  • Need to understand basics of Oracle RAC and Grid technology, for training

    I need to understand Oracle RAC and Grid infrastructure, from a manager's / training perspective.
    I see links here and here, so a couple questions:
    - what's the basic difference from a layman's (e.g., a manager's) perspective ?
    - What training options are available for a generic 11g DBA to learn this new technology ? I've seen this course from an Oracle partner ("Course:Oracle 11g: RAC and Grid Infrastructure Administration Accelerated Release 2"), for a boat load of money, for 5 days I think. So we're looking for something a little more reasonable (and accessible), e.g., books, online, etc.

    For a very basic definition, RAC is technology that is used by the database and GI is the infrastructure that makes RAC work. In a forum reply, that's probably all what can be said about both. For a very lengthy answer, you should read the links that you have quoted.
    For #2, the course that you are looking at is called Accelerated as it combines two courses in a single week training-RAC(4) and GI(3). So it's a 7 day curriculum that one would be doing in a 5 day course and that should justify its cost. But let me say, it's a really really good course. But on the other side, it can be quite overwhelming for someone who doesn't know about these technologies already. So I shall suggest that you send your team to each course individually and probably after doing some homework . They can start reading the following books,

  • Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0

    Hello,
    Maybe you can help me (new on RMAN backup) in doing this.
    I have configured a single Oracle 10g database to have backup with RMAN with following steps:
    1. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/rman_scripts
    2. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/logs
    3. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/tracking
    4. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/c_backup
    5. $ sqlplus sys/<password> as sysdba
    6. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest_size = 50G scope=both;
    7. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest='${ ORACLE_BASE}/flash_recovery_ area' scope=both;
    8. SQL> alter system set log_archive_dest_10='location= use_db_recovery_file_dest';
    9. SQL> shutdown immediate
    10. SQL> startup nomount
    11. SQL> alter database archivelog;
    12. SQL> alter database open;
    13. SQL> alter database enable block change tracking using file '${ORACLE_BASE}/tracking/rman_ change_track.f';
    14. $ rman target /
    15. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK
    TO '/var/opt/oracle/flash_ recovery_area/ORCL/c_backup/% F';
    16. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    17. RMAN> CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    18. RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
    19. RMAN> exit
    I need to configure incremental backup with RMAN on a two node Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 installation.
    We also use ASM to store database files, and have Oracle software installed on separate file systems (two Oracle roots for Node1 and Node2).
    I have following questions:
    1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
    I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
    2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
    3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
    Below is the script used to run RMAN on the normal Oracle database (without RAC) which I need to change :
    =============================================================================================
    2.0 Oracle backup script: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh
    Use this for daily backups, possiblly as a cron job.
    Once a week run this: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh FULL
    All other days of the week: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh INCREMENTAL
    Note: You may have to change ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_BASE below to match your database.
    =============================================================================================
    #!/usr/bin/ksh
    ORACLE_SID=orcl
    ORACLE_BASE=/opt/app/oracle
    ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/10.2.0/db_1
    PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:/usr/bin
    LOGDIR=${ORACLE_BASE}/logs
    LOGFILE=${LOGDIR}/rman.log
    if [[ $# < 1 ]]
    then
    echo "usage: backup.sh FULL|INCREMENTAL"
    exit;
    fi
    BACKUPTYPE=${1}
    full='FULL'
    incremental='INCREMENTAL'
    if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $full ]]
    then
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
    run {
    backup database;
    SQL 'alter system archive log current';
    backup archivelog all;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    exit;
    eof
    echo ''
    fi
    if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $incremental ]]
    then
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
    run {
    backup database;
    backup incremental level 1 database;
    SQL 'alter system archive log current';
    backup archivelog all;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    exit;

    Hi [email protected],
    Q1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
    A1) With RAC: on the shared storage
    I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
    If you want your backups to be available for both nodes you have to use shared storage or tape using an mml library.
    So if you want to use the FRA for rman backups and the database is on ASM just make ASM the standard for the FRA as well.
    Q2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
    A2) Than you cannot recover in case Node1 is down. Best would be to send your storage admin to a training course so he can manage the clustered raw devices needed for ASM.
    Q3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
    A3) No see A2.

    ( In any order .... and probably the reverse of that given below is appropriate: )
    A: Pass the 1z0-058 exam
    AND
    B: ( Either have authorized (wrt certification) 11g RAC training certified

  • Oracle RAC certification

    hi all ,
    i have OCA and OCP certification for database administrator 10g , i need to take oracle RAC certification 11g
    what is the best scenario should i do .

    Your best option would probably be to upgrade your 10g DBA OCP to 11g DBA OCP with exam 050, then move to 11g RAC with exam 058. This way you do not have to complete additional training.

  • Oracle rac and TDE?

    We are running oracle rac on 10.2.0.3 linux Itanium platform. I am setting up TDE for the first time and I setup my wallet location to be on an ocfs file system so that each node in the cluster will have access to the key. Is that all we will need to do and is this a supported configuration for TDE in a rac environment?
    Do you have to open the wallet on each instance during instance startup when running rac?
    Also we have a physicla standby server configured and I setup the same wallet location on the physicla standby and copied the wallet file over, Is that all we need to do for the standby server?
    Thanks.

    Peter,
    Good info and your video makes everything look easy.
    In addition to the encrypted wallet file (ewallet.p12), I also have a cwallet.sso file in the local file system (not ACFS) on both RAC nodes of my Primary and both Standby nodes.
    If I start the database and then run: SELECT * FROM V$ENCRYPTION_WALLET; it says the wallet status is open. However, as soon as a user tries to connect through our application (using jdbc), I get the "ORA-28365: wallet is not open" errors in the alert log. So then I have to run: ALTER SYSTEM SET ENCRYPTION WALLET OPEN IDENTIFIED BY "<Wallet Password>"; on each node and then users can connect through the application.
    Any ideas why auto-login doesn't work and why everything is grayed out on the Wallet Tab drop down menu in OWM?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    I am searching for Java and Oracle associate video trainings. CBT Nuggets is famous, but I don't like their presentations.

         Oracle Certified Associate (Java) (CX-310-019)             $350      Did anyone bought their products and can give review? I didn't find reviews in Internet.
    Official Oracle trainings are too expensive.

    I have not taken any of their Oracle training. I signed up with them for a 'deal' one time that allowed me to pick any one course*. The Oracle courses were not included so I ended up taking their course for *1D0-541: CIW Database Design Specialist* because that was the only course available for a database topic in the 'deal'. That said I was not particularly impressed with the course. The video was professional enough. However, the course as presented spent a good 75% of the time on SQL. Since SQL is only one of ten sections in 1D0-541, that was ridiculously excessive. I'm confident that the instructor had used material from an 'Intro to SQL' style course for Microsoft SQL Server as the basis of the one I took, and just created a little bit of filler on the other topics to generate the one for 1D0-541.
    That might be an exception to an otherwise great set of courses, but my introduction to their material was not positive. That said, I paid $1 for the deal. I will admit that I probably got more than a buck's worth of benefit from the course. :)
    * Except for any of the courses I might actually have wanted to take.
