Oracle SE RAC with separate datacenter

Hi all,
I'm wondering. At this moment we have oracle EE with data guard and we are thinking of getting oracle SE in stead.
I would like to have a high availability and we would like to use RAC with SE. We have 2 data centres that are about 3,5 km from each other and there is a direct fibre link between both. Can we do this with oracle SE?
we would like to use HP proliant servers, with 2 sockets and the data will be placed on a new Netapp SAN.
anyone?? I can't find any documentation about this.

Hi,
>> At this moment we have oracle EE with data guard and we are thinking of getting oracle SE in stead.
It is this a Single node or RAC database ??
And what is the database version and platform??

With SE version you not changing the database version??

  • Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?

We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
    All advice / info welcome!

I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!
    Regards,
    Tim

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC with Sun clsuter 3.3 clsetup not showing  ASMDiskGroup RS

    Hello,
I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC on Solaris cluster 3.3 with hardware RAID and ASM
I was able to register rac-famework-rg and crs-framework-rg.
Oracle RAC is up and running (confirmed from crs_stat -t -v)
However, while creating option 5. Automatic Storage Management (ASM) on clsetup, I was getting ERROR: ASM is either not installed or the installation is invalid!
I have created the asm-inst-rg with resource asm-inst-rs and asm-dg-rg with resources asm-dg-fra, asm-dg-data and asm-dg-crs using CLI. Please find the complete clrg and clrs status output below:

Once I reach clsetup option 6: Resources for Oracle Real Application Clusters Database Instances, I was able to select cluster db name, oracle home, SID for both nodes, and it listed the asm-inst-rg and asm-inst-rs for selection of "Specify Oracle ASM Instance Resource".
The problem is the the next selection which is "Specify Oracle ASM Disk Group Resources" which does NOT list any asm-dg-rg or asm-dg-fra or anything, instead, it throws error "No existing disk-group resources available for selection. Run ASM subwizard create new resource(s) and come back to this panel for the selection."
Kindly guide me to create Resources for Oracle Real Application Clusters Database Instances either in CLI or clsetup

Solaris Cluster 3.3 u1 solved the issue.
The problem right now I am facing is IPMP on the public interface.
When I remove the cable on the bge0, the ip on bge0 and the SCAN IP's are plumbed to bge1 which is in sc_ipmp0, but NOT the virtual IP!!! and the listeners on both nodes go offiline!!!
any inputs on the configuration will be highly appreciated..

  • Install Oracle 11G, RAC with VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE on one server?

    Dear Experts,
I'm looking to upgrade my skills, and want to learn more of:
Oracle 11G, RAC, VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE
My server has two quad cores (8 CPU altogether) and 16 gigs of RAM.
Years ago, I took a shots at installing RAC on multiple servers and firewire.
One thing I remember was that after I installed RAC, I was not able to use the database unless I enabled all the RAC processes on the server. So, I was not able to just boot the database and use it in the traditional single server manner.
Which I will also want to do.
    1) Does this symptom/aspect/characteristic of RAC install still exist?
    2) Is it realistic to install all this software on one server?
If so, what is the order of operations for the install?
    3) If I have to prioritize, I'd like to install
Oracle 11G, OBIEE, and APPS R12,
Would installing R12 and OBIEE on the same server present any conflicts or issues?
If not, what is the order of operations for the install?
    11G, R12, then OBIEE?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    1) Does this symptom/aspect/characteristic of RAC install still exist? No.
    2) Is it realistic to install all this software on one server?
If so, what is the order of operations for the install? For learning/traning/demonstration purpose you can Install all these software on same machine.
    3) If I have to prioritize, I'd like to install
Oracle 11G, OBIEE, and APPS R12,
Would installing R12 and OBIEE on the same server present any conflicts or issues?
If not, what is the order of operations for the install?
11G, R12, then OBIEE?There will not be any conflicts. I would suggest you to select vmware or virtual box in order to configure all these sw's.
I have done such a configuration on my laptop with i7 Quad processor, 16GB RAM and 640 GB HDD.
I have Installed 2 node RAC, 2 Node ERP and all are running smoothly without any issues.

  • How to Create Manual Standby for a Oracle 11g RAC with ASM to Single Instan

    Hi All,
I have a task to configure a Single Instance Standby Database with ASM for 2-node Primary RAC+ASM database.
Version using : 11.1.0.6 Oracle 11g --- *" STANDARD EDITION "* Please note datagaurd will not be supported in standard edition.
Primary database - 2 -Node RAC using ASM storage (All datafiles, redologs, controfile and archive logs)
Need to setup a single instance standby database manually and than using scripts to transfer the archive logs from primary server to standby server to do recovery time to time.
Please let me know if there are any configuration document(s) which can help me to set the manual standby? or need your kind help to give your valuable ideas how to go in above situation.
    Thanks in advance

Well if the archive logs are stored in ASM on the primary nodes, you almost definitely want to be using RMAN to access them. Then to transfer between primary and standby there are many options, this is essentially the step that Data Guard takes care of - so if you (and I) are running Standard Edition, this is the part to "worry" about.
I'm not really sure what you mean by this:
As in standard edition the archive destination will be on ASMI don't think the Edition of Oracle (Standard or Enterprise) dictates where and how you store your archive logs, but it's possible I've misunderstood what you mean...SE dictates that database storage for RAC will be ASM, including archive log files. Anything else is not officially supported. I haven't tested but it may be that you can use LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to specify a local filesystem for archive log files as well.
If that doesn't work you'll have to script rman "backup as copy" jobs regularly and then transport the results of that.

By the way, it seems Robert has been pretty helpful, it's polite to give him some points dude. And since this is your thread, not mine, give him a "helpful" from me too :p
    El DBA
Incidentally if you are forced down the RMAN backup as copy route then this will likely throw your current backup retention strategy somewhat, you'll need to think carefully about when an archivelog can be deleted following backup, how many times it might be backed up and so on. I do understand, and have argued for, the use of SE RAC. I also understand and have argued for and implemented manually managed standby a number of times. However by the time your primary database is a RAC instance and you need a standby for DR etc then you really have to look very seriously at whether Standard Edition is still the right investment or not. You will be spending a lot of DBA time managing and troubleshooting this, and you will find that it is less reliable than the off the shelf solution. I suspect that you are very close to the point where an EE installation becomes a worthwhile investment here.

    Hello All,

    2. Can i use LUN's for RAC?
    Please let me know.

    user8302436 wrote:

    1. Can we go with 11gR2 RAC without ASM?Yes. But it would be plain stupid IMO. Like racing a superbike and deciding to not wear a helmet, kneepads and safety gear.
ASM only has advantages. It would very foolish to throw these out of the window. If you do - well, then you will likely stuff up the rest of the RAC architecture too, like using a 100Mbit Ethernet for the Interconnect, decide that private switches for the Interconnect is not worth it and so on.
And then blame the lack of robustness and performance of that RAC cluster on Oracle?
    2. Can i use LUN's for RAC? Of course. ASM/Oracle does not care what the actual device is. It can be scsi target device. It can be a LUN made visible via EMC's Powerpath or Linux's Multipath. It can be character bound raw devices. Etc.
The kernel and driver stack deals with the technical side of that device - and that device (LUN or whatever) is then made visible to application s/w (like ASM and the Oracle RDBMS). This software uses the standard I/O interface of the kernel for reading from and writing to that device.

  • Rolling Upgrade of Oracle 10gR2 RAC with Physical Standby (DG)

    Hi DBAs,
I want to do a rolling upgrade of Oracle 10.2.0.3 (2 node RAC+ASM) with Physical Standy Dataguard to Oracle 10.2.0.4 also applying CPU (April2009).
Please suggest the best way to perform this upgrade and patching with no downtime.
    Thanks
    -Samar-

Unfortunately rolling upgrade is only possible with a logical standby in place:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/upgrades.htm#CHDBJAGG
That doesn't help you at this time, but 11g has a way to do it with a physical standby. Even here you need an intermediate logical standby:

**but i have not bin directory under in ORACLE_HOME.please clear my doupt to apply this patch...**
    Regards,

Also you clusterware installation installs to an ORACLE_HOME.
Oracle does only make a differentiation, if it has to be clear, that you got a clusterware home and a database home.
Normally if a patch is referring to $ORACLE_HOME (and the patch can be used for clusterware & database), it just means the installation directory of the oracle software installed.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC with ASM with asm_preferred_read_failure_group

    Hello DBAs,
I apologize first if this question has been posted somewhere.
I have a two nodes cluster so essentially, I have 2 ASM instances (ASM1 & ASM2). It seems like both instances share the same ASM spfile.
    +ASM1> show parameter spfile;
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string +OCRDG/clone-cluster/asmparame
    terfile/registry.253.759424467
    =====================================
    +ASM2> show parameter spfile;
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string +OCRDG/clone-cluster/asmparame
    terfile/registry.253.759424467
The Oracle docs says that you can configure asm_preferred_read_failure_group for each instance so when I logged in instance 1, I ran the command:
    +ASM1> alter system set asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG1', 'DATA.FG2';
then it showed DATA.FG1 is primary and DATA.FG2 is secondary but this also shows on instance 2 because it uses the same spfile.
How can I make instance 1 uses DATA.FG1 for primary and instance 2 uses DATA.FG2 for primary. I have separate GRID home for each node.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    thanks,
    TD

The Oracle docs says that you can configure asm_preferred_read_failure_group for each instance so when I logged in instance 1, I ran the command:
    +ASM1> alter system set asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG1', 'DATA.FG2';
then it showed DATA.FG1 is primary and DATA.FG2 is secondary but this also shows on instance 2 because it uses the same spfile.
How can I make instance 1 uses DATA.FG1 for primary and instance 2 uses DATA.FG2 for primary. I have separate GRID home for each node.
Any help is much appreciated.Normally we can give different values for each instance, But i never tried in ASM.
    Here is example
    SQL> alter system set  asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG1' sid='ASM1';
SQL> alter system set  asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='DATA.FG2' sid='ASM2';So DATA.FG1 will be allocated to ASM1, DATA.FG2 will be allocated to ASM2.
    Now check from ASM1
    SQL> show parameter asm_preferred_read_failure_group
    & from ASM2
    SQL> show parameter asm_preferred_read_failure_group

  • Oracle 10g RAC with ASM upgrade RHEL3 to RHEL4

Has anyone acheived this or know of any documentation highlighting any pitfalls ?

    Hi.
If you are using raw devices for ASM, I would not expect there to be a problem. I would have thought all you have to do is:
    - Stop Oracle from starting automatically on reboot.
    - Reboot the server and upgrade the OS.
    - Make sure all the prerequisites for the new OS are meet (check the isntall guide).
    - Startup Oracle.
Note. It may be wise to do a "$ORACLE_HOME/bin/relink all" to make sure.
If you are using ASMLib with ASM, then you will also need to upgrade your ASMLib software, as this is kernel version specific.
Of course, I've never had to do this, so don't take my word for it :) Maybe an SR on Metalink is in order.
    Cheers

    Hi all,
I have a question about Oracle RAC and network interface.
We're using Oracle 10gR2 RAC with two nodes on Linux Red Hat.
Let's assume that the public network interface goes down.
I would like to know what happens with existing connections
on node with network interface with problems.
    Are connections frozen, actives?
Can the users continue to use theses existing connections using the another node of RAC?If the interface is down? what do you think? All connections to this node will die. How does your application handle fail-over, does it attempt to reconnect or just have a complete application failure?
You should spend some time in a test lab where you can test this stuff for yourself. Read the documentation and there are tons of sites out there that purport to have all of your RAC/TAF/FAN/FAF questions. - I would read and trust the documentation first.

I know that the listener goes down and any other connections is allowed.

  • Oracle 9i database to oracle 10g rac

    Hi all,
    Here is my situation:
I have a client who wants Oracle 10GR2 RAC with OCFS2 on RHEL5 using FCP and Netapp storage.Till here I am ok, now he has nine different existing oracle 9i database single instance running on various RHEL3 servers, each of these database are small databases of 20-50GB max. Now the client wants the following:
    1. Move all these individual databases to the new RAC servers, which means I will have nine different database and instances.
    2. What is the fastest way to do it, I can get full database shutdown during weekends.
Can I copy these databases to the new rac servers and make a new controlfile, will 10G read the 9i DB from the new locations?
How do I make these db's into a rac instance?
    please help, very urgent.
