Oracle Linux Security Audit
Dear All,
We have installed oracle Linux 6 in one of our server and we are running Oracle EBS R12.2 running on that server. last couple of days we are getting huge performance impact on that server. From the initial level of investigation the top command shows more than 300% CPU utilized by some unknown command which is initiate by super user. For this we have raised SR with oracle and they have said it seems to be a malware and ask us to do some security audit on the impacted server.
can anyone please suggest us, is there any security audit tool available in oracle site to identify the malware and remove from the server?
It would be very helpful for us...

Venkatesh V

Oracle Linux Patching/Updates Impact on Oracle Database
I have several questions regarding Oracle Linux patching and its impact on Oracle Database.
3 node Cluster
Operating System: Oracle Linux Release 5 update 2
Kernel: 2.6.18-92.1.22.0.1.el5 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Grid Infrastructure: Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.2)
Database: Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition (11.2.0.2) with RAC option
ASM with ASMLib is being used for Data and FRA.
*1)* Given your at Oracle Linux Release 5 update 2, will applying only Security Patches require any changes to ASMLib, Oracle Grid Infrastructure and/or Oracle Database (software binaries, configuration etc.)?
*2)* Given your at Oracle Linux Release 5 update 2, will applying Bug Fixes and Security Patches to Oracle Linux 5 update 2 require any changes to ASMLib, Oracle Grid Infrastructure and/or Oracle Database (software binaries, configuration etc.)?
*3)* Given your updating from Oracle Linux Release 5 update 2 to Oracle Linux Release 5 update 8, will this require any changes to ASMLib, Oracle Grid Infrastructure and/or Oracle Database (software binaries, configuration etc.)?
I would most whole heartedly appreciate if someone could answer the specific questions asked, inline if possible. Our System Administrator is preparing to perform some patching and as the DBA I'd like to be certain what changes I need to prepare for? I also have a single instance database setup with Oracle Restart. I don't know if this impacts the answers above.
Thanks in advance. How do you plan to apply Oracle Linux security patches? As far as I'm aware the yum security plug-in does not work with the Oracle public yum repository and there is no really feasible way to automate and determine security related patches only, unless you setup Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control (11g) or Cloud (12c) and have a subscription to Oracle ULN.
If you upgrade your Oracle Linux to the latest available version using the public yum repository, all patches, including errata will be applied. You cannot apply patches and stay on a specific release version unless you have a subscription and appropriate yum repository access.
As far as I'm aware there are no changes required to your Oracle database or ASM setup and configuration when updating the OS, provided the version of the Oracle database is supported for the specific OS version (ASM features like ADVM/ACFS are kernel version depending). Upgrading from one major release to another, such as upgrading Oracle Linux 5 to Oracle Linux 6 is not supported and will require upgrading the Oracle Database to 11.2.0.3. You can check the Oracle database certification matrix to determine which Oracle database release version is required for which OS version http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/relnotes.112/e23558/toc.htm
The relinking of Oracle Database binaries is a common practice when updating the OS. I do not think it is necessary under Linux. Oracle binaries are typically standalone applications, or use Oracle provided libraries, or in some cases use OS shared libraries, which does not require relinking of Oracle binaries. Upgrading the Oracle database software of course requires relinking.

Looking for different audit events in Oracle Linux
Hi,
I am looking for different audit events in Oracle Linux. I did lot of googling but could not find anything relevant. Can you please share some doc/info if you have.
Thanks,
RaviYou can probably spent all day searching in https://linux.oracle.com/documentation/ or http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/index.html for information about this topic. Finding relevant information appears to be difficult.
The information you are looking for is about configuring the Linux Audit subsystem. There are some rules examples in /usr/share/doc/audit*
I found the following link in Google that seems to provide a reasonable overview:

Oracle Security Audit Advisory Q2
Hi All,
My boss give me the security audit check, review guidelines from Oracle.
He wants me to validate it with our existing PROD database setup.
Have you done this security check in your PROD databases?
1.
1.1.1 Ensure the following are not installed by default
1.1.1.1 Spatial
1.1.1.2 OLAP
1.1.1.3 Data Mining
1.1.1.4 Real Application Testing
1.1.2 Do not install sample schemas
How do I know if they were installed by defualt? And how do I deinstall them?
2.
1.1 Disallow remote OS authentication
Does this mean I can allow local OS authentication?
By the way, we have an issue of hiding the passwords in batch job scripts.
And I suggested to the security officer to use the OS authentication ( I mean local)
But he disapproved it because for the reason mentioned item above.
So, can I reason with him that he misunderstood it?
Thanks,
zxyThanks Justin Sir, your ideas has been so sensible.
The docs Im referring to is > ORACLE-BASE - OS Authentication
I am sure the IT security officer is just referring the guidelines as he is not good in oracle as he is a network guy.
One thing he insist is, the batch operator who handles running of batch scripts every night must not have access to the database? or he/she has no database login?
What he means is in OS Aix he has only "oper01" login id, but it does not have a counterpart of "oper01" in the database. So he will run batch scripts the has connection
to "appadmin" database user, and the the password for this db userid is hidden or encrypted. Of which I suggest to be identified externally.
Can this setup be done for security compliance? I mean can an operator run a batch job that is connecting to the database of which he does not know what userid&password is,
and can not be seen in the shell script even if he opens it? I know if it is a compiled perl It is possible. But using perl for batch need deep expertise.
Can you share me how do u secure your prod database from operators that handles the batch jobs?
Thanks a lot -

Security Audit files (.AUD) for GRC Action usage
Good Day
I need some advise regarding the security audit files for GRC on the HR System.
Our basis team is concerned that the security audit files are filling up the file system in the HR system. I assume these are for Action Usage.
I would like to get a view of what other companies are doing to sort this out.
Can these .AUD files be deleted or what?
Your advise would highly be appreciated.
Regards
Mustafayour question has nothing to do with Oracle. Maybe that SAP on Linux is the better forum for it.

as you see all checks passed OK, but the whole install failed. What could be wrong? And what is XML parser init: error 54?

Oracle linux 6.3: (yum update) [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18
Hi all,
I installed yesterday Oracle Linux 6.3 in the first time and when I tried to do yum update I got the following error:
[root@ole6 ~]# yum update
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security
http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18 - "transfer closed with 1639799 bytes remaining to read"
Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from ol6_latest: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
How can I solve this problem?
Thanks in advanced.Hi Avi,
Thanks for your reply. as I said this is my first time installing Linux so not all the terms are clear to me.
I installed OL6.3 through Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.18.
anyway, I did what you recomanded and it's still not working:
[root@ole6 ~]# yum clean all
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security
Cleaning repos: ol6_UEK_latest ol6_latest
Cleaning up Everything
[root@ole6 ~]# yum update

http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18 - "transfer closed with 1459575 bytes remaining to read"
Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from ol6_latest: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
when I tried to download http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz
by IE of my host (Windows) I succeed but when i tried to do the same through Firefox of the virtual machine the download stopped after approximally 15MB which is similar to what happened with the PYCURL ERROR 18 above.
Are there any configuration I need to set in my linux installation or maybe in the oracle virtualbox setting?
Thanx,

How to Install Weblogic on oracle linux 6 without GUI?
thanks. You could use the X Forwarding solution provided by Dude!. However if you like to install in console mode, which is simple as the GUI installation, except that you would have to type the values yourself, like middleware home and Java home and so on.
Here's a sample on one of our test machines, although we use Solaris, but it's pretty much the same on Linux too:
java -jar -d64 wls1036_generic.jar
connect /tmp/.X11-unix/X0: Connection refused
Unable to instantiate GUI, defaulting to console mode.

CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-7169 Patch Availability Document for Oracle Linux
Hi,
Can you suggest from where we need to download bash rpm for OEL 6 :-
bash-4.1.2-15.el6_5.2.x86_64.rpm
bash-doc-4.1.2-15.el6_5.2.x86_64.rpm
Thanks in Advance !!
MukeshFirst see the document I linked about creating a local yum mirror (How to Create a Local Yum Repository for Oracle Linux). I very strongly recommend setting this up so your systems can get other updates besides bash.
The individual RPMs can be found at Index of /repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/x86_64/ -- but I cannot stress the importance of updating entire systems rather than just bash. If you are not updating your systems periodically, bash is just one of your worries (as you're undoubtedly vulnerable to hundreds of other exploits in other packages besides Shellshock). Please set up an update repository and use it.
Patching only the vulnerabilities you see in the news is equivalent to locking your home's front door, but leaving the security alarm disconnected and the back door held open with a doorstop. You need all the updates, not just bash. -

It tells me that you perhaps tried to install the software before finding or following the instructions. If you check the fuse-ntfs-3g package of your output, it belongs to el5, not el6.
I suggest to check /etc/yum.repos.d directory. It seems you have enabled or installed the wrong yum software repository from the rpmforge source.
To solve your problem, perhaps the following will work:
su - root
yum remove rpmforge-release
cd /etc/yum.repos.d
tar -cf backup.tar ./* --remove-files
wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo
wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm
rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm
yum install fuse fuse-ntfs-3gThe following does not seem absolutely necessary, but might be a good idea:
Once you installed the rpmforge-release package you should be able to use:
yum update rpmforge-release

Windows 2008 R2 ODBC connect to Oracle Linux with 11g db
Hi
i installed a fresh oracle linux and installes 11.2.0 database server. the server works fine but i have a proplem to connect to the database from a windows 2008 r2
client. For the client connection i installed the oracle instantclient on the windows system. Now i want to configure the system dsn to connect to the oracle
server like this
data source description: vSphere 64
description: ----
TNS Service Name: VCDB
user id: system
then i go to TEST connection
Service Name: VCDB
user name: system
Password: mypassword
so i copied the tnsnames.ora from the server to the client
then i get
ora-12504 tns listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT-DATA
here´s my tnsnames.ora from the client
VCDB =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 172.31.98.173)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = vcdb.vmware)
i tested serveral config´s but nothing works. I can ping the server and also i cn telnet the server on port 1521. The listener on the server works fine

The command completed successfully
but it´s not possible to create a connection to the server. My enviroment variables are this
ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1
ORACLE_HOSTNAME=vc-db1.mydomain
ORACLE_SID=vcdb
ORACLE_TERM=xterm
so i think on the server site everything is correct. How could i establish a connection from the windows client
to the linux database server. Or is ODBC the wrong method for this?
Kind regards
ACID25
Edited by: 796038 on 20.09.2010 12:12"connectstring" is not a valid attribute with Oracle's ODBC driver, so since there is no datasource attribute specified, the app is trying to connect to a local database, and since you don't have one, you get 12560.
To resolve the problem, pass DBQ= instead of CONNECTSTRING=

I'm running Oracle Linux 6.3.
I've spent hours searching for any missing libraries and installed all the ones that are pre-requisites.
Has anyone seen these errors before installing Oracle 10.2 on Oracle Linux 6.3 64 bit?
Oracle 11.2 has installed without problem.
Edited by: SamM2 on Nov 12, 2012 11:07 PMHi,
some similar problem.
libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Hope that helps.
