Oracle on Linux vs. Oracle on NT (Performance)
Does someone have information about some benchmarks studies of Oracle on Linux vs. Oracle on NT?
Thanks so much,
Andre
I looked at this for a data warehouse project. Same hardware (multi-boot) with various Linux distros (Red Hat, SuSE, and Mandrake) vs. NT4. Loaded the same data in all configurations.
Results: performance was better on all Linuxen that I tested than it was on NT, but not a big enough difference to choose on this basis alone.
I did, however, see that all the Linux variations were MUCH more stable than NT. I do almost all my development on a Linux server now, just because I got tired of rebooting NT every time my mouse moved. However, thus far most of the production with this warehouse is still being done on NT--so it CAN be made to work, I just don't understand why anybody wants to do it the hard way.
Subjectively, I thought Red Hat was the most inconvenient Linux to work with, SuSE was easy, and Mandrake was nice but it wasn't officially supported by Oracle. I've also had good experiences with SuSE support, but Red Hat support just ignored me. That's just me; I don't know how others have fared with the various support departments.
I did this about a year ago, so it was 8.1.6 Oracle and whatever Linux versions were current at the time (all had 2.2.* kernels); I have not revisited this with 9i and the only Linux distribution I'm using now is SuSE 7.2.

Oracle Enterprise Linux - Installing Oracle
Hi everyone,
I am trying to install Oracle on Oracle Enterprise Linux. I know, I know...it seems silly to install Oracle on Oracle enterprise Linux. What seems even more ridiculous is that the default install does not include everything you'd need to install Oracle. Here's the error...it's all over Google, but none of the solutions are working for me. Looks like I just need a package, but where do I get it?

Thanks in advance!There was a very similar question a few hours ago. You may want to check the answer:
Packages error while installing Oracle Management Agent.
Please always post the 4 digit version of Oracle you are trying to install and also the Oracle Linux version / distribution you are using.
Since you are using Oracle Linux you can use Oracle public yum. Details are here:
http://public-yum.oracle.com/
Then all you need to do as root or superuser is:
yum install libXp.i386
You may also want to install:
yum install oracle-validated
which will also setup the account, kernel parameters, etc.
Oracle Enterprise Linux is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which should explain why it does not include everything you'd need to install Oracle database. As of Oracle Linux 5.5 the product was renamed from OEL to OL and since 5.6 the default kernel is Oracle Linux UEK, which is Oracle customized. -

Oracle enterprise linux and oracle 10g?
Hey;
I'm pretty new to trying to download oracle and get it installed on a linux box. I made a couple of attempts on linux fedora core 10 and windows vista home edition both of which didn't get very far. Since I just past my ocp exams via a boot camp (yay for me!), I'm hoping to get a couple of linux boxes up and running to ensure I get the concepts down through practice.
From what I'm reading, it looks like I can download enterprise linux, put that on a system, and then download oracle 10g and install that w/little or no trouble (at least not expected...)
Am I reading that right or did I miss something? Any info greatly apprecaited.
Doug O'LearyHello,
You can download enterprise linux and 10g and get going. Enterprise linux is pre-packaged for the required components required to install oracle software, here is a link for your future reference to see platform compatibility.

Oracle on Linux recommendations
Hello,
I'm looking to migrate our Oracle installation from Windows to Linux. I am an experienced Linux administrator and architect, and I am also very familiar with SAN storage, but have not looked at the details of implementing Oracle on Linux before. I have certain constraints dictated by our client requirements and available hardware. Namely, the hardware platform will be 2 HP DL580's connected via dual fibre to HDS (Hitachi) 9900V storage. There will be multiple luns presented for different containers. As a result of the multiple storage paths we require good multipath IO support. For this reason my first choice is Redhat Enterprise AS 5. However, on the database side we are limited due to client application compatibility to Oracle 10g R1/R2. We are looking to deploy RAC. We are also looking at 64bit for larger file and memory support. Is this realistic?
What sort of configuration should I be looking at?
Should I be looking at Oracle Enterprise Linux 5?
Am I going to have problems if we want to use RHEL5?
Is Oragle 10g well supported on RHEL5/OEL5 or will I have to drop to RHEL4/OEL4 (which may cause problems for my SAN mpio support.)
Will we require OCFS2 for any reason?
What advantage is there to me in running unbreakable linux? I've read the marketing blurbs but it is not clear to me what the advantages are.
Any feedback is welcome.
Thanks,
Sheldon.Hi,
I think it is Okay to you mentioned configuration to deploy the RAC based on 10g &RHEL5/OEL5.As a matter of fact,Oracle 10gR2 64-bit has been certified on RHEL5-64bit&OEL5-64bit.
Actually,OCFS2 and ASM are supported by Oracle RAC.The recommended way to manage large amounts of storage in a RAC environment is ASM (Automatic Storage Management).If you want to use the cluster file system,OCFS2 as an open source project is provided.
OEL5 is fully compatible with RHEL5.Unbreakable Linux is support service.If you choose the OEL5,you can benefit from it as below:
1,Oracle Enterprise Linux is Free to Download.For Enterprise customers had to pay for a support contract to actually get an enterprise Linux distribution, even if they just wanted to evaluate it. With Oracle Unbreakable Linux, customers can always download the binaries and the source code for free, no support subscription required.Free download at: http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux
2,Oracle applied a number of bugfixes on top of the original code. These are very limited in scope, and they are critical for customers to have as soon as possible in their production deployment. For a complete listing, read the following data sheets:http://www.oracle.com/technologies/linux/el5cert-ds.pdf
3,Extensive Testing:
Tremendous effort has gone into assuring that there is no divergence from the original Red Hat source code, given that the main goal of Oracle Enterprise Linux and the Oracle.
4,Patches and Bugfixes
Another aspect of compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux is around patches and bugfixes written by Oracle and not appearing in the Red Hat distribution.
5,Pay less money and get more professional support service:)

Linux,tuxedo,oracle ,HP ux, RM entry
hello all,
I am new to tuxedo and i run my tuxedo application in linux.I have oracle client
in linux and oracle databases running in HP unix .so which RM entry do i have
to make for building my TMS ---the RM entry for linux or the RM entry for HP Unix(
i mean where the database server is running?)
some one please help.If RM entry is for linux ,any place i can get it?
thanks in advance,
adiThanks peter,
that cleared my basic doubt.However very little is known of linux rm entry.i would
encourage someone to post on that ,still.
Peter Holditch <[email protected]> wrote:
adi,
The RM file entry tells buildserver which database libraries it needs
to
link with your
server code to give xa access to the database.
Therefore, if your Tuxedo server (including the TMS, which is just
another Tuxedo server) will be running on Linux, you want the Linux RM
entry because the Tuxedo server will be a Linux executable, linked with
Linux libraries.
If the database libraries are actually communicating with a different
box where the database instance executes
at run-time, that's handled by the implementation of the databse
libraries, not by Tuxedo,
so it is transparent from the perspective of coding and building all
Tuxedo server executables.
I hope that helps,

Peter.

Performance Oracle for Linux OS/390
Hi all,
somebody know some issues in Oracle for Linux OS/390..?
instalation, performance, etc.
Thanks and advanced.
Best regards....Hi Shane,
Oracle has only released client software for Intel Macs, but not the full database server software. If you want to run the Oracle database on your Mac, I suggest installing on a supported OS running in a virtual machine (VMware Fusion, Parallels, or VirtualBox). Michael McLaughlin has a very thorough post on his blog about using an Intel Mac as a client for a database server running in VMware Fusion.

Guide to installing XE and Apex on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 (64 bit)
I have just been through a time consuming and frustrating process of installing Oracle XE 10gR2 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 x86-64 and I want to share my experience so that others can benefit from it and overcome the same problems more quickly.
Prior to starting I had installed OEL 5.3 and been using it for a few days. The system I am using is a home built box with an AMD Phenom X4 955 Black Edition, 8 Gb RAM, Highpoint RR2680 RAID controller with 4 1TB disks in a RAID5 array and an additional 320Gb HDD storing the OS. I am using KDE3.5 on the desktop.
The main problem I encountered was with SELinux. As I eventually intend to have this system exposed on the Internet I was reluctant to switch it off despite having read extensively about the issues surrounding it and Oracle. I had several failed attempts at the installation process before succumbing to the reality that SELinux and Oracle are not happy bedfellows. I decided to switch SELinux to permissive mode having followed the advice here.
I found a very helpful guide to installing XE on Linux here as part of the installation of an application called Spacewalk. Note that you do not need to complete the whole Spacewalk installation, but just follow the instructions in the linked page.
Before you start you need to ensure that the UID of your oracle user is less than 500. Mine was 500, so I used the following commands to fix this:
usermod -u 250 oracle
find / -uid 500 -exec chown oracle {} \;
These change the oracle UID to 250 (but check that isn't already used first!) and the find command searches for all files that were owned by oracle (but weren't after the usermod cmd) and changes them back to oracle's ownership.
Now follow the Spacewalk instructions until you reach the Server Setup section. Before you do this you need to make a couple of changes to the script /etc/init.d/oracle-xe. I found these changes in various places, such as [link(1)|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1345771] and [link(2)|http://dbataj.blogspot.com/2008/08/lblibrarypath-is-not-set-on-startup.html].
Note that in link(1) the oracle-xe-selinux packages installed have the same effect as the chcon command on the shared libraries so it isn't necessary to perform this step.
Open /etc/init.d/oracle-xe in vi (or your favourite editor) and do the following:
line 49: change /bin/su to /sbin/runuser
after line 52 (export PATH...) add the following lines:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
There are further changes recommended to /etc/init.d/oracle-xe in [this post|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3201491] but I haven't done them yet.
Having done the above changes you can now configure Oracle XE by running /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure (as root!). As I have Apache Tomcat running on port 8080 I changed the default HTTP port to 8500 but kept the listener on its default port of 1521. Once the confuration script is done you will need to change the ports SELinux uses for Oracle as follows:
semanage port -d -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 9000 - deletes port 9000, which is the SELinux default port for Apex
semanage port -a -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 1521 - ensure that listener port is OK (assuming you used default of 1521, change accordingly if you didn't)
semanage port -a -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 8500 - add the new Apex HTTP port to SELinux
After all this running:
semanage port -l | grep oracle
should show you:
oracle_port_t tcp 1521, 8500
I ignored the TNSNAMES.ORA part of the Spacewalk instructions and proceeded with the 'Client setup on 64bit platform' and 'Configuring sqlplus' sections.
For the latter I created a bash script which I have made available in the oracle user and my own user's home directories:
cat > configure_oracle_10g_xe.sh
ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server
PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
ORACLE_SID=XE
export ORACLE_HOME ORACLE_SID PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
I did this as I intend to install other Oracle databases, e.g. 11gR2, on this box later so I didn't want to put the above in .bashrc.
Having done the above you should be able to log into the database using sqlplus and the XE setup is complete.
The upgrade of Apex 2.2 to Apex 3.2.1 was fairly painless so I won't go into much detail about it - just follow the instructions provided by Oracle.
The only issue I had was right at the end of the process and is documented and answered in [this thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=958611&tstart=0].
That's it - I hope somebody will find this useful.On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.
Sorry

Recommendations for RAID - HP ACU/Oracle Apex/Oracle Grid/Linux 6.3
Dear Experts,
Given:
- HW : HP ProLiant DL370 G6
- OS : Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.3
- Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g R2
- Oracle Apex 4.2
Current Status
When I have entered HP ACU from bootable Smart Start CD, I found under the configuration of Smart Array P410i in Embedded Slot, the following:
-Smart Array P410i in Embedded Slot
---Internal Drive Cage at Port 1I : Box 1
------300 GB 2-Part SAS Drive at Part 1I : Box 1 : Bay 1
------300 GB 2-Part SAS Drive at Part 1I : Box 1 : Bay 2

------300 GB 2-Part SAS Drive at Part 2I : Box 1 : Bay 7
------300 GB 2-Part SAS Drive at Part 2I : Box 1 : Bay 8
The questions now:
1) Do you recommend the following configuration for RAID's logical arrays:
Using Logical View:
SAS Array A - 4 Logical Drive(s)
--- Logical Drive 1 (50.0 GB, RAID 1+0) ---> for OS
--- Logical Drive 2 (24.0 GB, RAID 0) ---> for SWAP
--- Logical Drive 3 (200.0 GB, RAID 1+0) ---> for ASM DATA
--- Logical Drive 4 (296.7 GB, RAID 1+0) ---> for ASM FRA
SAS Array B - 1 Logical Drive(s)
--- Logical Drive 5 (1.1 TB, RAID 0) ---> not critical for sources and other applications
2) What are your recommendations for the following steps to reach oracle apex 4.2 installed?

Filesystem Suggestions for Oracle on Linux
Hello. We've been running Oracle on Solaris with Veritas Volume Manager (w/ qio) for about 4 years now and we are gearing up for going Oracle (9i) on Linux (AS). Since we are just getting started I wanted to run through setting up a preliminary test machine and Oracle install (I.E., we don't want to spend too much $ just yet).
Can anyone supply some feedback on the various filesystems that come with Redhat or that are available from the open source community (raw, ext3fs, xfs, reiserfs)? Eventually we may look at things like Veritas for Linux or OCFS, but for setting up a initial testbed, might yall recommend some pros and cons, perhaps some performance estimates of going raw, versus the various linux filesystems? Also, is there a good document available for setting up raw partitions on linux for oracle? Any and all feedback would be appreciated.Hi,
Keep in mind, if you need to use large amount of data, with databank files bigger than 2GB, some people consider the reiserfs the better option. Pther way ext3 is a good one.

Hi does anyone know of any plans to port Oracle to Linux on PPC?
I have Mandrake 9.1 running on Apple XServers which I was considering using Collaboration Suite on.I don't know if this is helpful or not, and is only a personal opinion and not based on any scientific measurement, but my old vintage RS/6000-6M1 p660 with quad cores (RS64-IV 64-bit copper cpus) running at 750MHz seems to have roughly similar Oracle performance to that of an Intel/Linux platform of 4 cores worth of early-generation P4-based Xeons running at maybe about 2.0GHz each. The IBM Power series processors are no slouch, even the early sub-1GHz versions were wickedly efficient.

We are in the process to select a database server for our research data (40 GB) we have two options Linux or Solaris. I would like to know how many people are around using Linux in an productive environment of this size or larger? Are you happy?
Also I read that disc performance might be a problem. Does anybody have expierience with RAIDs (eg. those available from DELL)?

It's true that most questions are answered by other users. There
are two reasons why I think that's a good thing.
1. It's just how Linux has always worked. We police our own
ranks, fix our own stuff, and solve our own disputes.
2. I believe that #1 was a driving factor for companies like
Oracle to port to Linux. The worldwide support network
available to the Linux community is something even micro$oft
can't match. From Oracle's point of view, it's a win/win.
A user community that fixes it's own stuff and never calls me
up? That's every vendor and sys-admin's dream.....
However if there are product related bugs/issues, that clearly
have no connection to configuration/misuse, (like missing libs,
ala patch[1-3].tgz) it IS the duty of Oracle Development
Personnel to step in.
Thanx for hearing me out,
