Oracle VM on New Dell Server

Hi,
we have a new Dell server with 8*300 GB Disk configured on RAID 10. My plan is to install Oracle VM on it. I would like some recommendation on the ideal Raid Stripe Size can be used.
Can you please give some input on this.
Thanks,
Blesson

Depends on what you plan to run on your server. Is it going to be part of a pool with other servers, and use shared storage? Then local disk striping is basically irrelevant. Or if this is going to be used as a single server pool, then you configure the striping as you would for the operating system and applications you run in the guests.

  • VMware migration of a VM from a whitebox server to a new Dell server

and Yes I am working on our sales team to convince them of the benefits of a real license!!

    Hi all
I have been tasked to migrate a new client's virtual server. The present server is just a white box with a single 1TB sata hard drive. The new server is a new Dell T430 with 4x1TB drives.
Both are running the free version of ESX 5.5.
Besides doing a vmware convert or downloading it to a hard drive and then uploading it to the new server, does anyone have any ideas?
Is there some way of mounting the SATA drive in the new Dell server and having the other ESX server see that storage to do a copy?
I thought about Veeam but not sure if that will work without the storage APIs.

  • New Dell Server with OpenManage Essentials adds SQL Server 2012 Native Client to existing SQL Server 2008R2 in SBS 2011

Had to upgrade my server to new Dell T320. Support wanted me to install OpenManage Essentials which unfortunately installed SQL Server 2912 native client. Now I have 2 sqlserv apps running at the same time.
Is there a problem with SBS 2011 Standard running two different SQL Server native clients?
I have no idea why Dell OpenManage did not use the existing 2008R2 native client, but that is the way it is.
Can I combine or upgrade the database so they all use one and not both?
    Thanks
    Gerald Fay

    Hi,
I have asked some who similar the SQL product, in general you can install the different version SQL client on the same operation system, but when the OpenManage Essentials
install a SQL instance on your SQL server, it will automatic upgrade same SQL component to the newer version.
For example, if your SQL server is 2008r2, you install the OpenManage Essentials built-in SQL instance which version is higher(such as 2012), by default it will automatic
upgrade the same SQL component to SQL 2012, I don’t similar with the OpenManage Essentials
tool, I think you can ask DELL® support for the further support.
    Thanks.

  • Oracle VM 2.1.5 on Dell Server R170

    Hi ,
I am installing Oracle VM 2.1.5 on a new Dell Server R710 with E5520 processor and I cannot go past this on the screen or continue installation.
"CPU #(0) not listed in BIOS" .
I am installing 64BIT Oracle VM. I have enabled Virtualization Technology in the BIOS but still the same issue. Does anyone have some experience in solving this issue.
    Thanks

Does the EL5 base release (with kernel version 2.6.18-8) work on this server? That's the kernel version used by OVM. If it does, then OVM should work without problems. If it doesn't, then your server hardware is most likely too new, and not supported yet. You could try tweaking kernel parameters when you boot the installer, but which ones depends on your particular hardware.

  • Vm server install on new dell t410 cant find disks

I am trying to install Oracle VM server on a new dell t410 with a raid1 configured (or i have also tried without it configured) and it just does not seem to recognize the drive.
    I tried alt-f2
    lvm
as it says you can in the install guide but lvm does not seem to run
So far nothing is bringing up the drive info
    Thanks

The simplest solution is, as you suggested, creating an LVM volume group, and create one large lv.

I have installed Weblogic 10.3.2 and Forms and Reports 11.1.0 ontop.
I have configured my forms in the same way as 10g iAS, by adding to formsweb.cfg etc etc. The forms are fine.

Alternatively, instead of uning the in-process server, how can I add a new report server and use that intead? I would prefer to add a new report server. I cannot see the section in the doco that explains this.

Hello and sorry for been an inexperience dba.
Now I need to install 9i oracle version in the same server (solaris os-5.9) where is previously installed a 8i. I'm reading the installation guide and I know that I have to make two different oracle home, and then two different owners .
My problem is when I've seen the kernel parameters and their permissions and of course all of them have the owner the old oracle user.
Do you know if I have to change some of this parameters?

On Windows this is caused most often by the temporary directory setting.
Change the temporary directory to some fixed directory writable by anybody, e.g. "C:\temp".
    Change this in:
    Registry entry: hkey_local_machine\software\oracle\key_<oashome>\REPORTS_TMP
<oashome>\opmn\conf\opmn.xml: search for environment variable TEMP (under ias-instance)
    Good luck!

  • Oracle 9I Database, and Mobile Server install history

    Dear Oracle technical representative:
This TAR started out as a true request for help in solving installation problems with Oracle 9i Release 2 Enterprise Edition, and Oracle 9i Mobile Server Release 5.0.1, but it has turned into a history of frustration with out of date, laconic, and often incorrect, and misleading documentation. As a software developer, I understand that documentation is always out of date, at least mine is. Nonetheless, I must speak my mind while understanding, and sympathizing with your situation.
I struggled through the documentation, and managed to get everything working. While I was doing that, I wrote down the step by step procedure that I used to get Database, and Mobile Server running. By sharing this rough install history with you, it is my hope that it will help prevent others from experiencing the same difficulties that I have had. It has been my observation that when a user has problems installing a trial software package they give up quickly, and do not purchase a copy. It is thus extremely important that the installation instructions, and quick start guide be accurate, attentive to detail, and well written. The first impression is the one that counts.
The Oracle 9i Lite Installation, and Configuration Guide for Windows NT shipped with Oracle 9i Lite Release 5.0.1 definitely requires, and emergency rewrite. It is terribly out of date, inaccurate, and laconic. My guess is that it is a very sloppy rewrite of poorly written 8i documentation. The Oracle 9i Database Installation Guide for Windows is somewhat better. It however should do a better job informing you that before installing onto a old server the Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC), and VC runtime libraries must be up to date. The history describes the trouble with not having the MFC42.dll at version 6. Another corker is that the default port the installer presents is 2030, and not 1521, and that leads to major confusion in the both the Database, and Mobile Server installs.
Thank you for looking at the history. I hope that it will be of use to you when you update your documentation.

TAR for Oracle 9i Release 2 Database Enterprise Edition, and Oracle Lite Release 5.0.1 Mobile Server
Installation problems are highlighted in red.
    Installation sequence/history:
         1. Installed Windows NT 4.0 Server SP1 on Dell Power Edge 4300 dual x86 server to wipe the slate clean.
         2. Setup TCP/IP, and IPX/SPX networks
              Computer name YGGDRASILL
              Host name = YGGDRASILL
              Domain = CFR.MSSTATE.EDU
              Internet name = YGGDRASILL.CFR.MSSATE.EDU = 130.18.130.225
         3. Installed NT SP3, and Internet Explorer 4.01 from the NT 40 Options Pack CD as the gateway to installing MTS 2.0, and IIS 4.0.
         4. Installed MTS 2.0, and IIS 4.0 from NT 4.0 Optins Pack CD.
         5. Applied NT 4.0 SP6.
         6. Installed Internet Explorer 5.5 as a prerequisite to installing MADAC 2.6.
         7. Installed MDAC 2.6
         8. Installed Paint Shop Pro 7 for capturing error screens.
         9. As previous install errors stated that the ordinal function xxxx could not be found in MFC42.dll, the latest version (6.0.8665.0) of the dll was installed, and registered from MS VC++ SP5. Also I upgraded MSVCIRT.dll, MSVCRT.dll, MSCRT40.dll, and added MSVC60.dll from SP5 to be on the safe side.
According to the installation documents all the prerequisites for installing Oracle 9i Release 2 Database Enterprise Edition are satisfied.
         10. Began install of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition with target parameters:
              Home directory = D:\Oracle\Ora92
              Database directory = D:\Oracle\oradata
              Global database name = FIA.YGGDRASILL.CFR.MSSTATE.EDU
              Port = 2030
              SID = FIA
              SYSTEM Password = phwphw
              SYS Password = phwphw
              SCOTT Password = phwphw
DBSNMP Password = I left this one unassigned or empty.
tnsnames.ora entry for remote TCP/IP connection
              a. CD 1 of 3 load
                   1. Error writting to MFC42u.dll. Action ignore. A check indicated that MFC42u.dll version did not match the updated version of MFC42.dll. Plan is to update after install. Unicode version of MFC is probably not used by the installer.
              b. CD 1 completed with only one problem, and CD 2 load begins.
              c. CD 2 installed without incident., and CD 3 load begins, and completes without farther problems. The only issue to address at this time is to update the MFC42u.dll.
                   HTTP Server URLs
                        http://7778
                        https://4443
         12. Evaluation of install success begins.
              a. Oracle HTTP Service will not start. It is of particular interest that on installs that I do not upgrade the MFC42.dll the Oracle HTTP Service will start correctly, but during the install I get the error message Ordinal nnnn not found in MFC42.dll, and the Oracle MTS Recovery Service crashes during the install. I am caught between a rock and hard spot on this one. See the Figure 1. At the end of this document. I do not need the HTTP Server at this time but I will need it later and this issue must be resolved. It appears that it hangs during startup. I am sorry but I lost the ordinal number nnnn.
When I try to start the HTTP server from the Programs menu. It Hangs, and does not return an error message. See Figure 2, and the included Apache Setup.txt, the install log, and the HTTPd.conf . The conf, and setup files look OK to me. What is the problem?
              b. All other services start correctly.
              c. Logged into the database as SCOTT on the server with SQL Plus using the connection information:
                   FIA.CFR.MSSTATE.EDU =
                   (DESCRIPTION =
                   (ADDRESS_LIST =
                   (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = yggdrasill)(PORT = 1521))
                   (CONNECT_DATA =
                   (SERVER = DEDICATED)
                   (SERVICE_NAME = FIA.YGGDRASILL.CFR.MSSTATE.EDU)
I created some tables, inserted data, and queried for the data. Everthing seems to be working correctly.
              d. Logged in remotely from my AOL account on a dial-up line using Oracle 9i Release 2 Personal Edition installed on my ThinkPad. Every thing tested out as above. I used the connection information:
                   FIA.CFR.MSSTATE.EDU =
                   (DESCRIPTION =
                   (ADDRESS_LIST =
                   (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = yggdrasill.cfr.msstate.edu)(PORT = 1521))
                   (CONNECT_DATA =
                   (SERVER = DEDICATED)
                   (SERVICE_NAME = FIA.YGGDRASILL.CFR.MSSTATE.EDU)
         13. I concluded that except for the Oracle HTTP Server Service not starting correctly, and that after updating the MFC42u.dll to VC++ SP5 level the stage is set for installing Oracle 9i Mobile Server Release 5.0.1. I copied the MFC42u.dll to the server and registered it successfully.
         14. As Visual Studio 6.0 Professional updates all of the MFC stuff, I decides to install it at this juncture, and apply SP5.
         15. Installed JDK1.3.1 required for Oracle 9i Mobile Server Release 5.0.1
At this time the prerequisites for installing Oracle 9i Mobile Server Release 5.0.1 are satisfied, and MFC, and rt are at version 6.
It is important to note that after installing MS Visual Studio Professional 6.0 SP5, the HTTP server started working. It is clear that prior to installing Oracle Database it is essential that MFC, and possibly other components are upgraded before starting an installation of Oracle. This probably only applies to old NT servers, but it should be mentioned in the installation instructions.
         16. Attempt to install Oracle Mobile Server Release 5.0.1
              a. File locations Screen
                   Name: = OraLite501
                   Path: = D:\OraLite501
              b. Select Mobile Server at Installation Screen
              c. Mobile Server Repository Database Information Screen
                   Hostname = YGGDRASILL = hostname from tnsnames.ora
Port = 2030 = same as Database port
It is troublesome that the port in tsnames.ora is 1521, and not 2030 as was specified in the database install. I will try this port on the reinstall. On the retry, it worked. The problem was that I was mislead by the default port of 2030 at the database install. The database was actually installed on port 1521, and I was not given an error message, or warning. As I am a first time installer of Oracle products this threw me for a loop. The default port for the database needs to be 1521, if regardless of what the user specifies for a port you are going to install on port 1521.
Net Service Name = FIA.YGGDRASILL.CFR.MSSTATE.EDU = Global database name as required by installation instructions.
              d. Yes. At Do you want to install the Mobile Server Repository question.
              e. At Oracle Protocol Support, I checked the SPX box.
              f. Summary, and Install screens function to specifications.
              g. Mobile Server Repository Wizard
                   Database System password:
                        Password = phwphw
              h. Mobile Server Repository Wizard
                   Schema Name: fiafield
                   Password : fiafield
              i. Success at last with the install part. The problem was the wrong port number. See my above comments on this problem, and how Oracle could grease the skids for the next first time installer.
         j. I could not find the httpd.conf file in the place the install instructions said it should be for running the Mobile Server in Oracle HTTP Server. Since only one copy of httpd.conf existed, I added the include D:\OraLite501\mobile\server\bin\wtgias.conf to the bottom of the file assuming that it is the correct one. I the re-booted instead of using apache -k restart. The Oracle HTTP Server started, so there is hope. The install instructions state that the httpd.conf file would most likely be in the program files directory, when they are really installed in the Oracle Lite home directory.
         k. According to the documentation the Mobile Server should start when the Oracle HTTP Server starts with the wtgias.conf file added to the httpd.conf file. It does not. If I use Process Explorer, I know that Apache loaded the wtgias.conf, because both Apache.exe processes that are running have the wtgias.dll loaded. The facts are at this stage of the game are
              1. OraMTSRecoveryService is started
              2. OracleOraHome92HTTPService is started
              3. OracleOraHome92Listener is started on port
              4. OracleServiceFIA is started
              5. Apache.exe has the wtgias.dll loaded
              6. The Moble Server is not running and it should be if the documentation is correct.
              7. If I start the Mobile Server either as a service using wtgsvc -i or with the webtogo command from the DOS prompt, the Mobile Server starts, but when I attempt to log in with the URL http://Yggdrasill:7778/webtogo/startup it inform me the Mobile Server is not started and it is. Figure 3 shows the response I receive from the login attempt.
         l. I finally ran the Mobile Server in total debug mode using the command webtogo -d0", and it gave me the subtle hint that the correct URL is
              http://Yggdrasill.cfr.msstate.edu/webtogo/startup.
When I use the above URL and I can login to the Mobile Server with UN = fiafield, and PW = fiafield. I was confused by the documentation. I was under the assumption that the host address would be either http://Yggdrasill:7778, or http://Yggdrasill:4443. After all when I, installed Oracle Database these URLs were listed. It needs to be made clear in the installation guide for the mobile server that the Mobile Server address is http://Your servers WWW address/webtogo/startup, and the statements about the Mobile Server will start when the Oracle HTTP Server is started needs to be removed since they are incorrect. Also, the documentation should clearly state that the Schema Name, and Password given in the Repository Wizard Screen are synonymous with the username, and password for the Mobile Server login.
         m. After determning the hard way that the Mobile Server does not start when the the Oracle HTTP Server starts, and that the correct URL is http://Internet address/webtogo/startup = http://Yggdrasill.cfr.msstate.edu/webtogo/startup, I decide to start the Mobile Server as a service with the command wtgsvc -i. After I re-booted, to my surprise, I could not login to the Mobile Server. When I checked the system services, the webtogo service was running. So to give the start as a service thing a fair chance I re-booted again, but obtained the same results. I thus concluded that the Mobile Server will not run correctly as a service. As it turns out my conclusion was wrong. After waiting a few minutes, my login try was successful. The documentation should indicate that after booting it may be a minute or two before the Mobile Server service become available.
         n. After some serious problems with the installer, and the documentation everything is working. I have a green light to go on to the next stage, which is program the handheld to take advantage of the Mobile Server. I will be glad to get back to programming, and am so thankful that I am not a network administrator.

  • New production server PLUS upgrade!

After years of groveling, weekly church visits, and burning incense, it appears that I will finally be able to get a new production server for our 3.3 TB data warehouse. They are also going to add 2 TB of space to our main storage array.
In addition, management wants to upgrade from 10.2.0.3 to 11gR2 as part of that migration. Our current server was not able to handle 11g, according to Oracle.
In recent times, I have had to do some very non-standard things as a dba, mostly due to insufficient resources. So these migrations may not be as straightforward as what you read in the docs, and therefore I would like some opinions about how best to achieve the migration to the new box, and to 11gR2.
Our current environment is a Sunfire 6800 Sparc 64 box with 12 900mhz cpus and 16G of ram, and Solaris 10.
Most of our datafiles are housed on a 3.7 TB Sun 2540 storage array, but due to space and performance constraints, it was decided to put one very large and mostly unimportant tablespace (350G) on a 2.1 TB Sun 3511 array. We also put our 2 temporary tablespaces (about 54G) on that array. Also on the 3511 array is our db_recovery_file_dest area, with all of our archived redo logs and flashback logs. Due to lack of space there, I have to direct our RMAN database file backups, archived log backups, and exports to an unsupported Hitachi SAN, which is 8 years old, like our Sunfire 6800.
The new server is a Sun M4000 with Solaris 10, so the OS will not be an issue. It will have 4 4-way 2.5ghz processors and 32G of ram. The newly expanded 2540 array will have enough space to hold us for a few years. It is currently 3.7TB, using 2.6 of that. When expanded, it will be about 5.8TB.
My mission is to move all of the temporary tablespace and other data files (about 1 TB) and the exports (1 TB) to the newly expanded 2540. We will keep the space (2.1 TB) allocated on the 3511 attached to the new server, but it will be used ONLY for recovery-related files; rman backups, flashback logs, archived logs, etc. My goal is to keep at least two full rman backups in that space, along with all the necessary archived log backups. We are supposed to get everything off of the old SAN. So, there will be a lot of file shuffling, nothing new for this shop.
My plan would be to install 10.2.0.3 (same exact version) on the new server, then hook it up to the existing storage arrays. (My boss thinks that will reformat all of the disks on those arrays, but I don't think that is necessarily true. I believe it is possilble to mount each file system on those arrays to the new box, so long as they have been unmounted from the old one. Then again, I am not a Unix Admin)
Next, I would startup-mount the database, move the necessary files to the 2540 using Oracle and Unix commands, then shut down the db. Then, I would install 11gR2 with all patches on the new server, and upgrade the database manually, in place.
If my boss is right and connecting the new server to the existing arrays means re-initializing them, he asked if we could use our last RMAN backup to restore the database in the new environment. I said if we were still running 10g at that time on the new server, and all the file systems were identical, that should be possible. However, I should note that we do NOT use an RMAN catalog (RMAN uses the controlfile). We have no place to put an RMAN catalog. I have never even had a place to test doing a restore with RMAN.
If anyone out there has been through a migration to a new server along with an Oracle upgrade, I would appreciate any ideas on the best way to go about it.

    Hi,
Its not recommended to upgrade OS and Database same time. I would recommend :
    1) Migrate database from Old Server to new Severs.
-> Install OS, packages, patches, create users, groups, mount points and configure kernel parameters as required.
-> Restore $ORACLE_HOME, inventories, mount all data partitions on same mount points similar to old servers
-> Perform relink for all oracle home binaries using command relink all command.
    Refer tech notes:

    2) Then perform an upgrade for your database.

  • Server 2003 SBS (with Exchange 2003) migrate to new machine Server 2012 Standard (with Exchange 2013)

    This is what I have:
A very outdated machine running a small domain, SBS 2003 and Exchange - this is the ONLY server currently.
This is what my boss ordered:
A Dell R210 II machine with Server 2012 Standard (and I downloaded the trial for Exchange 2013).
He wants the old server completely replaced and gone - with everything moved over (including Exchange) to the new machine. The main reason for the upgrade is that not all users can access email on their machines (Macs, new versions of Outlook, etc.)
I have set up a new standalone server before but never migrated one - and I've found that going from SBS2003/Exchange2003 to Server2012/Exchange2013 is not simple in the least.
I thought I could just set up the new server as a DC on the domain and have everything replicated to it from the source server. Then I could decommission the old server. I have been told that 1) I can't upgrade Exchange 2003 to 2013 and 2) that I shouldn't
put Exchange on a DC. What do you do if you only have the one server?

    Hi,
Just additional. Please also refer to following threads and article, then check if can help you.

  • Oracle 8i to MS SQL Server replication

Im new to Oracle, but a MS SQL Server DBA. Im helping in the architecture of a data warehouse that pulls from some disparate sources, including Oracle 8i, into a SQL Server 2000 box. We could use batch processing to pull updated data from the Oracle database to populate our data warehouse, but we were hoping to get real-time transactional processing via some replication scenario. My terminology may be wrong from the Oracle perspective, but I think the transactional replication that SQL Server supports is called synchronous replication in Oracle. My question is, does anybody know how to do synchronous replication from an Oracle server to a SQL Server? Or perhaps which Oracle product supports it? Thanks!

    ===========================================================
I'm working on the similar requirements, exactly my source DB is DB2, and the target DB is Oracle. I have two year experience with Oracle, but I know nothing about DB2. There a about 50 tables in source DB. Transactions on source DB is not too heavy(less than 10/Second), and the mainfram are all powerful.
I've though about Oracle Gateway, but I'd rather save it as the backup solution. For one thing, neither co-workers nor I have experience with it. Second, I'm afraid the Gateway performance would not be satisfactory. Furthermore, words has it that we should pay for the Gateway. So My ideas to real-time replication of the two DB is as following:
    (1) use trigger in DB2 to reponse to immediate transactions in source DB;
    (2) use Embedded C/SQL to extract those transactions into flat files;
    (3) FTP files to the target server;
    (4) On target server, SHELL scripts read the files and call Pro*C to apply the transactions into Oracle DB.
but, some problems really get me.
A: in step(1) and (2), How to set EC to do its work in reponse to trigger? I know that one can call host script in Oracle trigger, but I have no idea about DB2 trigger. Maybe, I can create a real-time monitoring EC process to address it. what's your opinion?
B: I should maintain all transaction metadata by myself. e.g. INSERT, UPDATE old/new data, DELETE info. It is originally covered by the database, and it isn't easy to handle it squarely.
C: How to address some exception? like database rollback, the process recovery in case of any interruptions in the above steps.
Could you share me some idea, Thank you!
