Oracle Express 10g Installation

I have recently installed Orale Database 10g Express Edition. I have included installation data below:
Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Product
PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
CORE 10.2.0.1.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production

My problem is in regard to NLS settings. I am not in the US however the default install NLS parameters are for the US as show below

Of course I was not able to connect to the database from JDeveloper or SQL Developer until I changed the regional and Local settings on my computer to America/US. But this unfortunately creates other problems.
Does anyone know how to install the 10g Express database using other NLS settings for say UK? or has a workaround for this problem.
I looked extensively at forums and goggled for a solution, but none really gave clear steps on how to resolve the issue.

Where are you taking these parameters from?, database_properties?
There is a hierarchy of values. From lower to upper, database settings, instance settings, session settings and instruction settings. So the lower level parameter is valid unless an upper level parameter overrides it. You can define parameters at the instance level, and these settings will override the database settings.

Oracle Express 10g - cannot install on Windows 2003

I'm trying to install Oracle Express 10g on Windows 2003. On this machine already works MS SQL2005 server.
The installation starts ok but after copying files installer disappears whitout any message (in that moment an icon on desktop should be created, but it's not) All files copied first by installer are deleted upon it finishes it's work. From the same package I installed Express on Windows XP and then there was everything ok.
I checked install log but it didn't tell me much. It looks more or less the same as the log file from succesful installation until bolded line:
MSI (s) (30:A4) [15:02:44:281]: User policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
MSI (s) (30:A4) [15:02:44:281]: Machine policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
Action ended 15:02:44: InstallFinalize. Return value 2.
On successful installation the return value is 1. But it doesn't tell me anything. Also in event logs I got only mssinstaller information (event 11708)
Product: Oracle Database 10g Express Edition -- Installation operation failed.
Do anyone experienced such problem?

Corrupt Data1.cab in Oracle Express 10g Universal for Windows

Hello Oracle Folks,
I downloaded several times Oracle Express 10g Universal for Windows (OracleXEUniv.exe) and tried to install it and I get every time the same error message: "Error 1335. The required file "Data1.cab" is corrupt and cannot be used ...". When I download the Western European Edition (OracleXE.exe) the installation works! I downloaded the file on different local disks to exclude the risk that my disk is damaged.
Can you please check if this download is sane!

The stupid installation program for your stupid database was supposed to check the version of the Operating System. Anyway how does the operating system version matter if a cab file is corrupted? which was incidently packed in that stupid download link which you have happily given to all customers all this time. I was hoping to find that since you guys are too lazy to make the installation file properly you might have atleast bothered to put up a download link for that stupid Data1.cab. But nooo... The 'stupid installation program' is indeed that - a stupid installation program. It does a certain amount of checking, but definitely not enough. In that I do agree with you. It was also released too early - basrely understands how to spell Vista.
Also, there is an assumption by Oracle that the person downloading reads the documentation, especially the installation guide, that is available at the same location as the download. It is amazing and extremely disappointing to note how many people will not even attempt to look at the link.
The real sad part for me is that I frequently download software (and did again in this case) to verify that the user has a legitimate complaint. The 'data1.cab' that I received was not corrupt. Therefore I conclude the original poster made some huge assumption that is likely invalid. Now, I did install into an XP machine, and that could make a difference.
As for the 'you guys' statement - perhaps you should take that up with Oracle or an Oracle employee. Directing at me is an unsubstantiated assumption on your part. <g>

Yup. You could easily go there. Shows yet another assumption. (In fact, my company is centered around Linux and Oracle. And I have made a conscious decision, based on 3 decades of experience, to toss MySQL and stick with Oracle. And now that Sun, which owns MySQL, seems to be on the auction block, the future of MySQL is definitely up in the air.)
However, given how many assumptions you make and how valid they are, you may find it easier to stick with MySQL. Oracle Express edition potentially could save huge buckets of time and effort in the long run, but it does require reading, research and other skills to get up to speed.
Now, as to your problem
1) This is not the forum to discuss issues with installation. (If the problem is traced to the download source, then this is the right spot.)
2) There is a dedicated forum for Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Express Edition (Oracle Database Express Edition (XE)
3) You are absolutely correct that the installer should be smart enough to check the OS. It does not.
4) Since it does not, and since there are differences, knowing which version AND edition of Windows (or which Linux distro and release) is critical to troubleshooting.

Oracle Express 10g - a way to terminate in SQL Command Line interface

I've downloaded Oracle Express 10g and use the SQL Command Line interface to execute SQL*Plus -- a really simple window / interface without hardly any smarts. In other Oracle installations' SQL*Plus, I'm used to be able to do a Ctrl C to terminate the current SQL that's being executed and the session is still active and I can keep using it. But with the Oracle Express 10g SQL Command Line interface, when I do a Ctrl C the currrent SQL is terminated -- but so is the whole dang session and the window goes away too. There must be a way in the Oracle Express 10g SQL Command Line interface to simply terminate th current SQL results without losing the whole dang session!!! This is so incredibly frustrating it's not even funny. HELP!!!!

As a software application developer, I have been considering Oracle certification for a while to enhance my skill set. Unfortunately I don't have access to a commercial Oracle installation, and would like to use a free version of Oracle Express during my studies. The latest OCA courses largely focus on Oracle 11g, and it would appear that there is no free (Express) 11g database available yet.
Could anyone please advise me whether it would be possible and practical to prepare for the 1Z0-051 Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I and 1Z0-052 Oracle Database 11g: Administration I exams using an Oracle Express 10g database instance, while accompanied by the relevant Oracle 11g study material? In other words, is the overlap between Oracle 10g and 11g sufficient that a solid understanding of 10g could allow me to successfully sit the 11g exams? Furthermore, would the Express edition of the database provide sufficient functionality to prepare for the Administration exam?

For 1z0-052 the situation is different. Oracle 10g express edition hides some of the administration tasks ... you really need to be using 11g.
If you dont waht Oracle 11g all over your regular machine then I would typically recommend install Oracle Enterprise Linux either on a spare machine with a dual core or HT processor and with 2GB or more of memory (eg Dell gx280 or better); or using a virtualisation solution on your current machine (ram would need to be 3GB or higher) (eg virtualbox or whatever ... though windows as a guest can have a license issue).

Oracle Express 11g installation issue

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise (x64). I am trying to install Oracle Express 11g but at the product prerequisite check shows:
Checking for Oracle XE service instance FAILED
the other checks succeed.
I have already installed Oracle Express 10g on my Windows. My first question is can 10g express and 11g express co-exist?
I am not sure what this FAILED check means??

I have the 10.2.0.1 driver on the clients I am running and the app has 10.2.0.4 (I think) and so decided that updating the clients drivers might solve the problems as described in that thread.
I have downloaded the instant client basic and odbc for windows x32 but am unsure what I need to do next as I have Oracle Express installed. I couldnt find one specifically for Express 10g.
Do I have the correct drivers downloaded and how do I install them into odbc ?

My understanding is that to be a MetaLink subscriber you have to be an Oracle customer or subscribe for Oracle support services. Since Oracle is only one of the many databases we support, and because our sole objective with Oracle is compatibility testing, it's unlikely that we will become subscribers unless it's essentially free.
Oracle is tangential (not core) to our own offerings, so we don't have a pressing need for support. Is there some avenue for people in our shoes?

ORA-00904 Oracle express 10g

I've downloaded oracle express 10g and am trying to learn application builder. When I build a new application the database used on the last tab gets a ORA-00904. If I drop the table and recreate it the problem goes away until I try to build another application. I suspect this is a bug rather than a feature. Any Ideas anyone

OPS$ Account on Oracle Express 10g on Linux

I have the exact same setup for an identical OPS$ account on an Oracle Standard Edition 10g database (running on Linux) and it works perfectly when logging in as
sqlplus /
However, the same setup does not work for the same OPS$ account on Oracle Express 10g. I have seen previous postings about OPS$ accounts that worked with Linux but not Windows XP (with the solution posted) but I seem to be having a problem getting Linux to work. I am running Redhat Linux Enterprise Edition 4.0.

To have OPS$ account on XE you need to put user you using in ORA_DBA user group.

Companion CD installation - getting Oracle Database 10g installation

Hi everyone,
I want to install the Oracle Companion CD (to use HTTP server and HTMLDB) on Solaris with Oracle Database 10g. I downloaded the companion CD and when running the installer I am getting "Welcome to the Oracle Database 10g Installation". I have already installed the database so my question is why the installer is asking me to install another database ? The documentation is explaining that the user would have the choice to select an HTTP server installation.

Get the companion CD from the same place as the database. Start at http://otn.oracle.com, click on Downloads, and to to the Database download
Get the step by step instructions from the documentation. Start at http://tahiti.oracle.com, go to the database documentation for the version you are using, click on the Books tab, search for "Companion CD Installation Guide for [your operating system]" or "Companion CD Quick Installation Guide for [your operating system]" and follow the steps.
I strongly encourage you to install ONLY the HTTP server from the companion CD, and to install it into a separate ORACLE_HOME.
After that, I suggest you use APEX instead of HTMLDB (APEX is the next generation of HTMLDB and is MUCH better.) To get that going, start at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html and look at "Documentation and Tutorials" for the installlation guide.

Which Developer Tools for Oracle Express 10g?

I'm new to the area of developing .NET apps with Oracle. Till now 'Ive downloaded the Oracle Express 10g Edition and installed it.
Now I want to install the Developer tools for .NET and I am not sure which one to install. I've seen that currently there are several downloads
- Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21 with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio
- Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21 with Xcopy Deployment
- Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21
- Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET with Oracle 10g Release 2 ODAC 10.2.0.2.21
- Oracle 10g Release 2 ODAC 10.2.0.2.21
- Oracle 10g ODAC 10.1.0.4.0
- Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET 10.1.0.4
Which of those should I use? Will the latest version (11.1.0.6.21) work with the 10g Express Edition? Or should I install one of the others?
I've got installed both VS 2005 Prof and VS 2008 Prof SP1 on my machine.

Where to locate HTTP Server for use with Oracle Express 10g and Apex?

Hello,
Im a newbie and I downloaded oracle express 10g and Apex 3.2.1. The Apex install is referencing "choosing a HTTP Server" specifically "Oracle HTTP Server and mod_plsql and the embedded PL/SQL Gateway". My question is do the HTTP server or PL SQL embedded Gateway come with the 10g install or do I need to download them seperately? If so where can I locate them?

Oracle Express 10G Vulnerability Report

It is my understanding that Oracle Express 10G (10.2.0.2) release 2 does not have security patches released. The plan is to release another version (11g) when available. Is this correct?
Is there any report that states Oracle Express 10G edition is vulnerable\not vulnerable to known security exploits? I have found very little information. What I have found is basically "Vulnerabilities may affect Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE). According to Oracle, Oracle Database XE is based on the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code".
What is Oracle's stance on security patches for Oracle Express? I imagine it states "if you're concerned there is an Enterprise edition that can be purchased with regular security patches".

Check out the following thread at Re: Upgrade and Patch Policy . Security patches are provided in newer releases, not CPU patches.
