Oracle Standalone DB 11g installation with ASM on Windows 2008

Hi Experts,
I would like to install Oracle Database 11g R2 on Windows 2008 with ASM .
Since I want to do it as a standalone database server , I did not confiugre any shared storage. I have a single disk on my machine with 1 TB space.
There is a free space of 750 GB and want to use that space for ASM disks.
Can someone guide me on how to configure ASM disks ?.
Thanks

Thanks Fiedi. Thanks a lot for your response.
Last month I did RAC installation where I need format raw devices using below commands :
clean all
create part ext
create part log
Is it not required for standalone DB installation with ASM ?
Basically preparing disk for ASM on RAC or non RAC is the same

I am able to create 4 logical raw devices (175GB) each. 2 for Data and 2 for DB flash. However I am not able to clean those raw devices with "clean all" command.
Can you help me ?
what error did you get?. Try delete the logical partition and recreate it

  • Which Oracle client to use? with CRS2008 on Windows 2008 R2 64bit

    Hi,
We are setting up a standalone Crystal Reports 2008 Server on Windows 2008 R2 64bit. This server will serve some reports that will pull data from an Oracle 11g DB. Several Oracle 10g/11g, (32bit or 64bit) DB client has been tried, but CRS cannot connect to the oracle DB using any of them. Which oracle client is known to be working well on this setup?
    CRS 2008 <> Windows 2008 R2 64 bit <> Xeon E5600 series machine
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hello,
    CRS2008 v1 supports Oracle 9.2, 10g R1, 10G R2 and 11g R1.
The client to use on those version are the same as the server meaning if you have a 11g R1 server then you can use an Oracle Net Client 11G R1. But you can use also a JDBC, ODBC, OLEDB Oracle 11G R1.
    If you have a CRS2008 v0, then Oracle 11G is not supported. Only 9.2, 10g R1 and 10G R2.
I hope this will help you

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM+RAC

    Gurus,
Need some suggestuon on Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM and RAC option.
We have found many documents on the Oracle, HP, HP-Oracle CTC and third party web sites, but nothing that is specific to this particular combination of separate
ORACLE_HOMEs, ASM and 10g RAC CRS. It is unclear for me from the documentation how this combination of ASM and 10.2g RAC may best be installed.
The high level steps i got after reading lot of docs as follows - but i am not sure whether these are correct or not. if they are correct, can any one share their experience/notes please?
    1) Install CRS
    2) Install RDBMS for ASM HOME - create separater oracle home for ASM instance using OUI
    3) Install RDBMS for RAC Database Home - create separater oracle home for RAC database using OUI
    4) Create ASM database using DBCA -
    5) Use dbca to create database.

Oracle provides 'paint by numbers' tutorials called 'Oracle By Example'. (Go to OTN, check under the Training tab)
They have one for a Windows based ASM/RAC that you might want to review. Not your specific environment, but the steps will be dag-nabbed close.
    I recommend walking the path (http://otn.oracle.com >> training:OBE >> Database 10g Release 1:VMWare:Installation

I think Werner is suggesting you ask your question in the appropriate forum.
Go up 2 levels (to Community Discussion Forum) and look for the Database category. It's not that difficult to find, and you will be discussing the question with people who actually care about that kind of question.
The people who read and interact in this forum do so to discuss Documentation questions. Specifically questions about how to improve the documentaiton.

  • How to Create Manual Standby for a Oracle 11g RAC with ASM to Single Instan

    Hi All,
I have a task to configure a Single Instance Standby Database with ASM for 2-node Primary RAC+ASM database.
Version using : 11.1.0.6 Oracle 11g --- *" STANDARD EDITION "* Please note datagaurd will not be supported in standard edition.
Primary database - 2 -Node RAC using ASM storage (All datafiles, redologs, controfile and archive logs)
Need to setup a single instance standby database manually and than using scripts to transfer the archive logs from primary server to standby server to do recovery time to time.
Please let me know if there are any configuration document(s) which can help me to set the manual standby? or need your kind help to give your valuable ideas how to go in above situation.
    Thanks in advance

Well if the archive logs are stored in ASM on the primary nodes, you almost definitely want to be using RMAN to access them. Then to transfer between primary and standby there are many options, this is essentially the step that Data Guard takes care of - so if you (and I) are running Standard Edition, this is the part to "worry" about.
I'm not really sure what you mean by this:
As in standard edition the archive destination will be on ASMI don't think the Edition of Oracle (Standard or Enterprise) dictates where and how you store your archive logs, but it's possible I've misunderstood what you mean...SE dictates that database storage for RAC will be ASM, including archive log files. Anything else is not officially supported. I haven't tested but it may be that you can use LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to specify a local filesystem for archive log files as well.
If that doesn't work you'll have to script rman "backup as copy" jobs regularly and then transport the results of that.

By the way, it seems Robert has been pretty helpful, it's polite to give him some points dude. And since this is your thread, not mine, give him a "helpful" from me too :p
    El DBA
Incidentally if you are forced down the RMAN backup as copy route then this will likely throw your current backup retention strategy somewhat, you'll need to think carefully about when an archivelog can be deleted following backup, how many times it might be backed up and so on. I do understand, and have argued for, the use of SE RAC. I also understand and have argued for and implemented manually managed standby a number of times. However by the time your primary database is a RAC instance and you need a standby for DR etc then you really have to look very seriously at whether Standard Edition is still the right investment or not. You will be spending a lot of DBA time managing and troubleshooting this, and you will find that it is less reliable than the off the shelf solution. I suspect that you are very close to the point where an EE installation becomes a worthwhile investment here.

  • Restore Oracle DB Backup on RAC with ASM on Standalone server

    Dear Experts,
We have our Production Enviornment on Linux as OS and Oracle DB on RAC and ASM. We are taking the backup through DB13 of Production system.
We want to rectify whether the above backup is restorable or not. For this, we want to restore the backup on Single Standalone system without RAC and ASM.
My questions is 1) Is it possible to restore database from RAC and ASM to normal Standalone server ?
                             2) If possible, can anyone let me know the challenges we could face during the same procedure.
    Looking forward for suggestions.
    Regards,
    KK

    Hi Ketul,
I suppose restoration can be done to standalone system using brtools.
    Refer steps in
SAP note 1627541 - BR*Tools support for Oracle ASM and Exadata/ODA
905359 - Using BR*Tools for Oracle RAC databases
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I want to know the installation steps for Oracle Database Vault (11g-version:11.1.0.6).
Is there any document which specifies the installation steps.
I have the document for 10g - Database Vault installation. But i am not able to find any specific document for 11g Database Vault installation.

  • Database installation with ASM

    Hello,
I just install a new RAC server with 2 nodes.
    Linux RedHat4 /oracle 10gR2.
    I have a disk RAID5 : /dev/sdc--->/dev/raw/raw1
    RAID5 : /dev/sdc--->/dev/raw/raw2
    RAID1 : /dev/sdd--->/dev/raw/raw3
When I create my database I need to put my datafiles in RAID5 and my redologs in RAID1.
How I can do this with ASM? I have to create 3 disk groups (+DATA,+FRA and +REDOLOG)?

You dedicate disks to an ASM diskgroup in the CREATE DISKGROUP statement. If you have 2 disks (one RAID5, one RAID1) you can have only 2 diskgroups. The first one points to RAID5 (datafiles), the second one to RAID1 (redologs). Later on you have to put datafiles into group1 and redologs into group2.
This document is a good description, how to deal with ASM:

  • Installation with ASM question

In reading one of the ASM install docs it says to install the OS and the Oracle home on the same drive. Is this really a requirement? The client is a windows shop, OS is Windows 2008 R1, Oracle 11.1.0.7. We want to install the OS on one drive and the Oracle home on another, will that cause issues for ASM?
    Thanks in advance.

I do not think so. You should be able to install your ORACLE_HOME on a different partition or drive. Just out of curiosity: where exactly did you read this?

  • Create 10g Database with ASM on Windows Server 2003 x64

I am running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise x64 on a Dell server and wish to install Oracle 10g 10.2 with ASM.
First, I performed a software only install. Then, I created several raw partitions on each of two SATA2 disks, and created a disk group - DGROUP1 - using two partitions from each disk. So far so good.
Next, I tried to use DBCA to create a general purpose database using ASM, and that is where the problem arose. I can use sqlplus to stop and start the ASM instance, but when I use DBCA to select ASM for storage I am asked for the SYS password for ASM. I enter it and get a message "Passwords cannot be verified because: Io exception: The network adapter could not establish the connection". If I ignore this I can go on to select my DGROUP1, but the installation ultimately fails due to "insufficient privileges".
    Can anyone please help?

    Hi Martin
Thanks for the reply. I used ASMTOOLG to stamp the disks and then used DBCA and followed the description hereo create the disk group DGROUP1:
    http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3571371
At one point, DBCA prompted me to run "localconfig add", which I did.
If it is a missing password file that is the problem, is it possible to create one to put things right?
