Oracle Linux 6 Certification for HP small servers

Hi all.
We have been selling small - medium servers and services for our clients. By small i mean servers like HP Proliant series, ranging from ML110 and higher. Also IBMs like X3200 X3400, X3600 and so on .... What we normally do is sell these servers with Oracle Linux, Oracle Database and an Oracle Application we developed. We advise clients to purchase Oracle Support for Linux, which they might or might not take, and Oracle support for the Database.
Normally, we check the OS supported for that Server and if RHEL is supported, we are safe to install Oracle Linux, since, they are suppose to be 100% compatible. We've never had an issue with this ....
To our surprise, we just have an issue with a ML110 G7 Server. Although, RHEL5 is supported, Oracle Linux 5 can not be installed. It fails to recognize disks on the create partition phase of the installation. I could only install OL6 on this box. Unfortunately, this comes with an issue: no Oracle Database release is actually certified to run on that OS.
This situation creates a problem with out current policy.
So to make things short, i'd like to know whether there is a list of certified servers for Oracle Linux, and why if a server is certified on RHEL5 , Oracle Linux 5 can not be installed...
Thanks in advance ....

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hplinuxcert.html will show you which HP systems are HP supported or tested with RHEL and Oracle Linux.
Note also http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/supportmatrix/rhel/exceptions/rhel-exceptions.html which shows minimum supported Updates required. And http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/options-matrix-all.html regarding support for installed options.
Regarding ML110 G7, the minimum required is RHEL 5.6 and RHEL 6.0. Which version of Oracle Linux have you been trying to install?

  • Oracle 11gR2 certification for Oracle Linux 6

    Hello,
According to Oracle documentation, database certification and support for Oracle 11gR2 under Oracle Linux starts with 11.2.0.3.
I was wondering if this might have anything to do with the i386 software prerequisites. Speaking of Oracle 11gR2 x86_64, the need for i386 libraries was removed with 11gR2 11.2.0.2. Or in other words, one can go straight to 11.2.0.2 without the need to install any 32-bit libraries.
Under Oracle Linux 5 x86_64, the "oracle-validated" package triggers the installation of several i386 packages. Under Oracle Linux 6 x86_64, the oracle-rdbms-server-11gr2-preinstall package uses x86_64 only. Under Oracle Linux 6, i386 changed to i686.
For what it's worth, I have installed Oracle 11gR2 database 11.2.0.1 under Oracle Linux 6.1 to 6.3, both x86_64, simply by using the oracle-rdbms-server-11gr2-preinstall package, and so far have not noticed any problems. Is there some information available, why 11.2.0.1 (x86_64) should not be used or is not certified for Oracle Linux 6 (x86_64)?
    Thanks.

I was afraid of that. Since the question is Oracle Linux 6 specific, I thought I'd try my luck here, thinking that if I get an answer, then probably here. Maybe it was not very realistic to get an answer anyway.
For what it's worth. Using "oracle-validated" under Oracle Linux 5, and "oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall" under Oracle Linux 6, I was able to install Oracle 11gR2 11.2.0.1 just fine, both platforms x86_64 and 32-bit. I have not found any operational issues yet and it seems to run perfectly well.
The only trouble I had was with Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.1, and here 11.2.0.3 is indeed required for it to install. I made a custom patch, just a few lines and after that 11.2.0.1, both x86_64 and 32-bit installed just fine and is fully operational.
I'm though I could post the patch. I guess it might make those people happy who do not have access to Oracle support and download 11.2.0.3. The patch will allow them to use the 11gR2 OTN version and install it under Oracle Linux 6. It won't be certified, but it is good enough for the purpose of education.
    I'm closing the thread.

  • Installing Oracle Linux 6 For 11g

I'm downloading Oracle Linux 6,2 64-bit with the single intention to simply install Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition and I've never used or installed Oracle Linux before. I know that in order to install Oracle 11g database, I will need to have some kind of graphic utility like X but I do not need a Desktop Environment like Gnome or KDE (which is not permitted on servers per company policy). Can someone tell me what exactly or which specific options I will need to minimally install Oracle database 11g? I don't want to install the entire DVD content to my server but rather know what packages are required and ONLY install those. I don't know if the Linux installer has a fairly self explanatory / easy to use options based on me using this system as a database server but if anyone can please help, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Sorry everyone but I've retured back from vacation to focus back on getting Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 installed on Oracle Linux 6.2 64-bit. I've got the O.S. up and I thought I selected all the correct / required packages to perform the standard installation using the Universal Installer but it's not working for some reason. I'm unable to forward my 'xclock' session from the database server host to my workstation (Ubuntu 12.04 Linux). When I open a terminal window on my Ubuntu Linux machine and type 'xclock', the application opens w/o any issues. When I SSH into my Oracle database server and attempt to forward the X11 session over to my machine, I get:
    carlos@ghost:~$ ssh -x carlos@oracledb
    carlos@oracledb's password:
    [carlos@oracledb ~]$ xclock
    Error: Can't open display:
    [carlos@oracledb ~]$ logout
Connection to oracledb closed.I obviously have the application 'xclock' and all required dependencies installed but for some reason it doesn't forward from my Oracle server to my workstation so that I can start the installation...

  • Cannot find an Oracle Linux installation for 32 bit machines

Can anyone show me where to find a linux oracle 11g or 10g installation for a 32 bit machine.
The ones I downloaded from oracle are all for x86 64bit machines.
    Thanks

    On following page

    abase/index.html
    this is the link
    http://download.oracle.com/otn/linux/oracle11g/linux_x
86_11gR1_database.zipWhat I actually said is that the link provided is for 64bits linux machines.
When I try running uname -r on my linux bash prompt, I get the i3686 tellin g me that I am running a 32bit machine.
On the other hand, installation guide specifies that we should check the kernel version and system architecture.
I don't think I should continue installation on seeing that I am trying to install a 64bit product on a 32bit system.

  • Oracle 11g certification for PT8.22,8.42,8.45,8.46,8.49,8.50

    Hi,
We support multiple tools at our client site and planning to upgrade oracle 10g to 11gR2.
Are the above Peopletools supported for 11gr2? If anyone has any knowledge or experience please respond.
    Thanks

Yes, 11gR2 is available for HPUX and AIX, have a look on the download page :
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/index.html
For the patches, please, check the Patches&Updates on My Oracle Support (somehow, my connection is hanging onto there).
    Nicolas.
PS: so far, there is no CPU patch for 11gR2 (*Critical Patch Update January 2010 Patch Availability Document for Oracle Products ID 967472.1*).

  • Oracle 11g certification for People tools 8.46 & 8.45??

Are the above people tools Oracle 11g certified??

I'm trying to determine if PS tools 8.44 (HRMS 8.8) is certified on Oracle DB 11gr2. By the looks of things, it appears the latest Oracle DB release certified on tools 8.44 is DB v 9.2.x.x. Am I reading this correct?
Apologies for simplistic questions - I'm new to the PeopleSoft world

  • Is Oracle still actively creating AMIs for Oracle Linux?

    Hi All,
I was wondering if any of you knows if Oracle is still actively creating new Oracle Linux AMIs for Amazon EC2? I can see the most recent one is Oracle Linux 6.1 while we are already at 6.3.
Now that Oracle has announced they are in the IaaS and PaaS business as well, do they stop supplying Amazon AMIs?
    Bart.

I would never deploy the first point release of a major release into production. In my experience, Oracle rolls out 2 "releases" of each major version. The SECOND release tends to be production-ready for shops with serious HA requirements. Usually, this Second release also contains sneak previews of the important features of the next major Version--but these should be considered version 1.0 features and not relied upon. The FIRST release of a major version will contain those important features in a strong form suitable for the vast majority of shops--but it will still have lots of bugs. If you have to bounce your instance even once a month to work around a bug, you aren't getting close to HA.
My advice--the most stable version will always be the terminal release of the last version--currently 9.2.0.6. Similarly, the last point release of R1 will be quite stable. Realistically, 98% of the customer base can live with occasional downtime and bug problems, and will enjoy the new features of the latest software. Even for them, I'd wait for the second point release or higher for production. QA and DEV are different stories--jump on the latest wave and write code using the newest features. But wait for the second point release before going into production. Typically it will be out in a few months and will fix the glaring bugs.

  • 10g AS certifications for Sun

Here is the platform: AMD running Solaris-10 X86-64 OS. I've looked through the certification tables and don't see it listed exactly like this, so I'm thinking it isn't certified, but wanted to check the forums to see if anyone out there can tell me otherwise. I've only found windows and linux certifications for amd.
    Thanks.

    Hi.
Unfortunately, I believe you are correct.
Anyway, have you already tried to install it on this platform. The fact of this "hardware x software" combination not being certified doesn't necessarily means it won't work. But it means you will not have Oracle Support.
I know this is not what you want to read, but I've recently read in SUN site that their servers with solaris are less expensive than using solaris with other hardware.
If you have interest about reading it:
    http://www.sun.com/emrkt/boardroom/newsletter/brazil/0606expertinsight_trad.html
This text was written in portuguese... If you can read something in spanish, you won't have much trouble understanding it.
If you don't have any other box to install OracleAS, then you should try to install it in this server.
    Good Luck.

    Marcos

  • Oracle Linux Laptop

    Hello Guys.
Does anybody know if Oracle Linux suits for desktop? I'd like to try a new Linux OS from Oracle in action and unfortunately I don't have any additional hardware except an old laptop.
    Advise me.

The BIOS and hardware design of a modern x86 based PC's is still antiquated (8259 PIC cascade?). The move from hardware interrupts to software interrupts or implementing software to handle memory addressing are good examples. It is cheaper to develop and test software than hardware, despite the downgrade of performance and reliability as everything needs to go by the CPU and OS. I remember the old PCI bus was meant to be a cross platform standard, including a dynamic BIOS. Unfortunately, PC's did not move along quite well.
I would say that Red Hat Enterprise Linux including all clones are simply not designed for mobile computing and focus on performance and reliability for tested server system configurations. More drivers are are not increasing quality support for a server platform. Linux was a pioneer in the development of a software BIOS and I guess LinuxBIOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coreboot) fit into this concept, but it's nothing really unusual anymore, including MS Windows.
Speaking of MS Windows, it might be irrelevant for any IT newcomer, but I think it is a miracle that it even works the way it does considering all the variations of software and hardware. MS Windows has come a long way, but the most important IT innovations did not come from Microsoft and Intel. I don't know any other business beside IT that has such a silly history in terms of destroying good products and wasting resources, and instead promoting less superior solutions. Some information simply did not arrive. Anyway, different story.

  • R12.1.3 certification for JDK and other products on Oracle Linux 6

    Hello
We are in the process of migrating R12.1.3 from Linux 5.4 (64bit) on physical server to OEL 6.5 (64bit) on Oracle VM.
Currently running IAS 10.1.3.5 , Forms 10.1.2.3,  JDK 1.6_10 on HTTP Server Node and 1.4.2_14-b05 on Developer 10g (Forms/Reports). JRE client is 1.6_24.
The future state is R12.1.3 on OEL 6.5 on Oracle VM with JRE 7.
The plan is to use Rapid Clone as we are already on 10.1.3.5 and DB 11.2.0.3.
The uncertainty is with JDK as the certification on MOS for R12.1.3/OEL 6 indicates minimum version of JDK is 1.6_26.
Should I upgrade to JDK 1.6_26 as a minimum, on the apps tier 10.1.3_HOME and 10.1.2_HOME on Linux 5.4 before cloning to OEL 6.5?  Or can we continue running the current JDK apps tier versions on OEL 6.5 and only upgrade the client to JRE 7,  without updating JDK?
Taking into account the current versions, can I use the pre-build R12.1.3 VM templates on the new hardware and then clone?
Furthermore, I read the following comment on Steven Chan's blog,  it was in June 2012, are these products certified now?
"there is still some unsupported products on OEL6*
Oracle Advanced Supply Chain Planning (MSC)
      Oracle Inventory Optimization (MSR)
      Oracle Constraint Based Optimization (MSO)
      Oracle Work In Process (WIP)
      Oracle Manufacturing Scheduling (WPS)"
    Any suggestions/assistance will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
