Oracle supported flavours of linux

My company is planning to shift all it's oracle operations on to
linux. We do not know which distributions of linux oracle
supports. we work in products like oracle database, jserver, ias
etc. Can you please suggest the distribution of linux we can go
for.
Thanx in advance,

It seems to me as though they all will work but none will
install perfectly cleanly. Each distribution is addressed in
this forum in one way, shape or form. The baseline supported by
Oracle is SuSe but folks in this forum have successfully
installed on Red Hat and Mandrake as well as others. Whichever
distribution you choose do a search in this forum on the
distribution name and browse the posts that are returned. Some
will sound like the end of the world and others have solutions
to common problems.

  • Oracle Forms (Support & Certification) on Linux RedHat AS 4.0 (Intel 32bit)

    Hello,
Does anybody know for sure if Oracle is certifying Forms (part of Application Server 10.1.2.2) on Linux RedHat AS 4.0 (Intel 32 bit). We are trying to move from v3.0 to v.4.0, however without Oracle support, that might not happen.
Any help or guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Kunal Bansal

I did search in Metalink indeed. This document is really the latest certification they have. But funny thing is that the rda.sh script Oracle released checks for RH4 in addition to RH3. I have my test iAS server (10.1.2.0.2) and iDS (same version) installed on RH 3 (just in case) but I have installed iAS server in 2 different places (for deployment) on RH 4 - both went just fine. I know there is a document on Metalink, explaining how to install on RH 4 - basically, they released a small patch set for those who wants to install on RH 4. I did apply that patchset (it is for OUI not for the forms). My quick solution to implement this patchset was to create a staging directory (disk1, ...) and then replace couple of files located under disk1 staging directory with the files that comes with the patchset (unzipped into a separate place), then start the installation of 10.1.2.0.2 on RH 4. Everything then went just perfect on RH 4. No problems reported so far (2 separate installations on 2 separate sites on RH 4). I don't know if this helps but just wanted to provide some feedback.

  • Oracle support for Weblogic 7 under LINUX

    Hi,
Does anyone know what happened to oracle support in weblogic 7.0 for linux platform,
as it seems that the drivers are not included? Are there any discussions on that
    topic anywhere?
    thanks.
    Zlatko

It DOES appear that there is support for WebLogic jDriver for Oracle on Linux:
    see http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/certifications/certifications/redhat_linux.html#39532
The strange thing here is that, apparently, the Oracle drivers located @ lib/linux/i686/oci817_8/libweblogicoci38.so
and lib/linux/i686/oci817_8/libweblogicoxa38.so are "Type 2" ODBC drivers which
require an Oracle client to be installed on the WebLogic machine, but Oracle doesn't
support installation of the client on RedHat 7.2, which is required (according
BEA's doc) for installation of WebLogic 7.0. Can someone reconcile this apparent
    conflict?

  • LInux and Oracle Support

    Hello:
I'm looking to buy a laptop and have a Linux operating system installed on it. I also need to install Oracle 11g and SQL Developer.
As far as support for Oracle is concerned, what Linux distribution works best with Oracle and is supported by Oracle? I know that Ubuntu isn't supported very well.
    Thank you for the guidance.

Since OEL uses RHEL as a base, they are practically identical except for vendor-specific branding. Either may have updates or fixes not in the other, but they mostly track pretty well.
You can find the purchase price of RHEL on their web site http://www.redhat.com; anything I could say would be second-hand rumor :D
Note that although Fedora is a Red Hat project, it is not the same as RHEL and is thus not supported as an O/S by Oracle. Some people have been able to get Oracle products to work on it, but I'd not recommend that for a newbie.
    Cheers

The problem is Oracle usually don't provide direct Oracle Client download except for Windows. You need to download the Server installation file and install the client piece. The download files are rather large.
and is there any other tool which i can install instead of oracle client? It depends on what you plan to do with Oracle client and why you need it.
On alternative is instance client, it has direct download for all supported platform.

After downloading all the 3 Oracle 9.0.1 Database CD images in binary for Linux Intel from the Oracle Technology network, Disk1 and Disk2 images were found to be bad.
Disk 1 and Disk2 images could not be decompressed using gunzip or cpio. The following errors occur on linux

Yes. The filesizes of the Oracle 901 Intel images
on OTN match with what I downloaded in binary mode.
I found a reference in one of the DBMS forums on OTN
which suggested using the download tool from Getright.
Using the getright tool and the direct url link path
reference I downloaded the oracle 901 Linux images again
from OTN. This time I was able to run gunzip and
cpio -imdv successfully on all the 3 oracle 901 Linux

  • Can you install Oracle 10g on REDHAT LINUX ENTERPRISE WS?

According to oracle documentation, it says you can install oracle10g on Redhat enterprise version 3 or 4, but it doesn't specify whether its Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS or WS. Can you install oracle 10g on Rehat Linux Enterprise WS?

Oracle Certificaction Matrices says only RedHat AS/ES is supported for database. AFAIK WS means workstation.
Also this link is very clear: http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_61_1135.shtm
Besides the above sentences... If the WS installation is providing all required packages (listed in installtion prerequisites) I belive that Oracle DB could be installed on WS but as I (and the above link) said it is not officialy supported.

  • Differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform

J would like to know if there are some differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform.
I know that there are some differences on Oracle 8i Parallel Server and i know that some products are not include like precompiler (Mod*Ada, Pro*FORTRAN) on a Linux Platform.
    Thank you.

We have installed Oracle 8i on Solaris 8 and it had a great performance, of course that the hardware and licence invested here was costed my the office where i work. Personaly i'd installed linux reh hat 8 and oracle 8i, imagine that, it could be implemented by any individual that has the time to do so.
By buyinng from a company that has a good background you could be sure that you will have support.
Bottom line, if you have the $ to buy great hardware go for a unix platform. But if you don't a Red Hat Linux Server Licence with a 1 year sopport and Oracle data base is about 3500Dls.

Will 10g install on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10? If so, what setting do I need to change to get it to install?

Yes, it will install. Oracle supports it.Apparently they forgot to tell support. Certify still holds at SLES 9.

  • Oracle 9i client for linux & PHP

I'm looking to connect PHP on my linux server to a remote oracle server running 9i. I have been unsuccessful in finding good documentation on this process, as most people are either using windows or connecting to a local server.
As far as I can tell, you must install the oracle client for linux, then recompile PHP with oracle support. So:
    1) Is this the best method to do this, and if so where can I get an oracle client for linux?
    2) Is there a location where I can get the oracle extension for PHP without having to recompile PHP?

I believe the extensions are refered to in the php.ini
    and need to be setup.
    ;Windows Extensions
;Note that MySQL and ODBC support is now built in, so no dll is needed for it.
    extension=php_oracle.dll
;Don't know if this is needed and whether there is a
    ;php_oci9.dll
    ;extension=php_oci8.dll
which can be found by this:
    extension_dir = "C:\WINDOWS"
I am trying to perform a similar task, well, sort of. I am running Oracle 9i (9.2.0.1.0) on a Win2003Server machine and do not want to build PHP either.
Please let me know if you find your answer.

  • Oracle support under PHP / 8i or 9 and a RedHat 9 / Apache 1.3.X machine

    Hi,
I have a server (currently 7.1) with apache + php
compiled with oracle (and mcrypt, imap, gettext) support.
In order to do so I've installed the 8i linux
version, make a tar.gz of the libs directory and
    installed in my server.
I runs fine accessing a remote (not mantained by me)
    oracle database.
I am planning to switch to a newer distribution and
was considering the RH9 but with the "old" 1.3.x apache.
Since I do not actually use Oracle (just enable php
scripts to do so) I am kind of lost if the combo (old
8i libs with redhat 9) are stable enough or should I
try a newer version, such as oracle 9.
And in that case if is there a "developers" package/installation that enables me just to install the required libs/headers without having to actually install the whole db.
Since the answer can be slighty OT fell free to send
    me directly.
    Thanks.

I'm in a similar situation where i'm migrating from Win2k + PHP & want oracle support to connect to a remote server.
I got as far as installing redhat 9 & installing the oracle client.
I still can't get oracle to work in PHP though. doing a bit of research I dont think the redhat 9 RPM's come with oracle support compiled. I really dont want to be maintaining custom compiled php versions i'd rather just have up2date do it all. I hear you can get ODBC to work with oracle, but most of the stuff i've looked at covers doing this on windows, not linux.
If anyone out there has manager to get PHP & oracle working on RH9, without re-compiling PHP please let me know!
