Oracle-XE Swap Requirements

Tried to install XE on SUSE but the install process stops with a message stating that my system has 1004MB of swap but Oracle-XE requires 1006MB ( so close but not enough). Is there a way I can get past this issue from the Oracle side or do I have to repartion my box to expand the swap space?
Thanks.

You could always create a temporary swap file and add it to the swap capability of the system.
I encourage you read up on the process before jumping in - things could be slight;y different between my example and your system.
The general steps are (as root):
1) create a file of the appropriate size - for example, the following will create 65,536 blocks each size at 1KB
mkdir /swap2 # just to keep this separate
dd if=/dev/zero of=/swap2/moreswap bs=1024 count=65536
2) turn that file into a swap file
mkswap /swap2/moreswap
3) activate it
/sbin/swapon /swap2/moreswap

  • Oracle XE Listener Requiring Service To Be Set To 'Automatic (Delayed Start

Can anyone offer any insight/explanation as to why the Oracle Listener would require the service to be set to 'Automatic (Delayed Start)' When it is set to just automatic, it does not even try to start. No output to the listener log, and nothing to the event viewer. It is as if it never even tries to start. Once switched to 'Automatic (Delayed Start)' it works as expected. Additionally if you manually start the service due to it not starting automatically, it works fine as well.
    OS: Windows 7 64BIT
Service is being run by the local system account and is set to allow to interact with desktop. -Local system account is part of the administrator group.

OS: Windows 7 64BITFirst point, win7 isn't on the 10g XE "supported OS" list. The installer is nearly as old as Firefox 1.0. Not to say folks haven't been able to get it working, plenty of other threads cover that topic.
Delayed start, auto start ... how critical is that functionality for your install? My suggestion, set it to Manual, and if you need the database, start the listener and then start the database service. If the database isn't needed keep your RAM and system resources available for other stuff.
Sorry can't be more helpful (esp. for win7, don't have it, don't use it, same for vista) but XE is more of a "playground" environment for test drives, kicking the tires, etc., a practice resource intended as an introduction to managing an oracle instance.
And always start the listener service first, that allows the database to register with the listener as it completes its startup processing. If startup goes the other way around, the Apex might not be immediately available, but a sqlplus system connection and `alter system register;` command will fix that.

  • VS, ODT and using "Oracle Project"-template requires Policy Management

    HI,
I installed the ODT 11.1.0.6.20 and tried to create a new project using the "Oracle Project" but received the following error message: "The project <ProjectName> requires Policy Management. Open this project in Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Developer or Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Architect."
I have tried this using VS 2008 Professional and Team Edition. The operating systems is Vista x64 Ultimate.
Oracle documentation doesn't mention any specific VS version so this is perhaps something else. Is there a workaround or fix to get around this?
    TIA,
    Kari

OK, I'll give it a try. This suggestion makes perfect sense. I have used that template to create a project before, but noticed that it doesn't contain a windows form by default and so I assumed that it was a build for a n-tier application database access class, which is not necessarily what I want, and so I abandoned the effort. I know I can add a window form. I appreciate the response and will post back my results.
Is there an example project somewhere that I could download and have a look at?
Thanks again for your reply, even though you didn't reply to me. I think you resolved my problem! :-)

This suggestion assumes you have the Oracle Developer Suite installed on Machine 2 and requires you to distribute your Forms files to Machine 2 or share them on a common network drive. This is not a good solution!
Oracle Forms 10g only supports "Web Deployment" runtime. As InoL indicated, this means you must have an application server (AS) to "serve" the application to a web client. The best AS to use is the Oracle Application Server (OAS) 10g as it provides the easiest integration with Oracle Forms Services (the component that handles the translation of the Forms compiled binary to Java).
@HamidHelal, you must have a dedicated application server running the OAS. Ideally, it is recommended that you have a 3 tiered solution. Tier 1: Database Server, Tier 2: Application Server, Tier 3: Client. Depending on your needs, Tier 1 and 2 can be hosted on the same physical server.
For more information on setting up an OAS with Forms Services, I recommend you review the Forms Services Deployment Guide in the Oracle Forms 10g Documentation section.
    Hope this helps,
    Craig B-)

My server has Oracle version 11.1.0.6.0, but the matrix says it wants 11.1.0.7.
I should get a warning right?
Can I just proceed with the install, over-riding the warning?
    1b)
If so, what is the procedure to install into the existing database?
It wasn't obvious in the (150 page) install docs. The EBS install delivers its own ORACLE_HOME for the database. There isn't an option to install into an existing database as far I know. The installer will ask where to put the new ORACLE_HOME for the EBS database. You might get a warning if you try to install to a pre-existing ORACLE_HOME, and I don't recommend ignoring that warning. The result will either be ugly immediately or, even worse, ugly later when it's harder to figure out why. ;-)
Do an upgrade?Won't really help. The ORACLE_HOME that's bundled with the installer usually comes with additional patches pre-installed, as well as EBS-friendly configuration options. You're much better off taking what it gives you so you can get down to the real fun of learning EBS. :-)
Or, do regular install, but not Express/Rapid Install?I recommend doing a Vision install for learning EBS.
Can I choose not to install the database software?Nope (unless my memory is really that bad), and there's no real benefit to doing so. All you'd save is a couple GB of disk, and as a percentage of the total install footprint of EBS, the database ORACLE_HOME is relatively tiny.

  • Oracle Concepts: Clarity required on Instance Recovery

One of my colleague was discussing instance recovery with me.
We discussed about checkpoint position, instance recovery phases (rolling forward & rolling back ), then he asked me whats the point of rolling forward (applying redo logs) and then rolling back (applying undo blocks), why not applying only committed transactions?
I told him that this happens because:
    1) roll forward to recreate the scenario just before when Instance crashed
    2) roll forward/roll back is the fastest way to recover
I am not sure from where I got this learning, may be some blog or article (probably not from Oracle Docs), but is it correct?
    Regards,
    Ankit Rathi

    OnB wrote:
The 2nd point is completely wrong!Let me elaborate the context of 2nd point, it was mentioned in context of applying only committed transactions during recovery. As all the change vectors go in the redo log files, had there been any mechanism to identify only committed transactions, it would have taken more time (its really hypothetical as there is no mechanism exists, right?) by that mechanism to identify committted transactions (from redo logs) than simply rolling forward and rolling back. There is no context in that point, it's wrong , plain and simple!
There is a mechanism to identify committed transactions and that's called commit . But when you are doing recovery, you are not recovering just the committed transactions but you are recreating the entire scene before the crash which means, you would be required to apply both the uncommitted and committed work/change vectors. Going by your logic, if Oracle would start searching for the committed transactions, it would have many issues. One, time taken would be more higher. Two, there may be an instance that the commit was issued but before the commit complete message could reach the user, instance got terminated so how about those blocks which may be now in data file and have got an active transaction status and are unsure whether they are committed or not. And last, the way LGWR writes is just to keep on pushing change vectors to the redo stream in the order of the SCN. So for doing a recovery, you would need to reapply all of that changed data in that same SCN ordering.
The meaning of instance recovery is that you are not having a physical file crashed or deleted but there was a memory loss and few buffers were left out from being written to the data files and now, data files , control file and log files are not in synch.
The second point, where you are saying its the fastest, is wrong because even for the instance recovery , it can take a very long time and it would depend on how much work was left over before the instance was crashed. Roll Forward is the way to bring the data files in synch with the redo log files and the control files. So if the data files were on Checkpoint Number 100 and the control files and redo log files recorded the number as 120, the missing 20 numbers gap would be reentered in the data files because only then, the database would be opened. Now, your friend's question that why not only committed transaction because you never say a transaction is only done when there is a commit. Whenever any DML is encountered , it's going to cause a transaction. And you do want that missing work to be recreated to ensure that if there was a commit issued before the instance was crashed , next time, Oracle would ensure that work is there and if not , it would be rolled back. And most importantly, in the redo log files all the change vectors go, not just for the committed transactions .This is fine, same understanding here.
Bring in your own thoughts now that how much you understood from this explanation before I start to get into more technical terms.I would like to know your view about the 1st point. Suppose, something went wrong (in terms of transactions) due to which instance crashed, if it rolls forward (as it happens automatically) during next start-up, will it crash again?
It would be rolled back in the case of the instance (next) startup. If all what you are doing is plain DML's they won't crash the instance as long as you haven't encountered any bug in the case of which, next time also the instance may crash.

  • Oracle 12c CPU Requirement

Intend to install Oracle 12 on Linux 64 bit.
What is the recomended number of CPUs?  Generally speaking a higher number is preferred such as quadcore or higher.  But in the cloud enviroment, the more CPUs means the higher the price to pay, sometimes, the difference is quite significant between 1 CPU and 4 CPUs.
For a database (10 GB now, will grow) and moderate traffic, with occasional spike in concurrent access, any suggestion if the CPUs specs?
    Thanks
    Eugene

There is no correlation between your Oracle version and the number of CPU's required. As John said, it comes down to the application. Futhermore, its how the application's SQL statements use CPU when executing in the instance. With only 10GB of data, it may not need many CPU resources. Then again, if the app does lots of sorts and joins on all 10GB of this data, the CPU may be taxed.
It's getting harder and harder to find servers that have less than four cores. Its even harder to find a single-core desktop these days. The number of cores does affect your licensing so try to get the minimum that can serve your needs. Only adequate testing can bear that out.
    Cheers,
    Brian

  • Oracle client memory requirements

    Hi everyone,
I read the Oracle 8.1.? for Linux documentation as saying Oracle products won't install on an Intel computer with less than 128MB RAM. Does anyone know if this is true for installing just the client? (If so, it seems like quite a stiff requirement for an operating system which boasts such efficient memory usage.)
    Thanks in advance,

No, it's nonsense. I've installed the Oracle Server on an Intel compatible with only 96mb memory. It's not fast, but it works.
If you will be using Oracle in a production environment you will need a better configuration, but for testing it's good enough.

Do I need to install oracle client in order to install ODP.NET? Thanks.

The JDBC thin driver does not require the installation of an Oracle client.
I have heard that there will be a streamlined Oracle client installation process in Oracle 10g. I expect that the 10g client and database will be available some time early next year, based on the latest press releases.
