Oracle standard edition vs. enterprise edition

Hi all
Due to cost constraints, we have had to downgrade our 8i Database Enterprise Edition installation to Standard Edition.
My question is: do we have to re-create our database under Standard Edition, to make it a 'Standard Edition' database, or can we just re-open our existing database (created under Enterprise Edition) with the Standard Edition?
I installed 8i SE and opened our database but, of course, SELECT BANNER FROM V$VERSION suggests we're still running the EE.
Are we breaking the terms of our licence by using this existing database?
Very many thanks
Andrew

Hi!
My impression is during the database creation time, Oracle incorporates in data dictionary the options available for each product edition in that time.
Try to execute a specific operation that needs an E.E. license just like parallel query, advanced replication, and Partitioning.
Execute this query:
select * from v$option;
And compare to the Database Feature and Option Availability ( notes available on metalink ):
Differences Between Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition in 8i
Note:112591.1
Differences between Oracle 8.1.x Personal, Standard and Enterprise on NT/2000
Note:70059.1
As long as this is only my impression, try opening a SR to make it sure.
HTH
Best regards.

  • Difference between standard edition and enterprise edition?

    Is there any document describing the feature differences between Oracle 9i standard edition and enterprise edition?
    Specifically is Oracle Text bundled with the standard edition?

    Hi,
    Check this document:
    http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_database_id=NOT&p_id=112591.1
    Apart from the features that are present in E.E. and not in S.E., there is little difference (except the license price...).
    Note that some seperately purchased options are only available with E.E., not S.E. (e.g. Partitioning, Enterprise Manager Packs).

    hi,
    who can tell me what is the difference between ora 9i standard edition and enterprise edition?? relevant http links are also appreciated. thank you!

    If your 'professor' really said that then I think you need to find a new college!I agree. 11g is a superset of 9i. In fact,you can tell 11g to run in 9i compatibility mode.
    >
    I firmly believe that you would do well starting with
    9i and then going through the new features with each
    release to 11g.Since 9i is officially about to start it's second year in 'Extended Support' (which, due to the surcharge in support fee, will likely see a drop-off in adoption) I would encourage anyone studying Oracle database to start with 10g.
    But the idea of starting at 9i is not bad.
    >
    'Client' is the software required to
    access/interact/maintain an Oracle database remotely
    from a client machine. Different features become
    available as you progress from Personal to Standard
    to Enterprise editions. They are cost related to
    whichever license you buy in a production environment.One point of confusion is that Personal Edition really is targeted for the Developer and therefore includes all capabilities, features and options of Enterprise Edition turned on and included in the license. (Except RAC and OEM packs) When I draw a picture, I put Personal Edition at the top as most capable.

    Difference between weblogic 10gR3 standard edition and enterprise edition ??

    WebLogic Server software is the same in all of the various download distributions available that vary on platform and 32/64 bit architecture. However, which features are licensed for use vary by the edition customers license, which is covered here:

    That link is for WLS 11g, but it applies generally to WLS 10.3.0 as well.

  • Oracle 11g Developer or Enterprise Edition?

    Hi Guys,
    Please help me on this one, its not an issue but I wanted to know which one supports for my small team.
    We are 3 developers and we are going to develope one project in C#.NET and Oracle 11g. Currently the project database in Oracle 11g and pascal, just we are going to migrate the interfaces into C#.net and it uses oracle 11g database. We are not going to do any changes in Oracle database.
    So my question's are
    1) which version is enough my developement of this project either Oracle 11g developer or Enterprise Edition?
    2) Where can i get in cheap?
    Thanks,
    Rajesh.

    1) There is no developer edition in Oracle. If you are 3 developers and will be developing on your own databases, you can buy 3 personal editions(same as enterprise edition) OR you can buy an user based enterprise edition for test environment. I believe minimum you need is 10 user based licenses. Also, if you think that you are not using any enterprise features, you can always go for user based standard edition which will be much cheaper as compare to enterprise.
    2) You can find some Oracle partners who sells the licenses.  Sometime they give you a good discount. I personally do not think Oracle will give you enough discount for these small number of licenses.

  • Question regarding Upgrading from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition

    DB version:10gR2
    We want to upgrade from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition.
    In the following documention
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238/intro.htm#BABFBJCC
    It talks about
    Deinstall the Standard Edition server software.I don't understand what they mean by DeInstall the software.
    Question 1.
    By 'DeInstall' , they mean , use DeInstall Products in the Welcome screen of Oracle Universal Installer and Remove the chosen OUI Home.Right?
    Question 2.
    If i 'Deinstall' (ie. remove the software), all the binaries are lost. Right? So what is the point of having just the data files?

  • Can I install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2000 Professional

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have Windows 2000 professional edition loaded on my PC and I'm not sure what it allows. Can I load Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition of the database on this operating system, or do I need to load windows 2000 server software.
    Thanks

    Its a problem with oracle and pentium 4 processors actually. The solution involves renaming or deleting the symcjit.dll in the 8i installation package after you've copied the whole Cd onto your HDD!
    I've tried this and it install OK, with a few errors along the way, now I can't get the apache server working, nor on the 9i AS that I've installed as well. Let me know if you get anything useful please?

  • Unable to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on a Dell Dimension 4400

    I just bought a Dell Dimension 4400 computer. I tried many times to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on it. My operating system is Windows XP Professional. It seems nothing to do with the Operating system because I installed the database on a HP computer with Windows XP professional. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    There are many documented issues regarding P4 processors with [OUI] Oracle Universal Installer for Oracle 8.1.x
    Oracle Metalink has some recommended patches and etc but I can only comment what is working for me. Keep in mind I only install these clients, I don't work on databases that actually use them. So if there is another piece that is dependant on the java version shipped with the cd, this may not solve everything.
    Workaround #1 [To install and be able to run OUI at a later time]
    1.) Install the Sun Java Runtime 1.2.2.11 [http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/jre/download-windows.html].
    a) Make sure that the system path enviroment (Properties of My Computer, not inside a cmd window) has c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin and c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin\classic before any Oracle related path. Don't have any other JRE in the path.
    2.) Copy the cd to a network source or local directory and do a search for all "symcjit.dll" and rename "symcjit.old"
    3.) Run the installer, this should install the client
    Workaround #2 [Just to install.. not for mass deployment]
    If you have access to an Oracle 9i CD, use the OUI 2 installer that comes with that and redirect the "source" to where your 8.1.7 client is.

  • Can't install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Pentium4

    I have Pentium4 with 256MB SDRAM and Windows 2000 server installed on it. I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition but the setup doesn't run at all.
    Is this a problem of O.S. or the processor?

    I'm not Oracle support however I had the same issue and this is what I found.
    Platforms Affected
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
    Description
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    When installing Oracle Products with the Oracle Universal Installer (8.1.x) on machines, the installer hangs.
    Likelihood of Occurrence
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
    Possible Symptoms
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The failure typically is that the affected application simply terminates.
    Workaround
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Not only will OUI be affected by this bug, most of the post-install
    configuration tools will also be affected. Running these tools with
    "-nojit" specified will avoid the hang, but it is not simple to specify "-nojit" for some of the products.
    The following workaround works for the Windows operating system:
    a. Copy only the install directory from the CD to the hard disk, say,
    e:\temp.
    b. Open oraparam.ini and make the following modifications (Assuming CD
    drive is f:)
    * Change the "SOURCE=" line to use the full path to the CD instead of a relative path. (i.e., SOURCE=f:\stage\products.jar)
    * Change the "JRE_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the CD instead of a relative path. (i.e.,JRE_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\jre\1.1.7\1\DataFiles\Expanded)
    * Change the "OUI_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the CD instead of a relative path. (i.e.,OUI_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\oui\1.6.0.9.0\1\DataFiles\Expanded
    * Change the "JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS" line to add "-nojit" as the first
    argument. (i.e., JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -ms16m -mx32m)
    ^^^^^^
    * Other entries should remain the same
    c. Launch setup.exe from the temporary location on your hard drive
    (i.e.,e:\temp\install\win32\setup.exe). This will use the modified
    oraparam.ini and pick up the information from the CD since the
    absolute locations are specified.
    Choose a Custom install and choose not to create a database during the
    install. This way, the Database Configuration Assistant will not be
    launched during installation.
    The Net8 Configuration Assistant will still be launched, and there is
    no way to suppress it. You will need to kill the Net8 Configuration Assistant if it hangs due to the bug. The installation still will have been successful, and you can run the DBCA and NetCA after installation.
    To kill NetCA if it hangs during installation:
    In the "Configuration Tools" window, highlight the "Net8 Configuration
    Assistant" and click "Stop". If that does not work, look for the most recent JRE process using the Task Manager, and kill it manually. NOTE: the OUI itself will also have a jre process. Be sure to kill the one with the most recent date, which should be the jre process being used for Net8CA, not the one for OUI itself.
    After killing the configuration tools and continuing through the installation to the "End of Installation" screen, you should modify the configuration tools to use "-nojit", then call the appropriate tools from the Start Menu.
    I can't download Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition for Solaris 32 bit. After filling out the form with the questions...I click on the actual link, but the box never pops up. The status bar on my Internet Explorer slowly increases, but never allows me to download. It just hangs. I have tried multiple times, and I can download other verions from your site...and have many times in the past. Could you please fix this. Thanks.
    I've looked at it and it seems fine. It might have been a temporary glitch - let us know if you continue to have trouble.
  • Using BizTalk Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition
    Hi All,
     I would like to know what are the Drawbacks of using BizTalk Server Enterprise Edition 2009/2013 with SQL Server Standard Edition vs Enterprise Edition.
    We are currently using Enterprise Edition.
    1) Are there any adverse performance constraints? Microsoft mentions to use SQL Server Enterprise Edition for "Optimal Performance" but does not expand on the topic.
    2) Any features missing?
    2) Is there a supported way to downgrade SQL Enterprise to Standard for an exisiting BTS Environment?
    Thanks!
    1) SQL Standard is limited to 4 CPU's and 64GB of memory while Enterprise is 8 CPU and 2TB or memory.
    2) The only BizTalk feature dependency on a SQL Enterprise feature is BAM Real-Time Aggrigations which requires Analysis Services RTA.
    3) Yes, but it's not a SQL downgrade really, you would move the BizTalk databases:
