Oracle Linux vs. redhat 5.2 - Which one do I go with????

Which one should it be? Can anyone shed some light on this decision?
Your thoughts...
-Rob

The light in which I see this is much like segio's:
RHEL & OEL are build from the same source, and will be copies of each other (remember the goal of OEL is to remain in binary and source compatible with RHEL)
I want to add another version of RHEL, CentOS to this discussion.
If you want enterprise grade support, RHEL and OEL are clearly the choices. The real choice between RHEL and OEL is where you want your support to come from. There's no such thing as better in this area.
If you want to be able to update your linux install without a paid support contract, take a look at centos. It is very convenient to have a RHEL compatible linux version, with yum working out of the box, and have updates and the ability to install other packages from repositories on the internet.

I think 6.2 is easier, just follow read me instruction, on redhat 7.0 you must run patch to downgrade glibc from 2.2 to 2.1

    Hi Experts,
Please tell me Which one is better EP with ABAP or EP with Java for learning and useful in USA?

What programming background do you already have?  You should match up the flavor of Web Dynpro that matches the skill sets you already have?  Do you have ERP or other Business Suite experience already?  If so you will find that WDA is often used in conjunction with the Business Suite and WDJ used for composites.  So consider where your business domain experience and knowledge lies and support that as well.

  • With multiple Oracle Clients how do you know which one ADO is using

Currently using Oracle client 8.1.7 to connect to a 10g database with the following connection string.
    Driver={Microsoft ODBC for Oracle}; CONNECTSTRING=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=127.0.0.1)(PORT=10001))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=Falcon2))); uid=Falcon;pwd=*******;"
If I add a second, newer client, how do I tell ADO to use the newer client?

  • Which one should i go with?

alright so i tried out my friends iphone and i gotta say its pretty stinkin sweet and im thinkin abt gettin one around christmas but i see that there is 2 different memory capacities the 4 and 8 GB. so which one is better. i have and ipod (30GB) so i dont think i need too much as far as music goes but i just want some opinions on this.

At Christmas time I'd say it will probably be the 8 or nothing. Although right now, you can probably still get your hands on a 4. They're only available through the Online store, and maybe some Apple stores. Although I don't think you'll have much luck with them. The online store sells the 4 at $299.

There are various home grown lists out there, none of which gives you a CERTAIN assurance that any particular drive will work. The only CERTAIN disk that will work is the one that is embedded in Time Capsule. Alternatively, if you have a Fry's Electronics store close, you can just pick a drive, try it out and return it if it doesn't work, by simply saying "it doesn't work with my system".

  • Oracle in RHEL 5. Which one to learn first? Linux or Oracle?

My office uses Oracle Database in RHEL 5. Which one should I master first to be a qualified DBA? the Linux or Oracle? If the answer's Linux, where can I find Linux Tutorial for Dummies since I've never handled Linux in my life before. thanks

    Both.
Best way to start is install a VM on your computer and download a Live distribution (Ubuntu, Fedora Core, etc...), install it. While you are playing around with linux in your VM, install oracle on your windows system and start playing around there. The only real difference you will encounter when playing around with the basics of oracle is the path reference to files. It may seem hard to get started but once have gotten to the point where you know enough to install oracle under linux (install apps via YUM or RPM, change configuration, install other daemons or services; IE: postfix, samba, smtp, etc) and know about creating users, creating tablespaces, creating tables/procedures/packages, altering system parameters, creating database links, etc...you will be on your way.
However becoming a DBA is not as simple as just knowing about Linux and Oracle. Since you have not indicated what you do know about this area I will assume a few things. First off when you start working as a DBA, you may not be just running Oracle on Linux, you may be running oracle on HP-UX, AIX, Linux, Solaris, Windows. Plus you will also be expected to know about writing quieries and optimizing queries. There is no magic settings that make databases run fast, you have to know about how they work, how queires are executed by the sql parser (this is where the real performance gains are).
One thing that I have been constantly expected to know (with detail) is oracle licensing. This is a nightmare, and it takes a while to learn about how all the licensing works so you can give advise for new projects that want to use certain technologies from oracle. This is very daunting at first, but as you learn about everything and become more comfortable about using and knowing all of this stuff it will become second nature to you. If you know DBA's (work colleagues or friends) talk to them, get them to show you, you will learn a lot more in less time than learning by yourself.

  • Oracle Linux 6.4 installs, runs, and manual shutdown OK ...  but restarts itself after 10 minutes or so

    Hi Guys
Successfully installed Oracle Linux 6.4 operating system , which subsequently runs as expected.
When Oracle Linux 6.4 is shutdown using  standard GUI  system/shutdown ,
it does a clean shutdown and power-off as expected  ....
UNTIL some 10 minutes or so later , when Oracle Linux 6.4 reboots all by itself from a fully powered-down state.
Likewise when Oracle Linux 6.4 is shutdown using  standard command line " shutdown -h now" ,
it does a clean shutdown and power-off as expected  ....
UNTIL some 10 minutes or so later , when Oracle Linux 6.4 reboots all by itself from a fully powered-down state.
Clearly it is NOT desirable to have the operating system able  restart of it's own accord.
A manual shutdown is typically  done for good reason , and the server should remain shutdown.
The previous version, ie Oracle Linux 6.3 did not exhibit this behavior.
When Oracle Linux 6.3 was shutdown, it stayed shutdown
    Question
    ======
Does anyone know how to STOP Oracle Linux 6.4 from restarting itself after a successful shutdown ?
    Thanks
    Bruce

Does anyone know how to STOP Oracle Linux 6.4 from restarting itself after a successful shutdown ?
Assuming your network interface is eth0, execute "$ ethtool eth0", like below, and indicate what you get for the lines "Supports Wake-on" and "Wake-on.
    lx04:/root $ ethtool eth0
    Settings for eth0:
            Supported ports: [ TP ]
            Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                    100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                    1000baseT/Full
            Supported pause frame use: No
            Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
            Advertised link modes:  Not reported
            Advertised pause frame use: No
            Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
            Speed: 1000Mb/s
            Duplex: Full
            Port: Twisted Pair
            PHYAD: 0
            Transceiver: internal
            Auto-negotiation: on
            MDI-X: Unknown
            Supports Wake-on: pg
            Wake-on: d
            Current message level: 0x0000003f (63)
drv probe link timer ifdown ifup
            Link detected: yes
Then check in your BIOS (usually under APM) for any enabled power-on settings associated with PCI or PCIe bus (your NIC will use one or the other).

  • Oracle Linux

what would be the advantages, and hence disadvantages
of using oracle linux over redhat for oracle database 11g
    production site?
    thanks

From what I can gather there are only advantages. For instance:
    - One and the same vendor for OS and Database support, no finger pointing.
    - ULN subscription for patches and errata support has better cost/benefit compared to Red Hat.
    - Public yum repository.
    - OS distributions and updates are freely available.
    - More modern and optimized kernel for Oracle, but also installing original Red Hat kernel.
    - Oracle-validated package to perform prerequisites for Database installation.

  • Thinking to use Oracle Linux

    Hello friends,
I am used to work on MS Windows. Without a doubt we get a better performance if we use DB and OS from Oracle.
What are basics of Oracle Linux I have to know to be able to install Oracle DB 11g SEO on Oracle Linux ???
Is it possible to install it with Oracle DB 11g on Virtual Box in Production environment ??
    ** My environment is Oracle 11g R2 SEO. APEX 4.1 , Glassfish 3.1.2
    Best Regards,
    Fateh

Starting from scratch? I'm afraid that's too much to ask and expect from a forum thread. Where do you need to start? Installing Oracle 11g Database Edition One is the same as installing any other oracle Oracle 11g Database edition. You start by reading the documentation, which covers the installation on Linux.
    In a nutshell:
    - Download the Linux OS installation DVD from Oracle edelivery cloud.
    - Boot the system from DVD or use the downloaded iso file in VirtualBox.
    - Setup yum.
    - Install "oracle-validated (OL5) or "oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall" (OL6).
    - Install Oracle Database
Your question about VirtualBox depends on your production environment, but generally no. Oracle provides Oracle VM for x86, which installs on bare metal machines to provide virtualization (type 1) and supports production systems. For evaluation and testing, VB is great and does the job quite well, providing a lot of useful options.

  • How to Install Oracle ASM 11gR2 In Oracle Linux 6.5

    Hi
I want to install oracle ASM in oracle linux 6.5 .
Can any one helps me to find a paper with above subject?
    Thanks

Theses steps only if You want to use ISCSI. This is fine to get the howto:
If You ar running in VM Ware Boxes:
Add the following to the *.vmx file for the virtual machine:
    disk.EnableUUID = "TRUE"
Restart the vm machine and the /dev/disk/by-id/scsi**** should be visible.
That's a nasty one - without this ISCSI just doesn't work
    chkconfig iscsi on
    iscsiadm -m discovery -t st -p 192.168.146.100
    iscsiadm -m node -T iqn.1991-05.com.microsoft:iscsi-asm-target   -p 192.168.146.100 -l
192.168.146.100 <=== IP Number of ISCSI Host
iqn.1991-05.com.microsoft:iscsi-asm-target <== Name of ISCSI Server, you get this as output from discovery command
Now, you must make sure that the devices belong to oracle.
Take a look at this link:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/udev-scsi-rules-configuration-in-oracle-linux-5-and-6.php#make_scsi_devices_trusted
Add the following to the "/etc/scsi_id.config" file to configure SCSI devices as trusted. Create the file if it doesn't already exist.
    options=-g
    /sbin/scsi_id -g -u -s /block/sdc <== for all ISCSI devives
    vi /etc/udev/rules.d/99-oracle-asmdevices.rules

    RESULT=="360003fff419213c1b088599c1a9a0a7f" <=== That is returned by /sbin/scsi_id -g -u -s
    Reload:
    /sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules
    /sbin/start_udev
Now you have your devices read, belonging to oracle:
    ls -al /dev/asm*
Next go to oracle download click on list all and get:
Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.1.0) for Linux x86-64
After extracting this you are ready to go.
When starting the install process you get an option to "change path", here select /dev.
In my test systems I use to set "external" for dataprotection.

  • Spacewalk quickstart for Oracle linux 6.1

I have spacewalk installed following the instructions at https://fedorahosted.org/spacewalk/wiki/HowToInstall. I am completely stuck regarding what to do next.
My question is, how do I register my new spacewalk server with oracle linux network in order to subscribe to channels and start downloading updates?
I am under the impression there is a command similar to rhn_register to get this spacewalk server registered with OLN. I am at a dead end here any insight would be appreciated.

I have a basic question, is Oracle Management Pack for Linux a stand alone application or like the name indicates a pack to another larger application ?The Linux Management Pack is part of Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Grid Control. It requires a full install of Grid Control, which includes Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition, Oracle WebLogic Server and Enterprise Manager Grid Control itself. However, once you have this installed, it is better suited to managing and maintaining large groups of Oracle Linux servers than Spacewalk. Spacewalk has no internal capabilities to manage Oracle Linux boxes and requires continual tweaking in order to keep it working, in the same way you can't actually manage large groups of Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers with it (requires the actual Satellite Server product) without lots of tweaking.
For example, in order for Spacewalk to work, you have to keep using the rep_populate.sh script you're currently using to create local yum mirrors to import into Spacewalk. The Spacewalk server itself won't talk to ULN without code hacking, as far as I could tell. While Spacewalk can be made to work, it's not straightforward and there is no documentation online on how to get it to work with Oracle Linux. It's a lot of trial and error with manipulating the CentOS instructions.
BTW, we include all the licenses you need for the entire stack with your Oracle Linux basic or premier subscription, so you can install the entire stack! Furthermore, you can then start to explore managing the rest of your Oracle products from a central location. Enterprise Manager 11g Grid Control can handle management from the operating system (or virtualization layer if you start looking at Oracle VM) all the way up the stack through the database to application servers and beyond.
