Oracle XE Functionality Question

Hello,
I am here trying to get the opinion of Oracle XE users regarding a project I am considering.
Currently, my employer uses Access databases, with the master on a corporate server, and 4 slaves on local servers at warehouses. At each warehouse, there are probably 10-30 new records created per day by 2 or 3 users at each location, which get synced to the main at the end of each day. Any changes that need to be made at the corporate level get synced and sent on to the warehouse as needed.
Besides sending out these changes, the corporate office will also add 40-50 records per day. Information is also pulled for reports- seemingly pretty normal Access tasks. I don't know the exact stats, but each backed up copy of the DB is less than 100mb, so it's not a huge system. (It's for keeping track of inbound and outbound shipments, carriers, locations, etc.) There are probably 6 users at this location.
So the question I have is, would XE have the functionality to at least cover these tasks, and possibly more. (What more is at the moment, I do not know.) My own preference would be to grow into Oracle DB, but if the Access functions cannot be replicated, we would probably move on to something else, so I thought I'd ask for current user experience.
Thanks for your time.

Hi,
I think application running on XE and Apex suits for your current situation perfectly.
And if system gets bigger you can get license of "full" Oracle database and upgrade.
Using single database server and web application everything is "online" and you do not need transfer any data end of day.
XE 10G database comes with Apex 2.1. That Apex version is quite old.
But you can upgrade Apex to latest one.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/overview/index.html
There is coming XE 11G that ship latest Apex and features that 10G do not have.
You can also save more user data to XE 11G. But I assume XE 10G 4GB limit is enough for you.

I did find this blog that is actually running on XE and Apex
http://www.apexninjas.com/blog/f?p=100:1:1421570076381594::::P1_ARTICLE:
I think you can not run blog application on MS Access =)
Also I think Oracle database have much more features than Access, specially with Apex.

  • Oracle Financials Functional Situational Interview Questions

    Hello Oracle Fin Brothers,
    For Oracle Financial Functional Consultant
I am new in Oracle Financials, Just completed my training and I am having my first interview Thursday; the recruiter tell me the first step will be Situational Interview and I really don't understand what this mean; can some one tell me exactly how is an Situational Interview in Oracle Financial Functional? what are the possible questions and answers? did some one have a list of situational interview questions and answer to help me with? I will really appreciated.
The second step will be Skill interview; what is the difference with situational interview? what are the possible questions and answers? can some one provide a list of possible questions and answers? for Oracle Functional consultant?
Hope to get some helpful post
    Thanks
    Ferrari

    Hi,
I can tell you about my experience in different process.
I usually have a first interview with the recruiter/agency this first interview is quite general, he usually review your CV, job history,... the recruiter ask you about your interest or motivation for that process, if you are willing to travel, reallocate, etc.. your salary expectations and your knowledge in the different modules. This is the easier interview and if everything is ok, the recruiter will tell you for next steps, probably about the project, the employer, etc...
In the second interview normally is with the consultancy company, with the manager and an experience consultant that usually asks about technical questions, they ask for example, how to setup a dual accounting process with SLA in GL, which reports you would use to reconcille AP/AR and GL, how many segments do you need to setup in GL for a specific business situation, how to load assest in FA, which are de accounting steps from buy goods until you account the AP invoices,...
In some cases you have also a final interview with customer just to get the final approval, but the really important one is the second interview.
    Good Luck ;-)

  • Oracle Spatial functionality with WFS

    Hi all
My first post here so be gentle on me ;-)
This may be an obvious question but here goes ...
When using a WFS client can you access the full SDO_... SQL functions within Oracle Spatial? I've had a read of the WFS spec and it is all a bit vague on how the queries get passed through to the data store.
Also with the WFS locking, is this done at the web server level? If so how would that impact on any direct access to the database? A bit dangerous??
Appreciate any advice on WFS implemtations with a 9i back end. I want to retain the full native Oracle functionality and still deploy via WFS ... a pipe dream??
    Thanks
    Richard

    Thanks for your response Andreas
Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear, I realise the WFS client will never directly access the data source, that it is the WFS server that makes the request to the data store, not the client, but can the call be passed through to Oracle as native SQL?
I think I found the answer in the OGC Filter Encoding Imp Spec where it desribes in great detail the optional filter component of a WFS request. It desribes the CQL filter operators that include some spatial operators. These could, I understand, be translated from CGL and Feature based schema to SQL (in GML?) and relational based schema.
While I don't think at first glance that the spatial operators in CQL match all the Oracle SDO_ functions they probably go far enough for most normal users.
Am I on the right track?
Does anyone know of any work that has been done in this filter translation to SQL and if it has been implemented successfully anywhere.
I think the locks would still pose a problem, but that's for another day :-)
    Thanks
    Richard

  • Oracle Apps Functional in Finance Career

    Hi all
I would be thankful to you if anyone can guide me in pursuing a career in Oracle applications functional in finance. For your information here is my career background - I did BSc(Computer Science), MBA & MSc and presently I am working as an Accounts Assistant in a comapny based in Scotland.
I am going on holidays to Hyderabad, India. I need to know what will be the best way to learn the above course, in an institute or under a personal instructor. Please suggest
All your suggestions will be kindly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Imran,
Personally, I would recommend Oracle University training over any other personal training. Oracle provides a “100% Student Satisfaction” which means if you are not satisfied with your learning experience you can request a free retake of the same class title within 90 days & within 50 miles of their original class.

I believe the best way to learn is to have your own vision demo instance and start reading Oracle documentation. In addition, Oracle blogs and Metalink are also good source of information. I must also admit that I have learned a lot through this forum, so you can go through old threads and read about others experiences. You can also post your question and will definitely get an answer.

  • OIC: Functional Question(11.5.10)

    Hi All,
I would like to know answer for the following functional question in Oracle 11.5.10 Incentive Compensation Application(OIC). I would greatly appreciate if you anyone can reply for this.
    1. Question on Foreign currency exchange rates:
We know that OIC cannot handle foreign currency exchange rates. Since all of our offer letters to the Sales guys are in local currency what we end up doing is picking an exchange rate on July 1st every year and converting them to US $. What I’m wondering is why couldn’t we just set them up in OIC in their local currency, without converting them?
Is that possible? OIC can handle this?
    2. In OIC, Can I enter a DUMMY Acoount Executive (since we are not going to credit any single person in the Primary Account Executive role) that bookings could be credited to in order to ensure they roll up to the appropriate manager?
    a) Is that possible?
    b) Does this DUMMY Acoount Executive should be part of the HR Employee setups as well?, In OIC should we need to load the transaction for DUMMY Account
Executive so that credit will get rolled up to approriate managers based on the Group hiearchy setups?
    Thanks,

    Yes

You do not need to set up the dummy resource as employee. All you need is to create as OTHER type of resource and add that resource to group.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • How to Oracle Database Function in OBIEE Administration Tool

    Hi All,
I want to use a Oracle Database Function in as a column in OBIEE (BM, Presentation Model). Can anybody has done this inOBIEE. Any pointers to this is much appreicated.
    Thanks,

    Hi user7417334,
You cannot use any formulas in the presentation layer (not that I know of). But you can definitely use oracle database functions in the BMM layer.
You want to use the EVALUATE function. It works like this:
    e.x. EVALUATE( 'TO_DATE(%1,%2)' AS DATE, '12/31/2009', 'MM/DD/YYYY')
    Generic Version: EVALUATE( '<FUNC>' AS <DATATYPE>, VALUE1,VALUE2,etc)
FUNC) Is the syntax for the function you are calling. Any parameters have to be replaced by %<number>, where number refers to the order in which you specify your parameters.
DATATYPE) The datatype that the function will evaluate to. In this case, DATE.
VALUE1) The latter part of the formula is a comma separated list of all the parameters used in the function. In this case, it's the date I want to cast
VALUE2) This is the second parameter. You need as many as you referenced in your function. In this case, it's the date format.
Good luck and if you found this post useful, please award points!
    best regards,
    -Joe

  • Using of Oracle Text functions not working in JDev

    Hi,
I'm confused about using Oracle Text functions in JDeveloper.
It's not possible for me to pass the sql syntax test while creating a view object with a custom query:
    SELECT score (1) myScore,
    dokumente.titel,
    ctx_doc.snippet ('idx_dokumente_titel',
    TO_CHAR (dokumente.dkt_id),
    'searchstring'
    ) snippet
    FROM dokumente
    WHERE contains (titel, 'searchstring', 1) > 0;
I retrieve "ORA-00911:     invalid character" for the contains-function.
(Using this statement in sql-worksheet works.)
    Any ideas?

  • Oracle stored functions and where clauses

    Hello everybody,
I need to call an Oracle stored function and at the same time do a select on
the result of the query, it works well except when I use a where clause. I
am connecting to Oracle 8.1.7 through OLEDB using the Oracle provider for
OLEDB distributed with this Oracle version.
Here is the query I am doing:
    select * from {call MC.SEC.QryTermbases(?, ?) where ID = ?}
If I remove the where clause it works well but I need to use the where. I
know that I could pass the parameter to the procedure instead of doing that
in the select but there are places where I can not do that since the SQL
query is generated dynamically. The code above is just a demo.
Thanks very much for your help,
    Jose.

Thanks for answering, it is actually possible to do a select on the return of a function, I have tested it with other than "select *" and it has worked well. What has not worked for me is using a "where" clause. That is "select" without "where" has worked but not with the "where".
I also suspect that it does not work but similar queries work well in MSSQL 2000 and Interbase 6.0 so I thought may be there was a way to do that with Oracle. That is in MSSQL I can treat the result of a function as a normal table and I can do the same thing with a stored procedure that returns a recordset in Interbase.
    Thanks again for answering,
    Jose.
