Oracle VM server Install - Media Test on bootable CD fails
I have made 3 cd's on 2 different machines and when I run them to install the VM Server on a machine with a clean hard drive (ok irrelevant) I get an error when I try to run the Media Test. I have verified the checksums on the original ZIP files I downloaded and even downloaded a second copy of the zip to check it - I still get the error. I verified the CD as a part of the Burn process. (Note: I did do this on a different machine than I used to boot/read/install VM Server from.
Before you continue to read below - I guess my primary question is how safe was it to ignore the failure of the media test?
I created the cd with NERO 9 using Nero Burning ROM and selecting CD-ROM (ISO) when I drag the ISO file to Nero I get a message:
"You have added a single image file to an empty compilation. To burn the content of this type of image to a disc, please use the 'Burn Compilation'
function from the main menu.
Would you like to close the current compilation and burn the image instead?"
When I say yes and take the option I get a disc that has the contents of the ISO broken into many files (as I would expect to make a bootable disk). When I say no and then subsequently Burn the disc (without adding any extra files) it creates a disc with one file (the original ISO) on the disc.
It seems like it is trying to verify the the checksum of the original iso file? Or am I missing something. I got frustrated and used the disc without running the media test and it seems to run fine and the VM Server that was installed on my hard drive boots up fine as far as I can see.
Please feel free to point me to a link that explains UNIX (I have used UNIX but have not installed a UNIX system since the early 1980's) boot disk setup - I feel that there is something I am not understanding.
On a similar note I have created the Oracle VM Manager disk with the same process as above to make it a bootable disk. The documentation says that I do not have a bootable version of the Manager disc. Should I have created a disc with the ISO file intact on it instead?
OK I just did some research and now I understand that ISO type files are an archive type (like zip or tar.gz??) that can have boot records on it. Hmm. OK after all of this long dissertation I understand the ISO now but why would NERO have me build a CDROM(ISO) that did not make the ISO bootable?
I have exactly the same problem with VM Server 2.2.0. I have downloaded the zip file a couple of times, burnt the cd using different computers and different cd-burning software, I have a pile of spoilt cd by my side, but the media check always fails.
The only difference is that, if I go on with the installation despite the media check failure, the software apparently is not properly installed. When I boot, I get the message "time went backwards", surrounded by a bunch of numbers, and then it all gets stuck.
It is the second time in a year that I try and fail to get started with Oracle VM. Maybe Oracle VM is only for experts. Well, I give up. I will go back to running Oracle on VMWare or Microsoft Virtual Server, which have always worked flawlessly for me.

Oracle Application Server Install Issue
Gurus,
There were 2 CD/DVDS (media) sent for the Oracle Application Server Install, but the Oracle Universal Installer did not ask for the 2nd CD while doing the Install, is this normal or I am not sure I missed any steps while installing the 1st CD/DVD.
I was waiting that it would ask for the IInd CD/DVD, But it never? but the Install looked clean and exited clean without any error.
Please advice.
Thanks
SheikThe 2nd disk is Companion CD. It contains the install files for other components.
For instance, If you want to install Oracle HTTP Server only, then you use the companion CD to do so. It has many other individual installations.

Oracle VM Server - install error - Graphical mode
Hi all!
I hope, you can help me the following problem.
I try to install an Oracle VM server to a FS server.
First, I tried the newest version - OVM S 2.2.1
In the begining Everything is allright.
But after I have to choose the keyboard, the next screen did not come up. Just a blue screen.
I went to the alt+F3 terminal, and I found a warning there:
WARNING Graphical mode is not avaible...Start text mode.
So the screen where I can partition the disk, did not come up..
I tried earlier version too - OVM server 2.1.5, but It is the same problem too.
Can somebody help me in this, what couse this problem, and how can I fix this, and install the O VM server?
Thx in advance!
Peter KokaiI purchased an Asus Sabertooth motherboard with an I7 4770 cpu and the Oracle VM server fails to detect the motherboard. I am seeing the same error that is posted in the Known Issues list with the Dell 380 Broadcom ethernet adapter.
Do I have a compatibility issue? The disk ISO was being given out at EMC World. I do not know how to tell what version it is.
I tried downloading the 3.2.2 version iso and it seems to have trouble with my USB devices, because my keyboard stops working and I can't select between media cd test or skip.
Are there any workarounds? Should I just wait for a future release? -
CPU flag vmx missing after Oracle VM Server install
Hi all,
I'd like to know if anyone have found this issue too.
A two weeks ago I installed Oracle VM Server on a Intel Core2Duo E8400 that have Virtualization feature and Enabled on BIOS, but when I installed OVM this feature dissapearing from /proc/cpuinfo, confused I started a Linux (Debian Lenny) fresh install, after installation "vmx" flags has found in /proc/cpuinfo.
Is there any solution to this issue? Because I can't create any Windows VM using HVM (iso files) or V2V (VirtualBox to Oracle VM).
I'll appreciate and others that have been passed this issue too.

New Oracle HTTP server install unable to host remote HTMLDB.
Hi all.
I installed the Oracle HTTP Server from the Oracle 10G Release 1 companion CD on a Mac Powerbook running the Tiger OS. I have a CentOS Linux server on my network with Oracle 10G R2 database running that I've installed HTMLDB 2.0 on. I can not seem to get the HTTP server to serve up a front end to my HTMLDB. I can connect and log into the Oracle Database from the MAC using SQLPlus using the HTMLDB_PUBLIC_USER account and password.

Oracle management server install/configure
i am running oracle 8.1.6 on linux 6.2.My enterprise manager is loaded on a win 98 platform.Whenever i want to connect to the server on linux for tuning and backup features the application ask's for the oracle management server .Could you tell me what is it and how to install/configure such a server
Oracle Enterprise Manager was designed for 3-tier architecture where:
tier 1 are your client tools, i.e. OEM consoles and DBA management packs
tier 2 is the middle tier which is the managment server with the repository(this is another database not managed through the OEM console.)
tier 3 are your nodes, i.e. the databases, listeners, and other services.
On another server, install oracle software, create a database with a minimum of a system tablespace and temporary tablespace.
From your OEM(Oracle Enterprise Manager) console on your Windows 98 platform, go to OEM configuration assistant, connect to the oracle database that you just created(see above) as system/manager. Create a new repository and select to create a new tablespace called OEM_REPOSITORY. The owner of this tablespace is preferably a person who is not a user on the system, just make someone up. Use your temporary tablespace for the temp and not the system tablespace. It will create the repository in your database.
Now, connect through the OEM console, the initial username is SYSMAN password OEM_TEMP. It will make you change the password for security reasons. You will have to discover the databases on all of your nodes(tier 3) in order to manage them. Don't try to manage your middle tier database that has your management server with OEM console.
Hope this helps,
Rob

Fresh install of Oracle VM Manager Template into Oracle VM Server
Hi,
I am trying to install the Oracle VM Manager template and then
create an Oracle VM Manager client.
I have already done a 'fresh install' of Oracle VM Server.
I do not have another machine available to use to contain the
'Oracle VM Manager', therefore, I am attempting to install the
Oracle VM Manager template directly into an Oracle VM Manager Server and
run the client.
I am following the instructions of the Oracle VM Server Users Guide
in section 4.3.
When I extract the zip file contents into the
/OVS/seed_pool directory, I get the following files.
Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz
So far, so good.
Next, I used 'tar' to help me extract the directories of the .tgz file.
So far, so good.
Next, as instructed, I used 'python' and 'print randomMAC()' to create a new MAC address.
Inside the /OVS/seed_pool/OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM/vm.cfg file
I modified the vif MAC address. I replaced the
xx:xx:xx with the 'last three' that were generated by the python randomMAC
function from above.
vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3E:<my generated numbers>', ]
So far, so good?
In the Oracle VM Server Users Guide in section 4.3.,
The next step, expains that I should run
xm create mv.cfg
I did this. When I ran this I received back the error.
Using config file "./vm.cfg"
Error disk is not accessible.
When I peek inside my vm.cfg file.
I see file references starting with the following
file:/OVS/running_pool/ ...
Of, course my running_pool directory is empty.
(Again, this is a fresh install of Oracle VM Server).
My first question is the following.
Sometime in this process was I supposed to run
the the following executable?
./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
If so, should I have done this early?
Was the modification of the vif (of adding the MAC address
into the vm.cfg file, something I 'should have not done'
or 'something that could be ignored' because the
'./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh' would have done this for me?
My second question is the following.
Would the following process be 'more correct?'
..1 Not modify the vm.cfg' file.
..2 run ./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh.
..3 In the /OVS/running_pool/ directory find my
vm.cfg file of interest, then modify the vif with a new MAC address.
..4 In /OVS/running_pool/Change my current location to my directory of interest
run xm create vm.cfg (to run my Oracle VM Manager)?
Any help or ideas whould be appreciated.
Thank you very much,

Template Version 2.3
Oracle VM Manager Version 2.2.0
This document contains:
1. Prerequisites for Oracle VM Manager virtual machine (VM) deployment
2. Oracle VM Manager Template description
3. Creating an Oracle VM Manager Virtual Machine from
Oracle VM Manager Template
4. Deployment Interview
5. Known Issues
For more information on Oracle VM Manager, please refer to
the "Oracle VM Manager Installation Guide" and the "Oracle VM Manager
User's Guide" available at:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/index.htm
1. Prerequisites
================
- A new install of Oracle VM Server 2.2 that has NOT been managed by another
Oracle VM Manager. Manager Template 2.2 is intended to be installed on Oracle
VM 2.2 server. If you have a new Oracle VM 2.1.5 server and want to deploy
Oracle VM Manager template, please use the Oracle VM 2.1.5 Manager template.
Note: root access to the server's dom0 is required.
- It's highly recommended that you upgrade the default agent (ovs-agent-2.3-19)
to ovs-agent-2.3-27 or later. You can get the latest Oracle VM 2.2 packages
from Oracle's Unbreakable Linux Network (http://linux.oracle.com).
Note: Alternate location to get Oracle VM agent 2.3-27 is
http://oss.oracle.com/oraclevm/server/2.2/RPMS/ovs-agent-2.3-27.noarch.rpm
- A working directory of the Oracle VM Server 2.2 has at least 4GB free space
for downloading and installing the template. The working directory can be any
directory on the Oracle VM server except /OVS/running_pool.
Note: The /root partition of the default Oracle VM server install may not have
enough space to temporarily host the template installation. Please use other
directory that has sufficient free space.
- At least 15GB of free space in the cluster root storage repository. For storage
and repository configuration, please refer to Oracle VM 2.2 Server User Guide:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15444/storage.htm
and
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15444/repository.htm
- At least 2GB of free memory on the Oracle VM Server
- A static IP address for the Oracle VM Manager
- If enabling HA (high availability) for the Oracle VM Manager,
mount a clustered OCFS2 or NFS filesystem on /OVS. If ext3 or a
local OCFS2 filesystem is used, enabling HA will cause the high availability
prerequisite checking to fail. The Oracle VM Manager configuration
process will exit without completing the configuration.
- The Oracle VM Manager will register the first VM that it detects.
To have Oracle VM Manager be the first VM registered,
make sure there are no virtual machine images besides the Oracle VM Manager
virtual machine in the /OVS/running_pool directory on the Oracle VM Server.
- A desktop or other system with a VNC Viewer installed
The steps below assume that the Oracle VM Server used is not currently
or was not previously managed by another Oracle VM Manager. If this is not
the case, the instructions below will ask user clean up Oracle VM Agent DB
before running the Oracle VM Manager.
2. Oracle VM Manager Template Description
=========================================
The Oracle VM Manager Template is distributed as one archive file which
includes:
File Version
OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz 2.3
Deploy_Manager_Template.sh 2.3
The OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz archive contains two disk images,
a VM configuration file and a readme file:
- Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 x86 system disk image
- Oracle VM Manager 2.2 disk image
- vm.cfg
- README
The system image is a JeOS (Just enough OS) installation of Oracle
Enterprise Linux 5.3. It is a smaller footprint install that contains
the only packages needed by Oracle VM Manager.
Oracle VM Manager is configured to use Oracle Database 10g
Express Edition (included).
Deploy_Manager_Template.sh is used to check the prerequisite and
create virtual machine.
During the first boot of the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine,
the Oracle VM Manager configuration process will create server pool
and import the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine.
Two OS user accounts are created by default:
user: root password: ovsroot
user: oracle password: oracle
The user 'oracle' belongs to the 'oinstall' and 'dba' groups.
The default vnc console password is 'oracle'
3. Creating the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine
=================================================
1) Download the Oracle VM Manager Template (V19215-01.zip)
from http://edelivery.oracle.com/oraclevm
2) Login to the Oracle VM Server's dom0 as 'root'
Copy V19215-01.zip to your working directory with at least 4GB free space.
You can choose any directory on OVM Server except /OVS/running_pool.
This zip file contains the archive file OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz
and a deploy script Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
3) As root, run
# unzip V19215-01.zip
4) As 'root', run the deployment script:
# chmod 755 Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
# ./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
The deployment script Deploy_Manager_Template.sh will complete the following
tasks:
a) prerequisite checking
b) uncompress OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz file to directory
/OVS/running_pool. This directory will contain the files following files:
/OVS/running_pool/OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM
|- System.img (OS image file)
|- Manager.img (Manager image file)
|- vm.cfg (VM configuration file)
|- README (Readme file)
c) generate and assign new MAC address to the virtual machine
d) interview the user for VM and VM Manager configuration parameters
(next section 'Deployment interview' provides the list of questions)
e) create and boot the virtual machine from the Oracle VM Server
command line
f) display the access information for Oracle VM Manager and Oracle VM
Manager VM
4. Deployment Interview
=======================
The deployment script will prompt a user to enter
a) Agent password
The agent password is required for the prerequisites check.
b) Storage configuration
Storage Source: NFS address, OCFS2 partition path
The script will automatically detect your cluster root storage repository
if you have configured it. Or it prompts users to input their storage source
and the script tries to set it up as cluster root.
NOTE: how to manually create your own storage repository in OracleVM server 2.2.x
1) Register your storage source. Example:
/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -n myhost:/mynfslocation
/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -n /dev/sdb3
Note that the storage source should have at least 15GB free space.
If the storage source is successfully registered, note down the uuid genereated
by the command above, such as:
51d4c69b-e439-41ac-8b31-3cc485c993b0 => /dev/sdb3
2) Mount your storage repository.
If the agent version is 2.3-27 or higher, execute:
/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -i
otherwise, complete the following commands:
[1] mkdir -p /var/ovs/mount/$(echo <uuid> | sed s/-//g | tr '[:lower:]' \
'[:upper:]')"
where '<uuid>' is the uuid noted down in step 2)
[2] mount your storage source to the directory made in step [1].
3) If /OVS exists, delete or move /OVS
mv /OVS "/OVS.$(date '+%Y%m%d-%H%M%S').orig"
create a symbolic link from storage repository to /OVS
ln -nsf /var/ovs/mount/<UUID>/ /OVS
c) Network configuration
Static IP address
Netmask
Default Gateway IP address
DNS Server IP address
Hostname
d) Password for database accounts:
'SYS' and 'SYSTEM' (the same password the same password is used)
'OVS'
'oc4jadmin'
'admin'
e) Web Service configuration (supported in template in version 1.2)
Web Service password (at least 6 characters)
Enable HTTPS or not
f) SMTP server (outgoing mail server SMTP hostname)
E-mail Address for account 'admin'
g) Data for the manager services configuration:
Oracle VM Server Pool Name
Oracle VM Server login user name
Oracle VM Server login password
Note that Oracle VM Manager is critical for managing Oracle VM Server Pools.
Do not pause, suspend or shutdown this virtual machine! Configuring
HA is recommended for this virtual machine so that Oracle VM will
automatically restart the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine if there
is a server crash.
5. Known Issues
===============
1) You may see messages on a virtual machine's console similar to these
when the virtual machine is booting up:
Fatal: No PCI config space access function found
rtc: IRQ 8 is not free.
i8042.c: No controller found.
These messages can be ignored.
2) Mail server check fails.
Bug #7140 in bugzilla.oracle.com
Oracle VM Manager installer only checks the default SMTP port 25 for the
mail server. If the SMTP port is not 25, the check fails, and you will
see the following message:
Mail server '<mail server hostname>' check failed, want to re-enter it(Y|n)?
You can enter 'n' to skip the mail server checking. You will also see the
send mail checking fails with following message:
Failed to send mail to '<Admin e-mail address>'
want to re-enter the e-mail address(Y|n)?
You can enter 'n' to skip the send mail checking.
3) OEL VM console may display error messages similar to those below:
BUG: warning at drivers/xen/fbfront/xenfb.c:143/xenfb_update_screen() (Not
tainted)
Call Trace:
[<ffffffff803aa461>] xenfb_thread+0x135/0x2c5

[<ffffffff802338ca>] kthread+0x0/0x132
[<ffffffff80260b1a>] child_rip+0x0/0x12
This will not cause any problems.
4) If you accidentally power off Oracle VM Manager virtual machine through
Oracle Manager UI, and restart the virtual machine from OVM server command
line, although Oracle VM Manager virtual machine is running normally,
the virtual machine status in Manager UI will stay in 'Shutting Down'.
This is expected, as the virtual machine status sync will only happen when
the virtual machine status is "Error" or "Powered Off".
To re-sync the virtual machine status, please complete the following steps:
1. Log on the Manager UI;
2. Navigate to the 'Virtual Machines' tab;
3. Select Oracle VM Manager virtual machine, "OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM";
4. Choose 'Reset' from 'More Actions' dropdown list;
5. Click 'Go' button, the status will become "Running" after a while.
5) (Bug 9191053) For OVS agent version 2.3-19, the following High
Availability scenario will not work.
"If a Virtual Machine Server fails, all running virtual machines are
restarted automatically on another available Virtual Machine Server."
For OVS agent 2.3-19, Oracle VM Manager virtual machine will not be
automatically restarted on any other available Virtual Machine Server,
but on the original Virtual Machine Server when it becomes available again.
To fix the issue, please upgrade OVS agent to 2.3-27 or the latest version. -
How to install Oracle VM Server 2.2.0 as 32-bit mode on a 64-bit machine.
Gurus,
If I am not wrong, the Oracle VM Server 2.2.0 installer for 32-bit and 64-bit are the same file.
I have AMD 64 bit machine, when I install Oracle VM Server 2.2.0, it installs as 64-bit.
However due to requirement, I want to install Oracle VM Server in 32-bit mode.
Will appreciate the steps.
Regards,
KrishnaKrishna,
Please note that the zip file from the Oracle eDelivery/Linux site contains a single Oracle VM server ISO file; this file is used for both x86 and x86-64 hardware. The Oracle VM server install routine automatically detects the hardware platform and installs the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit Xen hypervisor. Regardless of the hardware platform, 32-bit or 64-bit, dom0 is 32-bit. Will a 32bit dom0 meet your business requirements?
Could you please let us know the business requirements re 32bit?
For details about the installation, sizing and server resource requirements please review http://itnewscast.com/chapter-4-oracle-vm-server-sizing-installation-and-updates

Install Oracle HTTP Server to Oracle Database XE
Successfully managed to install Oracle Database XE to Windows 2000 (after temporarily dropping TNSNAMES and TNS_ADMIN variables). I want to learn how to use Application Express (formerly HTML DB) and it would be a pain/take ages to get the enterprise DBA's to install it onto a supported networked instance. I have installed HTML DB into Oracle XE but the post installation instructions require that Oracle HTTP Server is installed. How do you get Oracle HTTP Server installed into Oracle XE? Oracle Universal Installer does not recognise Oracle XE as an Oracle Home. How do you use Oracle Universal Installer on Oracle XE? or how do you download Oracle HTTP Server with InstallShield? Seems strange that Oracle XE does not integrate with other toolset installations.
ThanksALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA = FLOWS_020000;
exec FLOWS_020000.wwv_flow_upgrade.switch_schemas ('FLOWS_020000','FLOWS_020100');commit;I would give it a try, it's hard to make it worse ;).
Oracle XE / Apex is almost the same.
Some of the differences are:
- SSO authentication is not supported out of the box (although there are workarounds)
- You can assign only a single database schema to a workspace
- There are no developer accounts in the workspaces
Basically, both version are pretty much the same. You can export / import applications both ways.
I cannot see what you mean by missing templates. They are all there (although not in the filesystem but stored in the database via XMLDB).
You can reach the documentation from the homepage of XE and also from Start > Programs > Oracle Express Edition

Error in Jdev with connection to Oracle Content Server
Hi,
I have installed my Oracle Content server on a remote linux machine and using Apache webserver with it.
I am using Jdev drop 8 build 2d and creating an application trying to connect to the Content server creating a Content repository connection of repository type 'Oracle Content Server' and it tests successfully. I use this connection on my jspx page with Document Library.
The jspx runs properly using the connection .
But after this if I try to work with the connection object ,say use it on anoither page, it shows loading but does nothing further. If I go to the connection properties and test again it fails with message 'Test failed : null' and gives an error message as below while closing the properties window:

How to create connection to cluster of Oracle database server?
Hi, all!
I have to create connection to Oracle cluster. How to do that?
I can make a connection to one server but to cluster ....
I saw many documents but without any result.Hello
Two servers with oracle database server installed organized as a cluster.
Both server work in parallel, when one of them stop work the other takes connection automaticaly.
The connection to the cluster is not usual as a one server.
I have to specify both servers.Any time i can make a connection to one of them but when he stop work my connection will be broken.
Because of that the servers work under oracle server software.
So i can make a connection to one of them and both.
This is made because it is for production firm with many test computers that work 24/7 and send information to this oracle server.
So i have to make a connection to the general oracle cluster (the two servers simultaneously).
I saw some connection strings to do tha written on Visual Basic but i have no idea how to do that in C/C++.
There is no information about that in the Oracle tutorials and manuals.
I need this explanation because i make a connection without TNS config file.
Can you help me?
I will be very appreciated. -

Oracle 9i Server : Job Scheduling not working as expected on Windos XP
Hi
I have a oracle 9i on my system. The underline OS for the system is
Windows XP.
I am trying to execute a oracle job on the oracle server but it seems
it is not getting executed. The same job if I am placing on a oracle
9i server installed on a Linux based OS, then I am getting the
expected outcome from it.
Can you please let me know, what should I do to get it executed on
Windos XP system.
One more thing, while installing the Oracle 9i, I had seen numerous
options but not very sure @ which one is used for what functionality.
It would be a greatful if you can send me some docs ( presentations
would be the best ) to understand the componenets.
We are also facing some problem while creating a new service.
What steps needs to be followed for the same.
Thanks and Regards,

How to reach an Oracle BI Server (client 1) from another client (client 2)
Hi all, I'm new to the BI EE's world and I have a connection's problem.
I have installed Oracle BI EE 10.1.3.3.2 (Complete installation - all component) & Oracle 10g DB on my pc (pc 1). The BI server is started.
..and then another colleague of mine installed only Oracle BI EE 10.1.3.3.2 (Oracle Business Intelligence Client Tools) on her pc (pc 2).
Now, from the pc2, with Oracle BI Administration Tool we want to have access to the Oracle BI Server installed on the pc1.
Now, my question is this:
Which steps I have to follow in order to open a repository located on the pc1 with Oracle BI Administration Tool located on pc2 ? I know we have to modify the NQSConfig.INI file...but HOW ?
Any helps will be appreciated
AlexHi,
If you want to open the rpd in offline mode, just open the .rpd file sharing the server's folder. In online mode you need to create an odbc to the server, in System DSN, choose the OBI EE driver, port, login etc, when you click in the open online icon, you will be able to choose the ODBC.
Regards.
