Oracle Linux 6.2 - hyper-threading

Hello
two simple questions, I hope 8^)
if I installed OL 6.2 and then also upgraded to UEK R2, on X64 Intel server - both tasks done with hyper-threading enabled and then I want to disable hyper-threading after OS installation - do I need to make any OS system/parameter changes at Linux OS level or simply turn off H/T at hardware level and reboot the server ?
is there general recommendation re when H/T is beneficial on Oracle Linux with UEK ?
what about if I added more RAM to the same 64-bit Intel server? Any Linux OS changes required to get all RAM recognised by OS ?
thanks!

A recommendation does not mean the absolute best solution for every situation. There has been no information about any particular software deployment or even the particular CPU in question.
I agree with you that enabling or disabling HTT in regard to achieving the best possible performance for a particular scenario is subject to testing. But, if someone asks me what is the recommendation about HTT in regard to Oracle UEK kernel, and possibly Oracle RDBMS, my suggestion is to use the default and leave HTT enabled. I'm not aware of any documentation that suggest to generally disable HTT when using Oracle. Saying "it depends" is scientifically correct, but not helpful.
There are already plenty of discussions about HTT on the net. You can turn HTT off and experience a performance increase, but there is also a chance the performance was even better with HTT enabled in a properly configured system or application. There are cases were HTT apparently slows down performance, but drawing a conclusion about enabling or disabling HTT in regard to performance is often too simple due to many other factors that can interfere with the results.
Dude the link you supplied referenced some old ibm information.Well, Hyper-Threading isn't a new feature.
For what it's worth, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading in particular "Drawback history".
Or http://www.intel.com/support/processors/pentium4/sb/cs-017371.htm#1c which also links to more performance info.

  • Oracle 9i R2 and Hyper threading

    Hi
    This is a matter of confusion to me, I've tested Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on several machines with Hyper threading 1 CPU Intel and Dual Xeon servers.
    When installing oracle the CPU_COUNT and PARALLEL_THREAD_PER_CPU parameters are set automatically.
    ie: Intel 3.0 HT
    CPU_COUNT = 2
    PARALLEL_THREAD_PER_CPU = 2
    Dual Xeon 2.8 HT
    CPU_COUNT = 2
    PARALLEL_THREAD_PER_CPU = 4
    with this default settings our application is dragging it's feet (developped on 4.5 upgraded to 6i client/server)
    But if we set
    CPU_COUNT = 1
    PARALLEL_THREAD_PER_CPU = 2
    for the Intel the app goes lightspeed
    and
    CPU_COUNT = 1
    PARALLEL_THREAD_PER_CPU = 1
    for the xeon again lightspeed
    I didn't face this problem with non HyperThreasding CPUs
    My question:
    Why is this anomoly, what's the workaround without changing the CPU_COUT parameter?
    did anybody else face any problem like this? does this happen in 10g???
    Thanks in Advance
    Tony S. Garabedian

    Any suggestions? Any ideas??

  • Disable Intel CPU Hyper threading in Oracle RAC environment

    Dear Expert,
    Does disable CPU hyper threading will have direct impact or maybe unexpected behavior to Oracle RAC database?
    Actually the background of this question is we have many received packet queuing on the network layer waiting to be processed. Investigation leads to the processor utilization which shows that many processor are still in idle state or not used when the other processors are busy processing incoming request.
    I have visited some oracle note like
    CPU Count Consideration for Oracle Parameter Setting When Using Hyper-Threading Technology (Doc ID 289870.1)
    Oracle and Hyper-Threading (Doc ID 205089.1)
    Using PROCESSOR_GROUP_NAME to bind a database instance to CPUs or NUMA nodes (Doc ID 1585184.1)
    These document already give useful information but i wonder if there is any possibilities risk or another consideration of disabling cpu hyper threading.
    Please let me know if any other information required.
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Jolly

    As far as I know it is set as cpu architecture and mobile chips don't have the option. Not 100% as I've never needed to do it.
    Better bet would be to check Intel ark and forums with them I expect.

  • Oracle Linux 6.3 and Oracle VM 3.0.3 : high "os thread startup" waits

    Hi all,
    we just installed Oracle Linux 6.3 as a PVM guest with Oracle VM 3.0.3.
    The vm is acting as a dbserver.
    We see high "os thread startup" wait times from statspack report. A 10-hour report shows:
    Top 5 Timed Events Avg %Total
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ wait Call
    Event Waits Time (s) (ms) Time
    CPU time 13,819 57.5
    db file sequential read 1,839,279 5,791 3 24.1
    enq: TX - row lock contention 1 664 ###### 2.8
    os thread startup 1,350 451 334 1.9
    control file sequential read 166,312 386 2 1.6
    This seems to be an OS or virtualization issue: if i run some very simple commands like "ls " or "top", sometimes I see them hangig some seconds .
    What should I check for ?
    Thanks,
    Andrea
    This will sound silly, but: Make sure you aren't a victim of the "Some Linux machines have high CPU utilization after Leap Second insertion on July 1st". If your server was "doing NTP", this might have happened. You can google this, if you didn't hear of it. A reboot makes it go away.
    Does anyone know if the Oracle 9i and 10g database supports Intel's new Hyper Threading technology???
    Since Oracle Linux is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you can use and search "RHEL books". There should some.
  • How to compile Oracle Linux source?
    I accidentally downloaded source DVD "Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 source - DVD" instead of installable ISO image. Is there anyway I can compile it to make bootable ISO image?
    I tried to search this forum as well as other places but couldn't find any information hence thought of opening a thread before I proceed to download correct file which will again take 10+ hrs with my Internet speed :(
    Any help is highly appreciated. Also I need to know which packages are required to be installed for compiling the source if at all that is possible. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop.
    Thanks in advance for any help and hope to get a reply soon :) I need to urgently install Oracle 11gR2 on it.
    Edited by: user6582219 on Apr 12, 2012 1:10 AM
    While browsing the forum for any possible solution I came to a thread that discuss installation of a package oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall. When searched through search engine I came to know about recent certification Oracle 11gR2 on Oracle Linux 6, here is the link https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/announcing_oracle_database_11g_r2
    https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/announcing_oracle_database_11g_r2
    Thing is I already have Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 (the latest) installed on my machine in dual boot mode so I dropped the idea of installing version 5.2. As per the documentation 11gR2 was not certified earlier on Linux 6.2 so I thought of installing 5.2 but it is not necessary now.
    I would still appreciate if someone could answer my question just for knowing the procedure compiling source. May be it can help someone else trying to achieve this.
    I have another couple of important questions and need guidance from the experts over here. I am not sure if it is appropriate to open a new thread but for now I am posting them here.
    Before proceeding here are my environment details:
    Machine: x86 32 bit with 2 GB RAM/250 GB HD.
    OS: Kubuntu 11.10 Desktop and Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 in dual boot mode.
    Here are my partition details for your reference but as I am planning to do the installation from the scratch following new ideal scheme you can jump to last paragraph following the line "*********************************" for my questions.
    Unfortunately my partition plan went wrong and here is what I have now:
    Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders, total 488397168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x3d5ba9e1
    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 2048 1002047 500000 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 151525080 361253654 104864287+ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda4 1003518 151001087 74998785 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 1003520 7002111 2999296 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda6 7004160 11001855 1998848 83 Linux
    /dev/sda7 11003904 51001343 19998720 83 Linux
    /dev/sda8 51003392 110041087 29518848 83 Linux
    Partition table entries are not in disk order
    /dev/sda1 here is /tmp, /dev/sda2 is my data partition, I have separate /home / (root) partition for Kubuntu and remianing around 20 GB in extended partition is used for Oracle Linux 6.2 with default Oracle suggested LVM partition. I also have separate /boot for Kubuntu and I chose not to install grub while installing Oracle Linux. I later modified grub.cfg to add entries for Oracle Linux and now I can boot both OSs successfully.
    My issue now is I cannot extend 20 GB space (in extended partition) that I have given to Oracle though I have around 40 GB space available. This is because I alreay have 4 primary partitions (one for /boot others for "data" and one extended partition). So I have to make primary partition out of free space and install Oracle in a single partition without following recommended partition layout scheme.
    Now I want to do the installation of both the OS from the scratch and really need an advice on partition layout scheme. Here is summary of what I wan to achieve:
    1. Keep the "data" partition (primary) intact and carve an ideal partition layout for both the OS with separate /boot, /tmp, /home, swap (and may be for /usr???). Also may be I can share swap?
    2. How do I go about using LVM and is it recommended for this case? What would be ideal locations for each partitions and sizes? I already used 100 GB for "data" so now I want to keep 60 GB for Oracle Linux (and Oracle DB for which I will again make few sub-partitions) and remaining will be for Kubuntu.
    Well, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions but since I can see very knowlegeable top contributors here that are willing to help novice users I thought of posting these questions.
    I would really really appreciate if someone can provide me rough draft of partition scheme in my case considering the sub-partitions needed for Oracle DB. I went thorugh number of forums and documentations to come up with solutuion and finally thought of getting help after much confusion.
    I really need to carefully plan this time because it's third time I am doing reinstallation from the scratch because of poor plan I followed previously.
    Thank you very much in advance and please let me know in case more information is needed from my side.
    Regards,
    Ramesh
    I accidentally downloaded source DVD "Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 source - DVD" instead of installable ISO image. Is there anyway I can compile it to make bootable ISO image?Google will be your best friend for such a question, for instance, "Creating a Custom centos Linux bootable ISO Image". There is no need to duplicate the effort. I recommend you download the correct installation DVD, e.g. 5.8
As per the documentation 11gR2 was not certified earlier on Linux 6.2 so I thought of installing 5.2 but it is not necessary now.So you don't need to install 5.2 anymore, but you want the information how to compile a installation DVD from the 5.2 source anyway?!
    I have another couple of important questions and need guidance from the experts over here. I am not sure if it is appropriate to open a new thread but for now I am posting them here.Questions may be important for you, but not necessarily for others. No one will complain if you create a new thread for particular questions or subjects. It is better to separate your topics and questions rather than creating a multi-mega thread, which does little to help anyone else but you. It means more work on your end, but it will be easier for anyone to participate or answer your questions, and it will allow you to better award answers.
    Regarding your partitioning questions: It is generally difficult to address such topics in a forum. You are asking for a book of information. My advice is to drop the old fashioned concepts of dual or triple boot options and install Oracle VirtualBox instead. It will make all of these questions obsolete and you can use whatever defaults when installing your virtual machine guest OS. Its a far more superior way of dealing with multiple operating systems on one and the same computer.
    I am using Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop.
    I need to urgently install Oracle 11gR2 on it.For what it's worth, if you can combine the two source below you should be able to install and run 11gR2 on Ubuntu 11.10.
    Install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (64-bit) Howto
    Install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (64-bit) Howto
    Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition on Linux Ubuntu 11.10 howto
    Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition on Linux Ubuntu 11.10 howto
    However, check out VirtualBox.
    I want to upgrade my OS from official repository on Primary and Standby Servers. And I have a question:
    Will I have a problem with my RDBMS after upgrade OS (e.g. statuses in dba_registry will become INVALID)?
    It's Ok.
    Now I have:
    $ cat /etc/issue
    Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
    No any problem.
  • Oracle Linux 6.3 in Win2012 R2 Hyperview
    Hi,
    I hope this is the right place for my question.
    I'm trying to run Oracle Linux 6.3 in Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyperview V.  As for Microsoft, this should run fine.
    However  "should" is a dangerous word.
    On  my system Linux can't access the networkcard, that seems to be a known issue.
    I found an solution:
    Step-By-Step: Installing Oracle Linux 6 U3 on Hyper-V 2012 with LIS 3.4 - Canadian IT Professionals - Site Home - TechNe…
    However, this step make me feel uncomfortable:
    # vi /etc/sysconfig/kernel,
    (delete –uek from last of DEFUALT KERNEL..line)
    As far as I know this diables the unbreakable "component" right?
    Is there any way to get Oracle Linux to run under hyperview that is "proved by Oracle?"
    Regards
    Christian
    Microsoft probably does not want you to run anything other than Windows . I not sure if it helps, but I think I read that Oracle has made further progress with Hyper-V compatibiity and mentioned it in the release notes, but probably for versions later than 6.3.
    You might want to check the following link that provides a list of what components shoud work with what version of Oracle Linux and UEK. It was apparently updated Dec 2014 and does not even mention 6.3 anymore:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn609828.aspx
  • Compiling VMtools on Oracle Linux 6.2 gives errors
    I am trying to compile the vmtools on a Oracle Linux 6.2 VMware installation. I'm getting strange compilation errors on all the vmtools. Log pasted below.
    I have found thread VMware Tools and Oracle Linux Howto and followed the items in there with no help and no change.
    yum -y install kernel-headers is all up to date
    yum -y install kernel-devel is all up to date
    Here are the issues I see:
    1. Compiling the shared folder says linux/smp_lock.h does not exist, and then fails with SPIN_LOCK_UNLOCKED undeclared and unknow field `get_sb'
    2. The network device driver fails in vmxnet.c
    3. The vmblock module fails in dentry.c
    4. The communication service fails in vmci_drv.c
    5. The VM communication interface fails in vmci_drv.c
    6. The X configuration is skipped because there are "no drivers for X.ora version: 7.9.6" (see the bottom of the log below).
    The filesystem driver (vmhgfs module) is used only for the shared folder
    feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
    independently of this feature.
    If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by
    running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
    and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
    These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.
    You can now run VMware Tools by invoking the following command:
    "/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox" during an X server session.
    To enable advanced X features (e.g., guest resolution fit, drag and drop, and
    file and text copy/paste), you will need to do one (or more) of the following:
    1. Manually start /usr/bin/vmware-user
    2. Log out and log back into your desktop session; and,
    3. Restart your X session.
    Actually, I did exactly that:
    yum -y install gcc
    yum -y install kernel-uek-devel-`uname -r`
    yum -y install kernel-uek-headers-`uname -r`
    The headers with the uname gave an error that the headers do not exist. The others ran fine.
    I did:
    yum -y install kernel-uek-headers
    and that worked.
    However, NONE of this changed the errors - they were exactly the same before and after. The problem is still not resolved.
    However, I did try a different approach. I found the VMware Operating System Packages (OSPs) through the following link: http://www.vmware.com/download/packages.html. I installed that, and it seemed to work fine.
    The problem that we had, which was the original reason why I wanted to have the VMware tools, was that the disk was sized too small and I thought with the tools we could resize the disk. It didn't work, we could not edit the size in the VMware console. So we ended up blowing away that VM and are in the process of recreating it at a larger size. I'll take a snapshot of the state before the OSP install so I can test the compile version in case someone posts something useful here.
    Is there any free resource to study? please help me.
    Thank you
  • Oracle 11gR2 certification for Oracle Linux 6
    Hello,
    According to Oracle documentation, database certification and support for Oracle 11gR2 under Oracle Linux starts with 11.2.0.3.
    I was wondering if this might have anything to do with the i386 software prerequisites. Speaking of Oracle 11gR2 x86_64, the need for i386 libraries was removed with 11gR2 11.2.0.2. Or in other words, one can go straight to 11.2.0.2 without the need to install any 32-bit libraries.
    Under Oracle Linux 5 x86_64, the "oracle-validated" package triggers the installation of several i386 packages. Under Oracle Linux 6 x86_64, the oracle-rdbms-server-11gr2-preinstall package uses x86_64 only. Under Oracle Linux 6, i386 changed to i686.
    For what it's worth, I have installed Oracle 11gR2 database 11.2.0.1 under Oracle Linux 6.1 to 6.3, both x86_64, simply by using the oracle-rdbms-server-11gr2-preinstall package, and so far have not noticed any problems. Is there some information available, why 11.2.0.1 (x86_64) should not be used or is not certified for Oracle Linux 6 (x86_64)?
    Thanks.
    I was afraid of that. Since the question is Oracle Linux 6 specific, I thought I'd try my luck here, thinking that if I get an answer, then probably here. Maybe it was not very realistic to get an answer anyway.
    For what it's worth. Using "oracle-validated" under Oracle Linux 5, and "oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall" under Oracle Linux 6, I was able to install Oracle 11gR2 11.2.0.1 just fine, both platforms x86_64 and 32-bit. I have not found any operational issues yet and it seems to run perfectly well.
    The only trouble I had was with Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.1, and here 11.2.0.3 is indeed required for it to install. I made a custom patch, just a few lines and after that 11.2.0.1, both x86_64 and 32-bit installed just fine and is fully operational.
    I'm though I could post the patch. I guess it might make those people happy who do not have access to Oracle support and download 11.2.0.3. The patch will allow them to use the 11gR2 OTN version and install it under Oracle Linux 6. It won't be certified, but it is good enough for the purpose of education.
    I'm closing the thread.
  • Oracle Linux 6.2 restarts randomly
    Hi all,
    I'm having problems with Oracle Linux server i recently set up.
    I'm running Oracle Linux 6.2 with UEK2 (2.6.39-100.7.1.el6uek.x86_64) and all latest updates from public yum server on VMware eSX 4.1i & VMWare tools installed.
    I've been noticing that when I'm connected with SSH to my server I randomly get an error that the connection is lost and all connected sessions fail. It all happens so quickly that I can not check via console if the server really rebooted.
    But the data from last reboot command is kinda strange - output bellow.
    How it's possible that all last three uptimes are being incremented at once?
    Is the server really restarting or is there any timeout on ssh sessions or what is the problem here?
    What can I check more?
    h1. Oracle Linux NTFS how-to
    Author: Dude
    Version: B, 22-Jan-2012
    h2. Purpose
    This document contains instructions how to install NTFS support under Oracle Enterprise Linux version 4, 5 and Oracle Linux version 5 and 6.
    h2. Topics
    1) Determine Kernel Architecture and Distribution
    2) Setup Software Repositories
    3) Install the NTFS Kernel Driver and Software
    4) Find and Mount a NTFS Device
    5) Notes
    h3. 1) Determine Kernel Architecture and Distribution
    Open a Terminal command prompt and enter the following to check if your system is x86 or x86_64:
    # uname -m
    x86_64If you see "i686" or "i386" instead then your system is x86.
    # cat /etc/redhat-release
    Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 9)The above example shows you are running Enterprise Linux version 4.9
    h3. 2) Setup Software Repositories
    You will need to setup access to two software repositories.
    Oracle ULN or public yum:
    The installation of RPM software packages can be complex due to software conflicts or package dependencies. It is easier to use a software manager like "yum", which will automatically resolve package dependencies and prompt you to download required software if necessary.
    For those who do not have a support subscription and access to Oracle ULN, Oracle provides a public YUM software repository to give you free online access to the standard software distributions. Simply follow the instructions outlined at http://public-yum.oracle.com. You only need to enable the software repository that matches your version according to the previous step.
    Reproforge:
    The NTFS driver is provided by the Repoforge alias RPMforge software repository. For more information about Repoforge, please see http://repoforge.org/faq. NTFS-3G is a stable, full-featured, read-write NTFS driver for Linux and other operating systems. For more information check http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-download, where you can also download the source code should you prefer to compile your own NTFS driver.
    Depending on your current distribution and kernel architecture, you need to install the following:
    Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.x x86:
    # wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el4.rf.i386.rpm
    # rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el4.rf.i386.rpm
    Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.x x86_64:
    # wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el4.rf.x86_64.rpm
    # rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el4.rf.x86_64.rpm
    Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Linux 5.x x86:
    # wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el5.rf.i386.rpm
    # rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el5.rf.i386.rpm
    Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Linux 5.x x86_64:
    # wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm
    # rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm
    Oracle Linux 6.x x86:
    # wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.i686.rpm
    # rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.i686.rpm
    Oracle Linux 6.x x86_64:
    # wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm
    # rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64.rpmh3. 3) Install the NTFS Kernel Driver and Related Software
    The software packages required to support NTFS depends on your current Linux distribution:
    Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.x:
    # yum install dkms dkms-fuse fuse fuse-ntfs-3g
    Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Linux 5.0 - 5.2:
    # yum install dkms dkms-fuse fuse fuse-ntfs-3g
    Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Linux 5.3:
    NTFS support under Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 is broken and you should consider to upgrade to the 5.4 or later. (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=481495)
    Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Linux 5.4 - 5.x:
    As of Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4 the the kernel fuse module (dkms, dkms-fuse) is included in the kernel and should not be installed.
    # yum install fuse fuse-ntfs-3g
    Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Linux 6.x:
    # yum install fuse fuse-ntfs-3g h3. 4) Find and Mount a NTFS Device
    You can use the "blkid" command to identify attached devices. For instance:
    sudo blkid
    /dev/sda1: LABEL="/boot" UUID="73efxxxxxxxxxxxxx_TYPE="ext3" TYPE="ext2"
    /dev/dm-0: UUID="22a2d704-f75dxxxxxxx595df" SEC_TYPE="ext3" TYPE="ext2"
    /dev/dm-1: TYPE="swap" UUID="3b74fxxxxxx411c-8671-2244b8735866"
    /dev/sdb1: TYPE="ntfs"
    {code}
    In the above example, device "/dev/sdb1" contains a NTFS partition.
    To mount the NTFS volume according to above example under the /mnt directory:
    {code}
    sudo mount.ntfs /dev/sdb1 /mnt
    {code}
    I'm afraid there is no general answer. It depends how your device is connected, i.e. internal, usb, etc.?
  • Installing 11gR2 (linux.zseries64) on oracle linux 5 guest system failed
    Dear experts,
    I decided to post a detailed thread since it seems my last thread is totally forgotten. Hopefully, this thread could clarify my problem of installing oracle database 11.2.0.2 in oracle linux guest system in windows 7 host system. Sorry about that.
    I installed oracle linux 5 update 6 x86_64 bits guest system in my windows 7 host using oracle virtualbox 4.2.12 so that I can install oracle database 11.2.0.2 (linux.zseries64_11gR2_database_1of2.zip, linux.zseries64_11gR2_database_2of2.zip). The oracle database I downloaded has some functions which are not available in 11.2.0.1. These two disks are extracted in a shared folder.
    I followed the instructions in a guide to run the installation:
    # yum install oracle-validated
    It succeeded. and, I used uname -a to return this additional information:
    "Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.32-400.26.2.el5uek #1"
    Then I set these below:
    SELINUX=permissive
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01
    chmod -R 775 /u01
    xhost + 127.0.0.1
    and, added something in .bash_profile:
    # Oracle Settings
    TMP=/tmp; export TMP
    TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR
    ORACLE_HOSTNAME=127.0.0.1; export ORACLE_HOSTNAME
    ORACLE_UNQNAME=DB11G; export ORACLE_UNQNAME
    ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/11.2.0/db_1; export ORACLE_HOME
    ORACLE_SID=DB11G; export ORACLE_SID
    PATH=/usr/sbin:$PATH; export PATH
    PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH; export PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib; export CLASSPATH
    Then, I set DISPLAY environment in terminal:
    export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
    Finally, I logged into the guest system as a user, not root, to run the installation. However, I got the frustrating error message:
    [hsl@localhost database]$ ./runInstaller
    ./runInstaller: line 254: /media/sf_My_Share/Oracle/database/install/.oui: cannot execute binary file
    Can anybody please give some advices to fix the problem. The installation is very important to me. Thanks a lot in advance.
