Oracle versions and Windows OS

Hi,
I will be getting back into the Oracle/IT business after 5 years.
When I left we were running Oracle 8i on backend Solaris servers and running Windows 2000 on the desktops/laptops.
Just curious what Windows OS the DBAs use on the desktops/laptops now ?
Also, what is Oracle 10g.............and 11i ?
Many thanks for your help !

HI,
Well lots of stuff has changed since 8i. Ying has mentioned already about the Windows o/s.
The database versions have undergone massive changes since 8i. And the latest flagship is 11g. Before that, it was 10g which was the starting version of the Grid based database systems.
11i or more reccent version 12i , are the application products commonly known as Oracle Apps Suite. This is for the ERP application.
As Ying mentioned, check the oralce documentation for getting in touch with the latest happenings.

  • External table in Oracle 10g and Windows server 2003 problem

I'm having a problem accessing an external table in an Oracle 10g and Windows 2003 server environment. The disk is remote (mapped) to the server. It's the usual access errors, kup-04001 or kup-04063.
I have the [seemingly] exact same setup in an Oracle 9i and Windows 2000 server environment which works perfectly. Services run as local SYSTEM and SYSTEM has full permissions on the disk. Directories exist and so do the permissions to the directories.
In the Oracle 10g and Windows 2003 environment, services run as local SYSTEM and SYSTEM has full permissions on the mapped disk. Directories exist and so do the permissions to the directories.
This obviously effects mappings, deployments, etc.
Does anyone know if something changed in either the db or the os?
    Thank you,
    Michael

    Thank you for your reply.
Your proposal is the standard solution. As a matter of fact, that's how it is on my "old" system. Server "A" Oracle services are started by SYSTEM. Server "B" Oracle services are started by SYSTEM and is where the flat files reside. SYSTEM has full permissions on a disk local to Server "B". Database directoriies defined on Server "A" point to Server "B" remote disk. External Tables on Server "A" are defined with directories that point to Server "B" remote (mapped) disk. I have no problems with this configuration.
I'm having a problem acheiving the same configuration with Oracle 10g and Windows 2003. I guess I'm baffled over the fact it isn't working the same way as my "old" environment. Why shouldn't it? Oracle (and you) want me to start services as a specific user. It shouldn't have to be that way unless something changed in the way the database makes calls to the os or if Microsoft slipped something in with one of it's numerous security patches.

  • Oracle Version for Windows 7 ??

    Hi,
I had 10g on Vista 64bit prior but now since I have switched to Windows 7,sadly 10g doesn't work for me anymore :( I searched around and found that Oracle 10g supports Windows NT kernel version 4.0,5.0,5.1 means Xp and Vista and designed for that and windows 7 based on NT 6.1 so no support for it by 10g.
So I wanted to know which version should I use of Oracle 11g?? I will be giving my certification exam soon so wanted to practice,so kindly help me out :)

11.2 will be the first version of Oracle to be certified on Windows 7. 11.2 for Windows, last I checked, is scheduled to be released some time in Q1 of 2010.
I have installed 11.1 on Windows 7 laptops that seem to be working. It's not certified, and there may well be issues with certain components, but I haven't personally encountered any issues.

If we change to Windows 2008 64 Bit do i need to install Oracle 11g http server?

  • Oracle 9i and windows 2003 R2 installation issues

    Hi All,
I have a windows 2003 R2 server with oracle 9.2.0.8 installed both OS and DB are 32bit. The server has 12gb ram and I therefore use AWE and /PAE, however when ever the number of connections exceeds >60 memory errors start to appear and sessions crash. Has anyone out there carried out a successful install of 9i and windows 2003 R2. Can anyone help with the resolution of these issues.
    regards
    Alan

    some more information
I’ve just restarted the server with its full quota of 16GB of RAM and selected both boot.ini switches (/PAE and /3GB) at server startup. I then amended the dbblock_lru_latches parameter from 128 to 64. Before I even started the database I tried running ‘ipconfig /all’ at the command prompt with the following result:
    D:\Oracle>ipconfig /all
    Windows IP Configuration
An internal error occurred: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
is it windows causing these issues?

  • Oracle Versions and RAC

We are considering running Oracle 10g and 11g RAC on the same cluster.. wondering if anyone has tried it before ? If yes, any recommendations ?
    Thanks,
    G

Cost is the big factor. We have certain environments that have no intention of moving to 11.. but some do. Cost moves around. This is simply trading one kind of cost for another. Especially if all environments are covered by an Oracle Support contract. Then the cost is not Oracle related.
But that ultimately is a PHB decision.
Instead of buying dedicated RAC clusters for the offending ones.. its a thought to run 2 versions on the same servers... ofcourse with the higher CRS.However, yes you can run run a mix ... as Dan says, not necessarily recommended. MUST use highest available CRS and be very careful that the CRS supports all version of the DB.
(And plan on having your interconnect flooded.)
I highly recommend testing the bejazis out of it to verify your shop can indeed handle the configuration.

  • Advis to newbie for Oracle version and tutorial

    Hello All,
I would like to learn Oracle and had never had the opportunity to use it. I am now deciding to download oracle for educational purpose and train myself.
I read that the recent release was oracle 11g and noticed more support online for 10g. Can you kindly advise for a new beginner which version will best suit me to learn oracle (interested in dabase and developer).
Also where can I find easy step by step tutoiral for oracle 11g ?
Thanks in Advance for your answer and hope your response will not benefit other newbies too.
    Dave

You can check all the details in Oracle Site itself. Oracle.com
You can choose 10G it better for learning than 11G as most of them may have 10G.
By the bye you can check the Oracle by Example for the step step info in the following link

Learn concepts along with lot of documentations available in oracle.com itself

  • When I visit FAFSA.gov im told browser is incompatible.I have the newest version and windows 7.Why do sites say browser is incompatible?

That pretty well sums it. I am trying to fill out info for gov. aid and can not because the site does not seem to recognize that I have the newest version for windows 7 already.I also get this message on sites like yahoo.games. The site wont let me play some games due to the same.

The FAFSA site doesn't work with Firefox 4+ versions.
You can install the portable Firefox 3.6.x version to access websites that do not work with Firefox 5+.

  • Oracle 11gR2 and Windows 8

Yes I know it's not officially supported...
...but having acknowledged that, has anyone tried? I was able to install it and create a DB but I can't get the listener to start (it won't create the service either), just get a TNS-12560 on LSNRCTL START. I am logged into Windows as an admin level user.

Oracle Database for 32-bit Windows is supported on the following operating systems:
Windows Server 2008 - Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web, and Foundation editions. The Server Core option is not supported.
    Ref : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24281/toc.htm#BGBEEBAD
regarding error : make sure you have set oracle sid and oracle home correctly, and services are started on services.msc
ORACLE_SID has no bearing on the listener. ORACLE_HOME does.
