  • Connect target / getting ORA-12560

    Hi,
    Can I issue:
RMAN TARGET / in CMD where I have only Oracle software installed in my machine -indeed I saw this in a tutorial in the internet !-.
If so, why could be the problem if I'm getting ORA-12560 error.
    Saad,

    RMAN TARGET /
The command illustrate that RMAN connecting to a target DB. So is your DB service up which you are trying to connect.

  • Getting ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter on server

    Hi,
We have a server on Windows, Oracle version 10.2.0.4.
It was working fine, but all of a sudden we have started getting "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter" when trying to connect as SYS.
What could be the possible reason. Nothing new has been done on the server.
    Thanks.

  • Oracle Database 11g Installation Issue: ORA-12560:TNS: protocol adapter error.

    Folks,
Hello. Initially, my Windows XP host name is "localhost" and IP address 127.0.0.1.
I installed Oracle Database 11g with Windows XP successfully and all Database clients work with Database instance correctly.
For some reasons, I uninstalled the entire Database Server and delete the entire installation directory /oracle.
I configured Windows XP IP address into 192.168.196.101 in order to ping other machines.
For my need, I installed Oracle Database 11g with Windows XP again. On step 7 of 8: Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, I got this error:
    ORA-12560:TNS: protocol adapter error.
I click "Password Management" button, there are no rows in this Windows (no username, no lock accounts).
    I check listener as below:
    C:\>lsnrctl
    LSNRCTL>start
Its output: listener name LISTENER has already been started.
    LSNRCTL>status
Its output: ......Service DB1 has 1 instance. Instance DB1 status ready. The command completed successfully.
I check \Oracle\cfgtoollogs\dbca\DB1\trace file, the entry is :
    listen[0]=LISTENER address=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=localhost)(port=1522))
I also check \oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\SAMPLE\tnsnames.ora file and listener.ora file, the entries are the same as below
    HOST=localhost  port=1522
I think HOST=localhost and port=1522 is the cause of the error ORA-12560 because Windows XP has been configured into HOST=192.168.196.101.
But I don't understand how to solve this issue.
Can any folk tell me how to solve this issue ? need to cancel the installation on step 7 of 8 and install it again ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. Oracle Database 11g Installation Wizard is on step 7 of 8. I don't cancel the Wizard. I am not sure whether there is effect or not. listener.ora is not removed. I have been waiting for a while after stop listener.  I run the 3 commands again and copy the result as below:

  • Vbscript to connect to oracle fails with ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error

I am running a Windows 7, 64 bit system with the Oracle 32 bit client installed.  The 32 bit client is required for use with Oracle's Documaker Studio which is working fine with the current client configuration.  I would like to connect the same database using a vbscript.  Here is the test script I am using:
    Option Explicit
    Dim strCon
    strCon = "Driver={Oracle in OraClient11g_home1_32bit}; " & _
             "CONNECTSTRING=(DESCRIPTION=" & _
             "(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)" & _
             "(HOST={VSTODEEDATxx.xxxxxxx.com})(PORT=1521))" & _
             "(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=IDMAKER))); uid=xxxxxx;pwd=xxxxxxxx;"
Dim oCon: Set oCon = WScript.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Dim oRs: Set oRs = WScript.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
    oCon.Open strCon
Set oRs = oCon.Execute("SELECT TO_CHAR(SYSDATE,'MM-DD-YYYY HH24:MI:SS') AS DateTime FROM DUA")
    While Not oRs.EOF
        WSCript.Echo oRs.Fields(0).Value
        oRs.MoveNext
    Wend
    oCon.Close
    Set oRs = Nothing
    Set oCon = Nothing
In the connection string I am using the 32 bit driver used succesfully by Documaker.  I provided all the parms to eliminate the need for tnsnames.ora.  However, I do have tnsnames.ora on my system and Documaker is using it.
Since the client is 32 bit, I am using the following command to run the script:
    c:\windows\syswow64\cscript.exe c:\temp\oracle\testing\testconnect.vbs
This is suppose to run the script in 32 bit mode and be compatible with the client.
When I run the program I get the following error:
Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
c:\temp\oracle\testing\testconnect.vbs(12, 1) Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC
    Drivers: [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
Would someone please advise on how to debug this problem?  Thanks, Gary

"connectstring" is not a valid attribute with Oracle's ODBC driver, so since there is no datasource attribute specified, the app is trying to connect to a local database, and since you don't have one, you get 12560.
To resolve the problem, pass DBQ=      instead of  CONNECTSTRING=

  • Get ORA-12560 error while accessing 11g database

    Database version: 11.2.0.1.0
This is a development database running on CentOS. We had setup this database recently and everything has been fine. Today I noticed that when I connect to the database from remote, I get the following error -
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
I'm able to get in to the database after logging in directly into the database server via putty. I have stopped & restarted the database, but with no help. I have checked the environment variables (ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID) and they seem to be fine.
Can you please help on what might be the problem here? Is this something to do with some change in the OS firewall setting?

  • I getting ORA-12560 error, how to rectify this

    hai everybody,
I just try to shutdown my DB using shu it took time to stop and then i wait sometime but it will not shutdown so end that session.....
after that i am getting this error..
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    plz anyone help me..

If you're running on windows you need to startup the database <b>"service"</b> before being able to connect to startup. It's advisable you use oradim to perform the startup and shutdown. Using oradim you can start the service and then the instance.

  • Oracle 10g installing on Oracle EL, getting ORA-12157 error?

My boss is getting really impatient. I have tried installing Oracle 10g on... Oracle EL, CentOS 4, Fedora 4, Fedora 5, and I get the same error on them alll...
ORA-12157: TNS: internal network communication error
This occurs during the end phase of the installation, when it says "Clone database creation". Network seems to be working, can ping the server, static IP, all that?
Any help appreciated, I've been working on this for 5 days.
    Jon

    Verbatim, this error means:
    ORA-12157:     TNS:internal network communication error
Cause:     Internal error during network communication.
Action:     Not normally visible to the user. For further details, turn on tracing and reexecute the operation. If error persists, contact Worldwide Customer Support.Have you met all requirements before proceeding with installation? Do you have all required patches? Is there any warnng during the prerrequisites verifying routine? Is there any outstanding issue recorded on your install log file?
I suggest you, after verifying above points, to go ahead wiht a software only installation, next, using the network and databse assistants perform a network configuration and a database creation, this way you'll be able to isolate the source of the problem and go ahead with a specific troubleshootig.

  • Oracle 8i, Getting ORA-1501 error while creating new DB

    Hi folks,
I am trying create a new database on an HP Machine (Details given below) but getting following error.
ORA-1501 - signalled during Create Database
    LOGFILE 'G:\logfiles\logaf1.ora'
We actually have a custom application setup.exe to create new database.
Same setup when installed on a different low end machine works fine.
Before begining the setup in summary page it shows following information.
Block buffer count = -3 Bytes
Shared Pool Size = -41425 KBytes
Yes the values displayed are in negative.
Don't know if this is the reason for the ORA-1501 error.
Can anyone please suggest how to resolve this issue.
    Machine configuration is as follows:
    H/W details:
    HP Server with RAID configuration
    4, PIII CPU's
    RAM: "4 GB"
    S/W details
    O.S:Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack-2
    Oracle Version: 8i
Patch applied: Oracle8i Patch Set Version 8.1.7.3.0

Try look to alert<SID>.log file for full error report (you could paste it here).
Also from alert log you could get real values for db_block_buffers and shared_pool_size parameters that used during instance startup.

I'm in initial stages of testing Oracle 12c (12.1.0.1) on Windows, 64-bit with an application I develop.

ORA-48187: specified directory does not exist
OSD-00002: additional error information O/S-Error: (OS 5) Access is denied.
The directory exists, but appears to be read-only. I've changed that (just to check), and there's no change except that the permissions are set back to read-only after the attempt. Ideas?

Is it Vista or 2008, by default in these severs only files have a read only attribute Any changes to the folder's read-only box will only affect the files inside the folder, then the read-only box will default back to blue when you check it again.
Because the attribute is set on the file level, then unchecking the folder box doesn't remove the Read-Only attribute, Check his note for more understanding and solution.

  • Getting ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error when starting Oracle8i SVRMGR

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forums, and I guess you could say "somewhat new" to the Oracle DB. I've played around with it casually in the past, but never got real serious with it :)
Anyhow, I wanted to see if someone could help with this. I found an old thread on a similar issue, but nothing seemed to help at all towards resolution, so I thought I would start a new thread, and maybe get some fresh ideas.
The issue is, I start SVRMGR on Oracle8i, and get the ORA-1260: TNS:protocol adapter error.
    Here is my setup:
    OS: Win2k Advanced Server
    CPU: 2 - 930MHz Intel Xeon's
    RAM: 1GB DIMM
    DB Version: Oracle8i
No firewalls or any other TCP interference. Ok, so now that's out the way :), here is the issue:
When I start the SVRMGR, I get that error immediately. I have checked my tnsnames.ora file, and found some discrepancies, and have corrected them (at least to my knowledge), restarted all the Windows services running the various databases, and closed/re-opened the SVRMGR, and still get the same thing.
For reference, here is a copy of the tnsnames.ora file:

    HI,
1). Can you connect normally from SQL Plus?
-----------------------Here is entry in your Tnsnames.ora file.------------------------------
#You must check that your Dbase Listener is Listening request on port 1521.
    ORCL9i =

    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Local-Server)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl9i)
    2). For pinging a service.
    If you've Microsoft Windows.
If your database service name is orcl9i
    Run->Cmd
    Tnsping orcl9i
--It will give you as following information either "OK" or Fail.

I would like to mention that Svrmgr30 was in Oracle 8. And Oracle 8i uses Svrmgrl.

Hi, I installed Oracle developer suite to use for Oracle forms but am getting "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error" when trying to run a form. The database is running locally on my PC.
I've run the command line to see if hostname matches up with the "HOST= " in the ".../network/admin/listener.ora " file match, they do. What can I try next? I did have Oracle 10gXE installed, which I have now removed. I'm including my tnsnames and listener file content:

Thanks in advance for any help!

Of course you found another one. Each .and every Oracle database client home (such as developer, app server) has one.
Don't just change the port - the tnsnames.ora in the dev home does not point to a database service. It only points to an extproc [external procedure called by a database]. You need to put a database service entry into that file similar to the one in the database home. (Easiest solution - copy the tnsnames.ora from db home ... after you've made a backup)
And please don't tell me you are using Developer 6i - a simple Google search would verify that the networking is incompatible.

  • ORA-12560 error in VS2010

I'm getting "ORA-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error" when trying to Add Connection in VS2010 (Server Explorer > Add Connection > Username: hr, Password: hr, Data source name: Local Database). This is sample HR database in Oracle XE 10g.
I'm guessing this could be something related to installation? My installation was like this: Oracle XE 10g which I've been using for couple of weeks. I then installed VS2010 Ultimate x86 followed by ODT with ODAC 11.2. This is on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I've noticed that ODT is installed in D:\app, while XE is in D:\oraclexe.
I can access my database through APEX interface. Running 'sqlplus' in command line issues same ORA-12560 error. Running 'Run SQL Command Line' from Start > Oracle XE 10g works. This obviously points to wrong configuration / installation, but how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

This obviously points to wrong configuration / installation, but how to fix it? That depends on the type of client connection initiated - local IPC connection (also called a bequeath connection) or a network (TCP) connection.
For a local IPC connection to work, the client driver needs to know the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID of the local database instance - this is usually set via the environment.
For a TCP connection to work, you need an Oracle Listener running on the Oracle server, the local Oracle database instance to have registered itself with the Listener, and for the client being able to connect to the Listener via TCP.
Oracle Listener is a service on Windows - but the command line program is called lsnrctl and via it one can start/stop the listener and determine its status and registered services. With the Listener running, the local database should automatically register itself with the Listener, unless one manually changed database or Listener parameters.
For TCP connectivity, the usual applies - firewalls must not block TCP access, the client needs to resolve the server hostname into an IP (if hostnames are used), that server IP must be reachable, etc.
