Oracle Export/Dump Requirements

I have a client who wants to extract or dump their 9TB database (a selective backup) and then get it restored onto a suppliers environment for further processing.
If a dump/export/backup is done, does the supplier need to have identical version of Oracle?
Out of the methods, what are the benefits and risks of each?
Much appreciated for guidence
Simon

hi,
9 TB export import! wow... thats as mamoth task. Try oracle transportable tablespace. I believe to transport data of that size transportable tablespace is the only viable solution.
I have set up an transportable tb example on my home page if you wanna peek at it;
http://jaydba.tripod.com/id79.html
What version of Oracle? if it is 10G transportable tablespace export will work across platforms (Thats what i have heard, not used yet) and if you are on prior version of Oracle platform will be a constraint.
Hope this helps,

  • Oracle Export dump file

    Hi All,
How can i check the dump is ok or not withought importing....
Is there any utility to check it.....

    Hi ,
While creating the dump , you should have given a log file where it stores all the log. check the log file to see if it says : EXPORT SUCCESSFULL WITHOUT WARNINGS.. in the end,..
that is when the export has been successful.
Morover , i dont know any advanced method , but if you have a small database , just count the number of tables in your Db and then match it with the number of tables mentioed in the log.
also , if the database is not getting populated frequently , you can randomly choose a table and perform select count(*) on it.. and that should be equal to the number of records exported..

  • Finding create user statement using the export dump

I have an Oracle export dump and it is a schema level export only.
Is there any way that I can get the create user statement from that dump using import full=y show=y ?
How do I identify the create user statement once I did the show=y

Yes with full export this is possible because full export will create all schemas but this is not possible with schema level export because schema level import does not recreate schema.

There probably is a utiltiy somewhere.

  • Export dump and the Oracle performance

My prod system is 10g r2 on an AIX box with 4 CPU ( oracle only uses two) and 4 G memory. It also installs with a BAAN 5c system. I noticed that when I did the export dump, the Oracle system was slow to other query processes by the BAAN and the message "Memory Notification: Library Cache Object loaded into SGA
Heap size 8356K exceeds notification threshold (2048K)" were shown up in alert log. Although there is a solution in the metalink to avoid the notification, I think it does not solve the problem underneath. Some system maintenance processes also caused that. So How can I track the real cause(s)? Maybe my original configuration need to reconfigure.

Oracle was slow because running export is rather resource intensive (lots and lots of I/O). You generally want to avoid generating an export when the system is being actively used. As an aside, I hope that you're not using the export as your primary backup...
The message you're getting (presumably in Enterprise Manager) would appear to be both reasonable and probably not the source of the slowdown. I'm not shocked to learn that BAAN has some objects which are relatively large, running an export brings them into the library cache, which generates the alert. I would expect that you'd have to get that alert in order to do an export, so it may be reasonable to turn it off if this is a regular thing.

  • Scripting Oracle export and import dumps

    Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to script oracle export and import dump commands in a PL/SQL package rather than at command prompt. Also, how can i copy the export dump files across the network to a specific location.
I would really appreciate if someone can provide me with examples????
    Thanks.

    Yes, there's DBMS_JOB on 9i, it's sort of DBMS_SCHEDULER's 'grampa' ;)
Check the 9i docs (http://tahiti.oracle.com) and do some searches here and on http://asktom.oracle.com for more info.
Hoewever, in order to execute OS-commands, you'll probably need a JAVA wrapper.
    DBMS_JOB cannot do that.
    Examples can be found here:

I would really appreciate if someone can provide me with examples????
    OR
If there is off the shelf solution for what i am trying to achieve?
    Many Thanks.

    Hello,
there are many ways to do this:
    - Java with PL/SQL wrapper,
    - call C code as external procedure from PL/SQL,
    - DBMS_SCHEDULER has some features related to this as well,
    - or write your own logic: for example creating a new file with UTL_FILE could be the trigger of the export.

and only 2 new tablespaces (originally 3) were
created without any data in ( i check that in
the Oracle Storage manager : the tablespaces exit
with 0.002 used space; originally 60 M for each !!)
    so,
How to import data (with full import option) succefully
MORE THAN ONE TIME from an exported dump file ?
Even if we have to overwrite tablespaces , tables and users.
    thank you very much

  • Need help for importing oracle 10G dump into 9i database

hi, Someone help me to import oracle 10G dump into 9i database. I'm studying oracle . Im using oracle 10G developer suite(downloaded from oracle) and oracle 9i database. I saw some threads tat we can't import the higher version dumps into lower version database. But i'm badly need help for importing the dump...
    or
someone please tell me the site to download oracle 9i Developer suite as i can't find it in oracle site...

I didnt testet it to import a dump out of a 10g instance into a 9i instance if this export has been done using a 10g environment.
But it is possible to perform an export with a 9i environment against a 10g instance.
I am just testing this with a 9.2.0.8 environment against a 10.2.0.4.0 instance and is working so far.
The system raises an EXP-00008 / ORA-37002 error after exporting the data segments (exporting post-schema procedural objects and actions).
I am not sure if it is possible to perform an import to a 9i instance with this dump but maybe worth to give it a try.
It should potentially be possible to export at least 9i compatible objects/segments with this approach.
However, I have my doubts if this stunt is supported by oracle ...
