Oracle Web Cache - Load Balancer Mode

Hello,
I am facing a problem related to fault tolerance in Oracle Web Cache
My environment:
2 Nodes of Oracle Application Server 10.1.3 configured in cluster.
have configured Oracle Web Cache (in LoadBalancer mode only) to simulate a BigIP load balancing above these two oc4j node. This to be used as fault tolerance so if one http request will fail the LoadBalancer will direct it to the second oc4j (its http server).
I have used the defaults recommended by Oracle documentation for configuration clustering load balancer using Oracle Web Cache and using JSESSIONID for Session binding with oc4j-type. I left all other cluster/server setting to default
Problem:
The problem is when I am shutting down one oc4j instance the Oracle Web Cache tries to keep the session with the un-available oc4j node and not direct the session to the other oc4j node.
If I choose to start a new session (loose current work) than it does work with the second (alive) oc4j node, but than where is its fault tolerance??
What do i need to do to keep working with the same session over the second oc4j node. My deployed Web App is enabled to work in cluster, using Oracle Application Server console. Here is its orion-application.xml

Will appreciate any help !

is OHS/apache deployed between web cache and your OC4J? if so, i think since OHS/apache is alive to web cache, web cache keeps routing to it.
maybe in your script, you can shutdown both OHS/apache and OC4J totgether so web cache can correctly route.

  • Web cache load balancing web forms - Urgent

    Hi,
I have two servers(server 1 and server 2) with BI(forms and reports) installation. Infrastructure is running on another unix server( server 3).
I can access forms application on server A and server B using URL :
    http://server1.gnb.ca:7778/forms90/f90servlet?config=test
    http://server2.gnb.ca:7778/forms90/f90servlet?config=test
Web cache is installed on both server 1 and server 2.
I want to load balance forms applications using web cache.I looked in metalink and i din't find a detailed document to do this.
specially i am not clear on What parameters / how to setup
    1) site information for application
    2) origin server
    3) site to server mapping
I am following doc # 229900.1 from metalink. If someone can give steps to do this is appreciated.
    Thanks

Hi, I can't exactly answer this as am not aware of Forms. But, as such, Web Cache does a good load balancing work provided you configure it well. Probably, you should try posting this in Forms forum too.

  • Problem in using OracleAS Web Cache as Load Balancer

    I have two machines:
    aimssrv.world.com and aimsrep.world.com.
Both of above machines are running Redhat Linux AS 4.
On both machines, I have installed Oracle Forms and Reports 10g Services. I have deployed my application on both machines.
I am able to access my application at aimssrv.world.com by doing:
    http://aimssrv.world.com:7778/forms/frmservlet?config=aims
and I am also able to access my application at aimsrep.world.com by doing:
    http://aimsrep.world.com:7778/forms/frmservlet?config=aims
I have implemented OracleAS Web Cache at machine aimssrv.world.com, and have enabled the Load Balancing.
In Origin Servers, its showing me two servers:
    Host => aimssrv.world.com, PORT=> 7778, Routing=> Enabled, CAPACITY=>100, Failover Threshold=>5, PING URL=>/, PROTOCOL=>HTTP
    Host => aimsrep.world.com, PORT=> 7778, Routing=> Enabled, CAPACITY=>100, Failover Threshold=>5, PING URL=>/, PROTOCOL=>HTTP
In Site Definition, I have following information:
    Host Name=> aimssrv.world.com, PORT=>7777
In site-to-server mapping, I have following information:
Priority      Host Name      Port      ESI Content Policy      Host Name      Port      Proxy
    1      aimssrv.world.com      7777      Unrestricted      aimssrv.world.com      7778      No
    aimsrep.world.com      7778                                    No
    2      *      7777           Exclude Fragments      aimssrv.world.com      7778      No
    3      *      *           Exclude Fragments      aimssrv.world.com      7778      No
In Session Binding, I have selected "JSESSIONID" as session, and "OC4J-based" as session binding mechanism.
Now please guide me as how would I run my application by using the OracleAS Web Cache?
    What would be the URL?
Do I need to make any changes in httpd.conf files of aimssrv.world.com and aimsrep.awc.com?
    Please guide.
    Thanks and regards

    hi,
i hv recently configured webcache load-balancing for my 2 mid-tiers.I did not upgrade pre-requisite webcache upgrade patch 4569559 to my 10g rel 2 10.1.2.0.2 OAS and it still worked a bit but I do have some doubts why oracle recommends installing this patch before configuring webcache load-balancing.Have u?
btw u need to collapse all the features of webcache of caching to turn on http load-balancing.U need to add a parameter to internal.xml (LOADBALANCE ON="YES") and register origin servers of both servers with each other and map ur sites so that origin servers of both servers will cater sites of server1 and server2 at the same time.
what worked for me is i registered origin server of server1 at server2 and origin server of server2 at server1 and mapped site of server1 (http://server1:port/forms/frmservlet?config=something) to work with origin server of server2 as well at site-to-server page so that origin servers of both servers will load-balance my server1 site and vice-versa.
But still its not seamless. The initial site request was still being routed to the server which is DOWN first and not seamlessly routed to other server which is UP.Maybe webcache upgrade patch would hv done this seamlessly????

  • Forms6i Server (9iAS R1.x) loadbalancing using Oracle Web Cache

    Hello,
I have read that it's possible to use Oracle Web Cache as a software load balancer between multiple Application Servers.
We are running Oracle9iAS R1.0.2.2.2a, with Forms/Reports6i servers on 2 Win2k boxes i.e our Forms6i application is deployed on two seperate boxes in two distinct locations. Users at each location, use their respective App Server url.
Since the application is the same i.e. Forms6i code/fmx is the same for both locations, I am looking into loadbalancing and failover capability that Web Cache might be able to provide.
So basically all users from both locations will point their browser to this Web Cache and the Web Cache will direct each connection to either of the two boxes. So, if either of the boxes dies, Web Cache will divert the requests to the other box.
My concern is whether Web Cache supports this for the Forms requests that it will receive from the users. We are using Servlet Deployment of Forms.
Has anyone done this or has any ideas as to whether it's going to work or not?
    Thanks,
    Manish

    Manish,
we tested this but came across problem with Webcache that have to do with the jsession Forms uses. This is fixed for Oracle9iAS 9.0.2.x. So if you want to run Forms with Webcache in front, then please do this using the latest version of Oracle9iAS V2 Webcache. For Oracle9iAS V1 and Forms Services we recommend not to use Webcache but do the load balancing via JServ.

  • Oracle Applications 11i Load Balancing does not work with RAC one Node

    Hi all,
Could you help me to resolve this issue.
    Architecture environment is :
    - One APPS tier node
    - Two nodes Oracle Database Appliance (Primary node 1 holds INSTANCE_1 et Secondary node is configurured to holds INSTANCE_2), i.e RAC one Node.
    - The primary node have instance_name SIGM_1 and the secondary node have instance_name SIGM_2, but in RAC one node, the secondary instance is not alive.
We convert our EBS 11i environment to RAC following note ID Using Oracle 11g Release 2 Real Application Clusters with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i [ID 823586.1].
When testing Database failover, Oracle Applications 11i load balancing does not work anymore.
The root cause is that, when the primary node of the Rac one node is down, the INSTANCE_NAME_1 is automaically relocating to the surviving node,.
During test failover, we imagine that when the primary node goes down, the secondary node start or relocate database with instance_name SIGM_2, and in that case the Oracle Applications load balancing works.
Currently, when the primary node goes down, the instance_name SIGM_1 is relocated on the secondary node, which cause failure of Oracle Applications Load Balancing.
    Thank you for your advice.

This is something I observed a long time ago for Safari (ie: around version 1). I'm not sure this is Safari, per se, but OpenSSL that is responsible for the behavior. I'm pretty sure Chrome does this and I've seen some Linux browsers do it.
What I have done at the last two companies I've worked for is recommend that our clients do not use SSL SessionID as the way of tracking sticky sessions on web servers, but instead using IP address. This works in nearly all cases and has few downsides. The other solution is to use some sort of session sharing on your web servers to mitigate the issue (which also means that your web servers aren't a point of failure for your users' sessions). (One of the products I supported had no session information stored on the web servers, so we could safely round-robin requests, the other product could be implemented with a Session State Server... but in most cases we just used IP address to load balance with). The other solution is to configure your load balancer to terminate the SSL tunnel. You get some other benefits from this, such as allowing your load balancer to reduce the number of actual connections to the web servers. I've seen many devices setup this way.
One thing to consider through this is that - due to the way internet standards work - this really can't be termed a bug on anyone's part. There is no guarantee in the SSL/TLS standards that a client will return the same SSL Session ID for each request and there is not requirement that subsequent requests will even use the same tunnel. Remember, HTTP is a stateless protocol. Each request is considered a new request by the web server and everything else is just trickery to try and get it to work the way you want. You can be annoyed at Safari's behavior, but it's been this way for over 5 years by my count, so I don't expect it to change.

  • ADF application integrating with Oracle Web Cache

    Hello,
I am trying to integrated my ADF 11g application with Oracle Web Cache. I used this link http://andrejusb.blogspot.com/2010/06/oracle-webtier-11g-configuration-for.html for it.
I am able to access my ADF application using webcache port 7785.
I created few caching rules in the Oracle Web Cache. And in the popular request section of the Oracle Web cache i see jpg,png and other image files cached.
But the issue is when the application access images like /testapp/test/images/abc.jpg?_adf.ctrl-state=5b0s7lzfo_29 . I created a caching rule with regular expression ^/testapp/test/images/[A-Za-z0-9_]*\.(gif|jpeg|png|jpg)\?_adf\.ctrl-state=[A-Za-z0-9_]*$.
But when i access the popular request in em i don't see the URL given above as cached. The caching reason it specifies as URL contains query string.
I am not sure if i need to do anything additional to cache these URL's as well.
    Thanks!
    Ram

Yes that works. But my question is how to cache the urls which has querystring. I was trying to give a regular expression to match the url so that the url which contains parameters like _afrLoop which changes with each HTTP request can also be cached.

  • Dynamic LBFO Load Balancing mode causing issues

    Hi,
We`re running a couple of virtual machines with the
    BIG-IP Virtual Edition in a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.
These virtual machines have had problems where traffic sent through the virtual machines doesn`t get through due to the MAC Addresses of the physical team NICs being replaced with the Mac Address from the team member actually used to transmit the
    packet.
    Reference:
Windows Server 2012 R2 NIC Teaming (LBFO) Deployment and Management
Blog post - Server 2012 Hyper-V / NIC Team Oddity
One of the comments in the blog-post states what we are seeing:
The reason for the MAC Address switching you’re seeing is that Server 2012 in some cases will replace the source MAC address on Ethernet frames with the MAC Address from the team member actually used to transmit the packet. The reason for this is that
if it always kept the MAC Address intact, the switch would throw alarms for “MAC flapping”, i.e. seeing a given MAC Address bouncing back and forth between switch ports.
When we changed the Load Balancing mode from Dynamic to Hyper-V port, the problem was resolved.
Is it possible to solve this problem while still using Dynamic as the Load Balancing mode? Would LACP instead of Switch independent teaming mode solve the problem?

@Rob Thanks, that`s useful information. Did they suggest any other solutions/workarounds? (such as LACP)
@Alex I understand that I need to configure my switches if I`m going to use LACP, but will LACP cause a different behaviour regarding the replacement of the source MAC address on Ethernet frames? In other words: Will LACP be an alternate solution/workaround
to using Hyper-V Port in Switch Independent mode?
I can't answer this from experience because I've never had this problem.
But, the basic issue with the switch-independent mode is that the physical switch is completely unaware that there is any team situation at all. It can only operate within the base rules of Ethernet, which say that a MAC address can only appear on one endpoint
at a time. So, if you have built a switch-independent team that crosses 4 physical adapters and a Hyper-V virtual switch on top of that, what the physical switch "sees" is four distinct endpoints that are hosting multiple MAC addresses. When one
of the virtual adapters transmits on a virtual switch, it could, depending on the load-balancing mode, use any of the four physical lines. If it uses the same source MAC address while communicating across all four lines, the switch might panic. It wants to
know where the MAC really is for purposes of knowing where to deliver its inbound packets, and depending on security configuration, to be sure that there's not an unauthorized spoofing attempt in progress. That's why the dynamic mode uses MAC substitution.
The Hyper-V port mode gets around this by locking each virtual adapter on to a single physical channel so that its MAC address doesn't move. This has a cost of not allowing traffic on any given virtual adapter to be load-balanced.
In a LACP connection, the physical switch is fully aware of the team, and furthermore, it knows that it's not an endpoint. All the MAC addresses of the virtual adapters are associated with this single aggregated tunnel, not the individual physical adapters.
When it comes down to deciding which of the physical adapters to use to carry any given transmission, that can be negotiated by the switches without the need to lock a MAC to a specific adapter. There isn't, or at least there shouldn't be, any need for the
dynamic mode to perform MAC substitution.
Again, I'm speaking from theory, not direct experience with what you're asking about. I do make regular use of the dynamic mode on LACP trunks, but I don't run any applications that would have this MAC sensitivity issue. For all I know, dynamic still performs
this substitution and I just don't understand why. Also, there's a chance your symptoms just happen to point to this substitution as being a problem. But, I would say there's a good chance that using Dynamic/LACP will solve your issue.

  • Oracle Portal with Oracle Web Cache

How can I configure Oracle Portal (or Web Cache) to work together?
I have installed and started both of them. Now, Web Cache works fine with standard html pages (for example Apache docs) but after trying to reach portal the url is redirected to standard port - on which Portal runs (Web Cache works on 1100 and Portal on 7778).
So it seems that portal pages are not cached.
    Web Cache:

Where can I find any information about that?
    best regards

Portal PM, I thought you said that this solution would not work. Everyone I have heard so far has said that you cannot configure webcache to work with Portal documents. Does this work or does it not?
Read the messages below from the bottom up.
It's not possible to do that today.
In 9.0.2 (the next release) we will be using WebCache configured out of the box so you won;t need to, however, till then you cannot use webcache with Portal 3.0.x
    Thanks

  • Database Native web services - load balancing,  Instrumentation , security

    Hello –
I’m proposing use of Database Native web service in our company. Our architects are asking following questions so appreciate your help
    a.     How do you load balance across the DB WS (is there a way to use the F5 to detect downtime and balance the load across the DB servers)? We will be using RAC configuration with 3 nodes.
    b.     Our architect have security concern as user id/password information are in the web service URL, which may prove to be an issue. Is there a way to mitigate this risk?
    c.     Instrumentation in this approach (db native services) is questionable due to development/auto gen of the service logic from the DB itself. We may investigate wrapping the services with OSB to give us an additional instrumentation, policy enforcement, endpoint mediation and security proxy. Thoughts??
    d.     Architect are curious regarding any potential performance issues this may have on the DB server.
    Thanks

    Hi
We've recently begun using Native Web Services, intending to roll out this approach across the enterprise, but we've encountered 2 significant problems so far, which you may want to consider before proceeding ...
    1. NWS returns an exception if the underlying PL/SQL returns a null value - even if the PL/SQL has completed successfully, and null is a legitimate return value (see SR 3-6201969101 - it contains simple instructions to recreate the problem)
(I raised it in this forum but there were no replies - SOAP Fault when returning null from a Native Web Service Stored Procedure
    2. The sequence of values returned in the NWS response message is the opposite to the sequence declared in the auto-generated wsdl - i.e. schema validation will fail (see SR 3-6209016991 - it also contains simple instructions to replicate)
We have coded a workaround for problem 1. where we return <EMPTY> in place of null, and check for it in the client, but without proper resolution we're not prepared to use NWS elsewhere
As a workaround for problem 2. we removed schema validation, again not ideal
Both SRs were escalated 9 days ago, but are still outstanding
Incidentally our database is 11.2.0.1, but I've tested on 11.2.0.3 and both problems are still present
We also wrap the NWS services using an OSB Proxy Service, and came across the same security issue that you describe (b) - to provide the credentials required for the NWS, simply create a Service Account (containing the credentials) inside OSB and attach it to the Business Service which invokes the NWS (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17904_01/doc.1111/e15867/service_accounts.htm)

    Hi  Ram ,
For  troubleshooting your issue, please take steps as below:
Just about any load balancing solution will work, including a server that runs the Web Server (IIS) role running Application Request Routing (ARR):Install
    Application Request Routing
Install the certificate on the load balancer as described under Securing Office Web Apps Server communications by using
    HTTPS.
Make sure you have configured the cluster correctly for full internet name:
