i tried to start the listener and it just failed saying that it shutdown immediately after starting. Was this via Services console? What is the exact error message from the service?

I can log into the XE database via SQLPLUS from dos after defining oracle-sid; i also had to manually set the ORACLE_HOME env variableDo you have more than one sqlplus.exe on this box?
What is the output of following commands
cmd> set
cmd> ipconfig
cmd> hostname
listener.ora (i changed the computer name to the 127.0.0.1)Why the change?
What happens if you use hostname instead?
If you rename the listener.ora (to e.g. listener.ora_xe) and try to start the listener, what do you get?
btw: i deinstalled oracle10g client....other than Toad 9.7 there's no other Oracle-related products on the laptop.Possibly, there's left-overs from uninstall and maybe it could interfere.

  • Data transfer from 08 macbook pro that won't start up to new macbook pro?

i have a 2008 macbook pro which won't start up properly, although, it will will start up with the Ctrl+T command which to my knowledge allows it to become like an external hard drive.
my question is, which cable will i need to transfer data to my newer macbook pro that only has thunderbolt connections, and what are the limitations to the files i can move over? basically i need all my document files, iTunes files, and garage band files...

    1. You need a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
    2. All of your personal files can be moved over.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Acrobat X Pro (standalone) Won't Start

I'm running Win 7 ultimate w/ 8G mem., plenty of disk space, just bought Acrobat X Pro to replace VIII Pro.
I uninstalled VIII, installed X. Seemed to work but when I clicked on the Acrobat X icon nothing happened. I was running Avira anti-virus. It identified hosts.exe as having malware, but I found out from a search that that was a false positive. Turned off the AV, disconnected from the Web, reinstalled, restarted computer. Same no-start problem. Tried several variations of all this, including using a new download, several clean re-installs, and twice choosing "repair installation" instead of new installation. None of which helped.
Used AdbeArCleaner_v2.exe, got "successful" message, rebooted. Acrobat wtill wont start won't start. It asppears to have installed the printer driver OK and if I click on acrodist.exe, I get a flash screen. If I right click on a PDF and then on Open With and choose Adobe Acrobat, nothing happens. Try it with Adobe Reader, the PDF opens.
What do I need to do to get Acrobat working?
    Thanks,

  • My MacBook Pro 13 won't start has white screen and beeps

I used my MacBook pro lastnight and worked fine. Tried to turn it on this morning and it won't start. Does sound like it is going to then before login screen shows ur goes to a solid white screen and beeps every 7 seconds. Need help school is about to start again.

    Check this out.
I think you have bad RAM, so either you've recently put in new RAM, knocked some RAM loose from the socket (really hard to do), or the RAM went bad (maybe).
You might need to see a real tech.
Upon further review, I think your MBP has a serious problem.  You need to take it to an Apple Store for repair.  If you bought it within the last 12 months, you will be able to get warranty service, as long as you're not at fault.

  • Satellite Pro 460 won't start with new hard drive in

I recently got a Satellite Pro 460 but it had no hard drive in.

I thought that it might be to new a hard drive so I took my old working drive out my old Toshiba Satellite and still it won't start.
Any one got any ideas why this is and what can i do about it

It sounds like 80GB is too large for that model, I really doubt the BIOS and Chipset can support more than 8GB HDD. 8GB may not even work.
Here is some information regarding different HDD modes and limitations: http://www.adminxp.com/hardware/index.php?aid=129
504MB - limitation where the system is limited by the compatibility with the values of the BIOS system and the ATA interface by help of using the CHS mode. This limitation is valid for older computers 286/386/486. (1024 cyl 16 heads x 63sectors/track x 512 = 528,482,304bytes - 504 MB). In many cases special programs will help (Disk Ontrack Manager - Seagate, Disk Wizard - WD). Some operating systems can have problems with this software support and can have higher requirements on your knowledge of the OS and used programs.
2GB - Limitation of the maximal value of the FAT16 file system partition for DOS and Windows 9x. Some older computers cannot address more than 4095 cylinders (4,095 x 16 x 63x 512 - 2,113,413,120 bytes)
4GB Limitation of Windows NT - Partition with the FAT16 system cannot be higher than 4GB - Fdisk cannot be used for creating, but the Disk manager is used (Disk management in Windows 2000)
8GB - Limitation of the BIOS system. For the support of larger capacities you need extended functions of the BIOS system. Limitations valid for the x86 computers and some motherboards with Pentium and Pentium II processors. Some other operating systems must know how to use the extended BIOS functions (Extended Interrupt 13). We can use Windows NT 4.0 as an example where you need an updated disk driver or the Service Pack. (OS - DOS 6.xx and lower, Windows 3.x and lower and some other older OS do not have the support of the Ext. Int13).
8 GB - Limitation of the FDISK program in the DOS 6.22 OS.
?? GB - Possible problem with disks larger than 67GB under Windows 9x... See article WD800
    32GB - (65535 x 16 x 63 x 512 - 33,822,351,360 bytes) other limitation of the BIOS system.
68GB - Possible problem with disks larger than 67GB under Windows 9x... See article WD800
137GB - Limit for the ATA specifications (28-bit addressing for particular sectors - 268435455 sectors - 137,438,952,960 bytes)
2,2 TBytes - 32-bit addressing used by new operating systems (in Windows 98 by help of the FAT32 file system).
144 PetaBytes - a limit for new ATA specification using 48-bit addressing, in peparation. Maxtor, Microsoft, VIA, Compaq and other companies under name Big Drives participate the development. The standard should be implemented and authorized by the ANSI NCITS T13 Technical Committee organization (www.t13.org) in the prepared ATA/ATAPI-6 standard (see www.maxtor.com/bigdrive)

  • Wrong JRE Runtime Lib Path on Win2K--Admin Server Won't Start

Running Sun One Web Server 6.0 SP6 on a Windows 2000 server, I inadvertently entered a typo in the iPlanet Administration Server's Global Settings, "Configure JRE/JDK Paths" link.
In the "JRE Runtime Lib Path" field I typed "jjk1.3.1_03" instead of "jdk1.3.1_03". Now the Sun One web server won't start, so I can't go into the Administrative Server to fix the Jre Runtime Lib Path. I havent' been able to find any file where I can change that erroneous setting either. Is it a Registry entry?
I also tried adding the correct JRE Runtime Lib Path at the end of the Windows PATH environment variable on the server, but that didn't help.

Yes we checked the Registry settings and fixed the typo in the path associated with the key NSES_JRE_RUNTIME_LIBPATH. That should have fixed the problem, but the Sun One web server still wouldn't start.
Moved to plan B and removed then reinstalled the Sun One web server. Now it starts and all is well.
Thanks for helping everyone. This also raised the issue for us of whether or not we are entitled to individual support from Sun since we paid for the Sun One web server. According to the web site, the answer is NO - unless we pay $3,000 for a support contract. Other vendors who recommended using Sun One with their products say YES. We're still tracking that down.

  • Satellite Pro 2100 won't start at all - LED start flashing

My SP2100 has started having power problems, and now won't start at all. The AC adapter green LED is on, as are the relevant lights on the laptop body (although the 'battery charging' light always stays orange these days). When I attempt switch on, boot up starts (and has in fact been successful on occasion until this morning), however the battery indicator and the adapter lights start flashing, and everything shuts down again.
On the rare occasions when I get past this stage, the lights keep flashing, and the system soon shuts down again with a 'low battery' screen message. Until this morning, it would sometimes settle down, the computer stayed on, and the lights showed a steady state as normal.
I initially thought that the problem was obviously the battery or the AC adapter, but now I'm beginning to think that it lies with laptop's internal power adapter (although I suspect that the battery is probably shot following all this part charging and discharging).
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I think you are right. Flashing LEDs are a sign that some hardware is faulty.
I can't say what's exactly the problem, this should be checked by a technicain.
On the other side I'm not sure if it is worth to repair such an old machine.
    Bye

  • Final Cut Pro 5 won't start

All of a sudden my FCP v. 5 (not Studio) won't start. I need to get started on a project. I've reinstalled and restarted. I've thrown out the preferences and don't know what else to do. Can someone help? I haven't installed anything new and it worked just fine a few days ago.
    Welcome any suggestions? Thanks, bdkoff

Chis' suggestion is a good one. do try it and report back.
But if you've gone from Panther to Tiger and didn't do a clean install etc... it's time. You don't have to install FCP 4 to update to 5. You can just need to have the serial number for both versions handy... the installer will ask for both numbers. Just install 5...
If the new user account doesn't fix this, It's time to build a startup disk from the ground up I'd think, following the instructions from that article... I know, a pain... it takes me about 6 hours to do this when I rebuild a startup disk. But really it should be done pretty much any time you go from one OS to the next OS... i.e. Panther to Tiger.

  • Macbook Pro 13" won't start

I just tried replacing my HD with an SSD.  The SSD didn't work properly.  I had cloned it, but when I started up the computer it would work for a few minutes then the screen would go blank and it would be unresponsive.  Even when booting while holding the 'option' key I tried running disk utility and it shut down.
So I put the original HD back in and tried to restart the computer so I could use disk utility to reformat the SSD.  Now the computer won't turn on at all.  It whirls, then makes a 'pop' sound and turns off.  Kinda looks like an engine that won't start on a car.  Battery indicator lights work, magsafe connection lights up, and the power light on the front of the computer turns on but then shuts off with the 'pop'.
    Any suggestions?  I'm past AppleCare.

See if you can boot into OS X Recovery.
Hold down the Command + R keys when booting.
