Oracle Lite vs Personal Oracle

I use Oracle Server 8.1.7 at work and want to do some development work at home. Which version should I use on my Win 98 machine and what are the pros and cons of each?

I would advise you to use Personal Oracle.
Personal Oracle has most of the features the Enterprise version of Oracle 8.1.7 has. Oracle Lite is a very light weight version of Oracle which doesn't really have anything to do with the normal versions.
Especially when you want to develop things at home and deploy them at work you need Personal Oracle

Lite vs Personal Oracle

I have a laptop running Windows ME. From what I have tried and what I have seen, Oracle does not have a database which will install on this.
So it appears I need to get a new operating system. Which is the best for personal use on my laptop and what are the main differences between Oracle Lite and Oracle Personal databases.

What is the difference between Oracle Lite and Oracle 10g Express Edition?
Can an application written for oracle lite work out-of-the-box for the express edition?

two completely different products. express is essentially the same as the server oracle database. same functionality, same sql and pl/sql support, same structure.
olite is a different architecture in terms of data files, and the sql is slightly different, and does not support many new facilities. there is no pl/sql at all and performance/tuning is different.

Lite or Personal Oracle?

Dear all
Not (yet) familiar with Lite. I try to find out whether Lite supports a number of required features or whether PO has to be used. Reading Lite's datasheet, I found for instance that BLOBs are supported. But how about features like:
- SDO datatype (Locator)
- external procedures (extproc)?
- user defined objects?

It is probably not a very good idea to try downloading those huge files having a modem connection. I have downloaded myself via DSL connection and it took me hours. The first time I even got a timeout just minutes before the end. I would say that with your modem you might have a serious problems. Try a friend with fast internet and CD burner.

Does Oracle Lite support Oracle Spatial

Does anybody know whether Oracle Lite or Personal Oracle supports the Oracle Spatial plug-in. Also, for extra credit does anybody know what the difference between Personal Oracle and Oracle Lite is?
We will be needing to provide some attribute and spatial data from our Oracle Enterprise database to several laptops for field personnel using an electronic map we developed. We would like to use a portable version of Oracle that supports Oracle Spatial objects.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oh, I didn't realize it was so limited. No, that won't do. We're looking for a "mini" version of the real production database including stored code, triggers etc. Should be scaled down enough to allow rapid syncing of data and schema changes from the production (or really QA) database, but full enough to include the objects necessary to allow the developers to test their code changes to the front end applicaiton on their own environment.

Running a BC4J JSP application for Oracle Lite on OC4J

Hi,
My BC4J JSP application is working with Oracle and Oracle Lite on Apache (Oracle 8i Personal Edition) and on Tomcat 3.2. The same BC4J's could be used from the BC4J Tester as well.
But if I run the application on OC4J (standalone and embedded in JDeveloper 9i RC1 and RC2) using Oracle Lite, a Fatal Internal Error (or with JDK1.2 a NullPointerException) occurs.
I think I found the reason:
1. the Java Trigger in Oracle Lite and
2. the Timestamp used in Oracle Lite instead of Date.
My problem is, that I can't find any information about configuration of OC4J so that it could work with Oracle Lite as well as Apache and Tomcat.

The tell tale sign that the application is communicating with the running cache server is the membership information that is logged. In your previous running of the example you would have "members=1" embedded in the logging. From the sounds of what you are doing, you'd expect this to be different as the application would be joining a running instance. Check out section 1.3 of this doc on the system you are using.

Satelite Forms and Oracle Lite

Hi Guys, In order to develop the application using Puma Tech Satelite form what version should i use? Satelite forms enterprise edition with Full Server? or Just the Enterprise Edition without server? Please reply me i am planning to buy the software.

Oracle 8i is a version of the Oracle RDBMS. You can buy special "sizes" of this RDBMS like: Enterprise, Standard, Personal or Lite.
Oracle Personal is good for Developers using a private database on their own computer, usually Oracle Standard is good for a smaller server and Oracle Enterprise is for huge databases. Oracle lite is only for users that have a database on their laptop and don't need many extras. So the basic thing, the RDBMS, is always the same, but depending on the size there may be less or more "extras". You can learn more about these extras in the product decriptions on the Oracle-Site.
To sum up, you can have a personal Oracle 8i.
That's how I understand that.

CodeWarrier and Oracle Lite

Hi All, I am trying to develop a small project using Codewarrier and oracle lite. For using OKAPI i need to include libokapi.lib and libokstub.lib files. I couldn't locate them in my machine? Could anyone tell me where do i find these files?

J2me/kvm connectivity to PALM Oracle lite 8i/9i??

Thanks for the respose. But I want to have local database in Palm Oracle lite. The oracle lite database will be on palm device. My question is, If we can commect to oracle lite on palm using jdbc/etc?
I am new to J2Me, But what I understand by writing servlets that they will be running on a web server. But I want the program to run on PALM DEVICE(AWT/SWING) with connnnection to local oracle lite.

I am working on a prototype between Oracle Lite and Oralce 8i database. I have managed to install oracle lite on PC and also manage the replication between the Oracle database and Oracle Lite database. I can also connect to the Oracle Lite database (It is a ODB file) through SQL plus. But I am having a few problems :
1) While connecting to Oracle Lite database I get a message
"Server not available or version too low for this feature" without any oracle error number. The versions are as follows : Oracle Open Client Adapter for ODBC 6.0.5.3.0
Oracle Lite ORDBMS 4.0.0.2.0
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
With the Partitioning and Java options
PL/SQL Release 8.1.5.0.0 - Production
To connect to Oracle Lite database, your give the userid/password@odbc:<<oracle lite dbname>>
What can be the possible reasons?
2) I tried to create a database link between the Oracle Lite database and Oracle database and when I try to fire a select on a table in Oracle Lite database I get an error
"ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver designator"
so how dow we create a database link between these 2 databases?

Oracle Lite vs Oracle XE

What's the different between "Oracle Lite Edition" and "Oracle Express Edition"?
Please give me comparison table with Data Volume, Memory, No of users, License and other key features..

They are two different code lines. Oracle Database XE is based on the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Code line and as such supports the SQL and PL/SQL dialects, and standard data types found in Oracle. Oracle Lite has a different code line, albeit with similar data types, similar SQL dialects, but no PL/SQL.
Oracle Lite is a very small footprint database - around 6 Mb I believe. It runs on Windows/Linux and also some OS on smaller devices, such as phones and PDAs. Oracle Database XE has a larger footprint (considerably) and will not run on phones and PDAs.
Oracle Lite is multi-user, but is mainly designed for disconnected mobile applications, where the device/machine synchronizes a subset of data with the main Oracle Database. Oracle XE is multi-user, and can also replicate data to and from a 'main' Oracle Database.
Unfortunately I don't have time to get into a full feature by feature comparison. We will do soemthing like this for production however, as it's sure to be an FAQ. In the meantime, if you told us what your considerations are I could provide some insight into which would be the better solution.

Oracle Lite java(?) conduit for Palm

I had a lot of fun getting the Oracle Lite for handhelds install to work. Now I get the following error on hotsync:
Unable to initialize threads: ,en
Can't create Java VM
OK Oracle with 2 message(s)
Has anyone actually managed to get this to work? Any help will be appreciated.
