Oracle storage white papers

Hi all,
Any one know where I can find some oracle storage white papers?
I have googled it and searched the OTN already but I did not find much on the subject.
I am looking for oracle on storage best practises sort of thing.
Oracle 9i 'Database Performance Tuning Guide and Reference' has a good chapter on it but I was looking for some other sources.
TIA
TechEd

I am looking for oracle on storage best practises
sort of thing. Oracle keeps their white papers online at http://otn.oracle.com ... the ones you are looking for are at http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/techlisting.html#DS
If you want to understand how to use Oracle Technet (OTN) effectively, I've given a long explanation here

  • White papers on security benefits of domain vs workgroup?

    Hi,
I"m a big believer of having a domain for businesses once they have 3 or more computers sharing files, and having employees with a medium or high turnover rate.
I have a client with 8 workstations and while I have convinced them to purchase a Windows 2012 R2 Essentials server and add all their machines to a domain, they aren't convinced that the security was worth the expense (Server was under $2000), and all the
workstations already had Pro OS's, so cost was not significant.
Are there any good white papers on how a domain can help protect from various security standpoints?
    Thanks!
    --Kent

    Hi Kent,
AD has many features that IT Administrator might benefit from.
The first ofwhich is Centralized Authentication.  All user accounts are managed in a single location.  This means that you can use your credentials among any of the machines in the environment.
Another item this allows is better security for sharing resources.  Security groups are very useful for targeting access to resources such as file shares.
Group policy allows to you enforce settings across a number of machines or users.  This would allow you to set different policies for users logging into the Terminal servers vs users logging
    into their workstations.
As for the users, I think you can convince them via AD provide the shared resource and Centralized Authentication features.
By the way, if you decide to use Active Directory, I would recommend to order 2 servers, one is primary and another one is as back up.
This ensures that you do not have a single point of failure for your Active Directory Domain.

Haven't you seen any xerox machine, in that machine we need to put a bundle of white plain papers in order to get a xerox copy of our stuff :) JUST KIDDING !!
White paper is oracle terminology which means technical articles. It has nothing to do with the operation of datbase, they are just articles talking about different oracle technologies and describing way of implementing them. You can download them from www.oracle.com

  • ORA-12154 as oracle user, whit the root account it works fine

    Hello there,
I've a problem with a client installation if I try to connect to the database. I've the following configuration:
    1. Database: Running on a Ubuntu Jeos VM, Oracle 11g (Release 11.1.0.6.0 64 bit)
    2. Client: Running on a CentOS 5.2 VM, Oracle Client 10g Linux 32bit
I've configured the tnsnames.ora and stored it in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory. The content of the tnsnames.ora file is the following:
    ORCL64=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=192.168.12.128)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=orcl)))
If I try to connect to the database as the oracle user with the following command sqlplus SYS@ORCL64 AS SYSDBA, I'll get the ORA-12154  TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified error message. If I try the same as the root user it works fine and I can establish the connection. The same result I've got if I try the command tnsping ORCL64. As the root user the tnsnames adapter can resolve the alias, as the oracle user this is'nt possible and I'll get the error message: TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name. In both he uses the paramter file /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/sqlnet.ora. The content of the sqlnet.ora file is the following:
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT).
Have you any suggestions how can I resolve this problem to get a connection with the oracle user.
    Thank you in advance
    Sven

    Hello,
thanks for your answers. On the CentOS maschine, where the client is installed, there are no directory's $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle and $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl. The output from the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/*ora is:
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 171 28. Apr 21:25 /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/sqlnet.ora
    wx---- 1 root root 118 5. Mai 11:33 /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    The post-install script $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh I've started.
On the Ubuntu Jeos VM, where the database is installed, the output from the 3 directories are:
    ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
    -rwsr-s--x 1 oracle oinstall 188459338 2009-02-23 09:21 /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/bin/oracle

  • Problems connecting to an oracle db whit servlets

    hi there!
I am trying to connect to my Oracle database. When I write my program as a JSP It connects but when I use the same within a servlet.
    It does not work!!!
    I use
    - Tomcat 4.1.24
    - J2SDK 1.4.2
By the way, I have already put the Oracle JDBC JARs (classes12.jar & classes111.jar) in the
TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib directory so my JSP's can find them and they run very well.
And I have defined the CLASSPATH environment variable
Also I have included the JARs files in my lib directory.
    TOMCAT_HOME\webapps\myweb\web-inf\lib
But when i try to compile my servlets can't find the JARs files.
This is the error that I got while compiling.

  • Recommended RAID for Oracle VM server

Hi everyone, im planning on installing OVM manager and server on 5 sun x3-2. 1 Manager and 4 servers... I have to questions:
1.- Which RAID config would be the best for the solution since im using 4X300GB in each server.
2.- Also I have some spare space on a ZFS 7320, but this sun x3-2 servers dont have fiber channel, is ethernet fast enough for a production enviroment?
    thanks

Try looking at these Oracle Technical White Papers for some guidance on RAID and Storage configurations. As a general rule you will always get the best performance and protection from a RAID 10 (1+0) configuration. I know from my own experiences of running VM's on RIAD 5's, 6's, and 10's that I will only run VM's on Raid 10's. The RAID 5 and 6 are far too slow for Production VM's . If you do use Raid 5 and 6 for Test/Devl VM's be aware that you may have serious disk I/O latency issues.
    Good luck, Russell

  • Solaris 11 IPS:  How do you post multiple versions of the same package?

How do you post multiple versions of the same software package on a single IPS instance(port)? Oracle was able to do it here with versions 151 and 175 of S11:
    http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/
Unfortunately, based on my searches, no where in the documentation (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/technologies/ips-323421.html) does it explain to the development community how this is done. The best I can do is create pkg repo instances on different ports to host each different software version.
We are trying to deploy an IPS repository for our drivers and utilities that our customers can link to and pull updates from. We have been able to post a software package to the repository using the command:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 -d ./ Appv1.p5m
This posts the package on the IPS repository instance at port 1234 on the server. However, we would like to post multiple versions of the package on the server at the same URL. Why the same URL? So that our customers and end-users need only point to a single URL to pull down our software rather than having to add a new URL to the publisher list each time we have an update. We want at least 5 of the previous software versions to be available on the server. Posting each version of the application or driver on a different IPS instance on a different port will require customers to add multiple URLs to their publisher list and they also will not be able to initiate remote scans for updates.
Has anybody been able to do this? Is any documentation forthcoming?
    Edited by: user13489824 on Jun 25, 2012 10:17 AM

dhduvall: Thanks for your response. Yes, one would think that as long as the version numbers are different, you should be able to accumulate multiple versions of a package in a repository. It looks like Oracle has done it in their S11 repository unfortunately, as far as I know, they have not shared the steps on how to do this. I would like to publish two versions of the same package. I.E. two different manifests with two different fmri.pkg version strings and two different binaries.
If I publish one package after another like this:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv2.p5m
Then only the second package shows up in the repository, as if it over-wrote the first one.
Running pkgsend with two manifest, like this:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m Appv2.p5m
Will cause pkgsend to combine the packages and manifests as if they were a single package... not what I am trying to do.
Both approaches are complete without errors but neither achieves what I am trying to do.
alan.pae: Thank you. Unfortunately, the link didn't really help. I've read Oracle's white papers and IPS developer guide so I'm familiar with the topics covered.
Lex: Yes, I know. I specified the versions in the pkg.fmri value string.
