Oracle Portal Or Webcenter

Hello All,
We have Oracle Portal 10.1.4 implemented for our intranet and it works fine. we have been using for last 2 years. Now we like to have the web2.0 apps like
forums, wiki, voip to improve our employees interaction. The suggestion s below from the webcenters blog helps to select technology if it for a new implementation.
http://blogs.oracle.com/webcenter/ .
How ever can any one please explain is it a good choice to move to webcenter  from oracle portal for the new requirements like forums ,wiki,voip.etc..
if we we have a enough time to develop application for forums, and blogs (sure it could be done through portal) is it worth to go for a webcenter?
we have only less contents on the portal most of them are static content managed by portal admins.
Please suggest me on this technology migration/selection..
Thanks
-Prem

Hi,
We are using Webcenter Framework for a client who is already onto Oracle Portal.
It is really a good product built by Oracle. You can surely migrate to webcenter considering the following points:
Easy Integration and building of Wiki, Blogs, Chat, Forum
Very Easy to build, fast development
Webcenter comes with its own sample for Discussion Forums, Wiki (We have tried and tested them it works fine)
Support for Oracle Portal will be removed in near future and Oracle itself supports migrating to Webcenter or BEA Weblogic portal (since they have now bought BEA)
Can migrate to webcenter if you do not have to create new pages frequently (unlike portal where you can create new pages / sub-pages on the fly, creating pages in Webcenter application will make you deploy the application again after building it.)However, there are some things which you will need to keep in mind:
Webcenter is fairly new and as a result there are some bugs in the 10g version
11g is out for beta testing and hopefully there are a lot many improvements and I did see some more features (would be wise to migrate to 11g)
We are facing some memory issues with webcenter applications but mainly because of using ADF Portlets in large numbers. (Hope to solve that soon)Hope these points are helpful.

    Sachin,
I'm afraid there will not be any upgrade path from any Oracle Portal product to WebCenter Portal.
Hopefully, a partner or another customer will develop a possible scenario or some service to migrate in your case WebLogic Portal to WebCenter.
I know there is such an initiative for migrating Oracle Portal to WebCenter, but I haven't heard of such an initiative for WLP.
    Good luck in your search.

  • Use 11g portlet in Oracle Portal or WSRP1 in WebCenter application fails

    Hi,
I build a portlet as in the example at http://download.oracle.com/otndocs/tech/webcenter/files/owc_r11_portlet_bridge_demo.html and try to consume it from Oracle Portal. This is failing with a connection to the server failed error in the browser. I then tried to consume it in a webcenter application as wsrp2 and it works correctly. If i change to wsrp1 it fails with the same error. In the logging i see the following error:

Does this mean wsrp1 is no longer supported with 11g because of client side ajax? Would this mean that Oracle Portal consuming 11g portlets is out of the question?
    Kind Regards,
    Andre Jochems

Thank you for the clear answer. Just curious .... if Portal 11g supports wsrp 2 will it be possible to have a portlet generate events and link those in portal to page parameters which in turn can be linked to portlet input parameters as is possible with a pdk java portlet? In other words, ... can the inter portlet communication be set/edited/wired at runtime in Portal instead of design time as is the case with WebCenter?
Also if Portal 11g will have these features what is the added value of WebCenter, aside from not needing the extra infrastructure to run Portal?
While i am at it, ... how will the skin and stylesheets be handled when a 11g rich faces portlet is rendered in Portal, will it keep its nice looks? Can they be mapped to portal defined styles for portlets to adapt the style to the surrounding portal?
    Kind Regards,
    Andre Jochems

  • Oracle Portal 11g, Oracle WebCenter Suite or Oracle WebLogic Portal ?

Witch of these technologies, Oracle Portal 11g,
Oracle WebCenter Suite or Oracle WebLogic Portal ?
is the future product of oracle ?
I am going to use portal but I don't know witch of these product is the correct one.
I need help to clarified it. As i am going to use portal I want to use the one that oracle intend to support

    Hi Harish,
There are lot differences are available when you compare these three products, some them are
    Oracle Web Center Suite
Comprises of various components such as Web Center Interaction,Oracle Entitlement Server,Oracle Personalization Server an Ensemble(for proxying content and mashups) and chat server, wiki server, blog server, forum etc are available with web center suite. The collaboration tools are out of the box,so you dont require to redevelop anything to enable collaboration for your site.Basically webcenter is more powerful when used to develop intranet sites rather than a website which requires less collaboration.
    Oracle Portal 10g
Oracle Portal 10g is the primary oracle portal product before oracle bought BEA.The main difference is the architecture and framework,Oracle Portal uses sql/plsql intensively for processing the page as all their pages are developed from browser.Every thing you develop is streaming that is queried from DB in contrast with weblogic portal which has the feature of file based portal which is faster compared to the streaming(persistent desktops). The architecture is different compared to weblogic and webcenter. For ex:There are sql and pl/sql portlets which can be developed very faster which not there in the other two platforms.
    Oracle Weblogic Portal 10.3
It is hot in the market right now and development is easier and architecture supports both file based and streaming, the primary features of all the portal product are more or less same but webcenter has more collaborative features.Weblogic portal is very stable as it is on WLS which is a stable weblogic server.
I prefer if you have any previous experience on any of these products then built on that one.Else start with weblogic portal which is easier to startwith compared to others.

  • Oracle Portal 11.1.1.6 with OAM 11.1.1.5

    Hi All,
I have the following customer requirement.
Oracle Portal 11.1.1.6 which is deployed on WebLogic Server 10.3.6
    Oracle Access Manager 11.1.1.5.0
    Oracle Internet Directory 11.1.1.6.0
The customer wants to have Single Sign On for the Oracle Portal Application. This is my understanding about the Architecture.
Oracle HTTP Server (with WebLogic Proxy Plug-in) talks to Oracle Portal
Oracle HTTP Server (the same above with WebGate) talks to Oracle Access Manager
Oracle HTTP Server has Oracle Web Cache
Oracle Access Manager talks to OID
Oracle Portal talks to OID with OID Authenticator
When I went through the Oracle Portal documents, they give steps for Oracle Portal which is deployed on Oracle Application Server but not with WebLogic.
    My questions
    1) Do I need to configure OID Authenticator at myrealm of WebLogic Domain (which hosts Oracle Portal) to connect to OID?
    2) Is there anything more I need to do to integrate Oracle Portal with OID (Meaning running pl/sql scripts or any)?
    3) Kindly advice me about the flow of Oracle HTTP Server, Oracle Web Cache, Oracle Web Gate to OAS and Oracle Portal?
    Thank you

    Hi Somerset,
I am going through the similar problems as you are so was able to find some high level answers (although still have problems implementing.)
    As for the questions:
    1.
Yes, you can check the details here:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17904_01/webcenter.1111/e12405/wcadm_security_sso.htm#WCADM8176
Chapter 30.2.4.1 Configuring the Oracle Internet Directory Authenticator, item 9)
    2.
This is in no way a complete list, as it is still not working for me, but some of it:
OAM:You need to set up host identifier, resources(urls) to protect, define schemas and policies
OHS: Need to set portal name in mod_wl_ohs.CONF
Domain-level jps-config.xml: Needs to be set as per
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E15586_01/doc.1111/e15478/opssadf.htm, appendix c,

This graphic explains it I believe:
Same doc as above, at the beginning.

You can also check the thread I have started describing my setup/issue:
    OHS/OAM/Portal SSO integration -  mod_wl_ohs.conf problem
    Hope this helps!
    ZoranZoran,
What you are tryiing to accomplish is the different than what Somerset's. Yours is the Oracle webcenter portal vs. Somerset's is the Oracle Portal.
For The road map of Oracle Portal integrating with Oracle Access Manager there is no other way than what I explained. ;)

  • How to put a pdf file in Oracle portal?

I want to put a pdf file in Oracle portal. But how I do it?

Are you using Oracle Portal, or Oracle WebCenter Portal?
In Oracle Portal, you can go to edit mode (use the link or add ?_mode=16 to the url) and create a file item.
In WebCenter Portal, you need to add the content to WebCenter Content (default content repository for WebCenter Portal) and use something like the content presenter to show the content on a page.

  • WebLogic Portal vs Oracle Portal

Anyone know the differences in term of features of WebLogic Portal and Oracle Portal?
    i) WebLogic Portal supports Web 2.0 while Oracle Portal doesn't?
ii) Oracle Portal provides SSO to oracle applications while WebLogic Portal doesn't?
    Any other different features?
    Please advise, thanks.

There are lots of differences, but I think you should post your question in the WebCenter and Web 2.0 Technology forum with some additional detail as to why you are asking:
    WebCenter Portal
For example, are you making a technology choice for a particular project? What portal requirements do you have? What are the skillsets of those who will be implementing, etc.
The long term strategy is to converge on the WebCenter product, but there are nuances that may make other portal products a better fit in the short-term.

  • Oracle Web Center Suite and Oracle Portal

1)What is Oracle Portal and why it is used?
2)What is Oracle Web Center Suite and why it is used?
3)What is the difference between Oracle Portal and Oracle Web Center Suite?

    1) Oracle Portal is the Portal product that was deployed together with the application server before weblogic server. It is still used a lot for corporate intra and extranets. It is mosly used for intranets and extranets. When you bought the licence for the application server you automaticly had the licence for Oracle Portal. That's why it is so popular.
Oracle portal is not realy standard based. You mostly will create portlets with PL/SQL or PDK and not realy use the JSR168 standard.
No with Oracle Portal 11g you can consume JSR168 portlets using WSRP.
    2) Oracle WebCenter suite is the next strategical choose of oracle in portal software. Webcenter is an enterprise 2.0 portal environment while oracle portal is more web 1.5 and has limited web 2.0 stuff. Oracle Portal comes with a complete UI for the user to use to create websites and groups but webcenter is more a framework to incoorporate enterprise 2.0 features into your own fusion web application. Webcenter suite comes with Webcenter spaces. THis is a complete UI to create collaborative websites.
Webcenter framework is a powerfull framework to create complete enterprise 2.0 sites.
    3) The difference... Oracle Portal is an old product and will not be developt anymore. I've heard portal 11g will be the last version meaning support will stop at 2014. Webcenter is a new product to create state of the art enterprise 2.0 websites.
Oracle portals is not build on standard and is not realy standardbased meaning is you develop portlets for portal you will not be able to use them in other portals.
Webcenter on the other hand is completly standard based. It is JSR168 compliant and in the near future it will also support JSR286.
Oracle portal is PL/SQL based while webcenter is completly java based, based upon the ADF framework from oracle.
Because WebCenter is based upon the ADF framework you can use the complete ADF framework for your application. For example consuming webservices are very easy in webcenter. If you are using a service oriented architecture you will have lots and lots of work to integrate it with portal. With webcenter this is peace of cake.
    Hope this helps you :)

  • Does OEM Grid Control 10g support monitoring Oracle Portal 10g?

    Dear expert,
It seems OEM GC 10g could monitor WebCenter, Weblogic portal and even Websphere portal, but I could not find any info for Oracle Portal. So,
    1.     Does OEM GC support to monitor Oracle Portal 10g? If not, does it support Oracle Portal 11g?
    2.     If does not support Oracle Portal, then is there any workaround for it? E.g. if it’s feasible through “web appliation”?
Any comment and docs are welcome.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Rob,
    Thanks for your help.
BTW, I have another question for your reply, that what do u mean by “You can use Oracle Enterprise Manager to monitor and manage OracleAS Portal”?
Do you mean OEM AS Console or OEM GC? Boz I only find these metrics from OEM AS Console, which mentioned in this doc. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B16240_01/doc/em.102/b25987/oracle_portal.htm#CHDFJHDD
If these metrics only available in AS Console, then how to let the OEM send out email notification if critical threshold is over?
    Thank you.

  • Using Page/Portlet level  BackingFile based approach in Oracle Portal 11g

    Hi,
I have a portal application that is running on Weblogic Portal 10.2, which is based on portlet/page level backing files. We are looking to upgrade to 11g now.
I installed the Oracle 11g instalation (with web center) but that does not support any of the weblogic's backing file based portlets.
I am not sure if i needed to install Oracle Portal 11g or is there also a separate weblogic portal 11g that we can upgrade to?
If Oracle Portal 11g is what i need to install, then is thre a way we can continue to support the weblogic backing file based portlets in Oracle Portal 11g?
    Thanks,

The new WebCenter portlet container does not, by default, directly support WebLogic Portal-style .portlet files and their corresponding WLP-specific features (i.e. backing files, WLP-native IPC, forked render, etc.) However, the WebCenter portlet container is a full java portlet 2.0 (JSR 286) and WSRP 2.0 container. Many things you could do with backing files and WLP-specific technology can be done with JSR 286 java portlet classes.
Additionally, WebCenter portal framework, spaces, and ADF contains a WSRP 2.0 complaint consumer. So, you can keep your WebLogic Portal server and application running, and consume the individual portlets into a WebCenter webapp over WSRP. See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/webcenter.1111/e10148/jpsdg_pages.htm#CIHDCBGC for more information. You WLP webapp's WSDL URL will normally be of the format http://<host>:<port>/<webapp>/producer?WSDL, e.g. http://localhost:7001/www/producer?WSDL

  • Consuming SharePoint WSRP with OracleAS Portal

    Hi,
i hope, this is the right place for the topic.
We are trying to integrate our SharePoint Server into our Oracle Portal 10.1.4 by using the Microsoft SharePoint WSRP Producer.
The producer seems to be up and running. (The wsdl-file and all of the depending files were accessible.) But when registering an new Provider, it fails fetching the Services with the following error stack:

The server is definitely up and running.
Btw. we can consume other WSRP-Portlets without problems with Oracle Portal Server and GlassFish (using Portlet Container Driver and WSRP).
Does anybody have experiences on consuming WSRP from the SharePoint Server (e.g. with the WebCenter Application) or does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

  • Oracle Portal 11 and WSRP 2.0 portlets

    Hello.
I have found Oracle Portal 11g can't consume WSRP 2.0 portlets.
I create and deploy ADF Faces Portlet into Weblogic Server
    as shown in http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12839_01/portal.1111/e10238/pdg_java_intro.htm#CHDFDDBG.
I register WSRP 1.0 producer using Jdeveloper 11g. Then I register that producer using Portal 11g. When I add portlet from the
producer into portal page it's possible to view the portlet.
But when I register WSRP 2.0 producer in JDeveloper 11g and then register that producer in Portal 11g, and then add same portlet
into portal page it's impossible to view the portlet.
Tell me please. Can Oracle Portal 11g consume WSRP 2.0 portlets or not?
    Many thanks, Andrew

    Hi Pedro
Make sure that the Domain on which you are deploying this application has the module loaded/deployed by name "oracle.webcenter.skin". Within your domain/config/config.xml file you should have this module loaded:
    <library>
    <name>[email protected]</name>
    <target>AdminServer</target>
    <module-type>ear</module-type>
    <source-path>C:\oracleWebCenter11111\jdeveloper/webcenter/modules/oracle.portlet.server_11.1.1/oracle.webcenter.skin.ear</source-path>
    <deployment-order>300</deployment-order>
    <security-dd-model>DDOnly</security-dd-model>
    </library>
When you created this WLS Domain, did you checked the right facets in the first couple of screens or did you just created a bare WLS Domain. Looks like mostly you may not have the above module, because the error stack trace does complain about this:
    Unresolved application library references, defined in weblogic-application.xml: Extension-Name: oracle.webcenter.skin, Specification-Version: 11.1.1, exact-match: false
Incase if this module is deployed, make sure that the version is correct and matches with the one defined in weblogic-application.xml file.
Another possibility. Is this is CLUSTER Domain...? If YES, then deploy your app only to managed server and not admin server, because by default all modules are deployed only to cluster(managed servers) and not admin server.
