Oracle Linux 6 u3 Installation via FTP

There is a need to install OS (Oracle Linux 6.3) via FTP. The installation process started fine, but after I'd finished with partitions layout and hit "next" on the window displaying "boot loader operating system list", error appeared.
the error: "Unable to read package metadata from repository. This maybe due to missing repodata directory. Cannot retrieve repository metadata(repomd.xml) for repository".
Ftp shared folder is OS iso file itself.

What you are trying to accomplish is creating a local mirror of the software distribution. If you can't download from a mirror and you have the install DVD, copy the complete content and structure to a locally hosted HTTP or FTP directory.
As already mentioned, you need to specify the path to the root of the installation from where you can browse the "repodata" and "server" directory.
You can see what the installation is looking for by opening the repodata directory and analyzing "repomod.xml". This will show you the relative path and filename including the primary.sqlite.bz2 file.
Make sure all your files and directories in the installation root have world read and execute privileges (chmod -R 755 /install dir) and make sure your ftp server is setup accordingly providing the right FTP_HOME and permissions. Also, what is your FTP server, does it support Unix filenames or translate them?
You can probably try another machine use FTP to connect to the installation source and see if you can navigate inside the directories and get the files.

I am trying to resolve an Oracle Linux 6.2 (64 bit) installation issue. I selected Oracle Linux server default setup and after the reboot, the X-Window or KDE GUI graphical

  • Oracle Linux 6 installation FAILURE on VMWare virtual machine

I just downloaded OEL 6.0 x64, created a new VMWare virtual machine (I have many VMWare VMs running various flavors of OEL 5) and did an installation. It all seemed to work fine. I was just testing, so I didn't do any customization. It finished, and looked good, just like all the other ones I've done. I clicked "reboot", and it did. Or it tried to.
It did boot from the disk, but after about 15 seconds, it said:
    No root device found
    Boot has failed, sleeping forever.
I retried the installation using a fresh VM, and even let the installer check the whole DVD first. Same result.
Anyone installed OEL 6 to a virtual machine on VMWare ESX?
Any idea what the heck could be wrong?

    The problem is:
The Red Hat compatible kernel includes the vmw_pvscsi driver whereas Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel doesn’t. The kernel that the installer boots first does have the drivers, which is why everything is set up fine until UEK tries to find the root volume. It's an issue we plan to address in an updated kernel.
    For now the workaround is:
When creating a new VM in VSphere, do not pick Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 x86-64 as the OS type but use Oracle Linux 5 x86-64 (or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5). ESX will then expose the LSI logic scsi controller to the OS and the 2.6.32-100.28.* kernel will work.

  • New Oracle Linux 6 installation - ASMLib and EMC Powerpath - is it possible

    Hi everyone,
I would like to ask whether that latest version of Oracle Linux 6 can be used for a new installation (one that will replace Windows) to serve as that basis for Oracle RAC.
The storage is a high-end EMC Clariion.
I want to use the Unbreakable Enterprise Linux 2.
I would like to use EMC Powerpath, but it seems this is not yet available (or at list not present in the current EMC support matrix).
I want to use ASMLib, but if have to use redhat compatible kernel (so that I can use Powerpath), I will not be able to use ASMLib (AFAIK).
Does anybody has experience with this problem? What would you recommend?
I'm putting a list of possile options that I am aware of:
    1. Use OEL5 with redhat compatible kernel (use Powerpath and ASMLib).
    2. Use OEL6 with UEK2 kernel, but don't use Powerpath (use dm-multipath and ASMLib)
    3. Use OEL6 with redhat compatible kernel (use Powerpath and don't use ASMLib, but use udev for persistent device permissions and naming)
    4. Use SLES11 (with Powerpath and ASMLib)
do you have other suggestions? do you have comments on the pros and cons on this options.
Can someone from EMC or Oracle comment on the plans to make Powerpath available for OL6 with UEK2 ?
    Regards,
    Mihail

I could test "OEL6 with RHEL kernel + Powerpath" vs "OEL6 with UEK2 kernel + dm-mpio", but anyway this would not give the answer whether Powerpath is faster or slower than dm-mpio by itself, since the kernels would be different.I wonder how the answer whether EMC Powerpath or DM Multipath is faster can help you? Apparently you cannot use Powerpath with the UEK2 kernel and have a certified system at the same time, at least not at this time. However there is no reason to throw the towel yet. If the use of Powerpath instead of Multipath is so critical, why not using Oracle Linux 5.7, which is certified? If you check the EMC compatibility matrix (esm_by_os), it actually shows some systems including Clariion supported for Oracle Linux 6.2 with UEK kernel. You might want to take a closer look.
Anyway, it doesn't look like you will be able to solve the performance question without doing a real world test in your environment. You have no indication that Oracle Linux 6.3 with DM Mutlipath will give you less performance than RHEL 6.3 with Powerpath. Regarding the information you found, Linux is not Windows.
Powerpath is not free and you have to pay a license, but worse, it will tie your system to a very specific version of the kernel. In case of RHEL 6 or later, it will deny you the use of Oracle specific products and features such as ASMLib, etc. Multipath seems to be the more economic and better solution since you do not have to worry about kernel versions and have the freedom to use whatever Oracle Linux has to offer.
So, do you want to limit your kernel features and options and fix a problem that you don't know even know if it applies and pay money for it?

How do you think an OS gets loaded on a system when it is first built?  Of course it can be installed on a system having no OS.
It's not clear what you have and even less clear how you got there.  Are you saying you stated with a machine running Windows,  then you installed Virtual Box, then used VBox to create a virtual machine, then you tried to install Linux on that virtual machine, and somehow trashed your Windows installation?
    Or something else?

The fact that Oracle Linux 6.6 installed fine, as well as CentOS, makes me wonder about the DVD driver on the Oracle Linux 7.0 image.
I burned the DVD twice and tried 2 different USB DVD drives without success.  Then I decided to try burning the Oracle Linux 7.0 image to a USB stick as described on this Ubuntu site:
How to create a bootable USB stick on OS X | Ubuntu
There are directions on how to create a bootable USB stick on other OS's there too.
Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu
The install worked fine from this.  I did notice a very slow response when I typed the root password when trying to install from the DVD but this worked normal when installing from the USB stick.

You should find all rpms and their right version (as required by installer) onto linux 6 iso.
For some rpms the installer can like higher versions but not for all. For some rpms installer requires the exact version.

  • Oracle Linux 6.0 64 bit instalation problem

    Hi,
I downloaded Oracle Linux 6.0 64 bit from Oracle site. I unpacked it and burned it on dvd, but it can't boot so I can't install it. I could't do it even with virtual machine. I also put disk detection latency to 15 sec so I could give Linux enough time to boot, but it did't help. So any sugestion? :) I have core i7 2600 and Gigabyte UD4 P67 B3, bit I don't think it is a problem.
    Thx

This directory contains image files used during the Oracle Linux 6
    installation process.
The boot.iso file that is sometimes found in the images directory has
been removed for space reasons. It is available as a separate download
from ULN. boot.iso is an ISO 9660 image of a bootable CD-ROM. It is useful
in cases where the CD-ROM installation method is not desired, but the
CD-ROM's boot speed would be an advantage.
To use this image file, burn the file onto CD-R (or CD-RW) media as you
    normally would.
    From Images folder, installation DVD.

"connectstring" is not a valid attribute with Oracle's ODBC driver, so since there is no datasource attribute specified, the app is trying to connect to a local database, and since you don't have one, you get 12560.
To resolve the problem, pass DBQ=      instead of  CONNECTSTRING=

Wrong forum. Your question has nothing to do with Oracle Database Installation. You might try the [url https://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=822] Oracle Linux forum..
When you post there it will be helpful if you will provide some detail on what you actually did and and the result. So far all you've really said is "Here is a picture of a Ford. Why can't I get my Chevy to run?"

    Hi All,
It is noticed that there is no hostname being setup whenever we get the Oralce System Assistant to install Oralce LInux 5.5.  So, is that the correct behaviour for such installation?
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi All,
Thanks for  all your update.  Yes. I am talking about the Oracle System Assistant embedded on-board with every new Oracle Sun x86 server.  In effect, we don't Oracle Linux Anaconda installer ask for the host name when it is kicked off from the Oracle System Assistant.  Howver, I really can't remember the output of the "uname -a" at that time. But it seems to be "noname" .
    Thanks you so much.

    Dear Avi Miller,
I have successfully installed both of servers (VM Server 3.0.2 & VM Manager 3.0.2) as below
+ VM Server 3.0.2 on Dell PowerEdge 1950
+ VM Manager 3.0.2 in OEL 6.1 on Sun Fire X4100M2 Server
Refer to Oracle VM Server 3.0 Document, they recommend to do Discover Oracle VM Servers to VM Manager first of all step then do anything else like Creating a Server Pool so I try to do Discover Oracle VM Servers in many times but still not success.
What I try to do Discover Oracle Servers as below:
After I install both already I start to Discover Oracle VM quickly

  • Oracle Linux and Automatic Installation of Oracle Related Packages

    G'day,
I recently decided to check out Oracle's Unbreakable Linux as I am/was thinking of switching to it for all my company's database deployments. What originally attracted me to Oracle Linux was that I though there would have been a kickstart, package or in the GUI install, a check box to install all of Oracle's dependencies.
When I installed it first, I manually selected a bunch of relevant packages, then installed any missing packages manually via a local YUM repository that I had made. Alas however, Oracle did not install correctly. So, I reinstalled, this time as a full install. Oracle then worked like a charm.
I also noticed, when editing /etc/sysctl.conf and /etc/securetty/limits.conf that these files had basically all ready been configured.
So, my question is, as I have had no luck using the search functionality here, is anyone aware of a kickstart argument, or an Oracle package that will install and in turn by way of dependencies, install all the necessary Oracle bits and pieces? Ideally, I would like to do this by way of kickstart as to automate as much of the process as possible.
If I can do this, then with some further testing, I will make the switch to Oracle's Linux for our Oracle deployments.
    Cheers,
    Conor

Yes, there is a great package called oracle-validated that is available that will pre-configured Oracle Enterprise Linux for installation using the Oracle Universal Installer. It ensures that things like sysctl.conf are all correct.
It should be available in the base download, so you can test it out. :)

  • New installation woes - SQLDeveloper on Oracle Linux x64 and Oracle 11g XE

Note that as an experienced Oracle developer in enterprise environments running MS Windows OS, I am familiar with SQLDeveloper for Windows. I don't have a lot of experience with Linux however. I don't find it intimidating, I just don't have a lot of accumulated knowledge.
I have recently been trying to set up a development environment on my Windows7 Professional x64 laptop.
    1. Installed Oracle VBox
    2. Installed Oracle Linux 5.2 inside the VBox (because Oracle 11g XE is not certified on 64 bit Windows, needed to go with a Linux OS)
    3. Installed Oracle DB 11.2 XE
    4. Installed JDK as instructed in the SQLDeveloper release notes for Linux x64
    5. Installed SQLDeveloper 3.1.07.42-1
No apparent issues with any of the installations.
Problem : I can run SQL Plus from the command line, but when I click on the icon for SQLDeveloper, nothing happens. No error messages, nothing else.
Question #1 : Unsure how to debug/troubleshoot this. Will read through the installation and release notes for SQLDeveloper, but any suggestions would be welcome.
Question #2 : Could this be due to an issue with the JDK installation? It appeared to be successful (no obvious issues) but I can't see anything in the Oracle Linux menu system that tells me the JDK was installed successfully. How can I confirm that the JDK installation was successful?

The Linux x64 version of SQLDeveloper doesn't come bundled with JDK. There is a version of JDK recommended, with an advisory to install it before installing SQLDeveloper. This I did, with apparent success. I guess I'll have to install the JDK again and check my Java versions afterwards. Thanks.
    >
I don't know what JDK you downloaded since you didn't say. What version was it? Post the link.
I find it hard to believe that the JDK version recommended was 1.4.2 since that is an ANCIENT version of Java, you have to hunt to even find it for download and most importantly the sql developer main download page clearly announces what version of Java is needed.

    JDK Support
Oracle SQL Developer 3.1 is shipped with JDK1.6.0_11. However, you can connect to and use any JDK 1.6.0_11 or above. To use an existing JDK, download the zip files listed below "with JDK already installed."
    >
As you can see you need JDK 1.6.0_11 or above.
If the version you say was recommended was actually 1.4.2 then that is an error; post the details so the developers can get that error fixed.
I don't know what is on your system and can only go by the information you provide
    >
    4. Installed JDK as instructed in the SQLDeveloper release notes for Linux x64
    java version "1.4.2"
    >
You either downloaded version 1.4.2, which seems unlikely, or your Linux included 1.4.2 and it is being used when you try to launch sql developer.
Perhaps your system now has multiple versions of Java on it but the version being used by sql developer is the wrong one. If so that is the issue you need to resolve.
