iam very eager to learn the oracle rac, for that in my pc i created the 2 virtual machines in vmware workstation and installed redhat linux AS3.0 o.s.
i need a steps to install the oracle 9i rac in these vmware enviornment....

Hi,
I am not sure "shared disks" works with every VMWare Workstation version.
Also CentOS is not a supported OS for Oracle RAC.
I personally would advice taking Oracle Linux (which is also free) and use Virtual Box, because I know shared disks works in there flawlessly:

RAC setup on VMware Workstation is possible?

Is it possible to create a RAC setup on VMware workstation(VMware-workstation-6.5.1-126130) or VMware server is mandatory for such a setup.
My planned RAC setup will as show below.
OS:Enterprise-R5-U2-Server-i386

Oracle Database:10201_database_linux32
I am planning to store OCR and Voting disks on shared RAW devices and database files on ASM.

Yes its possible to install it over workstation. There is as such o difference in both the products except that server is free but workstation is paid. Otherwise, both are virual machine softwares.

Oracle RAC installation failover

Hi,
I have an Oracle RAC installation with 2 nodes with the data stored on a shared OCFS partition. I had a client test the connection using jdbc string for RAC failover. I tried shutting down one of the nodes on the RAC installation and the client could not connect to the oracle cluster database for the next 5 to 10mins.
I understand that the client would failover to the next available listener (On the next retry connection) if the node it is currently listening to has failed. Is there any configuration i should make to increase the failover efficiency?

Server side failover is arranged by setting the remote_listener parameter.
Client side failover is set by using T(ransparent) A(pplication) F(ailover) (9i and higher)
or F(ast)C(onnection)F(ailover). Both are documented in the Net administrators manual for the version you didn't care to mention.
As far as I know, both TAF and FCF are not supported by the JDBC thin driver.

Oracle 11GR2 rac installation in vmware

Hi all experts,
I am installing RAC 11GR2 in VMWARE on OEL 6.3. Everything went smooth but when i tried to configure ASM , i get below messages.
[oracle@RAC1 ~]$ /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure
-bash: /etc/init.d/oracleasm: No such file or directory
I would appreciate if some one can help me out with this.

11gr2 rac installation on vmware runinstaller not able to visible all nodes

Recently I have installed two nodes 11gr2 rac on vmware workstation 6 with OEL 5.4. CRS installation work fine. But after that when I do olsnodes, it's shows only one node. Also, when I try to install oracle database binary, in node selection tab, it's shows only respective nodes and not shows all nodes.

Installation of 11gr2 Grid was successfull or not?
Try to check the status of High Availability service daemon by typing the following command:
./crsctl check cluster. (on all nodes)
The output should look like this:
CRS-4537: Cluster Ready Services is online
CRS-4529: Cluster Synchronization Services is online
CRS-4533: Event Manager is online

Suggestions for Oracle 10g Installation using VMware in Windows XP.

I am using Intel(R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU P8600 @2.4 Ghz with 1.98 GB RAM with Windows XP with 70 GB disk space. I would like to install a 2 node RAC with ASM and if possible also configure a DG for learning and testing purpose.Please advice if this will work using a VMware . Is RAC VM possible only Linux or with Windows as well ?
I think 11g is out of scope since i don't have sufficient memory.
I am new to VMware and have not done any installations or used it till now.
It would be appreciated if you could help with these doubts.
1. How much memory can be allocated to each instances?If i am installing Linux how much memory is required ?
2. what will be the load on the CPU and will i be able to use it without any resource crunch ?
3.Once memory is allocated to VM, can it be claimed back , is it like if i am not starting the VMware services.. i have the full 2 GB in discretion?
4. Can 10g Standard editions be used for learning purposes?
If the above hardware is not sufficient, please suggest a suitable configuration

You do not have sufficient hardware - you will likely need 6GB of RAM or more, plus 100G of disk or more and a multiprocessor machine. Each VM will need at least 2GB of RAM, and once all of the VMs/RAC are installed, the system will be pretty busy running 3 OS's (host and two guests) and two databases. If you do not start up the VMs, all of the memory is available for the host to use. 10g is no longer available for download, you will have to use 11g - yes SE edition is sufficient for learning purposes.

Can I install Oracle VM server on VMware Workstation 7 with linux?

I have installed VMware Workstation 7 on my laptop that already has windows 7 operating system.
Next I installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 on my VMware Workstation 7.
Now am planing to setup a RAC environment.
What should be my next step? The documentation says I need to install VMware server.
Are VMware server and Oracle VM server the same?
can we replace one with other.

your vm ware server is ok.. but you should install same o/s for RAC..
remove the linux and install windows and try RAC node in vmware..
or try install linux

Root.sh failing at node2 during 10g rac installation on vmware

Hi All,
I'm very new to Oracle RAC. I was trying to install 10gr2 rac on vmware. But while running root.sh script at node 2 I'm getting error like "Failure at check of Final Oracle Stack" . For the same I tried a lot to find the solution from this forum and also from other sources but did not get any proper solution. So any help from you experts is highly appreciable. Let me tell you how I'm getting this error.
1.Install vmware and RHEL 4 as guest OS.
2.Create a virtual machine as RAC1 and configured shared storage by adding 5 virtual disks(1-ocr,1-voting,3-asm)
3.Then clone RAC1 to a new virtual machine RAC2.
4.After binding and assigning permissions all raw devices(raw1,raw2,raw3,raw4,raw5) are available in both the virtual machines.
5. Then create user equivalence for both the system and each node is reach from other node also.
6. Now when I tried to install Oracle 10gr2 clusterware it got completed at RAC1 and I ran the required scripts but while running root.sh on RAC2 I got the above mentioned error.
I did OCR check at both the nodes and found both are different. Also the cssd.log gives error message like OCR mismatch.
Now here my question is as Firewal is disabled and all the configurations are proper though I'm getting the same error.
Can anyboy provide some suggestion on resolving this issue.

The 1st one is for OCR and the next one is for Voting Disk and the rest are for asm. Also the permission are same across the two virtual machines.

Oracle RAC 10g on VMware

I am installing Oracle RAC on 2 virtual machines using RHEL 3-U7, basically I have been able to install RAC and the software for the database. However when I run dbca to configure ASM, I get
Error When starting ASM instance on node node1
PRKS-1009: Failed to start ASM instance +ASM2 on node1
last line repeats
CRS-1028: Dependency analysis failed because of:
CRS-0223: Resource ora.node1.ASM2.asm has placement errors.
I ran ifconfig and appears to be a VIP on both servers. Is there a reason/solution or a workaround for this issue ?. Thank you in advance for your help

I am installing oracle RAC and ORACLE 11g with QFS or ASM on Solaris 10 , what is recommended to be installed first ?
1-Should I install oracle database first then oracle clusterware and ASM ? OR
2-Install Oracle Clusterware and ASM then oracle database?
Do i need a licence fot ASM or QFS to install them ?
Is there any precaustion or recommendation i should follow before installation ?

Oracle RAC Installation: Unix nodes, Windows ASM

I have a question about configuring Oracle RAC. I have never done any RAC or ASM installation before. Might be a stupid question for some of you.
Is it possible to install Oracle RAC using following options?
2 node RAC using Sun Solaris
Shared Storage using ASM in Windows server
Any additional information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

First of all, do you have a shared storage available to both unix server or you want to use the windows server as a shared storage ?
From the documentation
Single Instance and Clustered Environments:
Each database server that has database files managed by ASM needs to be running an ASM instance. A single ASM instance can service one or more single-instance databases on a stand-alone server. Each ASM disk group can be shared among all the databases on the server. In a clustered environment, each node runs an ASM instance, and the ASM instances communicate with each other on a peer-to-peer basis.
Which means that you need to have ASM instance on every server where you have a database instance.
In case you don't have a shared storage to the unix servers, you have two options - iSCSI or NFS. You can setup the windows machine as an iscsi server and both unix machines as an iscsi clients then you will have shared storage on both unix machines. The other option is to configure the window machine as NFS server and mount the NFS share on both unix machines. Then you can deploy the data files directly at the NFS shared (not supported) or create empty files using dd and use then as device files for ASM.

Cisco ISE installation on VMware Workstation ?

I am trying to install Cisco ISE image through Vmaware Workstation , but after starting VM getting redhat console but not the same console required for setup of actual ISE . Would like to know whether VMware workstation supported for ISE installation as all the cisco docs specifies the image to be mounted on ESX server, then login to client to run setup.. Please help...

I've started installing ISE 1.2 (redhat linux 5 64 bit) , looking at the posts above.. on VMware workstation 9..
1stly I gave 6gb ram ( my laptop has 6 gb ram & 290gb free space ) and started the installation process..
then after the starting stage of checking the requirements of my laptop started and the formatting of the disk began , my lap became very slow & it got hanged there..all my pc processes moved like snails..!! got frustated..
then I restarted my lap and this time I gave 4gb ram .. and it worked fine from then on..
can anyone tell me , if this has to do anthing with the physical memory we give over there in the ise installtion process..does it actually use the entire ram we mention over there..??

All possible System RAM was allocated to the ISE VM, and the ISE VM used ALL of the RAM leaving none for the host OS, thereby slowing the machine to a crawl. Once this Virtual RAM was sized to the ISE minimum of 4GB (leaving 2GB dedicated to the host OS), the machine worked correctly. Yes, the ISE VM will happily use ALL the RAM allocated to it.
This is also the reason that Virtual Box and other "Desktop" class virtualization environments cannot be supported across the board. Nearly every machine hosting VMWare Workstation, Virtual Box, etc... has a different chipset, video card, HD controller, and on, and on...
The best thing to do for your situation is to try to install it. If it works, document your EXACT system configuration and the EXACT virtual configuration so that you may look back to it for future installs. You can also use this information to "tweak" the virtual settings until you get a combination that works for you. This will help to document the configurations that do not work on YOUR desktop environment.

Help requested on FireWire (SBP2) on CentOS 4.5 for Oracle RAC installation

I am running 64-bit CentOS 4.5 (2.6.9-55.EL kernel) on AMD64. I can load the FireWire modules (SBP2, OHCI1394 & IEEE1394) and see the partitions created of the FireWire drive using fdisk -l. The /proc/scsi/scsi correctly shows the drive.
If I create an EXT2 or EXT3 on a partition, it's great. I can read/write on that without any problem. But when I try to perfom the following:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/raw/raw1 bs=8196 count=12000 or any dd on any partition on that drive, I am getting:
ieee1394: sbp2: aborting sbp2 command
scsi4: destination target 0, lun 0
command: Read (10) and then bunches of numbers
ieee1394: sbp2: hpsb_node_write_failed
ieee1394: sbp2: Bus reset in progress -- rejecting command
But the dd finishes and I can see the partitions using fdisk -l
I have the following in the /etc/modprobe.conf file (also tried without serialize_io):
options sbp2 serialize_io=1 exclusive_login=0
Eventually, this problem is stopping me from implementing CRS & Oracle RAC.
Can somebody please tell me what's going on & how I can avoid these errors?

Did you compile the source code which downloaded from Oracle official website:http://oss.oracle.com/projects/firewire/files/source/oracle-firewire-modules-1286.tar.gz ?
Please check the following modules whether it have been loaded on the box.
1,ieee1394.ko
2,ohci1394.ko
3,raw1394.ko
Use "dmesg" to check if the disk connected to the firewire interface has been detected.
