Oracle Spatial - LRS component

Hello,
I am working as a consultant for a transportation department for building Highway Database Management system .Transportation department uses several Linear Referncing Methods such as Milepoint, Station, Refrence Marker etc to locate an attribute on a route . I am new to Oracle - LRS but have heared that by implementing Oracle-LRS , it can locate route attribute and events by one measure and not with x and y coordinate. Does anyone have implemented Oracle-LRS , if so I would like to know how can I design my dastabase based on LRS.
What other problems Oracle LRS can solve in my case ?
I will appreciate if some one can pass me design code etc to look into.

Thanks for your advice . I donot have 9i but hope to get very soon, I will give a shot then . One more thing which you mentioned in your previous answer is that one has to write extensive PL/SQL code to use LRS. In my case , I have a simple table of roads and would like to clip a segment of road dynamically and then based on the result I would like to fetch some data from other tables . But I lost here, because I donot have a way to relate data in the other table. I have a simple table say routes to store road geometry and in other route_features table I am storing road features ( attribute of the table is rc_id (pk),route_id_fk,feature_id_fk,feature_value,begin_milepoint,end_milepoint. Both tables are related with one key ie ROUTE_ID .I want to clip a segment of route from first table and then would like to get the data from the second table. I have no idea how I can accomplish this in PL/SQL. Here is my code what I am trying to do

    I’m having some problems with LRS points.
    Two tables: A and b. Table A contains valid LRS linestrings; table B (non spatial) is a list of points with stated eastings and northings columns that exist in close proximity to the linestrings. Points are associated to the linestring by a.unique_id.
    I’m successfully projecting the b.points onto their a.linestrings using SDO_LRS.PROJECT_PT passing the a.geometry and constructing a geometry from b.eastings and b.northings.
    So far so good. I can get the measure by nesting SDO_LRS.GET_MEASURE; and offset with SDO_LRS.GET_OFFSET. Meaning that the returned value from SDO_LRS.PROJECT_PT is a valid LRS point (SDO_GTYPE=3301):

    A bit of time has past... I got back to this piece of work again. Thanks for the tips above, I’ve successfully implemented some of those. It works, but it’s too slow for production.
    To summarise, this is the real world problem I’m dealing with:
    Let’s say I’ve got a table containing pedestrian’s footways; each footway is referenced to its road network section (link), many footways records to one section. I have to calculate the length of each individual footway along its road section.
    Theoretically this is done by projecting all the footway vertices onto its road section and returning the difference between the highest LRS value and the lowest. The problem is slightly made worse by the fact that each footway polygon can actually be made up of multiple elements (multipolygon).
    The following is a sort of high level logic. I’d like to know if any of you agree with this:
    1.     A temporary table t is created and populated with the following columns:
    a.     Footway_id  existing identifier;
    b.     Element_id  sequential and unique to the footway record;
    c.     Vertices  LRS point (projected point);
    2.     The table t is then queried: for each footway[sum[ each element (maxLRS-minLRS)]], in short, for each footway multipolygon the length of each element is added together to give the total length of the footway.
    Is this too clumsy? Is there another way to go about? Perhaps without the use of a temporary table? Any suggestion’s welcome.

  • "invalid LRS segment" when querying an Oracle Spatial DB

    I have a table of GIS segments in an Oracle Spatial database. I'm using C# and ODP to connect to the database. For a given measure from the start of a segment, I want to find the GPS coordinates for that point. I'm running the following query:
    select g.geom.sdo_ordinates ord_array from
    *(select sdo_lrs.locate_pt(shape,0.02,0) as geom from test_schema.test_table*
    where route='ABC' and segmentnum='101.1') g
    where shape is of type SDO_GEOMETRY. I'm getting the following error:
    ORA-13331: invalid LRS segment
    Is there a problem with how I'm passing shape to locate_pt()? The Oracle Spatial documentation says the argument should be SDO_geometry, so that seems ok.

  • Oracle Spatial functionality with WFS

    Hi all
    My first post here so be gentle on me ;-)
    This may be an obvious question but here goes ...
    When using a WFS client can you access the full SDO_... SQL functions within Oracle Spatial? I've had a read of the WFS spec and it is all a bit vague on how the queries get passed through to the data store.
    Also with the WFS locking, is this done at the web server level? If so how would that impact on any direct access to the database? A bit dangerous??
    Appreciate any advice on WFS implemtations with a 9i back end. I want to retain the full native Oracle functionality and still deploy via WFS ... a pipe dream??

    Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear, I realise the WFS client will never directly access the data source, that it is the WFS server that makes the request to the data store, not the client, but can the call be passed through to Oracle as native SQL?
    I think I found the answer in the OGC Filter Encoding Imp Spec where it desribes in great detail the optional filter component of a WFS request. It desribes the CQL filter operators that include some spatial operators. These could, I understand, be translated from CGL and Feature based schema to SQL (in GML?) and relational based schema.
    While I don't think at first glance that the spatial operators in CQL match all the Oracle SDO_ functions they probably go far enough for most normal users.
    Am I on the right track?
    Does anyone know of any work that has been done in this filter translation to SQL and if it has been implemented successfully anywhere.
    I think the locks would still pose a problem, but that's for another day :-)

  • Oracle DataBase server component is in INVALID in 10.2.0.4

    I took full RMAN backup from production two node RAC system. Production system is in Oracle 10.2.0.3. I tried to restore the backup in another system which is single node system Oracle 10.2.0.4. I restored and recovered database successfully. When I try to do 'alter database open resetlogs' I received following error:
    RMAN-03002: failure of alter db command at 11/05/2009 08:39:10
    ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced
    ORA-00704: bootstrap process failure
    ORA-39700: database must be opened with UPGRADE option
    Then I started database with upgrade option.

  • Oracle Spatial explained!?

    Can anyone tell me in layman terms about Oracle Spatial please? I know it's a feature to help GIS solutions but can someone define this for a novice such as myself?

    I have not actually used Oracle Spatial, but I do have some experience with GIS solutions. What I do know is that Oracle Spatial provides capabilities designed to more easily deal with geometric data types, such as shapes, lines and points. Functionality which would be difficult to achieve with standard data types is optimized (for example, the ability to query all customers within a 10 mile radius of a known location). Another common component of GIS systems is geocoding (converting an address to a geographic coordinate like latitude / longitude).

    there is a "jlib" directory under each db component. the oracle spatial Java API is under $ORACLE_HOME/md/jlib.

  • Oracle Spatial(Locator) Java Library

    Hello,
    I understand that Oracle Database in XE version includes Oracle Locator (limited version of Oracle Spatial). I would like to access to spatial data in JAVA application.
    As far as I know oracle.spatial.geometry package is included in sdoapi.jar file which I'm unable to find in 11g XE beta installation. Can I download it separately somewhere or it is in different jar?
    Or those functions are not avaible in XE version?

    Hi,
    For this kind of activity, it might be best to use Oracle Spatial (rather than locator) which includes
    LRS (Linear Referncing System). Linear Referencing allows you to use measure information
    (such as start measure/end meaure) to return spatial data without duplicating spatial data in
    multiple tables.
    If you can elaborate on what data you have (do you have a table with geometry data for the highways?),
    we might be able to outline what you need to do.

    Hi,
    I am new to Oracle Spatial and Linear Referencing System. I checked with the user guide, and found very limited functions available such as: define, clip, split, concatenate, scale a geometric segment, locate a point on a geometric segment etc.
    My question is whether or not LRS supports additional analysis functionality such as event overlay?
    Here is an example: one route is from 0 to 100 miles; from 20 to 50 miles is a pavement road, from 30 to 80 miles has high traffic accidents. Can we retrieve road (from where to where mile post information) that is pavement and has high traffic accidents?
    A SQL statement might be:
    select * from route table where event = 'pavement' and event = 'high traffic accidents'.

    Hi Feng Lu,
    This might require more than one table.
    For instance, you might have a table called roads that includes lrs information as well as attribute data (road name, etc) and a key that other tables can join on.
    To do what you are trying to do, you might have additional tables, such as an accidents table that contains an entry for every accident, with information such as where the accident happened as a measure value only, a pointer using the key back to the road the accident happened on, and perhaps other information such as accident cause, etc.
    Another additional table you might have is a road_condition table, with information about road condition such as: condition, start measure for that condition, end measure for that condition, when the last time the road was inspected, and a key back to the roads data.
    The you could query the database getting whatever information is required from the three tables.

  • Can not deploy Oracle Spatial Routing Engine on Oracle Weblogic

    I posted my question with Oracle Support, however they directed me to the oracle forums. I am hoping this problem can be resolved here. In any event I am getting the following stack trace (shown below). I am using Spatial Version 11.2.0.1.0, Map Viewer 11.1.1.5.1, and WebLogic 10.3.5.0, and data-set provided by Pro Oracle Spatial for Oracle Database 11g - Apress boos. I have successful in deploying Map Viewer, Geocoder Server, but not the Routing Server.

  • Loading shapefiles into Oracle Spatial

    Fellow Oracle Spatiallers!
    Currently we edit Oracle Spatial data by checking data out into a shapefile,
    making our changes off-line, and reloading the shapefile back into Oracle.
    Instead of using the Oracle Spatial supplied tool, we decided to purchase
    a utility called the "Spatial Loader" from a company called Geometry Pty Ltd
    (http://www.geometryit.com). There are a number of reasons why we decided to
    go that way which might become evident from the command line parameters of
    this utility:
    Usage: Shp2Spt [Arguments] [Options]
    OR
    Usage: Java com.geometryit.spatialloader.oracle.AdvancedJavaSpatialTranslator [Arguments] [Options]
    [Arguments] must specify these values:
    -o create
    type of operation to perform
    create creates a new table, must not exist already
    recreate creates a new table, may exist already
    init drops existing table, creates a new one
    append appends data onto existing table
    -f <shape_file>
    the shape file or project to translate
    -l <table,column>
    target table and column for the geometry data

    The main things I like about this tool are:
    1. One step (no conversion to sqlloader form followed by a call to the sqlloader).
    2. The ability to round the coordinates of the shapes in the shapefile by applying
    the XY tolerance values held in the SDO_GEOM_METADATA table.
    This is quite important because our editing package - due to double/single precision
    issues - can actually move coordinates but those movements are sub the precision of
    the actual data. By rounding to the nominate precision we can detect situations where
    no actual change to the shape (and its attributes) was made and thus not create superfluous
    revisions within the database.
    3. It will correctly re-wind the coordinates of the outer/inner shells of polygons. This is
    important as ESRI shapefiles are agnostic on the winding order: an outer shell coordinates
    can be listed in either clockwise or anti-clockwise order.
    4. You can specify the primary key (UFI) column (numeric) and an Oracle Sequence number such
    that each new shape loaded can have its UFI assigned from that sequence.
    Because of this flexibility, and the excellent support (it is a purchasable product) from the
    developers, I can heartily recommend this loader to fellow Spatiallers. It is worth every
    penny I spent on it. Try the free version on their website and if, like me, you like it,
    purchase it!

    As part of the zip file created for the next training course to be posted for Oracle Spatial on OTN (within the next few weeks) there is a free (unsupported, undocumented) version of a shape to sdo converter. This should work, but it is unsupported. It will create a layer that then needs to be migrated into 8.1.6 format.

  • Oracle Spatial and Oracle Forms

    Hi,
    Does anyone have experience with Oracle Spatial and Oracle Forms?
    I have generated a form, which is based on a view. The view uses the mdsys.sdo_relate operator. Somehow I am unable to get the form to perform (to get one record it takes over 20 minutes). While useing sql-navigator to process the same statement it seems no problem. The query that also uses the view, is then processed in 10 seconds.
    I also noticed that when text-functions like ' lower' of ' upper' are used to query the view, the query is processed within 15 seconds. If I don't use ' lower' or ' upper' it takes a long time (> 20 minutes) to process the query. Is it possible that this causes the bad performance of the form?
    On metalink I have found that forms and spatial do not cooperate because of the pl/sql version that
    forms6 uses. There is no solution presented, does anyone know of a work around?
    My configuration is:
    Oracle 8.1.7 on WIN2K @ PIII-800Mhz 256 Mb memory.
    Formsbuilder 6

    1. Book - Pro Oracle Spatial for Oracle Database 11g by r. Kothuri, A. Godfrind, E. Beinat. This book provides a nice introduction on Oracle Spatial concepts and have examples.
    2. Look at the Oracle Spatial & Graph User Guide
    2. Book - Applying and Extending Oracle Spatial by S. Greener and S. Ravada. This book provides hands on information for advanced oracle spatial application developers. Practical guide on hands-on examples, Data models and  develop cross-vendor database solutions.
    3. This oracle spatial forum, once you understand these concepts.
    In the future consider Certification on Oracle Spatial 11g Certified Implementation Specialist.

  • Help define the requirements for an Oracle Spatial management tool

    Hi,
    We are developing a tool that, we hope, will be indispensable for all Oracle Spatial and Locator dbas/users. We've released version 1.0, but we need your help to define the requirements for the next version.
    What features would you like to have in a management tool for your spatial databases?
    The features we've got so far:
    1. Viewing of vector data in a map + attributes
    2. Loading from shapefiles
    3. Exporting to shapefiles
    4. Validating metadata, indexes and spatial data.
    We are adding editing of vectors in the next version - basic stuff for add, update and delete.
    But there must be a lot more. What do you find difficult to do in Oracle Spatial/Locator? What would you like in a tool such as this?
    Any feedback either to myself or the forum is much appreciated.

    Andrew knows what I have asked for but for others to think about and to start
    the ball rolling, here's what they are:
    1. Ability to enter own SQL commands but with PARAMETERS for attributes
    and shapes as in the following examples:
    SELECT ...
    FROM my_spatial_table a
    WHERE a.ATTRIBUTE = :attr
    AND MDSYS.SDO_RELATE(a.shape,:polygon,'mask=anyinteract') = 'TRUE'
    When executed the attribute value is asked for via a input box (data type?)
    and the user is asked to define the SDO_GEOMETRY for the :polgygon parameter via mouse clicks on the screen.
    Similarly, this would work for INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE...
    INSERT INTO my_spatial_table (shape) values(:polygon)
    The data type of an attribute parameter could be determined in two ways:
    a) By querying the Oracle catalog;
    b) By using a "PARAMETERS" command before the query as follows
    PARAMETERS name type [(size)] [, name type [(size)] ...]
    The PARAMETERS declaration has these parts:
    name     The name of the parameter.
    type     The type of the parameter.
    size     The size of the parameter in characters or bytes.
    2. When executing an SQL SELECT statement I would like the tool
    to suggest the HINTS that are needed to improve performance.
    3. Following on from 2, I would like to Tick an option that would return the
    EXPLAIN PLAN that the query optimizer used when executing my query.
    4. The tool has to support ALL Oracle's spatial vector data types.
    5. It would be nice to be able to work with GeoRasters. Since Spatial Console
    imports/exports shapefiles why not the same for rasters. However, the problem
    with supporting foreign data formats is WHERE DO YOU STOP!!!!!
    6. You could allow for the styling of the Spatial Console to be stored in the MapViewer catalogs or use the MapViewer catalogs when styling an Sdo_Geometry if it exists (I note that your tool extracts the SDO_METADATA
    why not the MapViewer metadata as well)?
