Developer), and many other programs.
The salesperson said it includes a database server, but I suspect it does not. I only downloaded the package last night, and have begun to skim the documentation, but I see nothing that looks like a database server.
In SQL Server 7, the database engine is run as a service and you create and manage your tables (do all the database admin stuff) using SQL Enterprise Manager.
So, does this package include a database engine/server? Or must you also have the Oracle Database?
I don't see a demo version of the Oracle Database - is there one?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi,
The Developer Suite does not contain a demo version of the Oracle Database.
You can download the database from this page:

I tried to use various way to download the disk1. I always got the same file and have the same problem.
About disk2, it is fine. I am just wondering if others have a chance to meet the same situation? Or oracle is putting an wrong file for our download.
Your warm hands will be appreciated.

This download has been up for some time so I don't think it is a problem with the file itself. We recommend a download manager for anybody having issues transferring large files.

  • Need the Oracle Developer Suite 10.1.2.3 for Windows XP & Windows 7

    Hi All,
Need the Oracle Developer Suite 10.1.2.3 for Windows XP & Windows 7 for developing Custom Forms and Reports to be used in R12.1.3. Please provide a link from where I can down the same.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Kiran Panditi.

The base release is available here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/forms/downloads/index.html
In order to get to 10.1.2.3, you must then install Patch ID 5983622
Installation on Windows 7 is only supported for Win7 (32bit) and requires special installation instructions found in MOS Note 1292919.1 . Not following these instructions will result in failure to install the product properly.

  • Installing oracle developer suite under a different oracle home than the DB

    I have Oracle 10g r2 installed on a RHAS4 server.
I installed Oracle developer suite 10.1 on this server. In the installation procedures, there are specific instructions to not install it under the ORACLE_HOME for an existing database installation.
Oracle was already installed under /usr/lib/oracle (don't ask me why, I didn't do it).
I installed oracle developer suite under /oracle/dev. If I set ORACLE_HOME to /usr/lib/oracle, proc responds with:
Symbol `kpccapCTarr' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
PCC-F-NOERRFILE, unable to open error message file, facility PR2
If I set ORACLE_HOME to /oracle/dev, it works correctly.
This appears to require me to switch my oracle home setting each time I switch between using Pro*C and sqlplus. This in very inconvenient. I have worked on many, many systems in the past which had one ORACLE_HOME for both the RDBMS and the development tools.
Is this a new constraint introduced by Oracle? Where does this restriction come from?
Is there something I don't understand and have I installed the developer suite incorrectly?

your 10.2 server uses obviously some different client libraries than your 10,1 developer version.
You may check this with ldd proc and ldd sqlplus.
Perhaps you can live with a wrapper script for starting sqlplus or proc meanwhile ?

  • Run or display the output in Oracle developer form runtime web

    Hi guys,
I have installed oracle forms10g in windows 7. im using firefox v.2. when i run the form, the Oracle developer form runtime web is not opening. the output is display in the mozilla firefox itself.
but how to run or display the output in Oracle developer form runtime web?
    Thanks in advance

What's the problem? What do you mean with the form, the Oracle developer form runtime web is not opening and the output is display in the mozilla firefox itself?
Is the Form open or not? If you see you form, where ever, then the "runtime" is running!
Is it displays within the browser window? But you expected it in an own window?
If that's the case you have to set separateFrame = TRUE in fomsweb.cfg.
