Oracle Linux 7 Desktop Refreshes Periodically

Hi:
I have a CentOs 6.6 system (lots of CPUS, lots of RAM) running VirtualBox.  Some time ago I had installed a VM from an Oracle Developer Day which had Oracle Linux 6 on it along with Oracle 12c DB, SQL Developer, etc.  That's been running fine.  I noticed a new VM that was Oracle Linux 7 and Oracle DB 12c, SQL Developer etc. so I got that image and imported it, creating a new Oracle Linux 7 VM.
It comes up fine but every few minutes it does a refresh of some kind involving the entire desktop.  Everything freezes for a few seconds, then the red image of the background turns to black (but I still see all the icons), then entire screen goes gray (no icons), and usually things come back.  Usually.  But sometimes I am greeted with "Oh no!  Something has gone wrong...and the system can't recover".  The machine isn't dead but I have to log in again and my sessions are gone.
I've only had the machine up for a half hour or so, so I don't know if it is certain activity that is driving the refresh or what. This is a major pain.  Is this a known issue?  How do I get rid of it?
Thanks
P.S. The VM image in question can be found here.

Hi Dude!  Thanks for replying.
Resources are NOT an issue. The host has 18 Xeon E5-2650 CPUs and 128G or so of RAM   The guest is getting 6 cores and 12G of RAM.
Here are some details as to the VM properties:
Oracle DB Dev VM:
Base Memory: 12154MB
Processors: 6
Enable I/O APIC
Enable Hardware Clock in UTC Time
Enable PAE/NX
Enable VT-x/AMD-V
Enable Nested Paging
No Video acceleration
Boot up shows: Fast TSC Callibration Fails
Could giving this VM 6 cores be a problem?  I don't know how Oracle DB handles that if the VM was created using 1 core and I've upped it to 6.  Does it not use them all?  Does it get confused?
I looked at /var/log/message and there are two things.  It's full of problems regarding time.
Jan  1 14:46:57 localhost abrt-server: Missing file: time
Jan  1 14:46:57 localhost abrt-server: Unlocked '/var/tmp/abrt/ccpp-2014-08-15-14:26:33-1953/.lock' (no or corrupted 'time' file)
I think I mentioned in the first post that on startup it always has an error about the time.  It shows Fast TSC calibration failed.
But I think that's a general RedHat7/CentOs7 guest thing from what I have read and it isn't critical and certainly shouldn't cause this problem.
The other thing I noticed in the message log around the time of the last crash is a line as follows:
Jan  1 14:26:32 localhost dbus[805]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit'
Jan  1 14:28:26 localhost kernel: gnome-shell[3261]: segfault at 3ccea774 ip 00007f4392fa8690 sp 00007f43b8deb770 err
or 4
Jan  1 14:28:28 localhost abrt-hook-ccpp: Saved core dump of pid 3240 (/usr/bin/gnome-shell) to /var/tmp/abrt/ccpp-20
15-01-01-14:28:26-3240 (407973888 bytes)
Jan  1 14:28:29 localhost abrt-server: Missing file: time
Jan  1 14:28:29 localhost abrt-server: Unlocked '/var/tmp/abrt/ccpp-2014-07-31-22:08:30-1470/.lock' (no or corrupted
'time' file)
So something (gnome related?) died but I don't see a hint as to why.  I didn't see anything in the Xorg file that stood out.
FWIW, it's happening a bit less since I did a yum update on the machine.

Your problem description is very vague. I suggest you try the following:
Press any key when the system starts to enter the Grub boot menu.
Press the letter 'e' and press the down arrow key to move the cursor to the kernel line.
Press the letter 'e' again and move the cursor to the left until you can remove "rhgb quit" with the delete key.
Press the Return or Enter key and finally 'b' to boot the system.
Then report at which point the startup process stops and what is displayed on the screen.hey, tks for the reply. The problem is the version of my oracle VM . I decided to try to use the latest one and use the oracle linux server 6.2 image together and it can now boot into my desktop gui with addtionGuest Installed.

Since Oracle Linux is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you can use and search "RHEL books". There should some.

  • How to compile Oracle Linux source?

I accidentally downloaded source DVD "Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 source - DVD" instead of installable ISO image. Is there anyway I can compile it to make bootable ISO image?
I tried to search this forum as well as other places but couldn't find any information hence thought of opening a thread before I proceed to download correct file which will again take 10+ hrs with my Internet speed :(
Any help is highly appreciated. Also I need to know which packages are required to be installed for compiling the source if at all that is possible. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop.
Thanks in advance for any help and hope to get a reply soon :) I need to urgently install Oracle 11gR2 on it.

While browsing the forum for any possible solution I came to a thread that discuss installation of a package oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall. When searched through search engine I came to know about recent certification Oracle 11gR2 on Oracle Linux 6, here is the link https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/announcing_oracle_database_11g_r2
    https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/announcing_oracle_database_11g_r2
Thing is I already have Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 (the latest) installed on my machine in dual boot mode so I dropped the idea of installing version 5.2. As per the documentation 11gR2 was not certified earlier on Linux 6.2 so I thought of installing 5.2 but it is not necessary now.
I would still appreciate if someone could answer my question just for knowing the procedure compiling source. May be it can help someone else trying to achieve this.
I have another couple of important questions and need guidance from the experts over here. I am not sure if it is appropriate to open a new thread but for now I am posting them here.
Before proceeding here are my environment details:
Machine: x86 32 bit with 2 GB RAM/250 GB HD.
OS: Kubuntu 11.10 Desktop and Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 in dual boot mode.
Here are my partition details for your reference but as I am planning to do the installation from the scratch following new ideal scheme you can jump to last paragraph following the line "*********************************" for my questions.
Unfortunately my partition plan went wrong and here is what I have now:
    Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders, total 488397168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x3d5ba9e1
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 2048 1002047 500000 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 151525080 361253654 104864287+ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
    /dev/sda4 1003518 151001087 74998785 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 1003520 7002111 2999296 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda6 7004160 11001855 1998848 83 Linux
    /dev/sda7 11003904 51001343 19998720 83 Linux
    /dev/sda8 51003392 110041087 29518848 83 Linux
Partition table entries are not in disk order
/dev/sda1 here is /tmp, /dev/sda2 is my data partition, I have separate /home / (root) partition for Kubuntu and remianing around 20 GB in extended partition is used for Oracle Linux 6.2 with default Oracle suggested LVM partition. I also have separate /boot for Kubuntu and I chose not to install grub while installing Oracle Linux. I later modified grub.cfg to add entries for Oracle Linux and now I can boot both OSs successfully.
My issue now is I cannot extend 20 GB space (in extended partition) that I have given to Oracle though I have around 40 GB space available. This is because I alreay have 4 primary partitions (one for /boot others for "data" and one extended partition). So I have to make primary partition out of free space and install Oracle in a single partition without following recommended partition layout scheme.
Now I want to do the installation of both the OS from the scratch and really need an advice on partition layout scheme. Here is summary of what I wan to achieve:
    1. Keep the "data" partition (primary) intact and carve an ideal partition layout for both the OS with separate /boot, /tmp, /home, swap (and may be for /usr???). Also may be I can share swap?
    2. How do I go about using LVM and is it recommended for this case? What would be ideal locations for each partitions and sizes? I already used 100 GB for "data" so now I want to keep 60 GB for Oracle Linux (and Oracle DB for which I will again make few sub-partitions) and remaining will be for Kubuntu.
Well, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions but since I can see very knowlegeable top contributors here that are willing to help novice users I thought of posting these questions.
I would really really appreciate if someone can provide me rough draft of partition scheme in my case considering the sub-partitions needed for Oracle DB. I went thorugh number of forums and documentations to come up with solutuion and finally thought of getting help after much confusion.
I really need to carefully plan this time because it's third time I am doing reinstallation from the scratch because of poor plan I followed previously.
Thank you very much in advance and please let me know in case more information is needed from my side.
    Regards,
    Ramesh

I accidentally downloaded source DVD "Oracle Linux Release 5 Update 2 source - DVD" instead of installable ISO image. Is there anyway I can compile it to make bootable ISO image?Google will be your best friend for such a question, for instance, "Creating a Custom centos Linux bootable ISO Image". There is no need to duplicate the effort. I recommend you download the correct installation DVD, e.g. 5.8
Thing is I already have Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 (the latest) installed on my machine in dual boot mode so I dropped the idea of installing version 5.2. As per the documentation 11gR2 was not certified earlier on Linux 6.2 so I thought of installing 5.2 but it is not necessary now.So you don't need to install 5.2 anymore, but you want the information how to compile a installation DVD from the 5.2 source anyway?!
I have another couple of important questions and need guidance from the experts over here. I am not sure if it is appropriate to open a new thread but for now I am posting them here.Questions may be important for you, but not necessarily for others. No one will complain if you create a new thread for particular questions or subjects. It is better to separate your topics and questions rather than creating a multi-mega thread, which does little to help anyone else but you. It means more work on your end, but it will be easier for anyone to participate or answer your questions, and it will allow you to better award answers.
Regarding your partitioning questions: It is generally difficult to address such topics in a forum. You are asking for a book of information. My advice is to drop the old fashioned concepts of dual or triple boot options and install Oracle VirtualBox instead. It will make all of these questions obsolete and you can use whatever defaults when installing your virtual machine guest OS. Its a far more superior way of dealing with multiple operating systems on one and the same computer.
I am using Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop.
I need to urgently install Oracle 11gR2 on it.For what it's worth, if you can combine the two source below you should be able to install and run 11gR2 on Ubuntu 11.10.
Install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (64-bit) Howto
Install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (64-bit) Howto
Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition on Linux Ubuntu 11.10 howto
Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition on Linux Ubuntu 11.10 howto
    However, check out VirtualBox.

I want to upgrade my OS from official repository on Primary and Standby Servers. And I have a question:
Will I have a problem with my RDBMS after upgrade OS (e.g. statuses in dba_registry will become INVALID)?

    It's Ok.
    Now I have:
    $ cat /etc/issue
    Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
    No any problem.

Why is your "requirement" to install in graphical mode?  Once you are past the installation itself, the only thing that buys you is that your server will have been configured to boot up to runlevel 5, running a graphical desktop (gnome or kde, I forget which).  And what does THAT buy you on a server?
I do not run ANY of my Linux servers "in graphical mode" -- running a graphical desktop.  Nor did I run a graphical desktop when I had Solaris, AIX, or HP-UX servers.

is oracle linux can be install on laptop.

My advice to you is, since you have established such a reputation on this board, on issues that you don't have any knowledge or don't feel comfortable about, please just keep quiet. I don't think your job is to answer every question that has been posted on this board. Recklessly, or worse, knowingly, providing a wrong answer is much worse than no answer at all. These are serious personal accusations. Are you trying to make some noise to create some visibility for yourself? Please don't steal any of my limelight! ;-)
Personally, I don't particularly appreciiate many of your responses to some of the questions that I posted. To me, your responses are rude, idiotic (and insults to my intelligence)!Sorry, I have no idea what makes you so upset. Are you just making this up? What questions and answers are you taking about?
Are you referring to this post: Ralink RT5390 Does Not Work on the UEK Kernel
May I quote/remind you of your own posting:
We installed OL6.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 on a new Asus X45A notebook. It has a Ralink RT5390 wireless card. With Ubuntu, both wifi and video work flawlessly. However, the wifi driver (from elrepo) does not work for the the uek kernel (2.6.39). While the wifi driver works when boot into the RHEL kernel (2.6.32), it created an "even bigger problem" in that the video starts at about 1/10 from the left edge of the screen.
But again, please no one be fooled by my overly optimistic and simplistic comments*. The reality is, I am glad OL6 desktop works at all.
    * For example, I actually installed OL6 on 4 notebooks, one of them "does not work" because I couldn't dim the screen. I did not intend to lie, but subconsciously, I somewhat forgot that there was this failed case.
So what are you really trying to tell us/me here?
I think you have shot yourself in the foot here. I'm afraid the best I can offer to you is to remove my response if you remove your post.

  • Compiling VMtools on Oracle Linux 6.2 gives errors

I am trying to compile the vmtools on a Oracle Linux 6.2 VMware installation. I'm getting strange compilation errors on all the vmtools. Log pasted below.
I have found thread VMware Tools and Oracle Linux Howto and followed the items in there with no help and no change.
yum -y install kernel-headers is all up to date
yum -y install kernel-devel is all up to date
Here are the issues I see:
    1. Compiling the shared folder says linux/smp_lock.h does not exist, and then fails with SPIN_LOCK_UNLOCKED undeclared and unknow field `get_sb'
    2. The network device driver fails in vmxnet.c
    3. The vmblock module fails in dentry.c
    4. The communication service fails in vmci_drv.c
    5. The VM communication interface fails in vmci_drv.c
    6. The X configuration is skipped because there are "no drivers for X.ora version: 7.9.6" (see the bottom of the log below).

The filesystem driver (vmhgfs module) is used only for the shared folder
feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
    independently of this feature.
If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.

You can now run VMware Tools by invoking the following command:
"/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox" during an X server session.
To enable advanced X features (e.g., guest resolution fit, drag and drop, and
file and text copy/paste), you will need to do one (or more) of the following:
    1. Manually start /usr/bin/vmware-user
    2. Log out and log back into your desktop session; and,
    3. Restart your X session.

    Actually, I did exactly that:
    yum -y install gcc
    yum -y install kernel-uek-devel-`uname -r`
    yum -y install kernel-uek-headers-`uname -r`
The headers with the uname gave an error that the headers do not exist. The others ran fine.
    I did:
    yum -y install kernel-uek-headers
    and that worked.
However, NONE of this changed the errors - they were exactly the same before and after. The problem is still not resolved.
However, I did try a different approach. I found the VMware Operating System Packages (OSPs) through the following link: http://www.vmware.com/download/packages.html. I installed that, and it seemed to work fine.
The problem that we had, which was the original reason why I wanted to have the VMware tools, was that the disk was sized too small and I thought with the tools we could resize the disk. It didn't work, we could not edit the size in the VMware console. So we ended up blowing away that VM and are in the process of recreating it at a larger size. I'll take a snapshot of the state before the OSP install so I can test the compile version in case someone posts something useful here.

  • Oracle Linux 6 - stuck on Welcome Setup Screen, black screen on CTRL+ALT+F*

    Oracle Linux 6 DVD x64.
Installed fine. I selected gnome for UI + all dev packages as I will be doing some dev work on the box.
After install it boots okay and the Welcome setup screen shows up. It allows me to setup connection to ULN, create a user, enable kdump etc. These functions work fine, but right after I finish setting it all up (i.e. the last setting I see is the kdump enable/disable screen), the box goes into limbo state after pressing [Finish] button.
The screen turns black and that's it.
Also when I tried to switch from the Welcome setup screen to a terminal mode, i.e. by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (tried ...+F2 also) the box gets stuck too. There is no way to go back to the X session, i.e. CTRL+ALT+F6 (F7, F8). It is just stuck on the black screen.
    Here's some specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P8H67-M Pro (with B3 revision of Sandy Bridge)
    CPU: Intel I5-2500 (VPRO) (BX80623I52500)
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB (compatible with m/b + run memtest86 for hours without error)
Video: using built in Intel HD (could this be the issue?)
After re-boot I'm back to Welcome setup screen.
    Notes:
    1. Boots fine if 'singleuser' is appended to the kernel boot line in GRUB, but that's not the point. I would like to run UI.
    2. I have tried removing 'rhgb' and 'quiet' kernel boot parameters to no avail. I have actually stripped the kernel boot line in GRUB down to 'ro' and that would not help either.
    3. Ubuntu 10.10 x64 runs fine.
    4. Windows 7 x64 runs fine.

You may have a hardware or system bios issue in combination with the existing drivers. Have you checked the vendors home page for your system? What clues exit in the log files in /var/log?
It sounds like you are using a Latop. Oracle Linux, like RHEL is not designed for desktop and mobile computers. Installation success will depend on your hardware compatibility, but you will very likely be missing appropriate drivers for wireless, video and power management.
If Enterprise Linux is a requirement and you are not using it as the primary OS, or if the computer hardware lacks support, how about installing Oracle Virtualbox and install Linux as a guest OS - I'm pretty sure this should work.

  • Someone can help me to setup Oracle linux 6.0

I've download oracle linux 6.0 ISO to setup in my VM workstation, but when the setup progress boot up, I can't find any GUI setup director in my screen.
I chosen install or upgrade existing system item, and I chose language, timezone,etc..... but it still not lead to a GUI installation director, what's up!! is it my version issue or other??
bty, someone can give me a link to download other version??

When you select the "install or upgrade existing system" option, there will be a sub-screen where you can select software and enable additional repositories. There will be options like "basic server" (default), Desktop, Software Development Workstation, etc. Leave the default, but select the "Customize now" button to add the Desktop packages including Gnome and X-windows.

  • Oracle linux 6.3: (yum update) [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18

    Hi all,
I installed yesterday Oracle Linux 6.3 in the first time and when I tried to do yum update I got the following error:
    [root@ole6 ~]# yum update
    Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security
http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18 - "transfer closed with 1639799 bytes remaining to read"
    Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from ol6_latest: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks in advanced.

    Hi Avi,
Thanks for your reply. as I said this is my first time installing Linux so not all the terms are clear to me.
    I installed OL6.3 through Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.18.
anyway, I did what you recomanded and it's still not working:
    [root@ole6 ~]# yum clean all
    Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security
    Cleaning repos: ol6_UEK_latest ol6_latest
    Cleaning up Everything
    [root@ole6 ~]# yum update
    Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security

    ol6_UEK_latest/primary | 2.3 MB 00:10

    ol6_latest | 1.4 kB 00:00

    Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from ol6_latest: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
when I tried to download http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz
by IE of my host (Windows) I succeed but when i tried to do the same through Firefox of the virtual machine the download stopped after approximally 15MB which is similar to what happened with the PYCURL ERROR 18 above.
Are there any configuration I need to set in my linux installation or maybe in the oracle virtualbox setting?
    Thanx,
    Yosi
