Lot's of chatter out there today about VMware's migration program. Below are a few points for customers to consider…
1. Oracle is dedicated to the on-going support of Virtual Iron customers and has enhanced the support offering beyond what was previously available from Virtual Iron. Oracle is pleased to be able to offer its Lifetime Support program for Virtual Iron products, which will extend sustaining support for these products and the Virtual Iron Enterprise Edition products indefinitely. Please refer to the Lifetime Support Policy: Oracle Technology Products on the specific support options for Virtual Iron products. In addition, Oracle has retained Virtual Iron support personnel, so that people who provided support prior to the acquisition will continue to do so going forward.
2. Our intent is to seamlessly combine Virtual Iron's technology with Oracle VM to deliver a product that is unique in the industry both in breadth of functionality, and also depth of features specifically designed to make the full application stack easier to deploy, manage, and support in a virtual environment. Through the combination of Virtual Iron's technology with Oracle VM, customers will be able to benefit from an optimized, efficient application infrastructure with low operating costs. 3. Oracle VM is a free download. Virtual Iron customers can download and start using Oracle VM today. Got my call and was unable to get all my questions answered (my fault had to cut call short), also I was unable to get the tech called back today so i am hoping that I can tomorrow.
Preliminary thoughts/answers seam to point that they will sell you additional licenses if you buy support for all of your existing boxes, plus the ones you want to add. Because I use single processor boxes I am trying to get them to license based on the cpu count instead of by the box. If by the box it doubles my cost.
We talked a great deal about the Oracle VM 2.2 that was released for download and how if compaired to Virtual iron. Oracle is not up to the Virtual Iron level yet but it made some big jumps and will be there pretty soon, by their account. I look forward to seeing the progress and the advances that they will surely incorperate with the huge influx of cash that Oracle will bring.

Support for virtual IP in WKA list

I am attempting to implement Coherence Grid Edition 3.5.3 Patch 7 . It's running on Sun Java 1.6.06 on a Solaris 5.10 machine (which I will call machine A1) which has an ip address 1.2.3.261. Also, there is a virtual IP address 1.2.3.260 which points to this same machine A1, as well as a hostname that maps to the virtual IP address of the machine A1.
(Note: I have mocked up the IP addresses in this post for security reasons).
I am using WKA due to concerns of the local network admins regarding multicast (debatable, but for now let's please assume I need to go with WKA).
If this production machine A1 develops any problem, we can quickly switch to an alternate machine A2. The alternate machine A2 contains automatically replicated copies of all of our important sub-directories (including the coherence xml configuration files), but it does have a different IP.
During a failure of machine A1, we would shut down machine A1, start up machine A2, and reroute the virtual IP to alternate machine A2's true IP. Machine A2 would be supplied a copy of the file-system that A1 had when A1 was shutdown.
We would seek to not have to edit any configuration files on A2. It is difficult to maintain alternate configuration files using our current replication scheme, and any machine-specific customizations are problematic.
Therefore, we would prefer to list the virtual IP of machines A1 and A2 in the WKA list, rather than the true IP of these machines.
However, when I attempt to list the virtual IP in the WKA list...

What exactly is being checked here? Does each Coherence instance expect to see it's own IP listed in the WKA list, and refuse to run if it can't find it's own IP on the list?
Is the instance detecting it's own IP via an operating system call, or is there some way I can influence the instance's sense of what IP it is running on?
Is there any advice for supporting this kind of virtual IP scenario?
I have tried listing the hostname with no better success, because the hostname points to the virtual IP, and therefore has the same effect as listing the virtual IP.
As a workaround, I have altered the WKA list to list of the true IPs of both machines...

... even though both machines will never be up and running at the same time. This workaround avoids the error and the cluster appears to come up. I am not sure if there's any ill effect that at any given time one of these two IPs will never be up and running.
Despite my workaround, true support for virtual IPs would be superior; listing all the true non-virtual IPs in the WKA list means re-editing the list as the hardware changes.

The issue you are seeing actually has little to do with VIP, and more to do with there being multiple IP addresses for us to choose from on your box. For such multi-IP boxes, you'll want to tell us the IP to use, and in your case you want to tell as a VIP. This can be done either by editing your operational configuration file, and including an <address> element within the <unicast-listener> element, or via the tangosol.coherence.localhost system property. For example:

java ... -Dtangosol.coherence.localhost=1.2.3.260If you are using the same operational configuration on all nodes in your cluster then the system property approach is likely preferable, and would only be necessary on the two machines sharing the VIP.
As for using VIP or an extended WKA list, the choice is yours, either will work. If you do go the VIP route, it would obviously be a very bad idea to simultaneously use the same VIP and port at the same time from the two machines.

I have the 9.2.0.2 Windows installation of Oracle on a test PC here. On 9.2.0.2, the CREATE TABLESPACE statement fails when specifying the TEMPORARY clause. Instead I have to use CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE. The difference of course is that the latter creates a locally managed temp ts while the former creates dictionary managed temp ts.
Does anyone know the exact version at which Oracle stopped support for CREATE TABLESPACE ... TEMPORARY - i.e. dictionary managed temporary tablespaces?

Fredrik is correct. My system tablespace is locally managed. I tried his proposed tablespace creation and it did fail "ORA-12913: Cannot create dictionary managed tablespace". So there is the answer.

No Oracle SSO support for POSTing data to protected resource [yet]

Hi,
I am using OHS infront of JBOSS and redirecting all requests from OHS to JBOSS after SSO Authentication.
Everything works fine except that I get 500 error when I try to post data from HTML form.
When i click on a button on a JSP page that submits page with the Form Post, the request goes to the OHS and is not getting forwarded.
OHS log shows the following

This error does no occur in our dev or test environments, only production. A workaround for us was to disable SSO by commenting the line to load it in the file $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf/httpd.conf. The line to comment out looks like: include "/u01/app/oracle/product/mid/Apache/Apache/conf/mod_osso.conf" where the /u01/app... above is the expansion of $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf/mod_osso.conf.
We do not use SSO for our application, so this is not a problem. I next plan to try to figure out why this behaves like this, so I can keep all the server configurations consistent.

Oracle XE support for XMLA

I am about to use Oracle XE as a relational database for Mondrian OLAP Server and JPivot as a front end. I managed to install the schema and samples, and everything works fine except XMLA query. I would appreciate if one gets me an insight in Oracle XE support for XMLA.

I donot have a direct answer. However, I have not seen any discussion of intrinsic support for the "XML for Analysis" web service related to any Oracle database edition. Remember that XE does not support any Enterprise Edition-only features, nor any features from STandard Edition that require Java in the database.
Have you tried the configuration against Oracle Database Enterprise or Standard Edition? If so, how successful were you?
And - you mention that everything works fine except ... perhaps you could expand on the results of the except. IOS - What is going wrong, or what error message are you receiving.

With the official release of WebUtil soon approaching on 10g will this mean that WebUtil will be supported on a 9i achitecture as well?
I have successfully installed the beta version of webutil in a development environment and have been very impressed by its ease of use and functionality. However my bosses are concerened about deploying a beta release on our live 9iAS R2 setup until it is confirmed that Support will be available.
When will WebUtil be officialy released on 10g?
Will Oracle offer support for those using WebUtil on 9i?

I'd like to give Grant the final word on this because he is more involved, but to my understanding and current information, WebUtil will be supported with Oracle Application Server 10g only.
Forms 9i and Forms 10g are not that different in that there is no real migration work needed. For this reason we plan to support Forms10g and Application Server 10g.
The release of WebUtil - again Grant will know better - should be anytime now.

Oracle Support for Virtual Sever

Is it supported to run Oracle databases on Linux virtual servers without using OVM. I have a Linux server(RHEL) which has been virtualized to 3 hosts using strictly virt-install . If I have Oracle issues on those virtual servers will Oracle support this ( we do have support license for Oracle) eventhough we didn't use OVM to create and maintain the virtual hosts.

Oracle 11g support for JDK 1.4

We are planning to migrate from Oracle 10.2.0.3 to Oracle 11.2.0.2. However our application server JDK version is in JDK1.4 and we use ojdbc4.jar for JDBC connectivity.
Please let me know, to migrate to Oracle 11g requires JDK1.5 and ojdbc1.5 or can we continue to stay at JDK1.4 and uses ojdbc4.jar to connect to Oracle11g.

When will Oracle end support for Version 7

We have several servers running Oracle 7.3.4 and we are making upgrade plans.

Java 7 has already been dead for quite a while. While you could still use it for Java apps on your system, Apple blocked its use in browsers long ago. You have to install version 8 if you need Java support for the web.

Does ADF support this with any inuilt feature?
If not, what are the 3rd party libraries that we may need to use?

Oracle.DataAccess support for DBProviderFactory

I have a .NET solution that requires connection to several different database backends. We are abstracting our database code to use the DBProviderFactory, which allows us to change providers without having to write specific code to each of the .NET providers. Code for SQLClient would work the same as OLEDB or Microsoft native Oracle Driver.
I want to be able to use the new Oracle.DataAccess component in the ODP but it does not seem to comply to the System.Data.Common.DBProviderFactory interfaces.
I have not seen any reference to this from Oracle they are stating that the ODP provider is compliant.
How can I use the Oracle.DataAccess objects through the DBProviderFactory?

Hi,
(1) I would like to know if Oracle 9i DB comes with any kind of built in support for Z39.50 protocol.
(2) If the answer is NO, can we achieve the same by installing some other software on the DB server ? Is this kind of setup a proven ( secure and efficient) way of exposing my DB to external search queries over the Internet ?
I also would like to know what is Oracle's official stand on this.

Oracle Workflow is required to be installed in an Oracle database. However, the Business Event System could be used to communicate with non-Oracle databases if they can take event messages from AQ queues.

Oracle 10g support for EM64T and Windows 64-bit

Oracle 10gR1 is certified for Tru64 UNIX 5.1b.
Certification of Oracle 10gR2 for Tru64 UNIX 5.1b.is planned for 1st quarter 2006.
If it does not support directly, is there a patch available etc..No idea, perhaps can you create an iTAR to post the question.
But if you read the metalink note 283751.1 Pre-Install checks for 10gR1 RDBMS (10.1.x) - Tru64 Platforms, you can see that no workaround provide...
