Oracle - Open Source?

Good day!
I need to know whether Oracle products now on Open Source Software - specifically Oracle 8??! As far as I'm concerned, it is a proprietary software isnt it?
Thank you!! ;)

Larry Ellison is the second richest man in the world and he wants to be first. He's not going to achieve that by giving away Oracle databases. On the other hand he's only too keen to get people installing Oracle on Linux, because that's one in the eye for billg.

    Another SQL*Plus clone but this one is written in pure java, feel free to add it to the Oracle Open Source Projects page:
    SQL*More is a tool to execute commands against SQL databases in the same vein as SQL*Plus for Oracle. Key features are platform independence, database independence, a self-contained networking stack, a terminal friendly CLI implementation, and macro-like commands.
    Thanks,

    Happy to, but we'll need your project URL.

  • DBAShell - New Open Source Project for Oracle DBA's

    I'd like to have this project included in the Open Source Oracle tools list at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/community/opensource_projects.html
    I’'ve been an Oracle DBA for quite some time (since 7.0.13) and a developer for many years. One of the things I'’ve always wished for was an easier way to set up environment variables for different Oracle Home’s and a way to provide passwords to scripts without embedding them in plain-view.
    About 3 years ago, I started a set of functions and scripts at my company that did exactly just that and provided many more functions for things like checking database status, running scripts quietly unless errors are detected, running actions in parallel (like fast shutdowns at once, or multiple analyzes), restarting databases in a guaranteed fashion, aliases to common folder locations, etc..
    About a month ago, after putting all this time and effort into these scripts and using them in production all this time, I realized I wanted more out of the scripts like support for other databases and thought that it would be best if I gave it new life as an Open Source project.
    So that is how http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbashell/ was started. Now it’s in a second release (DBAShell 0.85) that is more modular and would allow other people to easily add support for other OS’s, other Shells, and other Databases.
    Here is a description of the project from the latest news item:
    DBAShell is a project based around Shell functions and scripts designed to make it easy for DBA's to use Databases in a command line environment. Currently supported is Oracle with ksh and bash on AIX, Solaris, Linux. The code base itself is 3 years old and has been in use in Production environments all of that time.
    Features include:
    * Automatic setting of all environment variables based on SID requested.
    * Manage PATH's and other path like variables for each ORACLE_HOME needed.
    * Run scripts with stored passwords (no more hard-coding of passwords!!)
    * Automatically set SID based on Script location (makes it easier to share scripts between SID's)
    * manage temporary script output and check for oracle errors in output
    * check database status and versions from scripts
    * stop/start databases in parallel (faster startup)
    * compile all database objects
    * analyze objects in parallel (Faster analyzes)
    * set aliases and variables for common SID areas, etc..
    * many helpful commands for common Oracle tasks
    Over a thousand people have already downloaded the prior release and more are downloading every hour.
    I'm seeking feedback from anybody that would be willing to take a look at the project, trying it out, give me any feedback you have on it, and perhaps even direct me to where I could best promote this project.
    I wrote a tutorial that shows at a glance some of the more useful features of DBAShell:

    Download:

    Always glad to have people thinking about the poor DBA's. Usually, the developers get most of the attention in open source.

  • Is there any product that is same as oracle coherence but is open source?

    I donot know if it is suitable to post this question here, but I really want to know it, so please help me~
    Is there any product that has same function as oracle coherence but is open source?

    You may have a look at for instance JBoss Cache. It does however (as far as I know) lack Coherence most useful (and powerful) caching architectures (i.e. "partitioned" and "near" caches). Nor do I belive you should expect the same level of stability or proven track record for use in demanding applications as coherence has.
    This said I think it can be a perfectly useful product for some applications were you don't need the most advanced features and don't have the budget for Coherence or some other commercial product - it is after all a lot better than writing your own project specific caching solution...

  • SQLpython in Open Source Projects for Oracle

    I'd like to strongly reccommend SQLpython ( https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/PSSGroup/SqlPython ) be added to the Open Source Projects for Oracle page ( http://www.oracle.com/technology/community/opensource_projects.html ). It's an SQL command-line client whose chief strength is incredibly convenient extensibility / personalizability. I've reviewed it briefly at http://catherinedevlin.blogspot.com/2006/05/sqlpython-sql-client-of-your-very-own.html
    Thanks very much!

    We have made this addition.

  • Oracle ADF Open source

    Hi ,
    Is Oracle ADF is open source framework ?

    Not open source in the sense that you can just download, modify and share the ADF code.
    However, the source code for ADF is available for all customers with a current support contract. You open a Service Request with Oracle support, fill in some paperwork (accepting that you can't publish it, among other things) and then Oracle Support makes the ADF source code availabel to you.

    Hi,
    Is there any open source tools available for the database migration from Oracle to MySQL.
    Please advice.

  • Open-source projects on Oracle

    I had actually asked this question a while ago, but the answer from Oracle was a little vague.
    Is it legal to use the downloadable versions of the Oracle database, AS, and other tools (such as JDeveloper) to author open-source software?
    Thanks,
    Sean

    A better way to say it would be
    Oracle corporation delivers free kit of full oracle10g solution which include database,AS,DS and many other CD's with the free evaluation license. you can use these product only for evaluation of the product or for study purpose but you can not use them in production/development environment. for a production/development environment you must purchase a license according to given requirements.

  • Where can I find a sophisticated sample app (from open source or oracle)?

    I am looking for open-source or Oracle's sample applications that uses most if not all of the features in Oracle Appserver 10.1.3. Most of existing sample applications I found under the 'sample applications' link are for older version of Oracle AS, and not compatible with 10.1.3. Other requires JDeveloper, which I don't plan on using.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    Henry

    Henry, thanks for the feedback ... I have asked the product manager responsible for the JCA demo to take a look and update the sample. The best way to file the bug without having access to the db is tell us here. We try our best - though sometimes can't keep up - to monitor the forums, particluarly when we have a new release where lots of issues may need follow up like 10.1.3.
    On the how tos that require editing the XML, normally that is because we don't have access to do the configuration in the application server control or the command line tooling. In general I recommend you use ASC console or the command line tooling - admin.client.jar or our ant tasks - for configuration as you are right that it is the most consistent and accurate way to configure the environment. This doc book gives a sense of what that tooling works for:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_03/web.1013/b14432/admin.htm#sthref68
    including ant tasks:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_03/web.1013/b14431/anttasks.htm#sthref164
    However, unlike the previous release of OAS where editing the XML files often had unexpected consequences on other instances in the cluster because of a central managed repository concept that the older release had, in 10.1.3 that concept is no longer there so editing the XML files generally works fine both in stand-alone and managed. Again, in general we recommend using the tooling but my guess is if you have found a how to that requires editing the XML files, I suspect the tooling doesn't support it yet.
    Out of curiousity, I would be also interested in which one you found that had that - was it the JCA one again?
    Mike.

  • NEWS: Oracle to open-source TopLink in Eclipse

    TopLink Forum users,
    Oracle has proposed the creation of the Eclipse Persistence Platform project in Eclipse to deliver a comprehensive persistence platform. Oracle will lead this open source project and will contribute the source and test cases of its successful Oracle TopLink product to provide a starting point for the project.
    Oracle will continue to deliver its award winning Oracle TopLink product, offer support, and enhance its capabilities to meet the needs of customers. Oracle TopLink will be built on the Eclipse Persistence Platform and will extend it with advanced integration into the Oracle Application Server.
    Read the Press Release and the FAQ for more information.
    I thought it would be best to also announce it here on this forum so that any additional questions or concerns not addressed by the FAQ can be discussed.
    Doug

    Does this mean that the Eclipse foundation will have
    a say in the future roadmap of Oracle Toplink or will
    Oracle continue to drive the roadmap ?The road map will be a developed in public as is done on all open source projects with input from the community. Typically the project team will come up with a road map that they put out for review and it's refined based on feedback. This is what we've been doing on the Eclipse Dali JPA Tools project.

  • Open source monitoring tool for oracle Database

    Please suggest me any opensource tool to monitor the health, availability and performance of the Oracle Database that can be accesed through web client

    Robert,
    Thanks for the update, ya i basically need the tool to monitor the DB, but at the same time, if CPU is going high due to any query or any other reason, we must get the alert, the tool currently we are using triggers a mail for both, DB as well as CPU when it goes high, similar one is needed
    ThanksGrid control or database control will do this for you, there is a rather big however, er however. Being notified is a part of the diagnostics pack functionality (ludicrously and unjustifiably IMO). That means a license cost (unless you are already licensed for it). nagios does this as others have said as do shell scripts. I'm not aware of an open source tool that does all you want without scripting though.

    * Encapsulates OCI (Oracle Call Interface which is powerful but complex)
    * Hides OCI complexity
    * Proposes instead a simple, readable and reusable API
    * Offers up to 310 simple and straightforward APIs.
    Introduction
    Current version : 2.3.0 (2008-03-30)
    Main features
    * Data binding
    * Integrated smart define and fetch mecanisms
    * Full Unicode support on all platorms
    * Multi row fetching
    * Binding array Interface for fast and massive bulk operations
    * Reusable Statements

    * PL/SQL blocks
    * PL/SQL Ref cursors and Nested tables
    * LOB (BLOBs/ FILEs)
    * Supports lobs > 4Go
    * Long datatype (piecewise operations)
    * Provides "All in one" Formatted functions (printf's like)
    * Smallest possible memory usage
    * Date/time management
    * Timestamps and Intervals support
    * Error handling
    * Describe database schema objects
    * Access columns by index or name

    Don't give up just because there are other options out there.
    Adobe is only giving up the free tool for education purposes, or unemployed developer.  You didn't say if you were one of those.
    I believe over time there will be plenty of room for alternate IDE approaches that support the Flex Framework; and in fact there are quite a few options already out there.
