Oracle Rac 11.2.0.3 doubts

Hi experts,
Current system info:
server 1 with Redhat 6.5 and Orale ASM with SAP ECC 6  GRID 11.2.0.3 standalone installation
Target system info:
Server 1 and server 2 running  RAC 11.2.0.3 with SAP ECC 6  and RedHat 6.5 GRID  with cluster
We are trying to convert our current system to oracle RAC but have some doubts.
We are following  "Configuration of SAP NetWeaver for Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 and Oracle Real Application Clusters 11g Release 2: A Best Practices Guide"  so:
On page 29 It says: "Prepare the storage location for storing the shared ORACLE_HOME directory in the cluster. The Oracle RDBMS software should be installed into an empty directory, accessible from all nodes in the cluster" Same thing for ORACLE_BASE for the RDBMS, SAP subdirectories (sapbackup, sapcheck, sapreorg, saptrace, oraarch etc.) and homedirectories for SAP users ora<SID> and <SID>adm to a shared filesystem.
1.-Can we just use NFS for sharing them? or what is the recommended software on REDHAT for doing it?
'cause on note 527843 it says:
You must store the following components in a shared file system (cluster, NFS, or ACFS) here it says we can, but down the note on section linux says:
RAC 11.2.0.3/4 (x86 & x86_64 only):
Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.3/4 + ASM/ACFS 11.2.0.3/4 (Oracle Linux 5, Oracle Linux 6, RHEL 5, RHEL 6, SLES 10, SLES 11)
Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.3/4 + NetApp NFS or
Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.3/4 + EMC Celerra NFS
It does not mention just NFS.
2.-In our system test, we want to backup all oracle configuration files on file systems and then delete Oracle Grid to Install GRID with cluster option, then install RDBMS with rac option and then follow the guide, is that correct?
Regards

Hi Ramon,
1.-Can we just use NFS for sharing them? or what is the recommended software on REDHAT for doing it?
'cause on note 527843 it says:
You must store the following components in a shared file system (cluster, NFS, or ACFS) here it says we can, but down the note on section linux says:

Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.3/4 + NetApp NFS or
Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.3/4 + EMC Celerra NFS
It does not mention just NFS.
NFS mount as suggest in SAP documentation should work. The use of ACFS always requires a special Oracle Grid Infrastructure (GI) Patch Set Update (PSU). Oracle Support Note 1369107.1 contains details about which GI PSU is required when you use ACFS with a specific RHEL update, service pack from SLES or UEK version of Oracle.
2.-In our system test, we want to backup all oracle configuration files on file systems and then delete Oracle Grid to Install GRID with cluster option, then install RDBMS with rac option and then follow the guide, is that correct?
You may perform DB backup using backup tools and then scrap the existing Grid setup. Configure RAC and then restore the backup into the new configuraiton as per SAP guidelines under
Configuration of SAP NetWeaver for Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2 with Oracle Real Application Clusters 11g Release 2
Hope this helps.

    2) What is the recommended Private Cluster Interconnect for Oracle RAC ? GiG ethernet or SCI with RSM ?

    4) How the Interconnect traffic gets distributed amongest the multiple GigaBit ethernet Interconnects ( For oracle RAC) , & is anything required to be done at oracle Rac Level to enable Oracle to recognise that there are multiple interconnect cards it needs to start utilizing all of the GigaBit ethernet Interfaces for transfering packets ?

Can any one pls confirm if it's possible to configure
2 or more Gigabit Ethernet interconnects ( Sun
    Cluster 3.1 Private Interconnects) on a E6900
cluster ?Yes, absolutely. You can configure up to 6 NICs for the private networks. Traffic is automatically striped across them if you specify clprivnet0 to Oracle RAC (9i or 10g). That is TCP connections and UDP messages.
It's for a High Availability requirement of Oracle
    9i RAC. i need to know ,
    1) can i use gigabit ethernet as Private cluster
interconnect for Deploying Oracle RAC on E6900 ? Yes, definitely.
    2) What is the recommended Private Cluster
Interconnect for Oracle RAC ? GiG ethernet or SCI
with RSM ? SCI is or is in the process of being EOL'ed. Gigabit is usually sufficient. Longer term you may want to consider Infiniband or 10 Gigabit ethernet with RDS.
    3) How about the scenarios where one can have say 3 X
    Gig Ethernet V/S 2 X SCI , as their cluster's
Private Interconnects ? I would still go for 3 x GbE because it is usually cheaper and will probably work just as well. The latency and bandwidth differences are often masked by the performance of the software higher up the stack. In short, unless you tuned the heck out of your application and just about everything else, don't worry too much about the difference between GbE and SCI.
    4) How the Interconnect traffic gets distributed
amongest the multiple GigaBit ethernet Interconnects
( For oracle RAC) , & is anything required to be done
at oracle Rac Level to enable Oracle to recognise
that there are multiple interconnect cards it needs
to start utilizing all of the GigaBit ethernet
Interfaces for transfering packets ?You don't need to do anything at the Oracle level. That's the beauty of using Oracle RAC with Sun Cluster as opposed to RAC on its own. The striping takes place automatically and transparently behind the scenes.
    5) what would happen to Oracle RAC if one of the
Gigabit ethernet private interconnects fails It's completely transparent. Oracle will never see the failure.
Have tried searching for this info but could not
locate any doc that can precisely clarify these
doubts that i have .........This is all covered in a paper that I have just completed and should be published after Christmas. Unfortunately, I cannot give out the paper yet.
    thanks for the patience

  • Oracle rac 11g installation

    Hi
Am planning to install oracle RAC 11g on linux server. Have doubt on installation of clusterware or grid infrastructure first .?
I think grid infrastructure covers clusterware and ASM both and then oracle 11g software to be installed.
But how to download grid insfrastructure software. Will it come with oracle 11g software..? or need to download it seperately.?
Because when i try to download oracle RAC 11g which gives link to download the 11g software not grid.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
Its called "oracle one node rac"  you will find plenty of documents on metalink, extract is below, hope this helps you to understand the differences.
Oracle RAC Database : Oracle RAC database is a clustered database. It can have more than one instance running on one or more hosts. To make is database RAC , there is another software needs to be installed called Oracle Grid infrastructure which takes care of multinode sync, ASM, Oracle restart etc. Oracle GI is necessary as a base of Oracle RAC. In Oracle RAC, the load is balanced across multiple instance of databases running on different nodes. This is best for Production database. Failure of any instance is abstracted from user and forwarded to another instance from the database server pool. No of instances can be controlled using Policy Managed or Admin Managed.
Oracle RAC One Node : Some time we need to have RAC databases but donot need many instances, why? Simple answers to it is leverage the high availability of RAC. The Oracle RAC One node is a RAC DB runs on one host. The advantage is it saves your resource, can to converted to full RAC any time, Cluster fail over i.e. the Database instance is moved to new instance in case of any failure on host known as Instance Relocation, easy to upgrade etc. This type of database is well suited for small production and dev/test environments.

  • Oracle Rac On Vmware

I have successfully installed Oracle Rac clusterware and database on Vmware using Oracle Red-Hat enterprise Linux -5.
I have a doubt here, that when I restart my setup the disks in Asm are not mounted automatically during service start, so I have to first manually mount my disks in ASM instance.
The thing goes smooth after re-issuing the command
    ./crsctl start -all
    My Database instance goes up
So I have a question on How to configure the ASM instance so that the Disk mounts automatically when the service is starting up.
    Thanks,
    Varun

please check value of ASM_DISKGROUPS parameter in ASM pfile.
ASM_DISKGROUPS specifies a list of names of disk groups to be mounted by an Automatic Storage Management instance at instance startup or when an ALTER DISKGROUP ALL MOUNT statement is issued.

    Hi Oleg,
    many thanks for the answer.
My doubt is on the right service name specificaton.
    I create 2 service unique name for istance 1 (racistnt1) ed istance 2 (racistnt2)
I use srvctl command for create these.
In tnsnames must by use on node 1
    (service_name = racsvr1)
    (istance_name = racistnt1)
    or
    (service_name = racsvr) --> cluster service name
    (istance_name = racistnt1)
In tnsnames must by use on node 2
    (service_name = racsvr2)
    (istance_name = racistnt2)
    or
    (service_name = racsvr) --> cluster service name
    (istance_name = racistnt2)
    Steps Install OWB.
    1. instal OWB on node 1 --> OK
    2. copy rtrepos.properties from node 1 to node 2 --> OK
    3. sqlplus owbrep SQL>@start_service.sql -->OK (i test it without start service too)
    4. lunch reposinst.sh on node 2 --> KO
the choose 'Registera Application Cluster (RAC) istance' don't appear

  • Distributed Transaction Processing Services in Oracle RAC 11.2

    Hi,
Do we have to set the DTP parameter to TRUE for workload services that are going to be used for distributed transaction processing?
    Something like this ...
    srvctl modify service -d crm -s xa_01.service.us.oracle.com -x TRUE
Oracle 11.2 document is not very clear on this requirement. At one stage it says...
"Tightly coupled XA transactions no longer require the special type of singleton services (that is, Oracle Distributed Transaction Processing (DTP) services) to be deployed on Oracle RAC database. XA transactions are transparently supported on Oracle RAC databases with any type of services configuration."
But at the end of the same section...
"An external transaction manager, such as OraMTS, coordinates DTP/XA transactions. However, an internal Oracle transaction manager coordinates distributed SQL transactions. Both DTP/XA and distributed SQL transactions must use the DTP service in Oracle RAC."
So do we have to use DTP services with RAC or not?
    Thanks,
    -Sanjeev
    Edited by: user12219014 on 28 Jan, 2011 8:04 PM

    Hi Sanjeev,
I have some critical applications using Tuxedo on 10gR1/R2 RAC databases and there is no doubt to have with this versions.
Starting with 11gR1 it seems the main limitation is over...but there are still limitations ! To be honest I will keep the DTP parameter to true after the migration in 11.2 to avoid any problem. It is still recommended even if not mandatory :
To provide improved application performance with distributed transaction processing in Oracle RAC, you may want to take advantage of DTP services. Using DTP services, you can direct all branches of a distributed transaction to a single instance in the cluster. To load balance across the cluster, it is better to have several groups of smaller application servers with each group directing its transactions to a single service, or set of services, than to have one or two larger application servers.
    Also check note 462060.1.
    Best regards
    Phil

It goes also to be installed ORACLE RAC.
My doubt is the following one: Which the steps that I have that to follow so that everything of certain.

  • Problems doing backup in Oracle RAC

I am working with ORacle RAC, version 10G. That thing about Oracle RAC is completely new for me. There is three databases, I'm doing backups using OEM, but here is the problem. We have defined the directory /backup in both nodes. The problem that I have is when I do the backup it's done in one node, example, today I do the backup, it's done in NODE1/backup. The next time I'm going to do a new backup by any reason the aplication (OEM) is pointing to the NODE2/backup. So here is the problem, if I need to use the first backup, I can't use it, because OEM is pointing to NODE2 instead on NODE1. My question is, how can I set the node, with OEM where I want to do backup or retrieve a prevoius backup?
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks a lot forn your suggestion, but I think I should give you more details about my doubt.
The following are the steps for a backup with Oracle Enterprise Manager
    steps
    Thru OEM
    Maintenance
    BACKUP/RECOVERY
    Schedule Backup
    Archive Logs (Whole Database, etc.)
Then here I click override current settings, by the way, the default is spaces, so I type /backup, but problem is that directory exist in both node, Node1 and Node2, I'm working with oracle 10G, RAC, in a operating system AIX 5.3.
Then I click Compressed Backup Set, and that's all what I'm doing. But the problem is, sometimes the backup is done in Node1 and other in Node2. And if I need to restore from any previous backup that was done in NODE2, and the application (OEM) is pointing to NODE1, and can not use that previous backup. So, my question is how can I control this, using OEM. I mean, How can I set the Node, to identify in which node the backup will be done, or in which node is the backup I'm going to restore.
    Thanks again

In oracle rac, If user query a select query and in processing data is fetched but in the duration of fetching the particular node is evicted then how failover to another node internally?

The query is re-issued as a flashback query and the client process can continue to fetch from the cursor. This is described in the Net Services Administrators Guide, the section on Transparent Application Failover.

I had this problem and resolved it by transporting the file to the installation server with the correct ftp datatype (binary).
On page 54 of the install guide (..Server\Oracle_Business_Intelligence\doc\doc\bi.1013\b31765.pdf) that comes with the installation files, there is an instruction to make sure that any ftp activity is done in binary.
This may not have occured with the license.xml file if you use a tool which offers the "feature" of automatic datatype recognition.
    Hope this helps.

  • Oracle Upgrade from Oracle RAC 9.2.0.6 to Oracle 10.2.0.4

    Hi All,
Currently, we are running 4 node Oracle RAC environment with below mentioned configuration.
    OS: Sun Solaris 5.9
    Hardware: Sun E2900
    Oracle Version: 9.2.0.6
    Veritas Cluster Server: 4.1
We want to upgrade Oracle version to 10g, and currently analyzing the options to perform this. The current database size is 1TB appx and we want to spend minimum application shutdown time running on this database.
As part of upgrade, we also need to upgrade Veritas Cluster Server from 4.1 to 5.1 to support Oracle 10g. It would be great help,, if someone can pass some guideline to perform this task.
We are currently thinking about piecemeal approach, where we can upgrade each node individually and then put them back to cluster. There are some complexities involved, and its really high risk approach.
Thanks a lot in advance for help
    Regards,
    Manoj

Orcale 10g RAC requires you to install Oracle Clusterware. Oracle Supports running it along side a 3rd party clustering software. Not sure why you're so anxious to upgrade Veritas Clusterware when it will be trivial on the 10g db hosts.

Try this. It worked for me.
Please keep in mind that you will need wait till each step finishes successfully before move to next one
For Step1 and 2, you can skip node(s) on which you didn't execute root.sh yet.
Step 1: As root, run "$GRID_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -verbose -deconfig -force" on all nodes, except the last one.
Step 2: As root, run "$GRID_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -verbose -deconfig -force -lastnode" on last node. This command will zero out OCR and VD disk also.
Step 3: As root, run $GRID_HOME/root.sh on all node one by one

  • Oracle RAC with ASM install failure

    Hi Guy's
I've just rebuilt an Oracle RAC system, i've built this system many times and have the build documented. I usually follow the build doc to the tee and everything works fine. I have now been asked to rebuild the system to go into the production evironment. This is a two server standard RAC setup using ASM. We have a HP MSA500 shared storage setup. I've run the cluster verification tool and all the checks have come out fine. Whilst installing the clusterware i get a failed error message whilst it try's to confiure the Oracle Clusterware Configuration Assistant.
The error message i get is:

I've done this build many times and never seen this error. From what i've read on the internet it looks like it could be something up with my shared storage but i dont know what.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • ASM instances on 2 node Oracle RAC 10g r2  on Red Hat 4 u1

    Hi all
I'm experiencing a problem in configuring diskgroups under +ASM instances on a two node Oracle RAC.
I followed the official guide and also official documents from metalink site, but i'm stuck with the visibility of asm disks.
I created fake disks on nfs with Netapp certified storage binding them to block device with the usual trick "losetup /dev/loopX /nfs/disk1 " ,
run "oracleasm createdisk DISKX /dev/loopX" on one node and
"oracleasm scandisks" on the other one.
With "oracleasm listdisks" i can see the disks at OS level in both nodes , but , when i try to create and mount diskgroup in the ASM instances , on the instance on which i create the diskgroup all is well, but the other one doesn't see the disks at all, and diskgroup mount fails with :
