Oracle on *nix - Are you fibbing?

I wanted to install the enterprise version on my Ubuntu/Debian machine so I could get work done at home. I read the doc and, sure it listed a small set of supported *nix OS's:
Asianux 3.0
Oracle Enterprise Linux 4/Oracle VM
Oracle Enterprise Linux 5/Oracle VM
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4/Oracle VM
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5/Oracle VM
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
but, what the heck I figured. Sure enough the install failed and I installed xe. Here's the the thing though: we run 10g on Solaris/SunOS at work and its not on the list.
I suppose if you're a multi-billion dollar Fortune 50 company Larry'll bend the rules. : )

but, what the heck I figured. Sure enough the install
failed and I installed xe. Here's the the thing
though: we run 10g on Solaris/SunOS at work and
its not on the list.This is one of the more confusing posts I have seen in a long time.
1) The original list you posted was of Certified Linux distros (which are all variants of the one Linux operating system). That list is the set of distros for which Oracle is willing to provide commercial support (and even then with restrictions), simply because the amount of time testing and troubleshooting becomes prohibitive when people can freely play with core libraries.
It is possible to install EE on a distro not on the list. With any install (ORacle or otherwise) you need to meet the prerequisites. Since Oracle does not provide a apt/deb/rpm for their commercial products, you need to meet those prerequisites manually. That tis a fairly easy task for someone who understands the workings of the Linux OS.
2) By the title, you seem to imply that you looked at the complete list of Linux distros and Unix OSs. Yet you quote only Linux distros. Strange.
There are many people who would be upset seeing Solaris/SunOS (or HPUX or AIX) on the Linux list. If you want to see SOlaris, look at the complete list. The installation manuals are written by operating system and looking at the 'install manual' list at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.portal_db?selected=11 might help
3) XE is an unsupported edition of the 10gR2 database. It uses special .deb and .rpm install files rather than the standard Oracle Universal Installer. So the edition is unsupported and available on uncertified distros - implication is YOYO once installed.
If you really want to install EE on Ubuntu, follow some of the excellent guidelines found on the net (hint - use Google search for 'oracle on ubuntu', other engines should also work.) Just realize your environment will not be supported by Oracle, and updates and patches could easily break the enviroment.

    Hi Bryan,
    We have a major release coming out this year (no dates yet) with a lot of new features! More details on that in the coming months...
    The Team DBPro you are referring is not yet extensible for other database vendors including Oracle. We are following the development of DBPro and will be counting on you and all the other members of our community for the good feedback you have been providing us over the last several years. We really appreciate it!!! You can provide feedback here in the forums or email me directly (see below).
    I am currently seeking interested beta testers for our next release. If anyone reading this is the sort of person who likes to play with a new release (the fun part) AND provide a lot of detailed feedback (the-not-so-fun-part :) ), please send me an email and when the time comes I will get in contact with you! [email protected]
    Thanks!

  • Java on Chrome - what are you doing Oracle?

    Google have made clear for a long time that the NPAPI support in Chrome will be switched off, and that plugins using NPAPI should move to PPAPI.
    What is being done to migrate the Java plugin?
    Chrome has by far the biggest user base, and as of update 42 (on Windows - much earlier on Linux) NPAPI is no longer supported. Which means no more Java.
    Adobe has already updated the Flash plugin. What are you doing Oracle?

    Once oracle in a forms forum suggested they had a way to launch java code from the web directly to java
    installed on the client and not using a browser plugin. But they are cagey like let's wait and see if the customers
    end up with no way to run applets for a few months and if so then we could assign some developers to this. Whereas from
    the customer point of view, the very first minute that personnel cannot run mission critical applets is a serious problem
    for which the customer feels they should come up with a plan to deal with it now. Now wait until it happens.
    However web start or similar depends on java being installed on the client.
    This was an interesting article:
    Android is the new Win32, the new Java and the new Flash
    Marketing stuff but it points out an idea of using Android Runtime for Chrome” (ARC).
    There's many other potential solutions possible such as getting the firefox source now that can run the jre plugin
    and keeping it for later :-) Or taking the firefox source that won't run the plugin in the future and fixing it. Or some
    other browser source that can run the plugin. This is something we customers can do. It is certainly something Oracle
    can do but they have to have the think ahead mindset.

  • Airport in Bridge mode "not a supported format." Are you F'n kidding me?

    Forgive me if I'm freakin' a bit but I am at my wits end with Apple. Here's the breakdown.
    Fiber DSL into a standard wired 4 port D-Link router. Router is connected to HP 24 port switch because the D-Link does not have enough ports for my house. Switch feeds cat5 to all rooms in the house. Airport Extreme (newest version) is in living room and set to Bridge mode. I use it to connect multiple items in my entertainment area and wireless access for the Macbooks and iPhones.
    Up to a few weeks ago I was connecting my iMac via wireless but got sick of the connection dropping (pings would be unresponsive for minutes on end). I ended up moving my desk and plugging into a cat5 port on the wall. Well guess what... it's still dropping. OK, I removed everything from the network and started adding things one at a time over the past few days. Everything was running better than ever until I plugged the Airport back into the network. Mind you, I'm not running my iMac into the Airport, it is simply on the same network.
    After shaking my head for a while I called Apple. Well I just got off the phone w/ Tier 3 tech support for the Airport Extremes. I tell them that I have no idea why, but I'm only dropping connections when the Airport is on the network and I'm just curious if there is something in the settings that I'm missing. This is where it gets good... The brilliant Tier 3 "Technician" tells me that I am running an unsupported configuration because the Airport is running in bridge mode and it's attached to a wired router across the house. He says that if the D-Link router was also wireless he could help me. I asked what the difference was if it was wired or wireless but all he could say was he couldn't help me because it was a unsupported configuration.
    So - I'm ready to send all my CrApple gear to some poor kids on the other side of the world. Anyone have any ideas here?

    Bob Timmons wrote:
    I'm reading the original post with the understanding that the AirPort Extreme is connected by ethernet to the network and the replies indicate that as well.
    Are you saying that if the Extreme is in bridge mode connected by ethernet that the ports are not active?
    Not at all. What I was trying to say was that the connection from the Extreme to the internet must go through the WAN port, not a LAN port. In a large network, this can happen unintentionally. For instance, suppose a client has Internet sharing enabled and is connected wirelessly to the Extreme and by Ethernet to another router. Then the internet connection from the other router would be shared with the entire subnet, including the Extreme through its LAN port. This could cause problems with the network.
    However, with the network setup Jerastan describes, this does not seem to be the cause.

  • What functionality are you successfully using in your EO SuperClasses?

    Hi Everyone:
    We are very new to JHeadstart/JDeveloper and have just established the method we are going to use at the Entity Level to convert input to Uppercase by putting the following code into a superclass and extending the .xml files of the entities from EntityImpl to this superclass which we called UWEntityImpl.
    What I am wondering is what other ways is this functionality being used by you more experienced JHeadstart Developers? I am trying not to re-invent the wheel and utilize methods that have worked well for you.
    Of course I can think of toLowerCase, what else are you using?
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Mary
    U of Windsor
    Example Code:
    package its.sis.BusinessModel.model;
    import oracle.jbo.AttributeDef;
    import oracle.jbo.server.EntityImpl;
    public class UWEntityImpl extends EntityImpl {
    public UWEntityImpl () {
    // This code converts the inputted string to Uppercase in the database.
    // April 27, 2007 mb
    protected void setAttributeInternal(int i, Object object) {
    Object value = object;
    AttributeDef def = getEntityDef().getAttributeDef(i);
    if ("true".equalsIgnoreCase((String)def.getProperty("UPPERCASE"))) {
    if (value != null && value instanceof String) {
    value = ((String)value).toUpperCase();
    super.setAttributeInternal(i, value);
    }

    to)? I was curious because it seems to store them in
    a proprietary format, and before I get into moving
    hundreds more images I thought I would ask. I have
    2-300 gigs of usable space but Aperture seems like it
    could get huge with image adjustments.
    Hi Eric,
    I'm not a pro, but I wanted to clear up one of your issues. Aperture does not store or convert your files in a proprietary format. The image files that you store in the library will remain in their original format and untouched. The "Library" is a Mac OS X entity called a package. A package appears as a single file, but it's an illusion. If you ever needed to extract your image files, you can do so in the Finder (without Aperture) by option-clicking on the "Library" and selecting "Show Package Contents". Now you can navigate the file and folder structure to get at your originals. Of course, a much faster and easier way is to have Aperture export the originals. However, my point was to clear up the "proprietary" structure misunderstanding.
    Also--as was mentioned--each adjustment doesn't create a new image file. Every new version of your original is merely a list of instructions or "recipe" used to apply adjustments to the original to recreate the version for screen and print. This is done dynamically, on the fly. A finished version of the original is never created and saved to a file until you tell it to export a version. Thus, every version is a very small addition to the database. This is very unlike iPhoto, where every new version of a file creates a new image to store...all the more reason to move to Aperture.
    Hope that helps.

  • Oracle Table Values are not displayed when tried to display with Essbase

    Hi,
    I was trying to create a report with Oracle RDB Table and Essbase by following the steps given in "Federating Essbase and Relational Data Sources in Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition Plus" document at the location http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe_bi/bi_ee_1013/fed_data/fed_data.html.
    I am able to see the members from the Essbase cubes and I can also see the Oracle Table values, if they are displayed individually (i.e. different reports) but when I try to get one report with Essbase values with Oracle table records then Oracle table records are not displayed and when see the query log I don't see the query for Oracle table but I see obviously MDX queries for the essbase.
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Paresh

    Hi,
    Smitha, you can defnetly use dynamic table in interactive form. I had similar problem and I acheived like follwing:Basically you have to bind the table .
    If you want to have fixed number of rows in the interactive form, then in wddoinit method bind the internal table to ur table node. for exmaple: if u want 2 rows in the form loop times . So by default when you open the form you will get two rows for the table.
    **************BIND THE ITAB ****************************
    DO 2 TIMES.
    APPEND LW_LFBK TO LT_LFBK.
    CLEAR LW_LFBK.
    ENDDO.
    CALL METHOD lo_nd_t_lfbk->bind_table
    EXPORTING
    new_items = LT_LFBK.
    If you want to have dynmic table then take a submit button in the form instead of normal button,
    in onaction submit write a loop every time you click that new submit button it should add a new row.
    use above coding in onactionsubmit instead of doinit.
    Thats it.
    Regards,
    Ravi

    - QT ( qt4)
    - netcfg2
    So even if it is KDE you dont need a whole bunch of kde dependencies

  • The frustrating 'bug' of the oracle java page if you want 64 bit support.

    gosh, i wish there were a way to simply contact the oracle webmaster/webdev team. there isn't, as far as i can find. here's what i just emailed to [email protected] figured i'd share it here, on the outside chance someone at oracle might know how to escalate this:
    hi, this has frustrated me a number of times in the last year or two.
    go to the main java download page:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    i want the 64 bit java plugin. hey, there's a link "information about the 64-bit java plug-in", yay! click it, it goes to
    http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_win64bit.xml
    <read a bit through it> ah, there towards the bottom of the page, "java for 64-bit browsers, with the following text and link:
    "for downloading 64-bit java click 64-bit manual download". cool! click the link -
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    it takes me right back to the main download page! it's an infinite loop!
    i eventually just google, and type in 'jre-7u5-win' and it autocompletes to 'jre-7u5-widows-x64.exe download, and the first result returned is to the actual page needed:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1637588.html
    is there any chance y'all could fix this? i'm sure i'm not the only person frustrated by the circular results the main download page provides.
    thanks,
    paul

    Interesting... I have now tested on various Windows versions with various browsers, including FF, IE, and Safari. I even tested on my iPhone. It appears that the page attempts to identify your platform and browser and displays differences in the page based on that result. So, for example, on my iPhone (in Safari) and Linux (with FF) where I know I can't use java or at least one for Windows, the page resembles what you described. However, on all my Windows machines (regardless of browser) the page displays properly.
    So the questions to you is, are you doing this on a Windows machine or something else? If not Windows, this is why you are having the issue. If you want to download a Windows release while running a Linux, Mac, or other platform, you should use the method I described in my previous post of using java.sun.com then choosing Java SE under Top Downloads.
    If you are on a Windows platform, but are seeing this issue, be sure your browser version is current and ensure that you do not have a security setting or security software which may be preventing this page from properly detecting your platforms.

    What are Built In's in Oracle forms. Are they like built in trigggers. how r they different from triggers which r also bulit in.
    thanks

    a trigger is something, which runs, when an event fires.
    a built-in is like a function or procedure, which helps you doing your work.
    e.g.
    go_block ('myBlock'); - navigates to the block
    execute_query - starts a query
    exit_form -ends the form
    you can's compare triggers and built-ins. They are totally different.
    In a trigger you can use built-ins to establish a functionality

  • Are you happy with Java Applets?

    Are you happy with deploying your Forms to the Web as Java Applets? What kind of issues did you run into? Did you go the Java Applet deployment route for the lack of an easier/faster option? Wouldn't you prefer to deploy your forms as standard JSP pages? I really appreciate your feedback.
    Ali

    Ali,
    I wished things were as easy as black and white. It depends on what kind of application your are building. Is it busineess to business, business to customer, an Internet application or a heavily used internal application with high transaction volumes.
    There are a lot of application types that I, as a Forms Product Manager, wouldn't encourage you to use Forms for. Keeping in mind the memory footprint onthe server, the JInitiator plug in and the download time, self service applications that are of short term use definitively are not what Forms is made for.
    On the other side, JSP still requires a back end because its an interface technology and according to the MVC paradigm the view shouldn't have business logic in it. So you can use EJBs or Oracle's Business Components for Java to build the backbone of your application. In either way you are stepping out of the JSP case.
    There is a reason for all different interface types to exist: Use Java Applet for what they are good for and the Forms design and intended usage really goes in line with that. Please have a look at this Whitepaper for a good insight in the subject of Forms and J2EE technologies

  • Survey : are you gathering system statistics in Production env ?

    Does it help ?
    what work/effort did you do before you implemented stats in production ? did you first do it in dev and then test and then QA etc. or directly in producton ?
    What queries changed execution plans - any specific things you want to mention on how it influenced Oracle CBO ?
    please mention how big your database is and whether it is OLTP/DSS and which Oracle release you are running in production etc. so that we can get the background info as well.
    thanks

    ow001294, what kind of statistics are you asking about?
    If you are on version 10+ then Oracle by default generates and saves certain system and session statistics in the AWR.
    Generally speaking it is not a bad idea to use the STATSPACK package to take 5 or 10 minute snapshots of your database activity on a regular basis and generate and save the reports. The early reports serve as a baseline to compare later reports to.
    Trying to keep track of every query plan seems impractical for anyting but a very small system.
