Oracle single instance 10.2.0.4 on AIX 5.3 with GPFS

Hi there,
Is there anybody ever that has been used oracle SINGLE instance with only all data files & its archival on AIX GPFS filesystem ? I am currently supporting on this environment, and would like to know whether there is any concern or issue.
Thank you,
Bundit

Pl post details of exact versions of OS and database. By "SINGLE", do you mean a non-RAC database ? I believe it is supported - more details in MOS Doc 282036.1 (Minimum Software Versions and Patches Required to Support Oracle Products on IBM Power Systems)

  • Oracle single instance rac installation

    hi,
do I need minimum of 2 servers in order to carry out 11.2 oracle single instance RAC installation ? or that its possible with one node? and then can add more nodes in future?
is there any article/documents on this?
    thanks

Cloning nodes is the preferred method of creating new clusters. The cloning process copies Oracle Clusterware software images to other nodes that have similar hardware and software. Use cloning to quickly create several clusters of the same configuration. Before using cloning, you must install an Oracle Clusterware home successfully on at least one node using the instructions in your platform-specific Oracle Clusterware installation guide.
For new installations, or if you must install on only one cluster, Oracle recommends that you use the automated and interactive installation methods, such as Oracle Universal Installer or the Provisioning Pack feature of Oracle Enterprise Manager. These methods perform installation checks to ensure a successful installation. To add or delete Oracle Clusterware from nodes in the cluster, use the addNode.sh and rootcrs.pl scripts."
it doesnt directly say its possible and I cant find full documentation on how to go about it ... but seem like its possible ?

Now, the requirement has changed and as per new architecture, we want to create microsoft cluster having 2 nodes in it.
We want to move the current database instance data files on node 1 of the new cluster.
My Q's is, what will be effect of the current architecture. Also, how we can do it?

  • Request help for confusion over Oracle single instance database

    Hello all,
Following Oracle version was installed at the client site @ the moment
Oracle Database 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.6.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64) on Non-Clustered enviornment.
The clients are going to arrange another identical server and wants to configure it with 2 nodes windows cluster enviornement.
The current server where Oracle server was installed will become active node of the cluster.
The confusion is if we should install the following version on node 2
Oracle Clusterware 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.6.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64)
    or
node 2 should also be installed with
    Oracle Database 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.6.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64) version ?
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/111060-win64soft-099656.html
Any help for removing confusion would be appreciated
    Thanks,

I think it's first needed to think about what kind of configuration you want; Failsafe, DataGuard or even RAC? But you talk about clustered and an active node, so I take it the object is to create a Failsafe cluster.
If you want to use FailSafe first read about it, for example use http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/index-082893.html (Resources: Documentation)

In essense you are really doing nothing more than restoring a backup on a new host. If you want a blow by blow detail of how to accomplish it take at http://www.oracledistilled.com/oracle-database/restore-database-to-another-host-using-rman
In order to write the files to the ASM Disk groups you will use the SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE in your restore script. You will also need to create the ORACLE_BASE/admin/<DBSID> structure on all of node. Once you get the database completely restore you will need to edit the SPFILE to include the proper value for the CLUSTER* parameters and each the node specific parameters. Sorry that it is kind of higher level than what you are probably looking for but the link above and what I put here should get you were want to go.

  • Primary database is RAC and Physical standby is single instance

    Hello All,
I am using Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 as primary database, we are going to start using Oracle data guard.
So I am designing my infrastructure and planing to use Oracle 11.2.0.3 Single instance as my physical stand by database.
My question is it feasible to have my standby database as single instance while the primary is RAC?
is it feasible to build my Oracle single instance standby database from the RMAN backup of the RAC primary database?
Is there any restrictions (or any points to be taken into consideration) since my primary database is RAC while the physical standby is Oracle single instance?
    in the below link
    [http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/concepts.htm#i1039416]
it was mentioned that primary can be RAC or single and same for standby, but my question is it feasible to have primary as RAC while standby as single instance? or it should be like each others?
The primary database can be either a single-instance Oracle database or an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) database.
Similar to a primary database, a standby database can be either a single-instance Oracle database or an Oracle RAC database.Regards,

My question is it feasible to have my standby database as single instance while the primary is RAC?Yes...quite a common setup.
is it feasible to build my Oracle single instance standby database from the RMAN backup of the RAC primary database?Yes.
Is there any restrictions (or any points to be taken into consideration) since my primary database is RAC while the physical standby is Oracle single instance? No show stoppers.

  • Converting to Oracle Real Application Clusters from Single-Instance Oracle

Is there any notes at metalink for
Converting to Oracle Real Application Clusters from Single-Instance Oracle Databases
We should have 10g DB on ASM to make it RAC?

With Oracle Database 10g Release 2, $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rconfig tool can be used to convert Single instance database to RAC. This tool takes in a xml input file and convert the Single Instance database whose information is provided in the xml. You can run this tool in "verify only" mode prior to performing actual conversion. This is documented in the RAC admin book and a sample xml can be found $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/rconfig/sampleXMLs/ConvertToRAC.xml. Grid Control 10g Release 2 provides a easy to use wizard to perform this function.

  • Protect single instance linux Oracle 11Gr2 with Clusterware 11Gr2 non-RAC

    Hi All,
I saw this link, but it mentions RAC as a solution:
Using Oracle Clusterware to Protect A Single Instance Oracle Database 11g
I have seen various articles about protecting single instance with cold failover using clusterware, but they mention scripts and older versions of Clusterware. I am trying to figure out if possible to incorporate virtual ip's / scan listeners or if this is even a supported configuration...
I have set up clusterware 11gr2 using OCFS2. I basically just want to do a cold failover from one node to the other, and I do not wish to purchase a RAC license...
    thanks much

  • Migrating single instance SAP and Oracle 11.2.0.1 database to Oracle RAC

We have a single instance SAP Netweaver environment on Oracle 11.2.0.1 database and want to migrate to Oracle 11.2.0.1 RAC and ASM. The documents are for 11.2.0.2 and later but we want a way to:
    1. Migrate single instance SAP and Oracle 11.2.0.1 instance to ASM
    2. Configure the environment as four node Oracle 11.2.0.1 cluster
    Thus far, I have:
    1. Installed clusterware 11.2.0.1
    2. Installed four ASM instances
    My questions:
    1. We want to migrate the single instance database to same server and extend to four node cluster and ASM
However, current SID for SAP and Oracle must remain the same. The problem I have is that the target database name needs to be same as source on same physical host.
    2. How would I use RMAN to migrate the single instance database to ASM for 11.2.0.1?
    3. How would I use rconfig after this step?

    875554 wrote:
1- We have single instance Oracle 11.2.0.1 database using file based datafiles, archivelogs, controlfiles, etc on single RHEL5 Linux host

3- We have installed four node Oracle 11.2.0.1 clusterware on the above nodesAnd what is the shared storage? For RAC, all shared storage devices for the cluster need to be available and usable by all ASM instances in that cluster.
Issue- we have RAC 11.2 clusterware listener using SCAN and listeners for all four clusterware nodes.
When we try to run the following RMAN command to migrate the single instance Oracle 11.2.0.1 datafiles it fails:The failure says: "+RMAN-10038: database session for channel ORA_DISK_1 terminated unexpectedly+". And this in itself does not tell you what the actual problem encountered is.
4- How to register the single instance with all four ASM instances and network services to resolve the above issue?Register what instance? ASM does not need databases or instances to be registered. It is a storage management layer. The cluster (grid infrastructure) layer is the one that deals with the registration (and management) of the various services and resources on that grid (e.g. ASM instances, database instances, SCAN and VIP, Listener services, etc).
5- Do we need to first run rconfig utility against single Oracle 11.2.0.1 instance to register with clusterware services BEFORE using RMAN to perform the datafile migration to ASM?Never used rconfig. See Support Note +RCONFIG : Frequently Asked Questions [ID 387046.1]+ for details.

  • Converting Single Instance database into Oracle Fail-Safe on Linux

    Hi All,
We have single instance Oracle10g database running on Linux RHEL4. We are looking to convert this database into Oracle Fail-Safe (Active-Passive). Does any one have document for Oracle fail-safe setup?
    Regards,
    Tushar

    Tushar,
you can't use software for windows on Linux.
However, there's number of ways to implement high-availability solution on Linux Oracle.
You can go with Active-Active (RAC) - which means that you'll have two servers attached to the same database at the same time. You can use either, and if one goes down(due to power failure for instance), the second will still be available.
You can go with Active-Passive (Data Guard) - which means that you'll have one of the nodes being active and the second passive, but synchronized with the first one, so in case of failure of the first node you can activate the second one.
You can also go with linux clustering - which is most similar to MCS + fail-safe - you'll have two nodes clustered with linux clustering software (RH cluseter suite for instance) and connected to shared storage. One node is active, and in case of crash database instance will be automatically started on the second node. This is beneficial because you can use your resources more efficiently. In case if you have two databases you can run each of them on dedicated server and then, in case of node failure move to another one. However, the setup of such configuration is quite cumbersome.
