  • Updated OWB module available in "Oracle By Example" series on OTN

    All,
The Oracle By Example series on OTN has been updated to Oracle9i Release 2. This includes a Warehouse Builder module updated from 3i to 9i. The module is a simple set of hands-on activities using the order entry tables that come with the database. (The module is a high-level overview, not a substitute for the 4-day instructor led course, "Oracle9i Warehouse Builder: Implementation", course code D12157GC20.)
The URL for the Oracle By Example OWB module is:
    http://otn.oracle.com/obe/
Click "Oracle by Example Series Release 2".
Then click #8, "Build a Data Warehouse for Business Intelligence".
Then click #8, "Creating a Data Warehouse Using Oracle Warehouse Builder".

    Hi Paul,
    As far as my understanding.
You dont want to create "REL_EXPENSE.REL_EXPENSE.REL_TIME_DAY_CODE" in the times dimension since the "code" attribute is already present in the time dimension(once you created using time wizard).
Soon after you created the cube by mapping the two dimension "category" and "times" to it, all the attributes in both the dimension will be present in the cube automatically. Other than this you will create a measure column named "Expense" in the cube.

    This is the patch: 2529822
"Best Practices for Tabular Cube Aggregation & Query Operations". Thanks very much for your advice.
I followed the instructions in the document, but it did not seem to make a difference when
trying to follow the tutorial instructions and using the SALES measure.
However, I selected the stock price measures and it worked ok.
Is there a size limit here? I am looking at Oracle OLAP and BIBeans to replace our Cognos installation,
which is expensive and unreliable on unix. Of course our managers and customers want every dimension
across a huge fact table to be available for end users...

  • Are there any Oracle OLAP ODI Knowledge Modules for Oracle Olap 11g ?

Hi guys, wasnt sure where to post this so I put it here and the ODI forum
Does anybody know when Oracle OLAP Knowledge Modules, will be available for Oracle Olap 11g. It appears that the knowledge modules released with Oracle Data Integrator 10.1.3.5, currently only work with Oracle Olap 10g...
If there is no timeline, does anybody know of work around to get ODI reverses working on Analytical Workspaces built in Oracle Olap 11g
    Thank you

Raise a service request with Oracle Support (Metalink) for your system slow issue. May be, they will recommend you the workarounds for the issues which are not yet available for 11g in the form of Patches.

  • Making Business Intelligence Applications Smart with Oracle OLAP .

Business intelligence developers who want in-depth understanding and expert skill levels with OLAP will find that the book takes them significantly beyond product documentation and a wizard-based exposure to the technology. The book puts the reader on a learning path beginning with a definition and explanation of the benefits of OLAP, and ending with a comparison of multidimensional analysis techniques to other the analytical approaches used in business intelligence applications: data mining and statistics. On this path the reader learns the syntax and programming techniques, and discovers the information analysis principles that motivate its use.
The content of the book is based on the Oracle 10g database, however, most of the programming statements shown will work with other editions of the database, such as Oracle 9i and 11g, and even earlier editions of the technology found in stand-alone products such as the Express database, Oracle Financial Analyzer, and Oracle Sales Analyzer. So if you are developing business intelligence systems in Oracle or porting from one of these platforms this book gives you helpful information you will use to get the job done.
You should find The Multi-dimensional Data Modeling Toolkit with plenty of valuable insights to offer. e book is available on Amazon directly from the publisher's website at [http://www.learn-Oracle-OLAP.com|http://www.learn-Oracle-OLAP.com] .

Above given information is really helpful especially for newbies who wants to retrieve the multidimensional data from sql 2005.
I would also recommend a book on OLAP and believe me its pretty informative.

I suspect your metadata is incomplete. Please refer to the bi_checkconfig utility to test your metadata. This can be found on the documentation section of the BI Beans section of OTN:
Displaying Information about your BI Beans Client Configuration using the bi_checkconfig utility
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bib/htdocs/904/tech_notes/bicheckconfig/bi_checkconfig_tn.html
This will allow you to test the structures in your metadata to ensure each object (dimension, cube) can in fact be queried.
    Hope this helps

  • Oracle OLAP:Same member values across dimensions

We had an enquiry from a client which mentions:
Per Essbase the same dimension member value cannot exist across multiple dimensions. e.g. if we have a account dimension with member 1001 , it is not possible to have product dimension with same member value 1001. This is essentially because Essbase implements it like a shared member. Apparently Essbase Excel-addin will not know what dimension to search for if both have same values.
As per our understanding there is no such limitation in Oracle OLAP both during cube build or querying via Excel Add-in. i.e we can have account dimension with member 1001 and same member value can exist in a product dimension. Please advise and if anybody has any reference to any documentation in this regard please let us know.

    Hi there,
You are correct - there is no such limitation in Oracle OLAP.
A dimension value must be unique in any given dimension but can be repeated in other dimensions.
I do not have any documentation but this is really easy to prove using the OLAP worksheet in AWM, eg:
    aw create test
    define dim1 dimension text
    maintain dim1 add 'MEMBER1'
    report dim1
    define dim2 dimension text
    maintain dim2 add 'MEMBER1'
    report dim2
    aw detach test
aw delete testI hope this helps

  • Oracle OLAP input and retrieve data

    Hi,
I'm new in the oracle environment and I'm searching for an advice.
I installed oracle database 10g with the olap option. I would like to know how to input multi-dimensional data in OLAP with isqlplus in command line, is this possible?
then, how to retrieve this data, and if possible in an xml format?
    thanks a lot

There are a number of ways to do this. As far as I know there is no direct way to pass data into an OLAP cube, however, other people on this forum might be able to correct me regarding this.
What you need to do is to map your dimension and cube objects to relational tables. You can then schedule the loads directly using Analytic Workspace Manager or by using a PL/SQL package generated by Analytic Workspace Manager.
Therefore, your XML stream needs to be converted into a relational representation so it can used in a mapping. To do this you could use the XML engine within the database to store your XML data and then convert it to a relational view.
To then extract OLAP data to an XML format I would recommend creating relational views over the multi-dimensional cubes and dimensions. Analytic Workspace Manager has an add-on module that will create the views for you. Once you have the relational view you can then use the XML engine again to convert this to an XML representation.
Another approach might be to use Warehouse Builder 10g R2 to manage this whole process for you as it can use XML objects as data sources and can publish mappings as web services to extract data from an object.
I am not aware of any white papers or documentation that will specifically help you with this so you may need to look at lots of manuals to make this work. But if you have any questions then just post them on this forum and hopefully you will get answers.
    Hope this helps

  • OBIEE Vs MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP

    Hi Gurus,
We need to present to customer a comparison between OBIEE 10.1.3.4 and SIMBA´S "MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP" to attack OLAP Cubes in 11gR2.
Of course OBIEE is more powerful and complete, but technically, we would like to know which OBIEE capabilities (apart from ibots, scheduling, hability of representing information) are not available or cant´t be utilized from SIMBA´s Sw.
Are there known limitations of MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP?
Is it truth that in the new OBIEE release the Microsoft Office add in is going to be more powerfull or is it going to remain the same?
Thanks in advance for your answers,
    Best Regards,

Yes. There are a lot of performance work done for the production release.

Hi! I'm new to Oracle OLAP. What end-user client software can I use to analyze my data?

Hi! I'm new to Oracle OLAP. What end-user client software can I use to analyze my data? You may want to take a look at the Oracle9i BI Beans. Visit the following site on OTN:

  • Oracle OLAP and Writeback

In reading through the introductory documents and the OLAP Java API and the fact that the article on cell level writeback ( http://oracleolap.blogspot.com/2010/10/cell-level-write-back-via-plsql.html ) in the comments at the end explains that the feature is actually undocumented, I need to ask about writeback.
We are interested in a multi-dimensional solution that will allow top down planners and bottom up planners to create, analyze, publish, and track their plans. This requires writeback capabilities at multiple levels of the various hierarchies.
In looking at the Java API it seems that writeback is not really supported other than through OLAP DML - if it is otherwise supported, I can not find the appropriate API. IT seems to be covered under allocation, unless I am misunderstanding.
It also appears, from another posting in this forum, that AWM does not directly support allocation nor write back, which is fine because we'd probably write our own UI for that. But it does help raise the general writeback question.
In the oracleolap blogspot posting mentioned able, there is a nice article on an undocumented feature that allows for cell level writeback.
So given all this, I am led to wonder if Oracle OLAP really supports writeback as a first class feature or if it really doesn't fit into the overall product offering.
Thanks for any help you can provide
    Bob

Full write back capabilities are also available in Escendo Analytics along with a full conversion utility from OFA/OSA to Oracle OLAP and Escendo Analytics.
