Oracle XE Not Shutting Down Cleanly
Hello all.
I've installed an Oracle XE on an Oracle EL 5.5.
Everything looks fine, except for the shutdown script. It does startup nicely with system starts, but if I shutdown the OS, the database just crashes, instead of shutting down cleanly.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

VB Process Does Not Shut Down After Attaching VM
I am using the axbridge with Java 1.5.0_02 to embed a swing GUI into a VB app. When I close the VB app, the window disappears, but the process is still running.
I believe that part of the reason why I've encountered this problem lies in the way the VB app is implemented. The app is a COM out-of-process server brought up from Excel using...
Object m_tool = CreateObject("VBapp.ToolClass").
To bring down the app, m_tool is set to "Nothing". COM then realizes that no one is holding a reference to anything in the server the VB app is running as, and the server is shut down by COM. Unfortunately, a thread still seems to be running, so the process doesn't die.
Doing a System.exit() or some other equivalent would certainly take care of the process, but it doesn't make sense for my addition to the greater application to descide when the application should be killed. I need Java to shut down cleanly.
Here's why I think Java is not shutting down cleanly. Upon inspecting the process, I find one thread that is still running. Here's a trace of the stack for that thread.

Notice that it looks like we have a call from Java to native code going on.
Java_com_sun_deploy_util_UpdateCheck_handleUserResponse
I believe the UpdateCheck class has something to do with checking to see if there is a Java version update to be had, but I don't really know for sure. I've tried turning off the auto-update feature through the Java control panel, but that doesn't solve the problem. Does anyone have any info. that might shed some light on what's going on here?I would definitely have given it longer than a minute.
OS X does quite a few things during a shutdown routine. It clears caches, updates them for the next boot, etc. Sometimes this process can take a bit, especially after software updates or major system changes.
Try shutting down again and see if the problem persists. If the computer doesn't turn off immediately, give it a few minutes before holding down the power button. -
My Mac Book Pro 15", 2.33 GHz, 3 GB memory - runninfg Mac OS X 10.4.11 WILL NOT SHUT DOWN UNLESS FORCED! HELP!!!
When I use the SHUT DOWN command in the Apple Menu - programs close, the screen goes to a blue screen with a revolving time indicator and then remains that way until I FORCE SHUT DOWN by pressing the power button - then after a it makes the sound the screen goes black.
I searched the forums and tried the suggested fixes: trashing these 2 .plist preferences and reboot.
Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
this worked for a couple of cycles then the problem retuned/
Hey, Mac geniuses and wizards - what is going wrong with my macbooHave you ever waited and let it do it's thing? I was ready to force mine to quit the other day after waiting 2-3 minutes, and all of sudden, it shut down. I restarted it and then shut it down again. This time it was normal.
Try this yet before doing an Archive and Install.
1. Boot from your system CD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.
2. Use a utility like Onyx to clean your system cache out, including your kernel cache. The computer will restart slow right after that, but I keep rebooting the computer about 3 times in a row, and I'm back up to speed.

Leopard will not shut down?
Hi,
On installing Leopard I had loads of issues so decided to do a clean install which did resolve all my issues. However, this latterly I noticed Leopard will not shut down, it runs through the process, as in the finder and any open applications disappear, then I just get winding down icon and it never turns off.
Any suggestions?a brody wrote:
It is unlikely any next update will fix this issue, because it is not an update related issue. If it were, no one here would be able to shutdown their machine.
Is this necessarily true? If Leopard shut down is hanging fora several people when Tiger did not then this strikes me as a software problem that will (hopefully) be identified, fixed, and rolled up in a future update.
I will caveat this comment though with the fact I'm new to the world of macs and very new to these forums so I don't necesarily know what I'm talking about(!) so please correct me if I'm wrong to believe this.
Let me throw my experience into the mix :
Having never had any software issues with my Mac's I upgraded to Leopard a few days ago and noticed two things:
1) When booting up it gets to the desktop and displays Macintosh HD quickly but then spins the coloured wheel (what's this called by the way?) for about 15 seconds before displaying the dock and the rest of the desktop. I have a 2.8ghz extreme iMac intel so surely should be much faster.
2) Shut down does not finish. The files/dock and everything go, but the backdrop screen remains with the egg-timer (again what is this called now it's not an egg timer)
Thanks for any tips. -

Phone frequently fails to shut down cleanly
Somewhat regularly when I go to shut off my phone, instead of shutting down after displaying the swirling circle, the passcode screen displays instead. I can enter my passcode, or cancel or do nothing and the phone turns off about 4 seconds later.
The next time I turn the phone on it takes a long time to start up (similar to after doing a reset, but not quite as long). Also the usage minutes show as - until I fully charge the phone again, which is the same thing that happens after doing a reset.
At that point if I turn off my phone it turns off without issue. It seems to be more likely to occur, the longer I've had my phone on without turning it off.
It's obvious that something the phone isn't shutting down cleanly when this happens. Is there some way to diagnose what's going on or figure out why this happens? There is some corrupted code or settings in the phone. Try the following troubleshooting steps as needed:
1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears.
2. Settings > General > Reset > REset All Settings.
3. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup.
4. Restore as a new iPhone. -
Hi, I have a week old Mac Pro 8 core (6 gig of RAM and 3 HD's) that has suddenly developed an aversion to shutting down.
OSX exits and the monitor shuts off but the fans keep on spinning as normal and the power light stays on.
If I select "reboot" the same happens. The machine never reboots it just exists OSX, shuts down the monitor the machine stays powered.
If I then remove the Power OSX complains about an error when it starts up again.
Occasionally it shuts down cleanly, but other times it doesn't.
It's a brand new machine. All that has been install are Final Cut and the usual software updates.
I tried the suggestion on the Apple website of removing all power for a minute to reset the power controller. Makes no difference and I don't appear to have the SMC switch they are talking about.
I'd hoped I was heading away from niggly shutdown and startup problems by moving to a Mac. I'm not impressed so far. Last week it was fine, yesterday and today it hasn't been and nothing has changed.

Weblogic client not shutting down properly in web app
Hi,
We have an application running on Tomcat which uses wlfullclient.jar to connect to EJB's hosted on a Weblogic server. We're seeing errors like the following in the logs when the web application is shutdown, which appear to indicate that the Weblogic client is not cleaning up threads upon application shutdown.
Jul 31, 2013 10:44:10 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader checkThreadLocalMapForLeaks
SEVERE: The web application [/myapp] created a ThreadLocal with key of type [weblogic.kernel.ResettableThreadLocal$1] (value [weblogic.kernel.ResettableThreadLocal$1@39c79485]) and a value of type [weblogic.kernel.ResettableThreadLocal.ThreadStorage] (value [weblogic.kernel.ResettableThreadLocal$ThreadStorage@5de7c565]) but failed to remove it when the web application was stopped. Threads are going to be renewed over time to try and avoid a probable memory leak.
Jul 31, 2013 10:44:10 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader clearReferencesThreads
SEVERE: The web application [/myapp] appears to have started a thread named [ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'default'] but has failed to stop it. This is very likely to create a memory leak.
Is there a recommended way (configuration, API, etc.) of getting the client to clean up after itself?
Thanks.Hi Tim,
where did you deploy your Coherence jars? In the application (APP-INF/lib or WEB-INF/lib) or into the server classpath?
If you deployed it within the application APP-INF/lib, then you should register an application-specific ApplicationLifecycleListener in weblogic-application.xml which invokes CacheFactory.shutdown() in the postStop() method.
If you deployed it within a WEB-INF/lib directory, then you should do similarly from a JSDK ContextListener.
If you deployed it to the server classpath, then it has nothing to do with the application lifecycle, nor should it have, so it is normal if it does not shut down upon application undeployment.
Best regards,
Robert -
MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...
Good Afternoon,
About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.
After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.
Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?
Thanks!I think I found the pattern: Long sessions where Safari remains open. I will tomorrow do the same thing but rathern than unticking the "reopen windows when logging back in" option I will leave it alone if the error does not happens it means that Safari processes somehow not shutting down properly when the system is shutting down without remembering open windows. If the error happens anyway it would still point to safari but to long safari sessions.
Here's my System.log in both instances where failed shutdowns have occured:

WebHTMLView or one of its superclasses may have overridden -layout without calling super. Or, something may have dirtied layout in the middle of updating it. Both are programming errors in Cocoa Autolayout. The former is pretty likely to arise if some pre-Cocoa Autolayout class had a method called layout, but it should be fixed.

Haraprasad...When i am going to login to Toad, it is showing an error like "Toad: Oracle initialization or shut down in progress".The error self describes itself. The database isn't up or is being shut down while you are connecting.
log on to server and execute the below steps:
sqlplus / as sysdba
select open_mode from v$database;
if you see "READ WRITE" you can then log in by whichever way you want.

ThanksCheck cron job and other scheduled jobs on your database server. The database is shutdown gracefully not by accident or crash. Maybe a old backup script? -
Firefox doesn't shut down cleanly. It never has. It often only does a "top kill" which leaves the bottom running. It won't start again until you kill the entire process. I have to open Task Manager, hunt around for the remnant of the application ("firefox.exe"), and kill it.
How can I get FF to shut down cleanly? It strikes me as pure laziness to keep offering this same mickey-mouse solution to a chronic Firefox problem. Java, for example, is an integral part of Firefox and FF should be properly engineered and checked to see it's not choking on Java (or any other process). To say that I can always run FF without Java if my FF isn't working properly is simply laziness. If Task Manager can shut down FF, then FF can implement a similar, efficient shut-down. It's a bad design issue, not an end user issue. And worse, it's a design issue that's been bugging FF users for years because FF support keeps offering this same bogus remedy: "Uninstall all your plugins and try again." It's time to come up with something different.

I have an issue with my laptop, a Lenovo V570 (processor: Intel(R) Core i5-2410M CPU @ 2.3GHz, 6GB RAM, 64 bit) running windows 7 home premium that I need some advice with if possible. When I shut down it does what it should do, ie: log off, turns the screen off, but does not shut down completely as the fan stays on and the power button remains lit until the battery runs flat. I have to push and hold the power button for about 6 seconds to force it to shut down completely. I don't get any error messages on shut down or on start up. These are the things I have tried:
I restored my laptop to an earlier date before the problem started
Took the battery out for an hour or two
Restarted without the battery, just power cable plugged in and shut down
Started in safe mode and tried to shut down but the computer froze (I tried this 3 times)
Tried to do a clean boot with msconfig.exe but when I try and make changes in the system configuration as recommended by the Microsoft instructions my computer freezes and tells me msconfig.exe is not responding (also tried 3 times). All the above have not solved the problem, does anyone have any other suggestions for me?Swahili,
This is a really odd problem. I working on something similar on an X200 with Win 7 except that in my case it will shut down completely and power off, however suspend and hibernation do not work as intended - they blank the screen but the fan and system continue to run. I'm still working on it - I've tried updating all Lenovo and Windows updates, with focus on BIOS and Power manager, reloaded BIOS defaults, etc. I may try swapping in another drive with a clean image to test to try to rule out hardware.
Recommendations for you to try the basics...
1) Try BIOS update, reload system defaults (F9 I believe, save and exit)
2) Uninstall and reinstall energy cut power managment. Reboot after the uninstall. Try to get the newest version from our support site.
Let's go from there...
